The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most popular contests (竞赛) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占据优势) by Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row. The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who take part in competitive eating. Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed. The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating. Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at present. 8. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest _____. A. has a history of over 200 years B. takes place once a year in Japan C. is becoming less popular than before D. has made Takeru Kobayashi famous 9. What do we know about eating contests? A. Fast food is the only type of food. B. They usually last ten minutes or so. C. Only men are allowed to enter a contest. D. They are open to competitors of all ages. 10. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. How to win an eating contest. B. The history of competitive eating. C. Safety guidelines from the IFOCE. D. The disadvantages of eating too much. 11. What’s the main purpose of the text? A. To report. B. To advertise. C. To introduce. D. To warn. D 9. B 10. A 11. 由第一段中的“The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001 ... has won the contest six years in a row”可知,Takeru Kobayashi在美国纽约的内森国际吃热狗大赛上连夺六届冠军,这使得他名声远扬。 由第二段中的“The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes”可知,竞吃比赛通常持续十分钟左右。 由第三段“The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed.” D WeChat is one of the well-established digital (数字的) platforms (平台) in China. I was just 15 then and Jack 5. We loved going to the beach but normally always went with mom or dad. On our way back, we decided to walk along the beach instead of taking the taxi back home. We did not tell our aunt about all this, as she might refuse. So off we ran to the beach, where we played happily on the sand, making little sand castles and collecting sea shells. We wrote our names on the sand only to be erased by the coming waves. We splashed (泼) water on each other’s faces, running and laughing. We had so much fun. Time passes so quickly when one is happy. Our games continued. The tide (潮水) was coming in but we were just unaware of anything. It was beginning to get dark and we decided to move on. At one point we were shocked to see that we could not go any further as the waters had covered the place ahead. With fear we turned back. But to our surprise, the waters behind us had also touched the shore. Now we were left on a small dry patch (片) of land surrounded by water on all sides. We could not move forward, nor go back. Our only hope was a tall wall with huge rocks nearby. Climbing over it, we could get onto the road and take a taxi home. Despite the fear, we didn’t give up, though. I decided to get Jack across the wall first. I picked him up and tried my best to get him across the wall, but we slipped (打滑) and fell from the rock into the water. He cried in pain and fear. I realized that on our own, we could never cross that big wall. Now only help from outside could save us. The ever rising water was making us frightened more and more. In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle (奇迹) happened. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle happened. Two kind men who were passing by heard our cries. They quickly came to our rescue, assessing the situation with calmness. One of them, a tall man with a reassuring voice, said, “Don’t worry, boys. We’ll get you out of here safely.” They found a long branch nearby and used it as a bridge to reach us. The other man, who had a strong build, carefully lifted Jack first and then helped me climb over the wall. Their determination and bravery gave us hope when we thought all was lost. After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home. To our surprise, we found that our aunt was actually in our house, waiting anxiously. When she saw us safe, she hugged us tightly, tears of relief in her eyes. We told her what had happened and how those two strangers had saved us. She scolded us gently for not telling her our plan but also praised the men’s kindness. It was a lesson I would never forget — the power of kindness and the importance of staying calm in danger. 词汇激活 行为类 ①救援:come to one’s rescue/come to save someone ②评估情况:assess the situation/evaluate the condition ③举起:lift/raise 情绪类 ①焦虑地:anxiously/worriedly ②宽慰的泪水:tears of relief/tears of comfort 【点睛】【高分句型1】Two kind men who were passing by heard our cries. C Competitive eating has become big business. With friends, I went to the cinema, a place ___37___ the atmosphere felt like home. The audience was mostly Chinese, ___38___(chat) excitedly in our native language about the film’s cultural significance. This sense of familiarity, however, was mixed with a touch of sadness. The screening was in a small Chapel Hill theater, one of the few showing Ne Zha 2 among countless Hollywood blockbusters like Captain America 4 and Wicked. While those films had multiple daily showings and large-size posters, Ne Zha 2 ___39___ (limit) to just two or three screenings a week, with no promotional presence. Ne Zha 2 is more than a visually ___40___(attract) film; it explores topics of destiny, rebellion, and self-acceptance, which resonate deeply with Chinese audiences, especially those abroad. For international students like me, the story mirrors the challenges we meet when adapting ___41___ life in a new culture and redefining our identities. Despite its cultural ___42___ (rich), Ne Zha 2 struggles to gain popularity outside China. Even as it stands as one of China’s highest-earning films, its international revenue (票房) pales when ___43___(place) beside the success of American movies in China. This imbalance highlights a one-sided cultural exchange. Watching Ne Zha 2 in the US was more than entertainment; it was a moment of cultural connection. It reminded me of the possibility for films ___44___ (bridge) gaps and promote understanding. To achieve this, we must move beyond one-sided narratives (叙述)____45____ create opportunities for diverse stories to be shared and valued globally. The Spring Festival, The Mid-Autumn Festival, The Lantern Festival, The Dragon Boat Festival) Dear fellow students, I’m Li Hua from China. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 47. My brother Jack and I went to visit my Aunt, who lived very near the beach. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
