No Rules, No Order
In our school, there are many rules. At first, some students didn’t like them. They thought rules made them unhappy. For example, Tom didn’t want to wear the school uniform every day. Lucy didn’t like to arrive at school before 7:50 a.m. They often broke the rules.
But one week, something different happened. The headmaster said, “Let’s have a week without rules.” All the students were very excited. At the beginning, they felt free. They ate snacks in class, ran in the hallways, and talked loudly during the break.
However, things got bad soon. The classrooms became very dirty because no one cleaned them. Some students fought with each other. It was so noisy everywhere that many students couldn’t study well. After P.E. class, students left their sports shoes and clothes everywhere. And some students even came to school very late. Most students started to feel unhappy.
At the end of the week, all the students said they wanted rules back. They knew well that no rules meant no order. Rules may make us do something we don’t like sometimes, but they help us live and study better.

Chinese people think honesty (诚实) is very important. Many stories throughout history show us the importance of this virtue. Let’s take a look at two of them.
The first story is about Ji Bu, a general (将军) in the Western Han Dynasty. Whenever Ji made a promise, he would do everything he could to keep it. People respected his honesty, and a saying widely spread, “It is better to have a promise from Ji Bu than to get lots of gold (黄金).” Later, the saying turned into an idiom, “A promise is worth (值) lots of gold.” Even today, we still use it to describe an honest person.
The other story is about a businessman named Li Daquan. During the Qing Dynasty, people mainly used gold, silver and copper as money. It was all heavy. Carrying a lot of money was also risky (有风险的) because people could be robbed. One day, a friend suggested that Li set up bank branches (分行) and use drafts (汇票). When people put their money in one branch, they would get a draft. They could then use the draft to get their money back from other branches.
Li liked the idea and acted quickly. Words soon got around. Li’s honesty in running his bank brought him many customers. His bank, called Rishengchang, grew to 35 branches across the country. As China’s first modern bank, it paved (铺设) the way for the banking system in the country.
1.Was Ji Bu a general from Qing Dynasty?
2.What did Li’s honesty in running his bank bring to him?
3.How did the drafts change the way people carried their money?
4.Just as the idiom says, “A promise is worth lots of gold.” What did you do to keep one of your promises? Please give an example. (no more than 25 words)

On a sunny September morning, Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis walked along the railway near their home. The autumn sun made everything look warm and golden. Bobbie was placing small white stones on the ground to spell “HELLO” for the passing train drivers to see—something she often did for fun.
“Look! There’s smoke coming from that old red building!” Phyllis suddenly shouted.
Peter, always the bravest, moved closer carefully and pushed the door open. Inside, they saw something that made their hearts beat fast—a man was sitting on the dirty floor, his left wrist (手腕) locked with a metal chain to a big iron pipe! His face was dirty with black marks like coal dust, and his shirt showed a bleeding cut on his arm.
“Water…please…” the man said weakly. Though he looked poor and tired, Bobbie noticed he spoke like a well-educated man. Quickly, she gave him their water bottle while Phyllis used her hair ribbon to tie around his wounded arm.
“My name…is Jim,” the man said. “They stole my important papers…I need to catch the 11:15 train to London…” Just then, the loud whistle of a coming train made Peter rush to close the door so nobody outside would hear them.
When Mother arrived with the village policeman later that evening, the building was empty. The broken chain lay on the floor like a dead snake, and the only signs left were footprints. But Bobbie noticed something shiny in the dirt, a gold button with a special design.
That night, Bobbie heard the familiar whistle of the 11:15 train passing by. But tonight it sounded different—two short calls instead of one. The train’s yellow lights went through the darkness like fireflies running along the railway.

In May, seven cute puppies started special dog school in Australia. They will live there for 24 months to get some training. After that, they’ll become assistance dogs and help people in need.
An assistance dog can do many things, like turning on lights or emptying washing machines. They can also bark if their human friend falls out of their wheelchair.
They are good “doctors” for people with autism (自闭症), too. Many autistic children have trouble seeing dangers. They may run off at any time, even on busy roads. At these times, an assistance dog will quickly lie down, using its weight to control the child and keep him or her safe.
When an autistic child feels sad, the dog will put its chin on the child’s hand, as if to say, “Come and pat me.” This way, the child can feel much better.
Back in China, assistance dogs are also helping to treat things like depression. “People with mental health problems have trouble talking to others. When they spend time with dogs, they feel better. This makes their treatments easier and better,” Zhang Jun, a doctor at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, told People’s Daily.
1.How long will the seven dogs study at the puppy kindergarten?
2.Why do these puppies get trained?
3.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
4.How does an assistance dog keep an autistic safe?

【答案】1.No, he wasn’t. 2.Many customers. 3.People used drafts to get money back from branches instead of carrying heavy cash. 4.I promised to help a friend study, and I kept it by spending the weekend reviewing with him.

When Maria got home, Mother had a surprise for Maria, too. She had tickets to watch a TV show! Maria hoped she could be on TV.
That night they went to the TV show. The camera never pointed at her. Maria didn’t get to be TV after all.
Then, Maria’s teacher called. Maria would be in a bigger spelling bee with students from many schools! The spelling bee would be at the Convention Center. And it would be on TV!
Maria jumped up and down happily. “H-o-o-r-a-y!” Maria spelled. “Hooray!” She would be on TV after all!

“Tinkle, tinkle,” the little bell rang, and Bobbie went into the dining room.
Mother and Peter and Phyllis were standing in a row, together singing. And there were twelve candles on the table, one for each of Bobbie’s years.
“Three cheers for our Bobbie!” they shout very loudly when Bobbie came in.
“Now, dear,” said Mother, “look at your presents.”
A green and red needle-book from Phyllis, a silver brooch of Mother’s, and a blue glass vase from Mrs. Viney. But the nicest thing was that the big table was almost covered with flowers.
“And now look at the table,” cried Peter.
“We got all the flowers from the station. Peter made it like a map of the railway.” Mum said.
“That’s my present,” said Peter, putting an engine (火车头) full of sweets on the table in front of her.
“Oh, Peter!” cried Bobbie, “not your own little broken engine that you love?”
“Oh, no,” said Peter at once, “not the engine. Only the sweets.”
“You’re a brick (好心人),” cried Bobbie; “it’s a wonderful present.” She said no more aloud.
