In 2004,when my daughter Becky was ten,she and my husband,Joe,were united in their desire for a dog.As
for me,I shared none of their wish.
But-why,they pleaded.Because I don't have time to take care of a dog."But we'll do it."Really?You're
going to walk the dog?Feed the dog?Bathre the dog?"Yes,yes and yes."I don't believe you."We will.We
promise.
They didn't.From day two (everyone wanted to walk the cute puppy that first day),neither thought to walk
the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots,to schedule her vet
appointments,to feed and clean her,Misty knew this on day one.As she looked up at the three new humans in her
life (small, medium, and large),she calculated,"The medium one is the sucker in the pack."
Quickly, she and 1 developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld )She'd look at me
with those sad brown eyes of hers, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand, which, strangely,I
almost always did.In no time, she became my fifth appendage )snoring on my home-office couch as I
worked, cradling against my feet as I'read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched television.
Even'so,part of me continued to resent walking duty.Joe and Becky had promised. Not fair,I'd balk
情愿地做)silently as she and I walked.“Not fair.”I'd loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our retumn home.
Then one-day-January 1,2007,to be exact-my husband's doctor uttered an unthinkable word:leukemia
()With that,I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospital, doing anything and everything I
could'to ease his discomfort.During those six months of hospitalizations,Becky,12 at that time, adjusted to other
adults being in the house-when she returned from school. My work colleagues adjusted to my taking off at a
moment's notice for medical emergencies.Every part of my life changed;no part of my old routine remained.
Save one:Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces,I
declined becausie I knew they had their own households to deal with.
As the months went by,I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning
before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to gather my thoughts or to just be before the day's
medical drama unfolded. The evening walk was a time to shake off the day's upsets and let the worry tracks in my
head go to white noise.
When serious illness visits your household,it's not just your daily routine and your assumptions about the
future that are no longer familiar.Pretty much everyone you know acts differently.
After Joe died in 2009,Misty slept on his pillow.
I'm grateful-to a point.The truth is,after years of balking,I've come to enjoy my walks with Misty.As I
watch her chase a squirrel, throwing her whole being into the here-and-now of an exercise that has never once
ended in victory, she reminded me,too, that no matter how harsh the present or unpredictable the future, there's
almost always some measure of joy to be extracted from the moment

Q
A quantum battery (has been built within a quantum computer, marking a.significant step toward
determining if it:could one day power future quantum technologies.
Conventional batteries store energy through chemical reactions.Quantum_batteries,however,rely on tiny
partieies called quantum bits(qubits,量子比特),nstead of chemicals,,these Batteries'store energy by focusing on
t伪e various ways these particles can stay边at the same.time一a phenomenon called superposition(叠加).This
unique process may-lead to better battery performance.
Some:studies have shown that using these special features can resuli in faster charging, but the practicality of
such quantum batteries remains ad open question.
"Many future quantum technologies will need their own versions of batteries,"says Diani Tan,a researcher in
Hefei,China."While we have made great progress in building quantum computers, the way these systems store
energy has not been fully explored."
Tan and his team built a prototype using 12 superconducting qubits arranged in-a network, where energy was
stored in the collective quantum state of the system. The researchers tested two different charging methods. One
worked like a conventional battery, while the seoond onestook advantage of the interactions between qubits. The
team found that the second method allowed the battery to charge more efficiently, gaining more power in less time.
This suggests that these unique interactions could be the key to better battery performance in the quantum world.
-Despite-these promising lab results, translating them into practical advantages is challenging."Comnparing
conventional batteries with quantum ones is difficult,"says Dominik Safranek at Charles University in the Czech
Republic. In his view, the path from laboratory breakthroughs to everyday consumer products remains unclear.
Tan sees his battery as a perfect match for future quantum computers. Now,the researchers want to combine
their battery with a quantum heat engine. This device would produce energy to be stored in the battery, creating a
self-sustaining system within a quantum computer.
46.How do quantum batteries store energy differently from conventional ones?
A.By using different.particle states.
B.By improving-chemical reactions.-
C.By adding more storage units.
D.By reducing the battery size.
47.Why did Tan's team test two different charging methods?
A.To.make.the conventional.battery system.efficient.-B.To find-the-best state-for-the-quantum batteries.
C.To simplify the conventional charging process.
D.To explore the advantage of quantum interactions.
48.What is Dominik Safranek's view on quantum batteries?
A.Their value remains to be proven.
B.Their performance is difficult to judge.
C.Their practical application is challenging.
D.Their lab result seems unsuccessful.
49.What will Tan's team probably do next?
A.Put the battery into a quantum computer.
B.Build a new classical heat engine
C.Make their charging methods better.
D.Link the battery to a heat engine.
50.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The status and future of conventional batteries.
B.The potential and challenges of quantum batteries.
C.The chemical principles behind conventional storagc.D.The guaranteed success of fast quantum charging.

In an increasingly individualistic world,the act of giving-whether time,resources,or skills-serves as a
powerful antidote to societal isolation.Engaging in cbarity activitics fosters deeper human connections, enhances
interpersonal relationships, and profoundly influences individuals'mental and emotional well-being.This essay
explores the multifaceted benefits of altruism(利他主义),emphasizing its role in nurturing community bonds and
promoting individual fulfillment.
At the core of voluntary engagement lies the natural buman desire for connection.Participating in community
service or charitable initiatives cultivates a sense of belonging, linking individuals with like-minded peers who
share similar values and commitments. These shared experiences often lead to the formation of lasting friendships
and networks,as individuals unite under a common purpose. For instance, volunteering at a local shelter not only
addresses immediate community needs but also offers participants an opportunity to connecf on a personal level,
thus reinforcing social ties that might otherwise remain superficial.
Moreover, altruism has been shown to contribute significantly to an individual's mental health.Engaging in
acts of kindness triggers the release of endorphins(内啡肽),the so-called“helper's high,"whicb can enhance
mood and promote feelings of happiness.Research by the Journal of Happiness Studies indicates that individuals
who engage in regular volunteer work experience lower rates of depression and anxiety, leading to an overall
improvement in life satisfaction. This psychological uplift extends beyond the individual,as happy people are
more likely to engage positively in their communities, creating a positive cycle of aluuism and well-being.
Furthermore, acts of kindness cultivate empathy and inner strength, attributes essential for enduring human
relationships.By actively engaging with diverse communities and understanding the struggles faced by others,
individuals reinforce their capacity for compassion. This deepened empathy not only enhances interpersonal
dynamics but also fosters a more inclusive and understanding society.Additionally, the experiences drawn from
voluntary activity often encourage reflection and personal growth, helping individuals develop coping
mechanisms and emotional perseverance.
In conclusion, the benefits of goodwill extend far beyond the immediate impact of charitable acts.By
fostering interpersonal connections and enhancing emotional well-being,acts of giving play a crucial role in
building stronger, more resilient communities. In a world increasingly characterized by isolation and detachment,
the embrace of altruism presents a powerful solution to reinvigorate (..human connections and improve
individual mental health. The culfivation of a giving spirit enriches not only the lives of those we help but also our
own, creating a more compassionate and harmonious socicty.By choosing to engage in giving,we can transform
not only our lives but also the fabric of our communities.

A The release of endorphins that improve mood.
B.The significant improvement of social fairness.
C.The building of lasting friendships and social networks.
D.The cultivation of empathy and emotional resilience
53.What is the main idea of the essay?
A.Individualism is.the root cause of societal problems.
B.Altruism is the.only solution to mental health issues.
C.Giving behavior benefit individuals and communities in many ways.
D.Modern society is becoming more and more individualistic and isolated.
54.How is the passage mainly organized?
A.By presenting a problem and then offering several solutions.
B.By stating a claim and.supporting it with three arguments.
C.By comparing different views on the value of acts of kindness.
D.By listing historical examples to explain altruistic behavior.
55.Based on the essay, what can be inferred fror the passage?
A.People without extra money are not able to participate in charity effectively.
B.Social isolation in modern society is mainly caused by laok of charity.
C.Being kind would have significant impact on health.
D.Being kind can remove depression and anxiety.

From Jan 16 to 23,a group of high school students worked wifh a youth media platform to create a short
English play called The Taste of Tarifs ()Through the project, they not only explored a global issue, but also
learned.an important lesson about teamwork.
The idea came from a newspaper article about tariffs The students found the topic fresh and meaningful, and
during a study trip they continued discussing it on a high-speed train.Their excitement was so great that they even
held auditions in the aisle.By the time they arrived, the team had already been formed.
However,as rehearsals began, conflict soon arose ()Two students, who were responsible for writing the
script ()disagreed strongly about how the story should be told. One wanted the play to focus on facts and
logic so that it would sound serious and convincing. The other believed that it should include more emotion and
dramatic scenes to attract the audience.Neither would give in.Their argument beoame so heated that rehearsal had
to stop, and the rest of the team sat in silence.
The disagreement affected everyone. Some students began to worry that the play would fail.Others grew
impatient because time was tight.Seeing the tension, the team leader suggested that they stop arguing and listen to
each other's ideas one by one. After a long discussion, they finally realised that a good play needed both clear
ideas and strong storytelling. So they rewrote part of the script together, keeping the important facts while adding
more vivid dialogue and action
Another problem arose on the filming day.Two actors were found unsuitable for their original roles. One of
them felt unhappy when asked to change parts because he had practised for days.But.after the others explained
the situation,he accepted the decision for the good of the team.Everyone then worked quickly to adjust the lines
and filming plan.
In the end,the play was completed successfully.A teacher who watched the process said she was most
impressed not by,the final.performnance, but by the way the students dealt with corflict. For them, the project
