Imagine getting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services through your smartphone. You just need to take a photo of the tongue (舌头), and then you can get a health report in under 2 minutes. The long and tiring hospital trip is no longer necessary. Thanks to a new app, this has come true.
Why can it be so convenient? Because the app mixes TCM examination with modern AI technology. In half a year, it has helped over 30,000 users, and 94% of them are satisfied with the results.
TCM-AI tools like this app are playing a bigger part in improving healthcare. They are especially helpful in some faraway areas with few experienced doctors. People in those areas can now get quality TCM services without leaving the area, though accurate diagnosis (精确的诊断) still depends on the doctor’s skilled judgment.
Although AI has made progress in TCM, there are still big challenges. One of them is that TCM lacks (缺少) standard rules. TCM has many different schools (流派) and methods that have developed over thousands of years. They may offer different treatments for the same illness, and that’s why it is hard for AI to learn. To solve the problem, China is working on making standards for TCM by setting up 180 national and 30 international standards by 2026. Researchers are also building better TCM-AI tools.
In short, AI and TCM working together will greatly improve healthcare by making it easier to get TCM services. However, this is just the beginning, and there is still much work to do. With joint efforts, TCM is expected to improve healthcare quality and help more communities.

John, a 13-year-old boy, was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and he has to sit in a wheelchair. When he was young, he found many playgrounds were not suitable for people like him. As he grew up, he once hung out at a special playground for kids with different disabilities. John even helped to design it.
Two years ago, John went to Glen Lake Elementary School. At that time, the teachers and students in that school wanted to replace the old facilities (设施) because they noticed kids in wheelchairs could not use them. Because of his own experience, John offered help in the project.
It took much money to build a good playground — $300,000 in total! So they began raising money by visiting businesses for donations and holding sales. Luckily, some organizations came to help. For example, a famous company gave $50,000. With this support, the project moved forward successfully.
John’s mom thinks he is a great helper for disabled kids and always cares about others’ needs. Now John is working on a new playground at his middle school. “I can help make the world a better place,” he says.

Fun Horse Idioms (习语)
The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse. In Chinese culture, the horse means energy, speed and success. People often say “ma dao cheng gong” to wish others success.
For example, if someone is in a hurry or acts too quickly, we can gently tell him “hold your horses”. It’s a way to ask them to calm down and think twice before doing something.
If news comes “straight from the horse’s mouth”, that means it is first-hand information and it’s very truthful.
When a person — like a student, an athlete or a competitor — does much better than people expect and surprises everyone, we call him a “dark horse”. We often use this word in exams, sports games and competitions.
When we get gifts from others, we are supposed to be happy for whatever we receive. We should always thank others’ kindness, and never “look a gift horse in the mouth”.
Besides, we need to do things in the right order and plan well. If we do things in the wrong order or care about unimportant things first, we “put the cart before the horse”.
These horse idioms are fun to learn and they are useful in daily communication. In the Year of the Horse, let’s learn from the horse’s energy. Keep working and achieving success.
A.a dark horse
B.hold your horses
C.look a gift horse in the mouth
D.straight from the horse’s mouth
E.put the cart before the horse

In ancient times, people needed to pass down knowledge to stay alive, so parents taught their kids skills like hunting (捕猎), farming and cooking. But as more people lived together in towns, they had a better idea: what if one teacher could teach many kids at once? That was how ideas about school began.
The school system goes back thousands of years. Boys from rich families in ancient Greece were sent to school when they were 16. In ancient Rome, families would have tutors (家庭教师) to teach their children at home. The Xia Dynasty saw the beginning of school in ancient China.
The modern schools we have today are much newer. In the 19th century, a man in the US named Horace Mann believed that every child should go to school and learn, even if their family was poor. So he created “common schools”. Money from taxes (税) kept them going. He also made sure teachers were trained properly to be good at their jobs. His big idea was to bring kids from all different backgrounds together in one classroom.
Next time when you go to school, remember that you are part of a big idea — every child should be able to learn and have a bright future.

How to Keep a Healthy Lifestyle
Nowadays, with the fast pace of life, many people pay little attention to their health, which easily leads to tiredness, stress and even small illnesses. In fact, a healthy lifestyle is very important for everyone, as it not only keeps our bodies strong but also helps us stay in a good mood. Here are some practical and useful suggestions for you to keep a healthy lifestyle.
Develop healthy eating habits. You need to eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables every day, such as apples, carrots and spinach, which are rich in vitamins and fiber and can help our bodies work well. At the same time, try to stay away from too much junk food like hamburgers, fried chicken and ice-cream, as they are high in fat and sugar and bad for our health. Besides, it’s wise to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day instead of sugary drinks like cola.
Take enough regular exercise. Doing sports for about thirty minutes each day is a good choice—it can make you strong, improve your memory and help you relax after a busy day. You can walk to school, run in the morning, or play ball games with your friends after class. Remember not to exercise too much at one time, which will make you tired.
Keep a regular schedule and get enough sleep. You should sleep at least eight hours every night and go to bed before 10:30 pm. Don’t stay up late using phones or watching TV, because a good rest can make you energetic the next day and help your body recover.
Keeping a happy mood is also necessary. When you feel stressed or upset, you can listen to soft music, talk with your family or friends, or go for a walk in the park. Try to stay relaxed and positive every day.

One recent weekend, I decided to learn how to make jiaozi with my grandmother. I thought it would be fun and easy at the very beginning, but soon it came to me that it wasn’t as simple as it looked.
At first, I didn’t pay attention to the sharp (锋利的) knife while cutting vegetables. My finger got cut because of my carelessness. Luckily, it wasn’t serious. Grandma was nervous, and quickly helped me clean the cut. “My poor little girl! Be careful next time!” said Grandma softly. Through the painful lesson, I learned the hard way that safety should always come first.
After that accident, I continued working with Grandma. We made the dough (面团), mixed the filling, and started shaping the dumplings. However, I kept making mistakes. Some of my dumplings were too thick, others were not properly sealed (封闭), and some even had too much filling, making them difficult to close. It was so discouraging, but Grandma kept encouraging me.
Until noon, we had a plate full of dumplings—some were perfect, and some were a bit messy. Dad ate my ugliest dumpling first. “Tastes better than it looks!” he laughed. Mom encouraged me, “I think __________________. I am so proud of you!”
Now I understand that making jiaozi isn’t just about the final product; it is about learning patience, having fun with my family, and improving through mistakes. Mistakes aren’t signs of weakness. Instead, they should be viewed (看待) as stepping stones to achievements.
36.What did the writer think of making jiaozi at the very beginning?
37.What happened to the writer’s finger because of her carelessness?
38.Did the writer give up making jiaozi after the accident?

My name is Lily. I love traditional arts. When I was in Grade 7, I wanted to learn a new art form. At that time, my biggest dream was to learn Chinese calligraphy (书法).
Later, I saw a calligraphy show at our school. I was so interested in it that I decided to learn calligraphy. I found a calligraphy club in our city by chance. It had classes fit for students. In September 2023, I began to learn. To attend the classes, I went there every Sunday and spent 2 hours practising. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practised a lot at home. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese characters (汉字) and joined in activities like calligraphy competitions. I increasingly dreamed of showing my works.
My calligraphy teacher Mrs Zhang always said, “Practice makes perfect.” She suggested that I should take part in a calligraphy exchange in Beijing. So in July 2024, I went to Beijing with my club members. During the trip, as the best calligrapher among us, I tried to help others. I taught them how to hold the brush and write beautiful characters. This experience encouraged me to learn more.

Imagine being unable to move or speak, yet still able to control your home or a robotic arm—just by thinking. This sounds like science fiction, but it’s becoming reality. Companies like Neuralink are developing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, which creates a direct connection between the human brain and computers.
How can BCI make it? Actually, it is a system that can read the brain’s signals and translate them into orders. Although the idea has been around since the 20th century, with the development of neuroscience (神经科学) and artificial intelligence (AI), BCI technology is developing faster than ever.
BCI can change many parts of users’ life. For disabled people, it can be a window to the world. It’s possible for them to move again or search online by using their thoughts. For common people, BCI could create much pleasure and educational experiences through controlling the video game or simulation with your mind. BCI also provides much convenience for the public services. Firefighters might guide robots into dangerous situations while staying safe themselves.
China is also making impressive progress in BCI research. A Chinese research team led by Fang Ying at the Beijing Institute of Brain Research has created a safer micro-electrode that can adapt to the brain’s natural movement.
Although making BCI work perfectly is quite challenging, the researchers are confident that the system can be quickly improved over the next few years. “This work gives us real hope. We believe that speech BCIs can one day restore communication that is as fluent, natural, and comfortable as conversational speech,” says neuroscientist Frank Willett.

The aim of education or culture is merely the development of good taste in knowledge and good form in conduct. The cultured man or the ideal educated man is not necessarily one who is well-read or learned, but one who likes and dislikes the right things. To know what to love and what to hate is to have taste in knowledge.
Nothing is more annoying than to meet a person at a party whose mind is crammed full with historical dates and figures and who is extremely well-posted on current international affairs, but whose attitudes or points of view are all wrong. I have met such people. They do have great academic knowledge, but no good judgment or taste. Being knowledgeable is a mere matter of the cramming of facts or information while having good taste is a matter of artistic judgment. In speaking of a scholar, the Chinese generally distinguish between their scholarship, conduct and taste.
An educated man, therefore, is one who has the right loves and hatreds. This we call taste, and with taste comes charm. Now, to have taste requires a capacity for thinking things through to the bottom, the independence of judgment, and the unwillingness to be affected by any form of power. When a man is wrong, he is wrong, and there is no need for one to be impressed by a great name or by the number of books that he has read and we haven’t.
Taste, then, is closely associated with courage, as the Chinese always associated *dan* (“胆”) with *shi* (“识”). And courage or independence of judgment, as we know, is such a rare virtue among humankind. We see this intellectual courage or independence during the childhood of all thinkers and writers who in later life amount to anything. Such a person refuses to be impressed by a philosophic vogue or a fashionable theory, even though it is backed by the greatest name. This is taste in knowledge. No doubt such intellectual courage or independence of judgment requires a certain childish, naive confidence in oneself, but this self is the only thing that one can cling to, and the moment a student gives up his right of personal judgment, he is in for accepting all the dishonest and insincere of life.
61.What does the author say the aim of education or culture is?
62.What kind of person does the author find annoying at a party?
63.According to the author, what is the difference between being knowledgeable and having taste?
64.What qualities does the author say taste requires?
65.Why does the author associate taste with courage?

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Because the Earth looks like a ball, the Sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the Earth is having day and the other half night. At the equator (赤道), day and night are always the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The Sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted (北极倾斜) towards the Sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator, nights are longer than days. For six months the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sun. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator, nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of nights. Summer is the season of long days.
71.How many hours does “day” mean in “days in a year”?

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. In different cultures, horses stand for similar things, but with occasional (偶尔的) exceptions.
In China, the horse carries many positive meanings, such as smart and energetic, and we can see them in Chinese idioms. For example, a talented person is often called “qianlima”, a horse that covers a thousand li a day. And someone who is good at finding talent is referred to as “bole”, a person who could tell a good horse by its looks in ancient China. Other horse-related phrases in Chinese include “madaochenggong”, which means instant success and “longmajingshen”, which means full of energy.
Horses are also said to have powerful brains with “excellent memories”, according to Discovery News. Maybe that’s why a Chinese idiom goes: “An old horse knows the way.”
In other cultures, horses are also important and special. In the Middle Ages, the horse was a symbol of chivalry (骑士精神) and nobility (高贵品质) in Western societies. In fact, the word “chivalry” comes from the Old French word “cheval”, which meant horse. The idea of chivalry helped to shape the 19th-century image of the “gentleman”, which was known for good manners, courage and loyalty (忠诚) to friends.
Since the horse is honored as a symbol of energy, loyalty, strong will and intelligence. people born in the Year of the Horse are also believed to have these great qualities.

Why should students play sports? Some people think that students play sports in order to get exercise. Others think it can help students have fun. But that is not enough. If students play sports, they can get more than healthy bodies. Why? Here are three more reasons.
Students who play sports do better in school. Some people think that doing exercise will take up students’ study time. But a recent study has shown that students who play sports get better scores in school than those who don’t. Exercise gets students to learn, remember things and concentrate (注意) better.
Students who play sports develop their teamwork spirits and learn problem-solving skills. When they are working together with others to win games and reach goals, they’re learning how to be
successful in practice. And these skills will be useful to them for study or their future work.
Playing sports can also improve confidence. Students who play sports feel better about themselves. When they know they can improve and reach their goals by practising, it builds their confidence. And sports can also help them communicate with others actively and make new friends.
Now, how about going out to play sports with your friends every day?

Every summer, Serena spends two weeks at Green Farm’s horseback riding camp. Last year, Serena and her favorite horse Piper finished second in the obstacle course (障碍赛赛道) race.
“I can’t wait to ride Piper,” Serena told Rose, her coach. Rose advised Serena to ride Harley instead of Piper. Because Piper is for new riders as one of the best-behaved horses.
At first, Serena felt scared at the sight of Harley, the tallest horse, but she stayed hopeful. As she was trying to ride Harley, he threw Serena off.
“I’m scared of Harley. He’s too hard to control,” Serena told Rose.
“Harley is in a new place with a new person on his back,” Rose explained. “He’s pretty scared, too. But if you trust him, he will trust you.”
Serena decided that it was time for a fresh start. “I know you’re afraid of me. But we can become friends,” she talked to Harley softly. After a while, Harley calmed down, and Serena realized she was also feeling calmer. She then led Harley for a walk so that he could get used to being with her and following her directions.
Soon, Serena and Harley made progress together as their confidence in each other grew. By the end of the first week, they completed the obstacle course together.
On the final day of the camp was the big race. Serena confidently climbed onto Harley. Harley, sensing the excitement, ran through the course like a madman and easily won. The other horses were just no match for Harley.
Rose handed Serena the winner’s trophy (奖杯) with a wink (眼). Serena suddenly realized that Rose had wanted her to challenge herself to be a better rider.
Serena hugged Rose and then took the trophy, and a carrot, over to Harley.
