B Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on news that we had missed during the long winter indoors. However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from local store, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats. Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name. Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one dilemma — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter. When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives. 24. Donna decided to replace the chair and bucket to ______. A. lighten the carrying load B. attract more neighbours C. get better seating for chats D. adapt to warmer weather 25. How did the bench get its various names? A. From seasonal discussions. B. From users’ activities on it. C. From items placed on it. D. From Donna’s creative ideas. 26. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted. B. To show the bench was not serving its purpose. C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter. D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage. 27. What does “The Bench” represent by the story’s end? A. A symbol of community bonds. B. A solution to the aging problem. C. A reminder of human kindness. D. A memory of a valued online order. C Boiling lobsters while they are alive and conscious will be banned in a bid to improve animal welfare in England. Government ministers say that “live boiling is not an acceptable killing method” for crustaceans (甲壳动物) and alternative guidance will soon be published. It forms part of the Government’s long-awaited Animal Welfare Strategy which sets out a raft of policies to improve the lives of pets and animals on farms and in the wild. Boiling lobsters alive is already illegal in Switzerland, Norway and New Zealand, and animal welfare charities say that stunning lobsters with an electric gun or chilling them in cold air or ice before boiling them is more humane. Ben Sturgeon, chief executive of the charity Crustacean Compassion, welcomed the plans, saying, “When live, conscious animals are placed into boiling water, they endure several minutes of excruciating pain, which is torture and completely avoidable. Humane alternatives, like electrical stunning, are readily available.” The announcement was also advocated by former Tory minister Zac Goldsmith. Writing on X, he said, “I’m with labour on this. So unnecessarily brutal and cruel.” Other plans in the strategy include looking into ending the use of electric shock collars for pets, clamping down on dog attacks on farm animals and banning hens being caged. Trail hunting and snares will also be banned under the strategy, as revealed by The Mirror over the weekend. Under plans for pets, ministers will reform dog breeding practices to improve health and welfare, including an end to puppy farming, which sees dogs often overbred and denied proper care. For farm animals, the new strategy includes a vow to move away from confinement systems such as colony cages for laying hens. Ministers also pledged to shift away from pig farrowing crates-metal-barred cages designed to confine mother pigs before and after they give birth. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds said the UK was “a nation of animal lovers” and described the package as “the most ambitious animal welfare strategy in a generation”. 28. What can we know from the first two paragraphs? A. Boiling lobsters alive will be a thing of the past in England. B. Boiling lobsters alive isn’t against the law in Norway. C. There are few alternatives to boiling lobsters alive. D. English government is indifferent to animal-human relationship. 29. Which shares the closest meaning with the underlined word in paragraph 3? A. Slight. B. Intense. C. Mild. D. Bearable. 30. What’s Zac Goldsmith attitude toward the plan? A. Supportive. B. Opposing. C. Neutral. D. Concerned. 31. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. A new law is set to forbid hunting farm animals in the UK. B. England joins several countries in banning boiling lobsters alive. C. Animal welfare charities lead changes in UK animal treatment laws. D. The UK is launching a comprehensive new animal welfare strategy. D Technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive solution to help achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The technology involves arranging heat-absorbing firebricks in an insulated (隔热的) container, where they store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use and maintain it at the high temperatures required for industrial processes. When needed, the heat can be released by passing air through channels in the layers of the bricks, thus allowing steel, glass, and paper factories to run on renewable energy even when wind and sunlight are unavailable. The bricks are made from the same materials as the insulating bricks used thousands of years ago. Today, about 17% of all carbon dioxide emissions worldwide come from burning fossil fuels to produce heat for industrial processes. Generating industrial heat from renewable sources could almost remove these emissions. “By storing energy in the form closest to its end use, you reduce inefficiencies in energy transition,” said the researchers. “It’s said in our field that ‘if you want hot showers, store hot water’; so this study can be summarized as ‘if you need heat for industry, store it in firebricks.’” The researchers examined the impact of using firebricks to store industrial process heat in 149 countries by using computer models to assess costs, land requirements, health impacts, and emissions in two situations for an assumed future where those countries in 2050 are using renewables for all energy purposes. In one situation, firebricks provide 90% of industrial process heat. In the other, there’s zero adoption of firebricks or other heat energy storage for industrial processes. The researchers found firebricks enable a faster and lower-cost transition to renewables. Specifically, the situation with firebricks could cut capital costs by $1.27 trillion across the 149 countries relative to the situation with no firebrick storage, while reducing demand for energy from the electricity supply. “What excites us is that the substantial benefit at low cost from multiple angles, from helping to reduce air pollution related deaths to easing global transition to clean renewables,” researchers commented. 32. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the firebrick? A. Its key composition. B. Its potential limitations. C. Its working principle. D. Its historical background. 33. Which of the following is an advantage of the firebricks? A. It increases the use of fossil fuels. B. It helps to produce industrial heat. C. It contributes to energy sustainability. D. It stores energy in the form of hot water. 34. How did the researchers come to their conclusion in paragraph 4? A. By making a comparison. B. By conducting a field research. C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By building a computer model. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Firebricks Are the Future of Industrial Technology B. The Solar Power Helps Achieve Net Zero Emissions C. Renewable Energy Dominates Industrial Production D. Bronze Age Technology Could Aid Clean Energy Shift Four Ways to Help Your Child Focus Trouble focusing can be a long-term or short-term challenge. 36 It also impacts everyday life. You can’t always change the circumstances that make it hard to focus. But there are ways to help your child cut through distractions and get things done. Jump right into projects. The longer you put off starting a task, the harder it can be to focus on it. That goes for projects for school and around the house. 37 To make it easier to get started, try breaking tasks into smaller pieces. The important thing is not to delay getting started. Limit directions to one or two at a time. When kids struggle with focus, it can be hard for them to listen to, remember, and follow through on directions. 38 Let’s say it’s time for homework. You might tell your child to check the assignment book, get out the right materials, and start working. If that’s too much for your child to focus on and keep in mind, break it down into single steps. 39 While you may want to concentrate on a particular task, sometimes you get stuck and your brain needs something fresh to focus on. Try shifting to other tasks or something kids love to do, which can help their minds stay sharp and productive for a longer period. Be open to what works. 40 On the contrary, others do better with noise. That’s why it’s important to ask kids what works best for them. May be your child wants to listen to music while doing homework. Give it a try and see how it goes. A. Switch tasks. B. Try mindfulness. C. Either way, it makes learning hard. D. Some people need total quiet to focus. E. Don’t just let the words pass over you. F. So try not to overload your child with too many instructions at once. G. That doesn’t mean your child has to do everything at the same time, though. In a world where small gestures can make a big difference, a story from London’s Kings Cross station has showed the power of empathy (同情). She knew Jack would be upset, but she hoped it would help him get back on track with his studies. The next morning, Jack rushed to find his smartphone but couldn’t find it anywhere. He searched his room, the kitchen, and even the living room, but it was gone. He felt depressed and angry. “Where is my smartphone?” he whispered. When he went downstairs for breakfast, his mom gave him a calm smile. “I think you might have misplaced it,” she said. Jack was puzzled but didn’t say anything. Being exposed 72. cheating 73. remarkable 74. Cooperation 75. into 详细解析 A篇 21. D。 Where the Wild Things Are则描述男孩“finds himself on an island”(发现自己在一个岛上)。 22. B。Little House in the Big Woods的描述中明确写道“cherished by readers of all generations”(受到各代读者的珍爱),这表明该书吸引的读者群体年龄跨度广,故选B项。 23. C。 24. C。根据第二段“we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable”可知椅子和桶坐着不舒服,以及后面又提到“it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats”,说明新长椅的目的是让聊天更舒服。故选C项。 25. B。 26. B。根据最后一段“the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes”可知冬天长椅被放进车库,不再是供人聊天、思考的长椅,而是被当成储物架使用。 27. A。 故选A项。 28. A。 故选A项。 29. B。 选项中A(轻微的)、C(温和的)、D(可忍受的)均不能准确表达此意,只有B(强烈的)与之含义最接近。故选B项。 30. A。 故选A项。 31. B。 34. A。 故选A项。 35. D。 C。 Trouble focusing can be a long-term or short-term challenge.(注意力不集中可能是长期或短期的挑战),空后句 It also impacts everyday life.(它也会影响日常生活)。选项 C中的Either way 对应前文的 long-term or short-term,it makes learning hard 和后文 It also impacts everyday life Limit directions to one or two at a time.(一次只给 1-2 个指令),空前句说当孩子注意力不集中时,很难听懂、记住并执行指令。 39. A。 40. D。选项 D Some people need total quiet to focus.(有些人需要完全安静才能集中注意力)和后文 others do better with noise 构成鲜明对比,On the contrary 完美衔接这两种不同的情况,逻辑通顺。 其他选项:anxious(焦虑的)、alarming(令人警觉的)、popular(流行的)均不贴切。 42. B。 spread(传播)、stressed(强调)、finished(结束)不符合时间顺序。 43. B。 cried(哭)、jumped(跳)、flew(飞)与后续丢鞋的情节无关。 44. D。 train(火车)、goal(目标)、place(地方)中,seat最合理。 45. C。 cellphones(手机)、gloves(手套)、belongings(物品)不够具体。 46. A。 broke in(闯入)、pulled over(靠边停)、kicked out(踢出)均不符合。 47. A。 equally(平等地)、normally(正常地)、originally(最初地)不合适。 48. C。 cheered up(振作)、gave up(放弃)、calmed down(冷静)不符合语境。 49. C。 replaced(替换)、found(找到)、threw(扔)不合理。 50. D。 concerning(关于)、noticing(注意)、focusing(集中)逻辑不通。 51. A。 prize(奖品)、opportunity(机会)、contribution(贡献)不符合。 52. C。 expressed(表达)、collected(收集)、compared(比较)不准确。 53. A。 hidden(隐藏的)、fortunate(幸运的)、independent(独立的)不如amazing贴切。 54. B。 attraction(吸引力)、sticker(贴纸)、account(账户)不对。 55. D。 response(反应)、theme(主题)、taste(味道)不符合。 share sth with sb 是固定短语,此处将with sb提到了前面,因此填with。 句子主干是 it features an immersive experience, where the theatre is turned into an inn filled with secret passages,后半句是结果 / 伴随状语;主语 the theatre 和动词 combine(融合)是主动关系,因此用现在分词 combining,表示 “(这种设计)融合了舞台和观众席”。 60. adaptation(s)。 use sth. to do sth. 句中 proving that innovation booms when rooted in heritage, ____ that traditions... 66. association 67. attached 68. expected 69. be held 70. caught 71. But your smartphone is holding you back. Take a break today. Read a book, talk to a friend, or just look at the sky. Your life is more colorful than the screen.” After reading the card, Jack was overwhelmed with a sense of regret and guilt. Not only did he try to listen attentively in class, taking detailed notes but also talked and played with his classmates during breaks. When he got home, without his phone to distract him, he focused entirely on his studies instead of wandering online. He reviewed lessons patiently and finished his tasks efficiently. That day, he found the long-lost pleasure of study and truly realized his mom’s deep love. From then on, he learned how to use his phone wisely, keeping pace with both academic study and online updates. Text 1 W: What should we have for dinner tonight? We had Chinese dishes last week, and I don’t really feel like Indian ones. That sounds absolutely amazing. But isn’t it expensive? W: It is, but as with anything, you get what you pay for. I do think it’s worth the investment if you’re into virtual reality experiences. M: I’m curious to know how it works. W: Well, it uses sensors to track your movements and translate them into the virtual world. Plus, the displays provide a very clear view. M: I’ve just got to try it. Text 9(第17题为推断题) W: Hey, I’m thinking about learning English. It’s such a useful language and it can open up a lot of career opportunities. Do you have any tips on the ways to go about it? (14) M: Absolutely. Learning a new language can be exciting. I’d suggest starting with a structured course, either in person or online. (15) That way, you get a solid foundation in grammar and vocabulary. W: That makes sense. What about practice? How do I actually use the language to improve my skills? M: Take every opportunity to use it. Try watching movies or reading books in English. If possible, find a language exchange partner or join language learning communities to practice speaking. W: That sounds like a good idea. But isn’t memory a big part of it? M: Yes, it is. Repetition apps and regular practice will all help you remember the language. Also, try to start thinking in English, even if it’s just basic thoughts. W: And what about pronunciation? M: Practicing with native speakers or using language learning apps with pronunciation guides can help. Recording your speaking and comparing it to native speakers’ is another useful way to learn. (16) W: Thanks for the advice. I’m eager to get started. M: Communicating in English can be great fun and learning a new language is a great way to improve your mind.
