Darjeeling Himalayan Railway New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, India Built by British rulers, the railway was used to transport tea, rice and other produce up and down the Himalayan foothills. Today, it’s a hit with Indian families on weekend breaks and rail fans keen to watch traffic slowly stop as the train crosses the road, rushing past fruit stalls within arm’s reach. On a clear day, passengers will be treated to views of Mount Kanchenjunga, its snowy peak turning peach in the late-afternoon light. Qinghai-Xizang Railway Xining to Lhasa, China Connecting Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa in Xizang, this 22-hour journey is the highest rail route in the world. Lakes shine like molten metal and yaks (牦牛) eat grass up the slopes before the light chills to a blue glow from the icy sides of the Kunlun Mountains closing in around the carriages. The Skeena Jasper to Prince Rupert, Canada With the ice-glazed tops of the Canadian Rockies sparkling all around it, the train curls out of Alberta past the Rockies’ highest peak-the majestic Mount Robson-followed by the Cariboo Mountains, at the foot of which lie green lakes as still as glass. From a panoramic view, passengers can keep eyes on black and grizzly bears, white-tailed deer, elk and moose, as well as bald eagles diving through the air. Bernina Express Chur, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy Short but very sweet, a journey on the Bernina Express takes four hours to wind its way from the city of Chur in the Swiss Alps down to the Italian city of Tirano. Running on a narrow track that includes 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, the train swings around pine-filled valleys and vertical rock faces. 1. Where should you go for the world’s highest railway? A. India. B. China. C. Canada. D. Italy. 2. Which route can give passengers a nice view of various animals? A. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. B. Qinghai-Xizang Railway. C. The Skeena. D. Bernina Express. 3. What do the four routes have in common? A. They are newly built. B. They cover a long journey. C. They are high-speed railways. D. They go past high mountains. B 2. C 3. 根据Qinghai-Xizang Railway下的“Xining to Lhasa, China(西宁到拉萨,中国)”以及“Connecting Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa in Xizang, this 22-hour journey is the highest rail route in the world.(这条连接青海省西宁和西藏拉萨的铁路全长22小时,是世界上海拔最高的铁路线)”可知,世界上海拔最高的铁路在中国。 根据The Skeena下的“From a panoramic view, passengers can keep eyes on black and grizzly bears, white-tailed deer, elk and moose, as well as bald eagles diving through the air.(从远处看,乘客可以看到黑熊和灰熊、白尾鹿、麋鹿和驼鹿,以及在空中翱翔的秃鹰)”可知,The Skeena路线可以让乘客看到各种各样的动物。 根据Darjeeling Himalayan Railway下的“Built by British rulers, the railway was used to transport tea, rice and other produce up and down the Himalayan foothills.(这条铁路是由英国统治者修建的,用于在喜马拉雅山麓上下运输茶叶、大米和其他农产品)”,Qinghai-Xizang Railway下的“Lakes shine like molten metal and yaks (牦牛) eat grass up the slopes before the light chills to a blue glow from the icy sides of the Kunlun Mountains closing in around the carriages.(湖泊像熔化的金属一样闪闪发光,牦牛在山坡上吃草,然后光线从昆仑山的冰壁上冷却下来,变成了一道蓝色的光芒,围绕着马车)”,The Skeena下的“With the ice-glazed tops of the Canadian Rockies sparkling all around it, the train curls out of Alberta past the Rockies’ highest peak-the majestic Mount Robson-followed by the Cariboo Mountains, at the foot of which lie green lakes as still as glass.(在加拿大落基山脉冰封的山顶闪闪发光的环绕下,火车从艾伯塔省驶出,经过落基山脉的最高峰——雄伟的罗布森山,接着是卡里布山脉,山脚下是平静如镜的绿色湖泊)”以及Bernina Express下的“Short but very sweet, a journey on the Bernina Express takes four hours to wind its way from the city of Chur in the Swiss Alps down to the Italian city of Tirano.(贝尔尼纳快车的旅程虽然短暂,但却非常甜蜜,从瑞士阿尔卑斯山的库尔市到意大利的蒂拉诺市,全程需要4个小时)”可知,这四条路线的共同之处是他们都经过高山。故选D项。 B It only takes one wrong step near a lake in the winter for disaster to happen. Pepper, the dog and his mom found that out the hard way. The two of them were taking a morning walk in Chicago along Lake Michigan when Pepper, a 7-year-old dog, got free of its rope, slipped on some rocks, and fell onto the ice sheets of the lake. As Pepper tried to climb back up to his human owner, the ice around him broke, and he began floating (漂浮) away! Since the water was so cold, Pepper should be saved as soon as possible. As Fire Deputy District Chief Jason Lach said, hypothermia (a serious medical condition caused by very low temperature) can start within several minutes. Thankfully, firefighters were already nearby practicing underwater ice dives. Just 10 minutes later, 40 rescue (救援) workers arrived, along with fire department vehicles and a helicopter. By the time the officials in the helicopter noticed Pepper, he and his ice float were 500 feet out into the lake. Firefighter Chris Iverson dove into the water and swam out to Pepper. Chris calmed the dog down and tied him to a safety sling (吊索). Meanwhile, firefighter Emerson Branch swam out with a rapid deployment craft, which he and Chris used to bring Pepper safely to shore. The rescue only took about 15 minutes. When the firefighters reached dry land with Pepper, they dried him using a towel and played the pass-the-dog to get him back to his human owner. Caretakers at Veterinary Emergency Group Hospital made sure Pepper was OK. But Jason hopes his rescue will be a lesson for others. “The dog was good, warmed up to its owner, and went on its happy way,” Jason said. “But stay off the ice. It’s never safe, …Step into a hole, and you’re out of sight.” 4. What happened to Pepper one morning? A. He lost his owner. B. He was trapped in a lake. C. He got missing suddenly. D. He was covered by ice sheets. 5. What seemed to be the first danger to Pepper? A. The cold water. B. Poor medical conditions. C. Rescue equipment shortage. D. The changeable temperature. 6. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. The rescue lasted about an hour. B. Pepper got to the shore alone. C. The rescue was highly effective. D. Pepper reacted calmly all the time. 7. What is Jason’s suggestion? A. No going near the ice. B. No walking dogs by a hole. C. Taking good care of pets. D. Warming up well before exercise. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第二段“The two of them were taking a morning walk in Chicago along Lake Michigan when Pepper, a 7-year-old dog, got free of its rope, slipped on some rocks, and fell onto the ice sheets of the lake. As Pepper tried to climb back up to his human owner, the ice around him broke, and he began floating (漂浮) away!(他们俩早上在芝加哥沿着密歇根湖散步时,7岁的狗狗Pepper挣脱了绳子,在一些岩石上滑倒,掉进了湖的冰盖上。当Pepper试图爬回它的人类主人身边时,它周围的冰破裂了,它开始飘走!)”可知,Pepper挣脱了绳子,在岩石上滑倒,掉进了密歇根湖的冰层上。因此,他被困在湖里。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Since the water was so cold, Pepper should be saved as soon as possible. As Fire Deputy District Chief Jason Lach said, hypothermia (a serious medical condition caused by very low temperature) can start within several minutes.(因为水太冷了,Pepper应该尽快获救。正如消防副区长杰森·拉赫所说,体温过低(一种由极低温度引起的严重疾病)可以在几分钟内开始)”可知,由于水非常冷,Pepper需要尽快被救出。因此,他面临的第一个危险是冷水。故选A项。 根据第四段“Just 10 minutes later, 40 rescue (救援) workers arrived, along with fire department vehicles and a helicopter. When the firefighters reached dry land with Pepper, they dried him using a towel and played the pass-the-dog to get him back to his human owner.(仅仅10分钟后,40名救援人员赶到,同时赶到的还有消防车和一架直升机。 根据最后一段“Caretakers at Veterinary Emergency Group Hospital made sure Pepper was OK. But Jason hopes his rescue will be a lesson for others. “The dog was good, warmed up to its owner, and went on its happy way,” Jason said. “But stay off the ice. It’s never safe, …Step into a hole, and you’re out of sight.”(兽医急救医院的看护人员确认了Pepper的情况。但Jason希望这次救援能给其他人带来教训。“狗狗状态良好,回到主人身边取暖,然后继续开心地玩耍去了,”Jason说。“但要远离冰面,那从来都不安全……一旦踏入冰洞,你就可能消失不见。”)”可知,Jason强调了冰上的危险性,并建议人们“不要靠近冰,它从来都不安全”。这是他对这次救援事件的教训总结,也是他对公众的安全建议。故选A项。 C Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize. First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking. Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?” A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.” So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language? 8. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Ability. B. Interest. C. Taste. D. Method. 9. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do? A. Learn foreign languages by themselves. B. Spend more money on home schooling. C. Involve kids in foreign language courses. D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge. 10. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism? A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores. C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Learning Betters Human Brain B. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages C. Language Opens a New World to Kids D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language.(多语父母明白学习多种语言的好处)”及Ben Mazor说的话“So why not give them the chance to learn another language?(所以为什么不给他们学习另一种语言的机会呢?)” Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, ‘Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.’(该研究的合著者Thomas Baka博士总结道:‘我们的研究结果表明,双语对对抗与年龄相关的认知衰退具有保护作用’)”可知,苏格兰研究者证明,说双语能减缓精神衰老。 根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.(然而,科学家们继续证实,双语能力,即流利地说两种语言的能力,比许多人意识到的好处更多)”可推知,本文主要讲述研究表明,说双语有很多好处,故“Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages”是最佳标题。故选B项。 D Fresh fruit juice has become increasingly popular in many diets - especially among those consumers who are pressed for time and concerned about their health.Fruit juice has also been linked to beliefs that it can help people lose weight. But is juicing really as healthy as we think? A recent study reveals hard truths about fruit juice. All fruits contain sugars and don’t seem to have harmful effects unless they contribute to excess(过量的)daily calories. This is because the fiber which is found in whole fruit is undamaged, and the sugar is contained within the fruit’s cells. It takes our digestive system a while to break these cells down and for sugar to enter the bloodstream. This is not the case with fruit juice.Different from whole fruit, the natural sugar in fruit juice counts as “free sugars”,just like honey and added sugars. With the fiber removed, fruit juice’s sugar is absorbed more quickly.A sudden rise of blood sugar causes the pancreas(胰腺)to release insulin(胰岛素)to bring it back down to a normal level.Over time, this system can wear out, increasing the risk of developing type-2 diabetes(糖尿病). In 2013,after analysing the health data of 100,000 people collected bet ween 1986 and 2009,researchers found that fruit juice consumption was linked with increased risk of type-2 diabetes. They’ve concluded that even when fruit juice is similar in the nutritional content to whole fruit, fruit juice leads to faster and larger changes in insulin levels since liquids pass through the stomach faster than solids. “Although fruit juice is better than no fruit at all, there are lots of limits,” said Dr.Amy Smith, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia.“It particularly comes with risks when we consume more than I50ml of free sugars per day,or when it puts us over our recommended calorie intake. It provides us with vitamins - but fruit juice is far from a quick fix.” 12. What leads to the increasing fruit juice popularity? A. Experts’ recommendation. B. Its obvious medical effects. C. Its assumed benefits to health. D. People’s improved life quality. 13. Why is whole fruit healthier? A. It provides better nutrition. B. Its fiber slows sugar absorption. C. It protects our digestive system. D. Its fiber helps remove extra sugar. 14. How did researchers draw the conclusion in 2013? A. By observing the blood sugar level. B. By comparing liquid and solid intake. C. By analysing previously collected data. D. By interviewing type-2 diabetes patients. 15. What is Dr. Smith’s attitude to fruit juice? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unclear. C 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第一段第一句话“Fresh fruit juice has become increasingly popular in many diets - especially among those consumers who are pressed for time and concerned about their health. Fruit juice has also been linked to beliefs that it can help people lose weight.(新鲜果汁在许多饮食中越来越受欢迎,尤其是在那些时间紧迫和关心自己健康的消费者中。果汁也与它可以帮助人们减肥的信念有关。)”可知,是因为它被认为对健康有益导致果汁越来越受欢迎。故选C项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“This is because the fiber which is found in whole fruit is undamaged, and the sugar is contained within the fruit’s cells. It takes our digestive system a while to break these cells down and for sugar to enter the bloodstream.(这是因为在整个水果中发现的纤维是完好无损的,而糖包含在水果的细胞中。我们的消化系统需要一段时间来分解这些细胞,让糖进入血液)”可知,水果的纤维可以减缓糖的吸收,所以完整的水果更健康。故选B项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“In 2013,after analysing the health data of 100,000 people collected bet ween 1986 and 2009,researchers found that fruit juice consumption was linked with increased risk of type-2 diabetes.(2013年,研究人员分析了从1986年到2009年收集的10万人的健康数据,发现喝果汁与患2型糖尿病的风险增加有关)”可知,研究人员是通过分析以前收集的数据得出这个结论的。 根据最后一段“'Although fruit juice is better than no fruit at all, there are lots of limits,'said Dr.Amy Smith, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia.'It particularly comes with risks when we consume more than I50ml of free sugars per day,or when it puts us over our recommended calorie intake. It provides us with vitamins - but fruit juice is far from a quick fix'”(弗吉尼亚大学医学教授艾米·史密斯博士说:“虽然果汁总比不吃水果好,但还是有很多限制。当我们每天摄入的游离糖超过I50ml,或者超过推荐的卡路里摄入量时,它就会带来风险。它能给我们提供维生素,但果汁远非速效解决之道。”)”可知,Dr.Smith认为果汁有好处,但是也不能多喝。观点中立客观。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you have a hard time staying on task? Do you constantly leave things on your to-do list till the last minute? If so, you’re likely procrastinating (拖延). ___16___ For whatever reason, there are many ways to break the habit and get back on task. ___17___ Include short-term tasks you need to finish daily and weekly and long-term goals that may take months or years to finish. Seeing everything written down can help you plan out what needs to be done to meet your goals. Tackle things one step at a time, so you don’t get stressed. It can be stressful to think about finishing a whole essay or completing a week’s worth of tasks. Instead of thinking about everything you must do, break it down into small pieces. ___18___ Make a plan in the morning and pick the most challenging task first. You’ll be most energized in the morning once you’ve eaten breakfast and woken up fully. ___19___ You’ll feel better once it’s done, and then you can move on to a few easier tasks for the rest of the day. Keep in mind that this strategy isn’t for everyone, so stick to tackling your most difficult tasks whenever you feel the most motivated. Motivate yourself to finish a task with something you love. Tell yourself that when you complete your to-do list, you’ll get to celebrate with one of your favorite things. ___20___ Try rewarding yourself with a meal at your favorite restaurant, seeing a movie with a friend, or buying yourself something you’ve always wanted. A. Break tasks down into small ones. B. Tackle the hardest thing in your list right then. C. Make a record of all the tasks you need to complete. D. This expectation can be used to push yourself through the pain. E. Procrastination can result from stress, setbacks or perfectionism. F. The more stressed you are, the harder it’ll be to get your work done. G. You’ll be able to get started on the smallest and go forward from there. E 17. C 18. G 19. B 20. 【16题详解】 上文“If so, you’re likely procrastinating (拖延).(如果是这样,你很可能在拖延)”引出拖延这一话题。空后“For whatever reason, there are many ways to break the habit and get back on task.(无论出于什么原因,有很多方法可以改掉这个习惯,回到任务上)”提到拖延的原因。 E“Procrastination can result from stress, setbacks or perfectionism.(拖延可能是由压力、挫折或完美主义导致的)”解释了拖延产生的原因,与后文“For whatever reason”相呼应。故选E。 【17题详解】 下文“Include short-term tasks you need to finish daily and weekly and long-term goals that may take months or years to finish.(包括你每天和每周需要完成的短期任务,以及可能需要数月或数年才能完成的长期目标)”介绍要列出不同类型的任务。 C“Make a record of all the tasks you need to complete.(把你需要完成的所有任务都记录下来)”点明记录任务的主旨,与后文内容相呼应。故选C。 【18题详解】 上文“Instead of thinking about everything you must do, break it down into small pieces.(不要想着你必须做的所有事情,把它分解成小部分)”说明要把任务分解。 G“You’ll be able to get started on the smallest and go forward from there.(你可以从最小的任务开始,然后继续推进)”承接“break it down into small pieces”,说明分解任务后的做法,与前文相呼应。故选G。 【19题详解】 上文“Make a plan in the morning and pick the most challenging task first.(早上制定计划,先挑选最具挑战性的任务)”建议先做最难的任务。空后“You’ll feel better once it’s done, and then you can move on to a few easier tasks for the rest of the day.(一旦完成它,你会感觉更好,然后你可以在一天剩下的时间里继续做一些更容易的任务)”说明先完成难事的好处。 B“Tackle the hardest thing in your list right then.(立刻处理你清单上最难的事情)”中的“the hardest thing”对应前文“the most challenging task”,进一步强调先做难事,与后文内容相呼应。故选B。 【20题详解】 上文“Tell yourself that when you complete your to-do list, you’ll get to celebrate with one of your favorite things.(告诉自己,当你完成待办事项清单时,你可以用你最喜欢的事情之一来庆祝)”说明可以用期待的奖励激励自己。空后“Try rewarding yourself with a meal at your favorite restaurant, seeing a movie with a friend, or buying yourself something you’ve always wanted.(试着用一顿你最爱的餐厅大餐、和朋友看场电影,或是买一件心仪已久的东西来奖励自己)”举例说明奖励方式。 D“This expectation can be used to push yourself through the pain.(这种期待可以用来推动自己克服煎熬)”中的“This expectation”指代前文完成任务后获得奖励的期待,阐述其激励作用,与后文内容相呼应。 My father grew up in Chicago and loved the local team Cubs (小熊球队) his whole life. Read the text and find out what happened to him. Mrs. Peabody, the English teacher, gave the class a writing assignment. “Write something in some way related to summer vacation,” she said. “Be as creative as you can. But,” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.” That night Jim sat at his desk at home and stared at a blank sheet of paper. He didn’t want to write about his summer vacation as usual. What could he write about, except a dog, a water park and two weeks of camp? Boring…He’d actually been happy to get back to school. So, he wrote what he wanted. Not an essay at all but a short story, science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer — it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had vacations. The next morning, he handed in the story, but later that night he lay awake until 3 a.m., thinking, “Why did I do that? Will Mrs. Peabody think I ignored the assignment?” English was his favorite class. Maybe he would beg Mrs. Peabody for a chance to write another one, the sort she wanted. But when he got to class the following day, it turned out that Mrs. Peabody had already read and graded the essays. The teacher said, “I’m going to pass back your summer vacation writing in a minute. I’m afraid I’ve got some rather harsh words to say. Almost everyone in class simply wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation…Almost everyone.” “This is bad,” Jim thought, “I’m getting an F. I know it.” “But,” the teacher continued, “one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin was the only one who got an A on the assignment.” Jim couldn’t believe his ears. When Mrs. Peabody invited Jim to share some thoughts on his writing, other students were all looking at him expectantly. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Some students shook their heads to show disagreement. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 When Mrs. Peabody invited Jim to share some thoughts on his writing, other students were all looking at him expectantly. They all waited for an excellent essay as usual. Hesitantly rising to his feet, Jim felt a little rush of butterflies in his stomach. Seconds after he collected himself, he shared a totally different version of summer vacation full of imagination and amusing thoughts. Upon hearing this, students began nudging each other and whispering, “was it fair that he got an A for an unreal vacation?” Then followed a heated discussion, leaving Jim at a loss. Some students shook their heads to show disagreement. Mrs. Peabody thought it was time to explain Jim’s grade. She signaled Jim to sit down and said in earnest, “Absolutely, it’s understandable that you all felt confused. Because Jim’s assignment was the only one that met my three requirements. It is commitment and imagination that earned him an A.” Gaining a new perspective on assignments, students agreed with Mrs. Peabody, exchanging glances and nodding their heads. After all, no reader could resist a child’s wild flights of fancy. Meanwhile, a big smile widened on Jim’s face. That’s a totally great beginning of a new term. A. B It only takes one wrong step near a lake in the winter for disaster to happen. C Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success D Fresh fruit juice has become increasingly popular in many diets - especially among those consumers who are pressed for time and concerned about their health.Fruit juice has also been linked to beliefs that it can help people lose weight. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
