One day, her father decided to teach her a lesson. He took her to the kitchen and placed three pots on the stove, each filled with water. He asked Mary to get a potato, an egg, and some tea leaves.
Mary was confused. “What are you going to do?” she asked.
“Just wait and see,” her father replied with a smile. He boiled the water, then put the potato in the first pot, the egg in the second, and the tea leaves in the third.
Feeling even more puzzled, Mary waited impatiently for about 15 minutes. Her father then took out the potato and the egg and poured a cup of tea. He placed them in front of Mary.
“Each faced the same challenge (挑战) — boiling water,” he explained. “But each reacted differently.”
He pointed at the potato. “The potato was hard, but now it’s soft and weak.”
Then, he pointed at the egg. “The egg was fragile, with a thin shell protecting its liquid (液体) inside. Now its inside has become hard.”
Finally, he pointed at the tea. “But the tea leaves changed the water itself, creating something new.”
Her father looked at Mary: “When problems enter your life, when you are in ‘hot’ water, how do you react? Do you become weak like the potato, or hard-hearted like the egg? Or can you be like the tea leaves, using the challenge to make things better?”

C
Every one of us has faced great pressure from time to time. However, I think there are some ways to make full use of great pressure.
First of all, we should have a very strong ability to take on great pressure. If someone is too afraid when facing pressure, he will probably give up before achieving success, or he will choose to do nothing, which may lead to even worse results. Neither of the actions will help you succeed. But the ability to take on great pressure is necessary to deal with pressure.
Secondly, we should pay special attention to our mental condition when we are under great pressure. Research shows that when a person is in a bad mood, he will certainly perform worse than when he is not. We shouldn’t let the pressure influence our mood and make us feel too worried, upset or tired. So, it is of great importance to pay attention to our mental health. We can do this at certain times by checking ourselves as others see us, so that we can detach ourselves from our bad mood. This will make us deal with the pressure better.
Finally, making good use of the proper amount of worry caused by great pressure is also necessary. A proper amount of worry can make us thirstier for success and encourage us to put more effort into achieving better results.
In short, we should treat great pressure seriously instead of allowing it to make us too tired or worried. By doing these things, we can overcome pressure and finally achieve success.
11. How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 2?
A. By listing the disadvantages of facing pressure.
B. By making wrong examples of treating pressure.
C. By describing the ability of taking on great pressure.
D. By showing research about the importance of mental health.
12. What is necessary when people deal with pressure according to the writer?
A. The ability to solve problems.
B. The idea to encourage themselves.
C. The ability to take on great pressure.
D. The idea to help others face pressure.
13. What does the underlined word “detach” probably mean in the text?
A. Choose. B. Hear. C. Separate. D. Prevent.
14. What can we learn about pressure from the text?
A. Most people give up or choose to do nothing under pressure.
B. Great pressure is necessary and helpful for some people.
C. Physical condition should be cared when we are under great pressure.
D. Proper amount of pressure can encourage us to do better.
15. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show when to deal with great pressure.
B. To show how to use great pressure.
C. To show how to avoid great pressure.
D. To show when to take on great pressure.
【答案】11. C 12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了处理压力的方式。
【11题详解】
第二段首句提出观点“we should have a very strong ability to take on great pressure”,随后通过反面论证“If someone is too afraid when facing pressure, he will probably give up before achieving success”来强调这种能力的必要性,整段内容围绕“承受压力的能力”展开描述。
【12题详解】
根据第二段最后一句“But the ability to take on great pressure is necessary to deal with pressure.”可知,作者认为承受巨大压力的能力是必要的。
【13题详解】
根据画线词所在句“We can do this...so that we can detach ourselves from our bad mood.”及上下文可知,为了避免压力影响情绪,我们需要将自己与坏情绪“分离”开来。Separate意为“分离”,符合语境。
【14题详解】
根据第四段“A proper amount of worry can make us thirstier for success and encourage us to put more effort into achieving better results.”

Patience is one of the most important qualities in our lives. It refers to the ability to wait calmly instead of feeling upset or angry when we face difficulties, long waits, or frustrating (令人沮丧的) moments. We need patience almost every day—whether we’re waiting for a late friend or working on a hard school project. ____16____
Patience is important to our personal growth. Learning new skills and achieving important goals both take time. For example, learning to play the piano is a gradual process. If we rush, we might make mistakes and lose hope. ____17____ As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” We must be patient, since success needs enough time and hard work.
Patience is also important in relationships. When we have arguments with friends, being patient allows us to talk things out calmly. ____18____ Instead, a little patience can keep our friendships strong.
____19____ It means working consistently (持续地) towards our goals, even when it’s hard. We need to keep trying without giving up hope. Athletes, for example, train for years before they can win a competition. Their patience brings success.
In today’s fast-paced world, being patient can be a real challenge. ____20____ When we feel impatient, we can tell ourselves that good things are worth waiting for. At first, it may be hard, but over time, it will become a habit that can improve our life.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。

【18题详解】

D

B. The good news is that patience can be practiced.
C. Instead, practicing patiently helps build up our confidence.
