Last summer, I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Rwanda(卢旺达)with my parents. They work for a charity. I was interested in studying medicine in the future, so I decided to help in a hospital there for a month. I wanted to see if being a doctor was right for me.
That month changed my life. Rwanda was very different from the UK. People there had difficult lives, but they were always kind and helped each other. They smiled a lot and shared food. I learned that we sometimes forget how lucky we are.
In the hospital, my job was hard. I cleaned floors and changed beds every day. Sometimes, I talked to the patients and played games with them. I also asked the doctors about their work. They told me, “Our job is tiring. We work long hours and see sad things. But we love it because we can help our community.” Their words made me want to be a doctor even more.
Now, I have a clear dream. When I finish school, I want to join groups like the Red Cross(a group that helps sick people in many countries). I want to spend my life helping people who really need it. I can’t wait to get started!

In some parts of the world, children don’t have enough food to eat or enough money to buy clothes or shoes. Every year at Sunshine Middle School, we do something to raise money for these children. This year we will have a Market Day.
The Market Day will fall on July 8. We are going to make the student center at our school look just like a big shopping center! People can come at any time from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and buy everything from clothes to books, cakes and flowers.
Luckily for us, many volunteers will help prepare for the big event. Last year, Ms. Grant and Ms. Ali made some wonderful cakes for our charity event. They will do it again this year. Bill Thomas will visit Bookworm Bookshop and Mel’s Music Shop and ask them to give us things that we can sell at the event. Philip White will email all the teachers and ask them to come to our event. Alice Brown will put a message online telling the public the event is open to everyone.
However, there is more to do, and we need your help. We want you to give us things that we can sell—books, old clothes, anything that we can sell to raise money for poor children. We also need some student volunteers to sell the things we get on Market Day.
With your help, we will certainly have a successful Market Day!

Have you ever heard of a famous charity called Operation Smile?
We hope we can help you understand how we are trying to help children all over the world.
Operation Smile was started by a doctor and his wife. In 1982, together with some volunteers, they went to Philippines(菲律宾)to help children who had holes in their lips or inside their mouths. Then they decided to start a charity so that they could help these needy children. They called it Operation Smile.
Operation Smile works in more than twenty developing countries and has cured over 10,000 children who have problems with their mouths. Operation Smile has won many prizes for its work and in 1999 they even started a special event called “The World Journey of Hope”. 5,000 children in 18 countries are cured during the event.

The actor Christopher Reeve is best known as the star of four Superman movies. However, something terrible happened to him on May 27, 1995. His head landed first and badly hurt when he was thrown from his horse in an accident.
Reeve’s life totally changed by doctors, but the fighting against his hard life just began. As a man who would never be able to do anything below his neck, breathe without help from a machine, or do any physical activity on his own again, he faced a completely different life.
During the first year, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending his own life. It was only because of the support of his wife, family and friends that he found the hope and courage to live again.
By putting his heart into learning everything he could about his injuries, he also did exercises. Reeve never lost his goal of getting back on his feet, but he made great progress. Shortly after, he tried to return to his acting work by directing, producing, and even starring in films. He also wrote a book about his experience and returned to his charity work. Reeve became an energetic supporter for disabled people and raised money in support of medical research. “What I do is based on powers we all have inside us and you don’t have to be a ‘superman’ to do it.” His story encouraged many people who were stuck in illness. “With the progress of new medical research, I’m confident that people like me would be able to walk again one day. So you can see. I’m too busy with living to think about giving up!”
Reeve’s fighting came to an end on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52. His active performance for the disabled proved more superhuman than anything that could be dreamed up for the big screen.

A. To join a charity group. B. To travel with her parents.
C. To study local medicine skills. D. To discover her career(职业)interest.

A. People lived an easy life. B. People didn’t help each other.
C. Doctors love their jobs. D. They didn’t have hospitals.
6. How did the writer feel about her job in Rwanda’s hospital?
A. Bored and tired. B. Relaxed and easy.
C. Tired and sad. D. Tired but hopeful.
7. What lesson from Rwanda would the writer share?

C. Choose a job you love, and joy will follow. D. It’s never too old to learn.

8. What do we know about the Market Day from Paragraph 2?
