Four Unique European Music Traditions Protected by UNESCO
Inuit drum dancing, Greenland
In 2021, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) recognised Greenland’s Inuit drum dancing and singing as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of humanity. The drum dance typical of the tradition can be performed by one dancer alone or accompanied (为……伴奏) by a group of people singing songs about love, humour and hunting.
Uilleann piping, Ireland
Uilleann piping was included in the UNESCO’s list in 2017. It involves playing Irish music on a particular type of bagpipe known as the “ulleann”. It is a highly developed instrument, with some functions that cannot be found elsewhere. It often accompanies music played at weddings and parties, and it’s been passed on through several generations of Irish musicians.
Kaustinen folk music, Finland
In 2019, UNESCO added to its list Finland’s Kaustinen folk music, a tradition where the violin, with or without accompanying instruments, is played by ear. The style is characterised by rhythms (韵律) or accents that make it easy to dance to. The 250-year-old tradition is played during wedding parties, public concerts and at music festivals in the small village of Kaustinen.
Fado, Portugal
Fado music, which originated (起源于) in Portugal in the early 19th century, is now a symbol of Portuguese culture and tradition. It combines poetry and music to create a sometimes sad, and always passionate melody, usually performed by a solo singer accompanied by guitars. It was included in the UNESCO’s list in 2011.
21. What is special about uilleann piping?
A. It is easy to play. B. It is played by ear.
C. It is highly developed. D. It has a strong beat.

When I was a high school student, mathematics looked like a big barrier(障碍) for me and several of my classmates. Mr Iyer, a strict maths teacher, was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his rules. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and finish homework every day.
Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us couldn’t sit still and seemed anxious one day as the mid-term exams neared, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There’s too much to do,” we sighed. “We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.” “Nothing is impossible,” Mr Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here?” We said nothing.
“No, you don’t!” he said, answering his own question. “You have a staircase to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it in two giant leaps(跳跃). You simply take one step at a time. Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself if you keep at it. One step at a time. That’s the secret.” Then he wrote down an old saying on the blackboard—the longest journey starts with a single step. Having heard his staircase analogy, we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light.
Most of my classmates did well in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer’s advice to my own students, they respond positively to the way of relieving the stress of study.
24. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The students’ points of view on Mr Iyer’s character.
B. The reason why maths was hard for the author.
C. The way Mr Iyer taught his students maths.
D. The basic introduction of Mr Iyer.
25. Why did Mr Iyer stop solving a mathematical problem in class?
A. He was tired and wanted to have a rest.
B. Some students made trouble and affected the class.
C. The mathematical problem was too difficult.
D. Some students seemed impatient and upset.
26. What is the secret of reaching one’s goal according to Mr Iyer?
A. There is only one step between success and failure.
B. Take action quickly and make progress little by little.
C. It is important to make good use of opportunities.
D. Ask for help when meeting with barriers.
27. How does the author like Mr Iyer’s advice?
A. It’s strange and impractical.
B. It’s creative and accessible.
C. It’s meaningful and valuable.
D. It’s simple and uninteresting.

Well, to pick up where we left off last time, I’m certain that you know all too well the dangers hiding on the World Wide Web. And whether it’s for schoolwork, entertainment, or just socialising with friends, the Internet will surely be a major part of your child’s life. So, it’s important to make sure they’re safe online.
It’s not the easiest thing, but keeping open lines of communication is primary. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Talk to them about their online presence as early as possible, ideally before they begin to use email, social media, or a smartphone. Discuss what they find interesting online and learn from them about popular websites and apps, which will create understanding and allow you to identify (识别) possible risks.
Next, monitor without spying (暗中监视). Most kids learn to understand boundaries, like respecting others’ personal space, or not opening the cookie box without asking. Internet use is no different. It’s helpful for kids to have ground rules as to which websites they can visit, which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy with anything online, they need to alert an adult immediately.
How you deal with your kids’ Internet usage will depend in large part on their age. There are sites and browsing (浏览) tools meant for younger kids, which aim to provide a safe online experience for children. Older kids may be allowed more freedom since they want to network and need to use the Internet for information-gathering. But you can set boundaries that feel right for you. Just limit access properly.
Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them responsibility, shows that you trust them, and reminds them that rules may be tightened if they break them.
28. What might be talked about last time?
A. The history of the World Wide Web. B. How the Internet influences people.
C. The possible dangers of the Internet. D. What information the Internet offers.
29. What does Paragraph 2 suggest people do?
A. Never be too strict. B. Communicate effectively.
C. Share personal information. D. Identify risks with your children.
30. What does the underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Tell. B. Suggest. C. Look after. D. Worry about.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Is Hidden on the Net?
B. How to Make the Internet More Convenient?
C. Be a Smarter Internet User
D. Keep Your Kids Safe Online

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September, 1666. In four days, it destroyed (摧毁) more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. Over one hundred thousand people became homeless, and a few lost their lives.
The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King’s baker (面包师) in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometre of the city was burning along the Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul’s and the Guildhall among them.
Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. “People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.”
The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.
After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect, wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets were still narrow, but he did build more than fifty churches(教堂), and one of them was new St Paul’s.
The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it, London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.

33. What was the author probably most sorry for?
A. Many people lost their lives.
B. Many famous buildings were destroyed.
C. The birds in the sky were killed by the fire.

A. To suggest Pepys helped put out the fire.
B. To stress Pepys also wrote about the fire.
C. To give readers a clearer picture of the fire.
D. To show that poor people suffered most.
35. How was the fire put out according to the text?
A. Everyone in the neighbourhood came to help.
B. All the wooden houses in the city were destroyed.
C. People managed to get enough water from the river.
D. Houses in the direction of the fire were destroyed.

My daughter and I pushed the overloaded cart in the store. She reached up and took another toy, and without asking, threw it in the cart. “Is that for you?” I asked.
“No, it is for my friend,” she answered. I was proud of her. Being an only child and an only grandchild, she could have been spoiled (宠坏), but instead she was caring and very giving, almost more than necessary.
On the drive home, my daughter was unusually quiet. Finally, she said, “Mommy, if Santa brings all the gifts, why are we buying them?” I quickly tried to think of an answer. Before I could say anything, she shouted, “I know why. We’re Santa’s helpers!” Yes, she took the words right out of my mouth. Yes, that’s exactly what we are.
After a few days, she came home from school quite upset, explaining, “Mommy, there’s a girl in my class who’s very mean (吝啬) to me and my friends. She is Lucy. We talk to her anyway, and when we asked her what she was getting for Christmas, she started crying. She said she wasn’t getting anything because her mother is always sick and her father doesn’t have the money to pay for anything, not even food.”
I calmed her down, knowing what she was thinking about.
One evening before Christmas vacation, my daughter began to wrap (包装) the gifts for her friends. I gave her a roll of wrapping paper, but she came back and asked for more. I thought it was strange, but I was busy then, only telling her to get whatever she needed.
On the last day of school, I had to leave for work extra early, so I asked my friend to pick up my daughter since she had quite a few gifts to take for the class Christmas party. I never actually saw what my daughter took to school.
On Christmas Eve, I went to wrap gifts, but all of them were missing. I looked high and low and couldn’t find them.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。
Finally, I woke my daughter.

第一节(满分15分)
【76题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Starting with Small Actions to Protect the Environment
Yesterday afternoon, our class held a meeting themed “Protecting the Environment, Starting with Small Actions”.
During the meeting, we first watched a video showing the serious pollution problems our planet is facing. Then, we discussed practical ways to help, such as reusing items to reduce waste, saving water and electricity, and using public transportation. Some students also shared their experiences of planting trees and sorting garbage.
This activity made me realise that even small actions can make a big difference. From now on, I will try my best to live an eco-friendly life and encourage others to do the same.
第二节(满分25分)
【77题答案】
【答案】Finally, I woke my daughter. I frantically searched for the missing gifts but was unable to find them anywhere. My daughter looked at me with concern in her eyes. Sensing my distress, she gently took my hand and said, “Mommy, don’t worry. Everything will be okay. Maybe our missing gifts weren't meant for us. Maybe they were meant for someone who needed them more.” Her words struck a chord within me.
Early Christmas morning, a mother and a daughter came to our house. A knock on the door interrupted our thoughts. Standing before me was Lucy and her mother, holding a beautifully wrapped gift. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized that my daughter’s intuition had led her to do something extraordinary. Lucy’s mother explained that my daughter had secretly packed the missing gifts and brought them to school for Lucy. In a selfless act of kindness, she had brightened Lucy’s Christmas and touched the hearts of everyone in her class. Hearing this, my heart swelled with pride as I saw the pure joy on my daughter’s face.
