Miss Bianca Monica, a junior here at Marymount Manhattan College, is currently sifting (筛选) her way through New York City, working towards her dream of making rock music with high quality that you only hear occasionally.
“It was a journey. I wanted to study a communications and learn how things work in the music industry.” explained Monica. This is a young lady who knows what she wants and is putting in the effort to achieve it. Born a Jersey girl, Monica knew she was made to be in New York.
With the overpowering support Monica receives from her hometown, it’s obvious that such a backbone helps her step into the studio. At the young age of 14, Monica led a rock band. After the Robbery, the band saw hug success; they played numerous live performances around the city. Monica has also performed solo at the now-closed Angels and Kings.
When asked about her choice of style, her eyes light up with a great passion.
“When writing my new record, we tried doing the dance route, then I realized: this is not me. Rock is in my blood. I just love music that makes you feel like your whole soul is pouring out of your body.”voiced Monica.
For a 21-year-old, Monica possesses the passion of someone who’s been writing music forever. Her musical style, with a heavy diet of that old rock and roll music, shares some similar features with 90s music.
When the Jersey girl isn’t in her usual studio, you can find Monica hanging around, going to shows and enjoying the beauty of inspiration all around NYC. In late spring, Monica hopes to schedule a variety of shows to promote her new EP. While you still can, you simply cannot miss out on hearing this wonderfully talented rock star.

The future of transportation is heading toward greener alternatives. Transportation is one of the biggest causes of global CO2 emissions (排放). It is responsible for about 20% of total emissions. As cities grow, traffic jams get worse, leading to more fuel being wasted. In fact, over 1.3 billion gallons of fuel are wasted every year because of traffic, which harms the environment even more.
To solve these problems, new, sustainable transportation choices are being developed. Walking and biking are great ways to reduce emissions for short trips. These activities need little maintenance (维修) and don’t create any carbon emissions. They are perfect for traveling short distances. For longer trips, electric vehicles (EVs) like electric cars and buses are a good solution. These vehicles run on electricity stored in batteries. When charged with clean energy, they produce little to no carbon emissions. However, EVs are expensive, and they still contribute to traffic jam, which reduces some of their environmental benefits.
Electric bikes (e-bikes) are another great choice. E-bikes are like regular bikes, but they have an electric motor that helps riders travel longer distances without getting too tired.
E-bikes can go up to 20 mph, so they are perfect for moving around the city quickly and efficiently. Like EVs, e-bikes only need electricity to work, and if the electricity is clean, they produce no emissions. E-bikes come in many types, such as electric mountain bikes for off-road trips, electric road bikes for going to work, folding bikes for easy storage, and cargo bikes for carrying goods. E-bikes not only help the environment but also save space on the road, reducing traffic.
By using e-bikes and other green transportation, we can reduce our carbon footprint and help create a cleaner and healthier world for the future.
28. What problem is caused by increased traffic jams?
A. Decreased fuel wastage.
B. Improved energy efficiency.
C. Reduced number of vehicles on the road.
D. Increased fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
29. Which is a weakness of EVs?
A. They contribute to traffic block.
B. They take up less road space than bicycles.
C. They are always charged with clean energy.
D. They are inexpensive and require minimal repair.
30. Which reflects the author’s attitude to green transportation?
A. Critical and uncertain. B. Supportive and objective.
C. Optimistic and subjective. D. Unconcerned and uninterested.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Traffic Jam Solutions B. The Rise of Electric Cars
C. The Benefits of Walking and Biking D. Pollution-free Transportation of Future

Nothing feels more like summer than a neighborhood barbecue. But the annoyance of summer gatherings remains: the buzzing (嗡嗡声) of mosquitoes around our ears.
“The buzzing in your ears is mostly just a side effect of the mosquito’s wings beating,” said Michael Riehle, a professor at the University of Arizona. "The sound doesn’t have a long range, so you notice it most when they are flying around your ears.”
“From a distance, mosquitoes track carbon dioxide that we give out.” Riehle told Live Science. “They fly back and forth to follow that concentration level back to the source.”
But in fact, that buzzing you hear is likely from a female mosquito. That’s because male and female mosquitoes lead very different lives. The males typically hang out and feed on the sweetest part of flowers; they couldn’t care less about the humans wandering about. The females, however, need to find a blood meal in order to have enough energy to produce eggs.
As she approaches, the female mosquito zeros in on body heat and the carbon dioxide to land on the victim. The female mosquito uses taste sensors on her feet to determine whether the human, or any blood-bearing animal, is adequate to tap for her next meal.
But while we feel mosquitoes buzzing around our ears, Riehle noted that most mosquitoes are not attracted to our heads. Rather, these bloodsuckers may be more likely to seek out our feet, which have bacteria that give off attractive smell to mosquitoes. However, most people probably don’t notice a mosquito buzzing around their ankles, he said.
Another study found that female mosquitoes were more attracted to men who had less diverse bacteria on their skin than to men with more diverse skin bacteria; these bloodsuckers also prefer those who wear dark colors, such as black.
32. How do mosquitoes primarily locate humans from a distance?
A. By detecting body heat radiation
B. By tracking carbon dioxide emissions
C. By following light reflections
D. By sensing vibrations in the air
33. What biological feature helps female mosquitoes assess blood suitability?
A. Taste receptors located on their feet
B. Antennae equipped with thermal sensors
C. Specialized vision for detecting skin tones
D. Wings capable of detecting blood flow
34. Why might mosquitoes be more active around ankles despite buzzing near ears?
A. Ankles produce higher-pitched buzzing sounds
B. Foot bacteria emit chemically attractive odors
C Dark-colored shoes attract their attention
D. Blood vessels are closer to the skin there
35. Which combination of factors makes a person most vulnerable to mosquito bites?
A. High body temperature and floral perfume
B. Frequent movement and sugary diet
C. Monotonic skin bacteria black clothing
D. Alcohol consumption and sweat secretion

One morning in November 2021, Swift opened her front door in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Milo took off running. Milo ran to the house across the street. He seemed unsatisfied with this house, so he ran to the one next door, Swift on his tail. He started scratching on the front door and Swift was thinking, “Why is he literally trying to break into her house?” She was embarrassed. Not everyone wants a strange dog on their property. But as she tried to drag Milo away, she could hear a sound coming through an open upstairs window. It was a voice yelling “Help!”
Hours earlier, around 4 a.m., 85-year-old Sherry Starr had risen from her bed. All of a sudden, standing there between the toilet and the tub, she slipped. 【解析】
【原文】W: Mr. Smith, could you give me some suggestions about raising a family dog?
M: A dog can be a happy addition to a family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, there can be trouble. Families should thoroughly discuss the problems involved before buying a dog. Even if the children are the ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you don’t know much about dogs, it’s a good idea to go to the library. In reading about the different breeds, you should know that a dog described as very alert may be too easily excited, while an ideal hunting dog probably won’t be happy living in a small apartment. One of the most popular dogs these days is the German shepherd, since it provides protection as well as companionship. The family should be warned that these dogs grow to be very big and powerful. When space is limited, a toy is a good choice. These dogs are very small and easy to train. They don’t need to be walked daily, since they can exercise in the space available in the home.

C. Dark-colored shoes attract their attention
D. Blood vessels are closer to the skin there
35. Which combination of factors makes a person most vulnerable to mosquito bites?
A. High body temperature and floral perfume
B. Frequent movement and sugary diet
C. Monotonic skin bacteria black clothing
D. Alcohol consumption and sweat secretion
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. C

As members of our club, we can take action to help solve these problems. Firstly, we can launch awareness campaigns through posters, social media, or class meetings to educate others about the crisis. Furthermore, we can organize a campus cleanup day every month to collect trash and put garbage classification into action.

Milo is a rescue dog, adopted by 20-year-old Makayla Swift. But Milo the beagle is also a rescuer.
She went down-hard-on the tile floor, and got stuck. Starr was scared of dying there. Her best bet, she decided, was to listen for the letter carrier in the afternoon and scream like the devils.

For the next few hours, Starr practiced yelling, “Help! Help! Help!” Her voice was very faint. However, Milo the beagle, apparently heard Starr the instant Swift opened her front door. He rapidly rushed to the opposite house, while Swift was confused and embarrassed. It was a strange sense that hit Swift and reminded her something abnormal had happened. Without thinking twice, Swift called 911.
Not long after the call, rescue workers arrived. They thought they had to remove the toilet to remove Starr, but in their last effort, they gave one pull and fortunately, out she popped. Starr burst into tears, feeling grateful and a sense of relief. Subsequently, Starr was sent to the hospital, where she underwent a general check-up and was diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain. When told it was Milo the beagle who had given her a second life, Starr declared: “That dog was a blessing.”

If you don't know much about dogs is a good idea to go to the library in reading about the different breed, you should know that a dog described as very alert may be too easily excited.
