In the fall of 1985. I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic---and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 81. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember;little steps add up to big dreams.

Essentially, everyone has two ages: a chronological(按时间计算的)age, how old the calendar says you are, and a biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.
“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number,” said Professor David Sinclair at Harvard University. “It is biological age that determines our health and ultimately our lifespan. We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. Biological age is the number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.”
To calculate biological age, Professor Levine at Yale University identified nine biomarker(生物标志)that seemed to be the most influential on lifespan by a simple blood test. The numbers of those markers, such as blood sugar and immune(免疫的)measures, can be put into the computer, and the algorithm(算式,算法)does the rest.
Perhaps what’s most important here is that these measures can be changed. Doctors can take this information and help patients make changes to lifestyle, and hopefully take steps to improve their biological conditions. “I think the most exciting thing about this research is that these things aren’t set in stone,” Levine said. “People can be given the information earlier and take steps to improve their health before it’s too late.”
Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results. “I always considered myself a very healthy person. I’m physically active; I eat what I consider a fairly healthy diet. But I did not find my results to be as good as I had hoped they would be. It was a wake-up call,” she said.
Levine is working with a group to provide access to the algorithm online so that anyone can calculate their biological age, identify potential risks and take steps to improve their own health in the long run. “No one wants to live an extremely long life with a lot of chronic(慢性的)diseases,” Levine said. “By delaying the development of mental and physical functioning problems, people can still be engaged in society in their senior years. That is the ideal we should be pursuing.”
46. Biological age depends on .
A. whether we can adapt ourselves to the environment
B. how well our body works compared with our peers’
C. when we start to take outdoor exercise
D. what the calendar says about our age
47. By saying “we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one” in Para. 2, the author means _______.
A. we don’t have to celebrate our birthday every year
B. we are chronologically older than last year
C. we might be less happy than the previous year
D. we may be biologically younger than the year before
48. According to Prof. Levine, what is the most exciting thing about her research?
A. The measures are not fixed.
B. Health services can be set up.
C. The problems are not that serious.
D. The research results are written in stone.
49. What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Para. 5?
A. It is necessary to change our diet regularly.
B. The test results may give us wrong information.
C. Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.
D. The algorithm can reveal our potential health problems.
50. The ultimate goal of Levine’s research is to .
A. free people from chronic diseases
B. work out a solution to genetic problems
C. keep people socially active even in old age
D. provide people with access to scientific theory
D
Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online, whether reading news, social media, or e-books. While online reading opens up a lot of knowledge to people, there are some disadvantages, too. These include tiredness of eyes, headaches, as well as difficulty in even finishing reading the text. Now a new pioneering (开创性的) reading plugin (插件) has been intended to help people overcome these problems and read faster online.
The reading plugin called Bionic Reading, which was developed by Swiss designer Renato Casutt, was created with the belief that your brain can read faster than your eyes. The plugin makes the first few letters of each word in bold (粗体) which actually allows your eyes to jump over parts of the text and your brain to fill in what is missing. Incredibly, reading like this feels like finally unlocking 100 percent of people’s brain.
Casutt came up with the plugin by accident. He was reading a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it faster and well master it if he separated it into parts. He has worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to perfect it. Maybe people who want to strengthen their reading ability show interest in it, but more research is needed before it can be finally shown that the system improves reading ability. But people with dyslexia (阅读障碍) have proved that Bionic Reading did help them focus on what they are reading.
Casutt’s goal is to combine the plugin with all reading apps and online services. “In a digital world controlled by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content,” he said. Bionic Reading is available in several apps like Fiery Feeds, Lie, and Next App. The best way to know if it helps you read better online is to try it yourself and find out what it is all about.
51. Bionic Reading was designed based on the idea that __________.
A. your eyes can read faster than your brain.
B. your brain can read faster than your eyes.
C. reading can unlock people’s brain.
D. the first few letters of each word can be made in bold.
52. How does Bionic Reading work?
A. Users can read faster with less thinking.
B. Users keep their brains much less active.
C. Users keep an eye on part of the whole text.
D. Users guess the meanings of some key words.
53. What benefit does Bionic Reading bring to people with dyslexia?
A. Selecting suitable reading contents.
B. Keeping up with reading contents.
C. Limiting reading time.
D. Reducing stress from reading.
54. What can we learn about Bionic Reading?
A. It has not been put into use so far.
B. It has already been fully developed.
C. It leaves users a further reading and thinking.
D. It helps users skip the new words in reading.
55. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. New Pioneering Plugin Improves Online Reading.
B. Online Reading Is Sure To Perfect People’s Brain.
C. Spending Time On Online Reading Is Worthwhile.
D. New Pioneering Plugin Still Needs To Be Improved.
II卷(非选择题,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
It was 3 a.m. A sudden sound of something heavy falling and glass breaking made Malti wake up. When she opened the living room door, she stood there in shock. A large piece of the ceiling (天花板) had fallen, breaking the glass coffee table. Living alone in this house, the seventy-year-old lady sighed, deciding to clean up in the morning. Living in this old building safely felt like a miracle. Maybe it was time to find a new home, she thought.
The next morning, as Malti began cleaning the mess, she noticed three well-dressed strangers standing outside her door. A middle-aged man among them greeted her warmly like an old friend: “Hello, Malti. I’m Rathod.” Though puzzled, she invited them in.
Then Rathod told her a story. Thirty years ago, the couple’s newborn baby had a serious blood problem and needed an urgent transfusion (紧急输血). Their search had led them to Malti, whose rare blood type matched the baby’s. Rathod had rushed to her office. Without hesitation, she had left her work and followed the man to the hospital to donate blood. That act had saved the child, who was now in front of Malti and had become a doctor working in the United States.
Malti widened her eyes, and she remembered now. The worried father arriving at her office, the anxious trip to the hospital, and the weak child fighting for life… Rathod then explained that the whole family were leaving Mumbai for good. Before leaving, they wanted to thank her in person. They had gone to her office and got this address. It happened that they lived in the same city. So they made a decision to give their house to Malti as a gift, since they no longer needed it.
Malti couldn’t believe it. She didn’t want to take something so valuable, yet the family’s kind firmness left her no choice but to accept. Looking into their smiling faces, she felt tears well up in her eyes. The years of loneliness and worry seemed to disappear, replaced by a quiet warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time. One small act of kindness so many years ago found its way back to her, in the most unexpected way. It was, she realized, a real miracle.
56. What happened to Malti’s apartment at the beginning of the story? (No more than 15 words)

Learning English Beyond the Classroom
Nowadays, with the growing popularity of smartphones and computers, an increasing number of students are choosing to learn English beyond the classroom in various ways.
From the chart above, we can see the percentage of students who choose listening to English songs and watching English movies is respectively 65% and 50%. However, those choosing reading English books and visiting English learning websites only account for 18% and 12%.
In my opinion, it is a disturbing trend. For students, what benefits their study most is reading English books. Due to their lack of self-discipline, they’re easily addicted to chatting online or playing games. It’s urgent for students to improve their self-discipline, and it’s also urgent for parents and teachers to strengthen the guidance.
