M: Why not?
W: Because I’m not smart.
M: Yeah, it can be scary.
W: Did you ever come close to dropping out, Dad?
M: No. But I worried a lot before I went, because I thought college would be full of brains. Once I got there, I found out that most of the kids were just like me.

M: Well, I was just wondering if you could help me with my history lessons because I’ve been absent for three days.
W: Sure, why were you absent for so long?
M: I was pretty sick after my trip to London, so the doctor suggested that I should not attend classes for a couple of days in order to rest. And my father helped me ask for sick leave. I decided to ask for your help because you always get good grades in history.
W: I’m sorry to hear that you were sick, Sam. Don’t worry, I’ll help you out. Where should we start? What is the last topic you have in your notes?
M: Let me see. I do recall that the last notes I have are about the wars between Athens and Sparta. I missed pretty much everything that came after that period in history.
W: OK, there is a lot of information to cover then.
M: So what time is convenient for you? Then I’ll come to your home, say six p.m.?
W: We’d better start an hour later because we usually have dinner at that time.
M: Okay.

A. She will be otherwise occupied.
B. She needs more preparation time.

M: Our team needs to finish the river clean-up project this weekend to meet the environmental report deadline. Can you join us on Saturday?
W: I’d love to help, but I have my basketball finals scheduled for Saturday. However, I’m completely free on Sunday. Would that work?
M: Unfortunately, the report must be submitted by Monday morning. If we wait until Sunday, there won’t be enough time to analyze the data and finalize the report.
W: I understand the urgency. Here’s an idea — what if I handle all the data analysis tonight after practice? That way, you only need to focus on collecting water and soil samples on Saturday.
M: That’s a great solution! To speed things up, let’s ask Jenny to assist with the fieldwork on Saturday. She’s experienced with sample collection.
W: Perfect! I’ll send you the analyzed data by midnight tonight. Good luck with the fieldwork, and let me know if you need anything else.
M: Thanks! This plan should ensure we meet the deadline without compromising quality.

M: I did, but most articles are too difficult. Maybe I should choose an easier topic.
W: Don’t give up! The writing center tutors can help you analyze those articles.

W: Well, I love our school dining hall. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m feeling hungry again. But I have to go to the library first to do my project.

A. In the morning. B. In the afternoon. C. In the evening.
16. What is Grace’s final suggestion?
A. Use a planner. B. Set clear study goals.
C. Balance learning and rest.
M: So, Grace, what was the biggest difficulty that you had in managing your time at university?
W: Well, when I started college, I couldn’t believe how much free time I had. Compared with high school, I only had to go to a couple of classes a day in college! It was wonderful! But then halfway through the first term, I realized I was supposed to be studying the rest of the time!
M: So, what advice would you give to new college students?
W: Well, professors expect you to work a lot outside of class. So use a planner. It’s also important to know what the best time for you to study is. Like, after two years, I finally realized that I don’t do my best work late in the evening! So now I try to schedule my classes for the afternoon and the evening, and study the rest of the day on my own. Oh, and one more thing. Take breaks! Don’t think you can study effectively for six hours straight!

W: It was actually a fascinating class. Professor Smith discussed a new type of fuel.
M: Oh, right. What is it?
W: It’s about CNG.
M: Oh, I’ve heard of CNG before. It’s a kind of eco-friendly fuel, isn’t it?
W: Exactly. CNG is good for the environment and it’s suitable to be used as a fuel in vehicles and industrial applications.
M: So CNG doesn’t pollute the air when it’s burned in an engine?
W: Professor Smith says CNG produces fewer emissions compared to petrol, making it a cleaner alternative. And it’s more efficient.
M: When do you think it will replace other fuels?
W: It won’t be anytime soon. It’s expensive to produce on a large scale.
M: Well, thanks for the update. I suppose I won’t need to look at your notes.
W: Actually, you might want to. We have a test coming up next week.

W: To put it briefly, it is aimed at helping children connect math with creativity.
M: How did you become so interested in this program?
W: As a teacher for over 10 years, I noticed a big difference between children who were creative and children who were more logical, mathematical brains. So, I realized that we could bridge the two, creativity and math, to make a program called Calculate and Create.
M: Tell us a bit more about this program and how it works.
W: We provide online courses, in-person classes, and after-school programs. The after-school programs attract the largest number of students.
M: What can we do to help our kids connect math with creativity?

M: What else can I do?
W: You can give your children access to math tools that they can use at home, whether it’s a tape measure or a measuring cup.

M: So that’s what helped you decide?
W: Actually, it was that I came across a book written by experienced teachers on student attitudes and that motivated me to go for the topic.
M: Okay. So what were your research questions or issues?
W: Well, I wanted to look at the ways students responded to different teachers, particularly focusing on whether very strict teachers made teenagers less motivated.
M: And, did you find that was true?
W: No, not from what I saw, you know, from my five days’ observation, talking to people and so forth.

Over to my left is the library, and besides being the main place where students do research for paper. It’s also where a lot of students hang out between classes. There are computers and comfortable chairs everywhere, and on each floor, there are areas that do not require you to be quiet. Perhaps this is why our students like it so much. Down the road to my right is the student center, where students can buy coffee, snacks, and official Davidson College clothing. The student center is open until 10 p.m. on school nights and until 2 a.m. on weekend nights. Carson Gym, which is named after one of Davidson’s most famous professors, is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You can play almost every sport you can imagine there, and there are health classes like yoga and group dance every day except Wednesday. All right, we’re coming up to the stadium now.

To join the camp, all you need to do is submit a short essay about your favorite project, together with a teacher’s recommendation letter. During the camp, you will work with college professors on small research projects, make friends with students from other schools, and even receive a certificate that will be helpful for your college applications. All of our leaders are former participants themselves, which means they truly understand what you need. They are patient, enthusiastic, and always ready to support you whenever you face difficulties.
So what do past participants think about the camp? Well over 90% of them said it was the best summer experience they had. One student even told me that the camp helped her confirm her dream of studying engineering. If you’ve got the passion to become a young scientist, come and discover what we have to offer.

W: Good morning, and welcome to the Main library of the University of British Columbia. I’m the head librarian and happy to give you a simple introduction to our library. I’ve been working here since 1961, back in the days when the only electrical or electronic things here were the lights. Oh, and the phones, of course. Mechanical typewriter then, no cell phones. Computers in a library? No way. Everything was on paper. If you needed to find something, you went to the book list. And if that didn’t help, you asked one of the librarians. And if that didn’t work, you told your professor that you couldn’t write the essay because the library didn’t have the book you needed.
At present, we’ve got about 15 computers on each of our four floors. If you know the title or the author, then you can find out where it is. A word about taking books out. The usual lending period is two weeks, but a few books in great demand can only be taken out for two days. Your great new smart student card is also your library card, and you can also use it to pay at the student Cafeteria. Okay, I guess that’s enough here. Let’s move up to the second floor.

Good morning everyone. Before we begin today’s meeting, I have an exciting announcement to make. As part of our end of year celebrations, the governors have agreed for the school to hold a rather amazing Fun Day. Starting at midday on June 23rd the school grounds will stage a fun fair with exciting rides and games to enjoy. The school canteen will be open for refreshments and there’ll also be various competitions including sports games on the field and swimming races in the leisure hall. In the evening, there will be a concert. We have various bands lined up, including the school’s own chorus, as well as a number of local groups. The day is totally free for school students, but please note there will be a small fee for parents and other family members. But all this is still eight months away. There will be more details coming out closer to the event and as always, our school website will have all the up-to-date information. Which reminds me, can I ask all members of our website building club to see me at break time? There are a few important updates we’ve been advised to make.

W: Hello everyone. I’m the director of The Jeeves School and this morning I’m going to go through some information to help you all make sure your time here goes well. So, first of all, lateness. We have quite a strict policy. If you are more than 10 minutes late, we ask you to wait until the break to join the class, so the rest of the class can work better. There isn’t an exact time for the break, but it tends to be around 10:30, and they’re usually half an hour. There’s a coffee machine in the student common room downstairs. But the machine has a habit of breaking down, so if you find it’s not working, please tell Jenny at the reception desk. There are toilets on the second floor and ground floor. These are regularly cleaned so we don’t tend to have any problems with them. As well as the courses, we have a great social program. Activities are open to everyone and they have a habit of filling up quickly, so check the noticeboard in the common room for new events. You can book with Kit, our social program organizer. And finally, as a rule, we have a free barbecue on the first Friday of every month. That’s all from me. Any questions?

W: Hello everyone, welcome to creative day school. This summer we provide two full-time summer camp programs. Both will last the entire time the children are out of school.
Our first summer camp is for our four-year-olds called mini camp. This mini camp will still have their normal everyday schedule with a lot of fun activities. At least once a week, our mini campers will go on a field trip. These field trips could consist of a day at the beach or exploring the natural museum. Our older summer camp is provided for ages 5 through 12. There are scheduled summer fun activities and games. The children will participate in art, outdoor play, games and much more. Swimming at a nearby pool is often a weekly field trip for ages 6 and up. Other field trips could include bowling a day at the movies or a picnic in the park. Permission of parents and activity fees are required to participate in all field trips.
Now, let’s watch a five-minute film about last year’s programs.

Our school’s book fair is happening in the library this week from eight o’clock AM until four o’clock PM Monday through Thursday. Most books will be under 10 dollars.
Mrs Wright’s class is also hosting a bake sale to support the school’s sports teams. Muffins, cookies, cakes and other treats will be available at the book fair. We are requesting parent volunteers for the parent teacher association.
We need a few people to step in and organize meetings, plan after-school activities and host more fundraising events. If you are interested in participating, please come by the office. I know that many of your children hang out in the computer lab after school, but it will be closed this week for repairs. The lab will open again on Monday. C. Divide the work.

70. What does the speaker do?
A. A worker. B. A teacher. C. A reporter.
M: I have been getting quite a few emails with questions about grading for the group projects, so let me clarify that before we start class today. The group project includes a written report and a presentation. But I’ll give you three grades. First, I’ll grade the written report as a whole, and every member of that group will receive the same grade on the written report, so you can divide the work and produce the best report together. The second grade is for the presentation, which is also a group grade. Again, I suggest you share the labor here. And remember everyone has the potential to contribute something to the group. The final grade is a personal grade based on your contribution to the group. And I’ll give you a grade based on your contribution. To be as fair as possible, I’ll ask for the signature of every group member on your list, checking that your list is appropriate for the work you have done. So I’ll have the three grades and add them together and average them to give you a total grade.
