The IUCN Red List and Animal Protection
Many animals are in danger today, and the IUCN Red List helps us understand their conservation status. The list was created in 1964 and divides species into nine categories. 16 “Endangered (EN)” means a species faces a very high risk of dying out in the wild, while “Vulnerable (VU)” means it risks dying out but not as seriously.
The red-crowned crane is one of the species we should care about. It is a symbol of luck and loyalty in China, but it is now among the 17 crane species in the world. The biggest threat to them is the loss of habitat. People are building farms and cities, so the wetlands where they live are disappearing.
Xu Xiujuan was a young woman who dedicated her life to protecting these birds. She grew up near a nature reserve and learned to take care of cranes from her father. At 17, she started 18 him with his work. She even hatched her first crane eggs as a teenager. When she was 21, she moved to a new reserve in Yancheng, taking three crane eggs with her. She made sure the eggs were warm and 19 during the long trip.
One day in 1987, two swans went missing. Xiujuan was 20 and searched for them for two days. She swam in the wetlands, hungry and thirsty, but she didn’t stop. Finally, she was too tired to get back to the shore and 21 her life. She was only 23 years old.
Her story inspired many people. Now, China has set up many nature reserves to protect red-crowned cranes. The IUCN Red List helps us know which animals need our help most. For example, tigers and Asian elephants are listed as “Endangered”, while giant pandas are now “Vulnerable” because their population is 22 .
We all have a role to play in protecting animals. We can learn about endangered species, refuse to buy products made from them, and tell others about their problems. Even small actions can make a big 23 . Xu Xiujuan’s 24 shows that one person’s courage can change the world for animals. Let’s work together to make sure no more animals have to face the risk of dying out. It is never too late to 25 .

The Yangtze River plays an important part in everyone’s life.
What is the Yangtze River like to a teenager? We’ve got three special stories right here. Let’s jump in!
Gao Xinyi, 15, Jiangsu
The Yangtze River is a treasure box filled with my sweet childhood memories. They all start with the afternoons I spent at the riverbank with my friends. The setting sun painted the sky orange and red, and the surface of the water took on a warm colour. The gentle wind brushed against my face and swept away my tiredness, bringing me both joy and peace.
Taste is a magical thing. I grew up with the taste of Yangtze River water on my tongue. It has a special taste in every cup of tea and bowl of soup. As a child, I never cared much about it. But when I left home and drank water in other places, the taste changed. I missed the water from the Yangtze River. This is what home really means. It’s not just a place marked on a map. It’s in the water we drink, in the air we breathe and in learning to move with the river’s flow.
Fang Yitong, 13, Hubei
Liu Yu, 16, Hebei
In the summer of 2019, I went to Nanjing for skating training. When I was practicing at a rink(冰场)there, one of the local skaters asked me, “Are you getting used to this ice? It’s made with water from the Yangtze River!” I stopped for a second and replied, “The rink back in Shijiazhuang is the same! Our city has benefited(受益)a lot from the South-to-North Water Diversion(南水北调)Project!”
The ice under my feet felt strangely warm. My jumps and spins were much smoother than before.

Chinese cartoons have won our hearts and minds these years. Let’s have a look at some of them as follows.
Ne Zha II
Ne Zha has long been a popular character in Chinese culture. Ne Zha II is different from the old ones because it provides a fresh understanding of the child and his relationship (关系) with his parents.
In earlier movies, the kid was described as a rude character and he was not willing to listen to his parents and lost control of himself easily. However, the new movie showed us a different character. Ne Zha has been taught with love and freedom by his parents. Finally, the kid discovers the true meaning of his life and bravely faces the challenges in life.
Chang An
Li Bai, one of China’s greatest poets, was full romantic (浪漫的) and free spirit (精神). But Chang An shows us a different Li Bai.
In the movie, Li drinks a lot and likes to have parties. Sometimes he doesn’t keep promises to his friend Gao Shi. He also goes after money. The movie’s co-director said, “Li Bai was not all good...but that is more real.” Li wanted to become an officer, and he tried to get to know the important people in Chang’an. But he did something wrong and had to leave Chang’an.
Li’s life was hard. He never realized his dreams, but his poems stay with us.
Deep Sea
The story shows the deep sea adventure of a young girl who has depression (抑郁症). We are amazed by the beautiful Chinese styles, from paper-cutting to shadow puppetry (皮影戏), as well as Chinese ink wash painting.
The technology in Deep Sea is more fantastic. It’s the first film to fully use “particle Chinese painting (粒子水墨)” technology, creating the beauty of traditional Chinese painting with 3D.This might be a great step for Chinese cartoons.

Have you ever dreamed of traveling in space? For many kids, staring at the stars leads to daydreams about what it would be like to be an astronaut. Just think about how amazing it would be to set foot on the moon or another planet!
Although it sounds like it would be great fun to travel to outer space, it would be a lot of work, too. Traveling to outer space needs lots and lots of preparation.
Once you are in space, nothing can come on board the ship and nothing can go out. You must take all you need into outer space to keep yourself alive. Let’s call these things “inputs”, including food, water and oxygen. Every input creates an output. If you open a box of cookies for breakfast, what will you do with the box when it’s empty? Every piece of rubbish you create in space will remain on the ship with you. Your body will also output food and water. Since nothing can leave the spaceship, you will have to think of another way to deal with these bodily wastes.
Even breathing creates an output carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)! It’s true that plants depend on carbon dioxide in the same way humans depend on oxygen to breathe. However, plants have other input needs. If you take a banana tree with you, you will need to bring enough water to keep it alive. You must also consider another type of output rubbish in the ship after taking the fruit as snacks-the banana peel.
See how carefully you have to plan for a trip to outer space? How can you plan your actions on earth to have the least influence on the environment and your future? Not only do you have to think about all the things you’ll need, you will also have to consider the influence of those things because of the wastes they may create.
37.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.It’s challenging to travel in space. B.It’s boring to live on the moon.
C.It’s relaxing to stare at the stars. D.It’s difficult to be an astronaut.
38.What do we know about the input in space?
A.It will make astronauts sleepy. B.It only means things to eat and drink.
C.It is quite important to astronauts. D.It can help astronauts deal with rubbish.
39.What does the 4th paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The reason why breathing creates an output.
B.A way to plant a banana tree in space successfully.
C.The reason why plants depend on carbon dioxide.
D.A way to deal with carbon dioxide in the spaceship.
40.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.How to prepare for a trip to outer space
B.How to deal with wastes in the spaceship
C.Differences between inputs and outputs
D.Different ways to deal with wastes in space
第二节、阅读填空(共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文意思,选出可以填入空格的选项。
Animals use senses (感官) to find food and stay out of danger. People use them to find out what is happening with their bodies and in the world around them. You probably know about the five basic senses: hearing, seeing, smell, touch and taste. 41 Pain Sense
Pain might be regarded as part of the sense of touch. Actually, it isn’t. People and other animals can feel pain even when nothing is touching them. 42 It can also warn people to stop or change what they are doing before they get hurt.Temperature Sense
People can sense the changes in temperature. In winter, many old people move from the cold place to the warm place. The same thing happens to animals. 43 So they have the habit of winter sleep.Time Sense
Scientists think people have the best sense of time. But probably other animals sense it, too. For example, dogs will wait at the door at a certain time. 44 Using Sounds to “See”
Some animals can “see” the things around them in the dark. 45 By making sounds and listening to echoes (回声), some whales and birds have this unusual sense.
In a word, many other senses are also being studied besides the senses above. As you explore the world, think about the other senses that animals, including you, use every day.
阅读短文,把A~E五个句子填入文中空缺处,使短文内容完整。

We all have a role to play in protecting animals. We can learn about endangered species, refuse to buy products made from them, and tell others about their problems.

It’s made with water from the Yangtze River!” I stopped for a second and replied, “The rink back in Shijiazhuang is the same!
【答案】37.A 38.C 39.D 40.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了太空旅行需要做大量准备工作。

39.第四段原文“Even breathing creates an output carbon dioxide! It’s true that plants depend on carbon dioxide... If you take a banana tree with you... you will also have to consider ... the banana peel.” 本段围绕飞船内如何处理呼吸产生的二氧化碳(通过植物)以及相关的输入输出平衡展开。
40.文章第二段提出“Traveling to outer space needs lots and lots of preparation.”,随后几段详细介绍了需要准备的输入物品、会产生的输出垃圾以及如何规划。最后一段总结“See how carefully you have to plan for a trip to outer space?”。说明全文主要讲述太空旅行需要做的准备。
A.How do they find where things are?
B.Snakes have the ability to “feel” heat.
C.Here are some senses you may not know.
D.It helps people realize that they are hurt.
E.They seem to know their owners will come back home.

【详解】41.第一段前文提到“You probably know about the five basic senses: hearing, seeing, smell, touch and taste.”,后文开始逐一介绍其他不常见的感官,选项C“Here are some senses you may not know.”能够承接上文,起到承上启下的过渡作用,引出下文要介绍的各种不为人知的感官。
42.第二段前文提到“People and other animals can feel pain even when nothing is touching them.”,后文提到“It can also warn people to stop or change what they are doing before they get hurt.”,选项D“It helps people realize that they are hurt.”能够承接上文,说明痛觉的第一个作用——帮助人们意识到自己受伤了,与后文“它还能警告人们……”形成递进关系(also提示前文已说了一个作用)。
43.第三段前文提到“People can sense the changes in temperature.”并举了老人冬天迁移的例子,后文说“So they have the habit of winter sleep.”,选项B“Snakes have the ability to ‘feel’ heat.”能够承接上文,以蛇为例说明动物也能感知温度变化,进而引出后文蛇因感知到寒冷而有冬眠的习惯,逻辑通顺。
44.第四段前文提到“For example, dogs will wait at the door at a certain time.”,选项E“They seem to know their owners will come back home.”能够承接上文,进一步解释狗在固定时间等在门口的原因——它们似乎知道主人会回家,这体现了动物的时间感知能力。
45.第五段前文提到“Some animals can ‘see’ the things around them in the dark.”,后文提到“By making sounds and listening to echoes, some whales and birds have this unusual sense.”,选项A“How do they find where things are?”以问句形式承接上文,提出“它们是如何在黑暗中找到东西的位置的?”这一问题,后文则用回声定位的方式来回答,形成设问—回答的逻辑结构。
