B In the heart of a busy city, there was a small coffee shop named “The Daily Grind”. It was a popular place for students and office workers. For years, a homeless cat named Oliver was part of the shop’s daily life. Oliver was a grey cat with a small tear in his ear. He wasn’t allowed inside, but he had a special place on a bench by the window. The baristas (咖啡师), especially a kind girl named Maya, would always leave some food and water for him. In return, Oliver would sit quietly, watching people come and go. One cold and rainy Tuesday, the shop was very quiet. Maya noticed that Oliver was not in his usual place. She felt worried. She had grown fond of the little cat, and his absence made the shop feel empty. Just as she was about to close, an elderly man, Mr Henderson, came to the counter. He was a regular customer. “Maya,” he said gently, “I saw your friend Oliver. He was shivering in the rain. I took him home to keep him warm.” Maya was surprised and a little sad. She understood his kindness, but she was worried about Oliver in a new place. Mr Henderson smiled. “Don’t worry. He is safe and warm. I live alone, and I thought he could be my friend.” The next day, Maya visited Mr Henderson with some cat treats. When she arrived, she saw Oliver sleeping peacefully on a soft cushion (垫子) by the fireplace. He looked happy and comfortable. Mr Henderson sat nearby, reading a book with a smile. “He is a great companion,” he said. “We are keeping each other company.” Maya felt relieved and happy. She realized that kindness can create unexpected friendships. Oliver, the little cat who brought joy to the coffee shop, had now found a loving home. ▲. Oliver had become a bridge between two kind people B. Maya decided to let Oliver stay with Mr Henderson forever C. The coffee shop would never be the same without Oliver D. Mr Henderson promised to bring Oliver back to the shop every day 30. What is the best title for the text? A. A Homeless Cat’s Journey B. The Daily Grind Coffee Shop C. Maya and Mr Henderson’s Friendship D. A Kindness That Connected Two People C In recent years, short-form videos have become very popular around the world. Compared with traditional long-form videos, they are more convenient to watch. However, some Chinese researchers have some worries about the influence from these videos. They have recently studied how short-form videos reshape our brains, and influence our genes (基因). The new study found that watching short-form videos can greatly increase brain activity in regions connected to pleasure processing and emotion regulation (情绪调节). This may lead to biological and neurological (神经系统的) problems, such as less self-control and emotional ups and downs. For the study, the researchers chose 111 college students between the ages of 17 and 30 who often used social media and spent at least 1 hour daily on short-form videos. Besides, the study paid special attention to the use of short-form video apps rather than general smartphone use. Researchers collected their brain imaging information using MRI scans (核磁共振扫描) to see the neurological effects of short-form videos, especially in terms of structural changes and functional activity in the brain. The results were surprising. People who were addicted to short-form videos——spending over 3 hours daily—showed functional and structural brain differences compared with others. There was an increase in gray matter volume (灰质体积), which is important to decision-making, information processing, and emotional control. This makes the brain easier to be influenced by the quick pleasure that one gets from watching one video after another, making it harder to stop. Moreover, the researchers found nearly 500 genes connected to brain changes because of being crazy about short-form videos. Interestingly, most of these genes become active during the teenage years, which suggests that teenagers are easily influenced by these videos. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 31. What did the new study find about watching short-form videos? A. It can improve people’s self-control. B. It may cause emotional ups and downs. C. It has no influence on brain activity. D. It helps people control emotions better. 32. What does the third-paragraph mainly tell us? A. The people and methods used in the study. B. The specific brain changes found in heavy social media users. C. The structural differences in gray matter volume of college students. D. The genetic (遗传学的) reasons why teenagers are addicted to short-form videos. 33. What does the underlined word “addicted” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. unable to stop doing or having something B. doing things with little energy C. angry or bored with something D. not having any feelings about a thing 34. Why are teenagers easily influenced by short-form videos according to the study? A. Because they can’t make good decisions. B. Because their brains change a lot during these years. C. Because they spend too much time online. D. Because they don’t have enough gray matter. 35. What’s the writing purpose of the passage? A. To tell readers how to use short-form video apps properly. B. To advise teenagers to stay away from all social media. C. To explain why short-form videos are popular around the world. D. To introduce a study about short-form videos’ influence on brains and genes. D Chinese culture is rich with idioms that carry deep historical meanings. Two interesting examples are “drinking ink” and “An inch of time is worth an inch of gold.” Let’s look at the first idiom “drinking ink”.____36____ During the Northern Qi Dynasty, those who performed poorly in imperial exams or had terrible handwriting were actually punished by being forced to drink ink. ___37___ Although it sounds extreme, the rule was widely accepted at that time. 【答案】31. B 32. A 33. A 34. B 35. It’s my great honor to stand here and share a traditional art I love with you. The traditional art I love most is Chinese paper cutting. I fell in love with it as a child. One Spring Festival, my grandmother showed me how to cut a red paper into a beautiful “Fu” character. I was deeply amazed by her skill. Since then, I have spent much free time practicing it.
