But that's exactly what happened to these cities. Read on to learn about these cities. Bannack, Montana Gold was discovered at the site that became Bannack in 1862. Like many cities built during the gold rush, Bannack is now a ghost town. The location and old buildings have been preserved as a state park for visitors who want to experience a little bit of history. Hashima Island, Japan Hashima Island was formerly one of the most populated cities in the world. The locals made their living at the island's underwater coal mines. When the mines were closed, Hashima Island was abandoned. Today it is nothing but forgotten buildings. Consonno, Italy Consonno was a tiny town with a population of less than 300. The residents made their living harvesting crops. Then Mario Bagno came along and decided to turn the area into the Las Vegas of Italy. He destroyed nearly every building to build his masterpiece. But a 1976 landslide buried the access road and left the project unfinished. Consonno is now abandoned. Eastern Settlement, Greenland Eastern Settlement in Greenland isn't just an abandoned city, it's also a mystery. Once the most populated area in Greenland, the area was abandoned and no one knows why. The last known writings from the area pertained to a wedding in 1408 and offered no clues. 21. Which city's residents depended on coal mines for their livelihood? A. Bannack, Montana. B. Hashima Island, Japan. C. Consonno, Italy. D. Eastern Settlement, Greenland. 22. What finally put an end to Bagno's project? A. A natural disaster. B. Residents’ protests. C. Easy access by road. D. The warning from Las Vegas. 23. What do these cities have in common? A. They were all populous. B. They have all preserved well. C. They have all been abandoned. D. They were all destroyed by disasters. B As a Chinese ink painting artist, I deeply respect tradition while actively exploring new possibilities. My“ink sculpture” concept goes beyond the universal ——— it aims to transform ink art into a multidimensional language that bridges cultures. My artistic journey began with a double foundation. Though formally trained in Chinese ink painting, my early studies in Western sketching and oil painting provided a strong technical foundation. This blend of Eastern and Western influences shaped my unique style, balancing realism and abstraction, and reinforced my belief that “ink painting is not just a medium but a cultural essence”————a philosophy that inspired my “ink sculpture” concept. In my early work, I focused on traditional themes like the “Four Gentlemen”(plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum), which symbolize virtues such as resilience, grace, humility, and integrity in the Chinese literati's culture. These subjects became a bridge between historical tradition and contemporary expression, enabling me to reinterpret classical subjects with a modern sensibility. The “ink sculpture” concept merges Eastern and Western techniques. It combines the “bone method” of Chinese brushwork with Western approaches to the form, light, and shadow. This combination represents a careful balance, preserving cultural identity while engaging in global artistic dialog. By redefining ink's materiality and spatial presence, I expand its expressive potential beyond the flat surface of paper. My practice reimagines ink painting in a modern context, honoring its legacy while pushing boundaries. For example, Longma Jingshen is drawn from Xu Beihong’ s Galloping Horse, yet the horse’ s man e ———— inspired by Bada Shanren’ s minimalist strokes ——— is recreated using 3D printed fragments to achieve a “flying white” effect, a calligraphic technique suggesting motion. The value of these works perhaps needs to be assessed from a broader perspective of art history. It lies in the creative transformation of “breaking apart within tradition and rebirth, through fracturing,” which provides an important model for the contemporary narrative of Eastern aesthetics. 24. What helped the author lay the foundation for his skill? A. Sculpture and calligraphy. B. Digital media and performance art. C. Western sketching and oil painting. D. Traditional ink wash and abstract theory. 25. Why did the author focus on the “Four Gentlemen”? A. To combine ancient culture and modern reinterpretation. B. To attract more Western audiences to Chinese art. C. To demonstrate the diversity of ink painting subjects. D. To explain traditional techniques of ink painting. 26. What can we infer about the author’s “ink sculpture” concept according to paragraphs 4 and 5? A. It prioritizes technical ease over artistic value. B. It abandons traditional ink techniques completely. C. It gains instant recognition from traditionalists. D. It innovates while respecting ink traditions. 27. What can be the best title for the text? A. East-West Magic: The Transformation of Art B. Ink Meets Dimensions: The Rebirth of Tradition C. Traditional Limits: The Fixed Way of Painting D. Broken Elegance: The 3D Language of Ink C Even after eating a large meal, most people can still find room for sweets. Now, research in mice shows that the nerve cells behind feeling full also contribute to strong desire for sugar. In other words, there seems to be a neurological basis for our love of dessert. Previous studies identified that naturally occurring opioids (阿片类物质) in the brain play a crucial role in sugar desire. The main producers of these opioids are nerve cells located in a brain region that adjusts appetite, metabolism and hormones. Known as pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC,前阿片黑素细胞皮质激素) nerve cells, they also control feelings of satiety after eating. To explore whether the cells also drive thirst for sugar, Henning Fenselau at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Germany and his colleagues tracked the opioid signals the POMC cells send in the brain. The researchers monitored the activity of nerve cells in these regions as mice ate their usual food. When the animals seemed to be full, the team gave them a dessert of sugary chow. The results showed that, on average, the activity between the POMC nerve cells and the PVT (丘脑室旁核) roughly multiplied during dessert consumption, and even rose sharply before the mice started eating the sweets, proving this nerve pathway directly fuels sugar desire. When the team blocked signals from POMC nerve cells to the PVT, the mice consumed 40 per cent less dessert. “The cell types, which are extremely well known for making people feel full, also release signals that cause the appetite for sugar, and they do so particularly in the state of being full,” says Fenselau. “This would explain why animals, including humans over-consume sugar when they’ re actually full.” 28. What does the underlined word “satiety” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Sadness B. Fullness. C. Achievement. D. Delight. 29. Which of the following is the finding of the mice experiment? A. The mice had more appetite for sugar than usual food. B. The mice had less dessert consumption in their daily diet. C. The mice had more responses in POMC than in PVT areas. D. The mice had less sugar desire as brain signals were interrupted. 30. What can be inferred from Fenselau's words? A. The feeling of being full generates sugar desire. B. Humans consume more sugar than animals. C. Sugar desire has nothing to do with appetite. D. Nerve cells make it easy for people to feel full. 31. What can we learn from the text? A. Potential risks of sugar over-consumption for mice. B. Differences of animal-human neurological responses. C Explanation of brain mechanism of sugar desire. D. Different views on sugar desire after meals in mice. D Archaeologists working in Egypt's Nile Delta may have discovered a structure dating back around 2,600 years while testing a new technology designed to locate structures buried deep beneath the surface. The team was studying the Buto site, the ruins of an ancient city that was occupied from the Predynastic period to the Early Islamic era. During its long history, Buto was built, destroyed, and rebuilt, and consequently has several layers, each potentially a rich source of archaeological remains. However, the oldest parts of the city are now buried beneath later ruins and thick mud deposits. This would make traditional digging difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, as archaeologists have to move large tons of debris or struggle with groundwater to reach lower levels. The researchers were trialing an integrated approach that uses satellite radar and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). The team started with Sentinel-1 radar satellites to identify large-scale anomalies(异常事物) from space. When it detected something of interest, they followed up with ERT, which sends electrical currents between a series of electrodes placed in the ground to create a 3D model of subsurface structures based on how different materials conduct or resist electricity. This technique has been likened to an underground “CT scan”. The scans showed that while the upper layers contained remains from later historical periods, a large, well-defined structure lay at a depth of between three and six meters, dating back about 2,600years. At this stage, the researchers thought it could be a large tomb or temple. Guided by these results, they carried out a small excavation(挖掘 ), which uncovered mudbrick walls and religious antique where the sensors had predicted. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of combining geophysical measurements and remote sensing data, which can accurately detect buried settlements in a complex region. The researchers now plan to expand these surveys with larger equipment to reach even deeper, older levels and they believe their integrated approach can be used to map other archaeological sites before anyone has to pick up a digging tool. 32. What is the primary purpose of the new technology used in the study? A. To uncover ancient antique without disturbing the site. B. To assist archaeologists in identifying the location. C. To examine the historical layers of the Buto site in detail. D. To replace traditional excavation with advanced imaging tools. 33. Why is traditional digging at Buto considered challenging? A. The site contains remains from multiple historical periods. B. The mudbrick structures are too soft to survive excavation. C. The equipment required is not available for large-scale digging. D. The deeper layers are hidden beneath later deposits and groundwater. 34. What is the role of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the research? A. It generates a 3D image of underground structures. B. It detects large-scale anomalies from satellite images. C. It removes obstacles that block access to deeper layers D. It determines whether a site contains valuable artifacts. 35. What can be inferred about the integrated approach used by the researchers? A. It will completely replace traditional excavation. B. It enables more efficient archaeological exploration. C. It is mainly useful for studying surface-level remains. D. It combines satellite radar with ground-based methods. 第二节(共5 小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The world is a vast and beautiful place, full of natural wonders and man-made marvels. Ever since I could remember, every Saturday afternoon, I would steal up the wooden stairs, watching in awe as he broadcast his beloved show “Melodies of Memory” to our small town. His voice, deep and warm like honey pouring from a jar, would introduce each record with a story that made every song feel like it was written just for us. Last month, when he passed away peacefully in his sleep, the station fell into an unnatural silence that seemed to swallow our whole town. The microphone stood silent, the records gathered dust, and my heart ached with a hollow emptiness. Today, while sorting through his cherished collection in the attic (阁楼) , my fingers came across something unexpected——a small, yellowed note in his familiar handwriting inside his favorite Beethoven record. It simply said, “For my Sarah. Keep the music alive.” Those four words struck something deep within me, awakening a determination I didn't know I possessed. With trembling hands, I unlocked the station door for the first time since his passing. Everything stood exactly as he had left it, the microphone, the turntables (唱机转盘) and the records all waiting patiently. My eyes welled up with tears as I traced my fingers over his worn leather chair, “Could I, just a quiet high school girl with no broadcasting experience, possibly fill the shoes of a legendary host like him?” Taking a deep breath that smelled of memories and possibilities, I settled into his chair. I selected his favorite record—— Beethoven's Symphony No.6, the very one that had held his final message to me. Placing the record carefully on the turntable, I watched it begin to spin as I put on the headphones like what my grandfather once did. With a push of the button, the familiar red “ON AIR” sign flashed on. I knew it was the time. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: I opened my mouth, but no sound came out at first. Paragraph 2: As the final notes of the music faded, I saw many people moving outside. 56. carved 57. An unforgettable experience struck me last month. I got extra change after shopping. Instead of keeping it, I hurried back to return the money, winning praise from the shopkeeper. It is this small event that gives me deep thoughts. Honesty is one of the most valuable virtues, which helps us earn trust and respect silently. Even if being honest may cause slight trouble, it shapes our character and leads us ahead steadily. Hence, we should keep honest in all daily words and actions. Thank you! 或 Dear teachers and classmates, It's my great honor to deliver a speech here. Today, my topic is responsibility. Last month, I was on duty as a group leader to clean the classroom. Unfortunately, I carelessly knocked over a flower pot and broke it accidentally. Realizing my mistake, I didn’ t hide it or make excuses. Instead, I told my teacher the truth and promised to replace it. My teacher spoke highly of my sense of responsibility. As far as I'm concerned, responsibility is the key to our growth. It actually means being brave to face our faults and firmly take on our duties. It is a responsible person who can win trust and build a better self. Only when everyone takes responsibility can we make our world warmer and more harmonious.Thank you! 读后续写 【参考范文】 Paragraph 1: I opened my mouth, but no sound came out at first. My mind went completely blank, the fear of failure flooding over me. Just as panic was about to consume me, the rich, familiar melody of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 filled my ears through the headphones. It was the very sound that had always comforted me in my grandfather's presence. I closed my eyes, pretending he was sitting right across from me, giving me one of his encouraging nods. “Welcome” I began, my voice a fragile whisper that quickly gained strength, “to a new chapter of ‘Melodies of Memory’. Today, we start with a piece that taught me about the quiet strength of nature, and of family.” Paragraph 2: As the final notes of the music faded, I saw something moving outside. To my astonishment, the town was packed with so many people. They were looking up in curiosity, standing still listening. Some had their eyes closed, others were smiling softly, and a few even had their hands over their hearts. Then, one by one, they began to clap. Tears streamed down my face. I hadn’ t just played a record;I had bridged the gap between the past and the present, and in doing so, I had found my own voice. At that moment, I felt a deep connection to him and understood that his greatest legacy was not only about the music, but the courage to share it. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
