Passage 1
(24-25·八下·湖南长沙一中新华都学校·期末)
When I was a kid, my mom would let me help her make popcorn on cold winter nights. We would get out a pan, some oil and butter, and wait for the first popcorn to jump with an exciting sound. Then, we would shake the pan over the stove to prevent (防止) the popcorn from burning-shake, shake, shake, and pop, pop, pop—until the pan was filled with delicious popcorn! Mom would pour it all into a big bowl and add some sugar on top.
Later, we would all come to the living room. Dad would sit in his chair, while my mom, brothers, and I would relax on the sofa. Although there was always a lot of popcorn, we could eat it up quickly. And mom even let me eat the half-popped kernels (玉米粒).
The funny thing is that I have already forgotten the shows we watched, but I still remember the smell of the popcorn and the warmth of the bowl. The joy of being with my family made me feel so loved, safe and happy. We didn’t have a big house, expensive snacks or much money, but our love for each other was everything.

Seeing his students perform at the Spring Festival Gala Jibu Xiaolong had a strong feeling of satisfaction. “We will never forget the experience,” he says.

Passage 10
(24-25·八下·湖南衡阳四校·期末)
You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese ?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (红楼梦) written by Cao Xueqin (1715-1763). Named as one of China’s Four Great Classics, the book has a far-reaching influence on later writers. Now the book has been made into an English language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures , including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book , which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbreaking story that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, China, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up, there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to“ have made a contribution (贡献) land where my parents were born”.

If you are a book-lover, you must know the classic novel Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. I’ve grown up. This book is still one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from the main character, Lemuel Gulliver.
In our real world, how do you feel when you are suddenly in a strange and dangerous place? I believe most of us would feel worried and lost. Lemuel Gulliver, however, had a special way to deal with the strange situations (情况) he got into.
When Gulliver first woke up on the beach of Lilliput, he saw many little people around him, who were no taller than his finger. At first, he was really scared. The Lilliputians, seeing this huge person, were also afraid and didn’t believe him. They tied him up and thought he might be a threat. But Gulliver didn’t get angry or worried. Instead, he tried to talk with the Lilliputians. He showed them his kindness and goodwill. For example, when the Lilliputians were in danger because a nearby kingdom attacked (袭击) them, Gulliver saved them by pulling the ships away.
This story teaches me a useful lesson: In the face of difficulties, we should keep an open mind and be kind. The next time you find yourself in a challenging situation, try to understand the other side, and find things you have in common. C.The Lilliputians didn’t need Gulliver’s help at all.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The lesson the writer learnt from Gulliver’s Travels.

Alice Hamilton, 17I’m going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific—I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
Jason Moore, 18This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
