A Bike with Square Wheels
Sergii Gordieiev, an engineer (工程师) , has put his skills to the test by creating a bicycle with square wheels. The bike works like a tank (坦克) but is powered by its pedals. Rather than going round, the square wheels stay still. But the tyres around them slide along the ground like the caterpillar moves on a tank. This might make the bike slow to ride. Sergii also has a popular YouTube channel where he posts his other inventions.
“Prison” Break
A team of scientists has created a tiny robot that can melt itself down and then rebuild itself back into its former shape, allowing it to do jobs in small spaces or even escape from prison. While such a robot sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, the team actually found their inspiration in the sea cucumber. They recently tested out the robot’s special abilities and published the results in Matter.

Temperatures are rising. Over-high temperature makes people impatient, uneasy or angry. And in serious cases, it can lead to heat illness. Whether you’re in the middle of a heat wave or just trying to get through one hot day, you’ll need strategies to cool off and stay well. One of the most important things is staying hydrated
Units of Weight
kilogram (1 kilogram ≈ 2.2 pounds)
pound (1 pound = 16 ounces)
One way to plan how much water you need is to take your weight in pounds, divide that number in half, and drink that many ounces every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need to drink 75 ounces of water. That’s according to Dr. Dana Cohen.
Seems simple, right? Not so much. Some people need more water than others. And sometimes, a glass of water isn’t even the best. The following suggestions from experts can help make sure you’re properly hydrated.
Think not just about water. Water is the best thing you can drink when it’s hot outside. But other drinks can also do an excellent job of keeping you hydrated.
Water-rich fruits
watermelons, strawberries, cantaloupes, oranges
Water-rich vegetables
cucumber, celery, peppers, cabbage
Eat water-rich foods. Eating foods that are rich in water is a great way to stay hydrated in the heat, Dr. Ashley Karpinos says.
Drink water before you feel thirsty. One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until they feel thirsty before they drink water, Karpinos says. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already on the way to dehydration (脱水).
30.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指的是)?
A.Water. B.Not having strategies.
C.Over-high temperature. D.Heat illness.
31.If Lisa weighs 50 kilograms, how much water should she drink every day according to Dr. Dana Cohen?
A.25 ounces. B.55 ounces.
C.110 ounces. D.100 ounces.
32.What does Karpinos most probably agree with?
A.Drinking only when thirsty is wrong.
B.Water is the best choice on a hot day.
C.How much water we need can change.
D.Fruits have no water at all.
33.What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.

When it comes to teaching and learning, pictures play an important role in making things simple. Thinking maps have been proved to be a useful tool for students and teachers at all grades.
Thinking maps make meaningful learning possible as they help organize ideas and information in a way that is easy to understand. They can be very useful during creative thinking exercises. Here are four types of thinking maps and ways to use them.
The bubble map is used to describe a subject using adjectives. Bubble maps can be very useful when analyzing (分析) a character from a novel or story, introducing new lessons to the class, etc.
The brace map is used to show the units of an object or event. For example, the parts of a car. It shouldn’t be used for something abstract (抽象的) like an idea, which cannot be easily separated.
The circle map is a tool that is used to describe something or express understanding of a topic. It’s a great tool for both personal and group brainstorming activities. People can write down a topic in the central circle. Around the topic are facts or ideas. Inside the square are ways to collect more information.
The flow map represents the flow of something. It can be used to organize information in a proper order, list steps of an event and find patterns (模式). The flow map includes a series of boxes which are connected by arrows (箭头). Pictures can also be used instead of boxes to show the order.
34.From the passage, thinking maps are used to ___________.
A.organize ideas B.find directions C.practice drawing D.learn shapes
35.The bubble map can help learners ___________.
A.show the space order of places B.know the time order of stories
C.collect background information D.analyze the qualities of characters
36.To write about the experiences of a trip to Beijing, which is the most helpful?

You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often related to weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.
But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.
Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff.
In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially (潜在地) dangerous people, places, and activities.
Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride.
Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.
Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals (化学物质), especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.
In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.
“Watch people walking out of a haunted house (鬼屋), and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.
People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. Some studies show that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.
“You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you're better able to work through it during stressful situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to love your fear. It may make us stronger.
37.Why is a scary roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the article?
A.It improves people’s ability to survive in the modern world.
B.It makes people less cowardly and more confident in life.
C.It causes the brain to produce chemicals that make people happy and excited.
D.It teaches people how to keep away from things that could be dangerous.
38.The underlined phrase “bond with” in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ___________.
A.get closer to B.fight against C.pay attention to D.be more careful with
39.What is the right attitude toward fear according to the article?
A.Avoid being involved in scary situations. B.Experience it as often as possible.
C.Consider it as a sign of weakness. D.Enjoy healthy fear from time to time.
40.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.People’s misunderstandings about fear.
B.Different ways to deal with fear.
C.The advantages that fear brings us.
D.The importance of avoiding fear in daily life.

so表结果;but表转折;and表并列。
固定搭配decide to do sth,意思是“决定做某事”,因此用不定式to help。
It’s+adj.+of sb to do sth,当形容词是对行为发出者的评价(wrong“错误的”,是对伤人者行为的评价)时,用介词of。for常用于描述事物性质;with/to搭配不当。
It’s+adj.+for sb to do sth,当形容词描述事情的性质(important“重要的”,描述“保护动物”这件事)时,用介词for。of用于描述人;on/about搭配不当。
固定搭配promise to do sth,意思是“承诺做某事”,因此用不定式to come。
It’s never too late to do sth,意思是“做某事永远不嫌晚”,因此用不定式to show。

A Bike with Square Wheels
Sergii Gordieiev, an engineer (工程师) , has put his skills to the test by creating a bicycle with square wheels. The bike works like a tank (坦克) but is powered by its pedals. Rather than going round, the square wheels stay still. But the tyres around them slide along the ground like the caterpillar moves on a tank. This might make the bike slow to ride.
A. B. C. D.
【答案】30.C 31.B 32.A 33.C
第一段指出“Over-high temperature makes people impatient, uneasy or angry. And in serious cases, it can lead to heat illness”,根据“in serious cases”前文提到的“Over-high temperature”可知,“it”指代“高温”。
32.倒数第一段指出“Drink water before you feel thirsty”,并且“One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until they feel thirsty”,因此Karpinos认为感到口渴才喝水是错误的做法。
C
34.From the passage, thinking maps are used to ________.
A.organize ideas B.find directions C.practice drawing D.learn shapes
35.The bubble map can help learners ________.
A.show the space order of places B.know the time order of stories

34.根据原文第二段“Thinking maps make meaningful learning possible as they help organize ideas and information in a way that is easy to understand.”,可知思维导图的作用是帮助组织想法和信息。
35.根据气泡图的介绍“Bubble maps can be very useful when analyzing a character from a novel or story”,可知气泡图可用于分析角色的品质。
36.根据流程图的介绍“The flow map represents the flow of something. It can be used to organize information in a proper order, list steps of an event…”,可知流程图适合记录事件的步骤和顺序,而写北京游记需要按顺序记录行程活动,因此选项C的流程图最符合。

38.The underlined phrase “bond with” in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ________.
【答案】37.C 38.A 39.D 40.C
根据文章第5段提到“scary roller coaster ride”,紧接着第7段引用Margee Kerr的解释:“Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals... create feelings of happiness and excite us”可知可怕的过山车能让大脑产生使人快乐和兴奋的化学物质,这是其对人有帮助的原因。
因此,文章的主要内容是关于恐惧带来的优势“The advantages that fear brings us”。
