I’m not going to say that storms are good, because I know what they have stolen from people. I hear they have taken homes, cars, boats and lives. But that is not my story. My story is that a storm gave me more than I had thought to ask for.
My mother and I used to be content. She had her dream job as an editor (编辑) for a publishing company. She finally had an office with two large windows. I had my own room with a computer. I had a garden in our backyard. I used to plant flowers and vegetables, and water them there.
The storm happened on a Sunday. We were visiting Grandma and Grandpa in Raleigh, so we missed most of the excitement. The four of us were eating strawberries in their yard. We watched flying gray clouds in the western sky and talked about their beauty. We didn’t know that seventy miles away my garden was destroyed, the great tree in our front yard was broken, and half the house fell down, so did our yard wall.
I found out later that no one had been killed, but many houses were badly broken. It felt strange to return to a house that was half-broken, when the air was now quiet and the sky was clear enough to see stars appearing. Though we hardly knew them then, Rosita’s father and brothers were in our yard, bringing rubbish together and using a chain saw (链锯) to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree. They were covered in sweat and dirt (汗水和泥土).
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to be helping us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr Flores laughed and said, “Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you can’t sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She will help you find out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed (叹气) deeply as she saw our changed home in the dark light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor Mrs Flores to her house...

When we describe our brains, we often compare them to computers or communication networks. But some scientists now tell us a better way to think about it: the brain works like a muscle (肌肉) that gets stronger when you exercise it!
A research shows IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Like building muscles through exercise, you can strengthen your brain by learning. Students with a “growth mindset” (成长性思维) believe intelligence grows with effort. They enjoy challenges because they see mistakes as learning chances and feedback (反馈) as helpful advice, not failures. This mindset helps them keep going, even when learning is hard work.
Teachers can help students build a growth mindset by praising students’ perseverance, not just results. For example, say things like “You kept trying! Great job!” when students try hard. Also, teachers can give challenging tasks and explain: “Hard work strengthens your brain!”
In short, pushing our brains through learning and effort makes them stronger. Like athletes (运动员) building physical strength, we can train our brains to create a smarter future. What do you think of the ideas? Do you think those ideas are reasonable?
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. What do students with a “growth mindset” probably do?
A. Avoid challenges to prevent mistakes.
B. Believe learning makes them smarter.

13. What does the underlined word “perseverance” in Paragraph 3 mean?

C. Good memory. D. Quick thinking.
14. What’s the structure of the text?
A. ①/②/③④ B. ①/②③④ C. ①/②③/④ D. ①②/③④

C. Think feedback is useless for learning.
D. Give up easily when tasks are difficult.
12. How can teachers help students develop a growth mindset?
①By praising only high scores.
②By praising perseverance.
③By giving challenging tasks.
④By comparing students' intelligence levels.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①④ D. ②③
13. What does the underlined word “perseverance” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Natural talent. B. Continuous (持续的) effort.
C. Good memory. D. Quick thinking.
14. What’s the structure of the text?
A. ①/②/③④ B. ①/②③④ C. ①/②③/④ D. ①②/③④
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Computers work better than human brains.
B. Intelligence can grow through learning like muscles.
C. Physical exercise is more important than mental training.
D. Teachers should focus only on students' final achievements.
