【原文】W: Tom, what are you going to do in the future?
M: I want to be a scientist.
W: Can you tell me why?
M: I think scientists contribute a lot to our comfortable lives. I want to be a useful person.
W: Sounds great! Then who’s your favorite scientist?
M: Copernicus! He discovered the sun was the center of the universe, and all the planets went around it. Our ideas of the universe are all based on his theory. And his theory even influenced the work of the great scientists, like Newton and Einstein afterwards.
W: Wow! I wonder how he made his discoveries.
M: Well, at his time, people believed the earth was the center of the universe, but if that was the case, somethings didn’t make sense. So, Copernicus tried to find an answer. He collected observations of the stars. and used all his mathematical knowledge to study them. That finally led to his theory.
W: Copernicus was great indeed!
M: That’s for sure! But unluckily, he didn’t publish his theory until he was dying.
W: How come?
M: At that time, the Christian Church was extremely strict about ideas. If Copernicus put forward his theory, the theory would certainly have been turned down. And he himself would have been attacked and punished, too.

A. An educator. B. A musician. C. An astronaut.

M: I was curious about outer space and wanted to fly to the moon.
W: A big dream. When people are in their childhood, their dreams are likely to be based on pure passion and imagination. However, before entering the workforce, these youthful perspectives begin to shift.

【详解】M: We need to set the schedule for the talent show. I strongly think we should start and end with musical performances. It’ll set the right mood and close the show on a high note.
W: I get what you’re saying, but I have a different idea. We should open with something more eye-catching, like a special individual performance, and put the rock band on last.
M: Hmm, maybe we could start with the piano player and the singer. That pair will hold everyone’s attention. Or let’s not have them too late in the show and people might be getting tired.
W: That’s true. How about we have them in the middle? Let’s start with magic or comedy.
M: Not a bad idea. Bill’s comedy follows Alex’s magic tricks. The audience will watch Alex closely and then listen to Bill.
W: Exactly. Then we can have some singers followed by the pair. Afterward, the dancers will bring a different kind of energy.
M: Let’s end with the band for a strong, exciting finish.
W: Agreed. Would the band want any dancers on stage at the end? That could be so much fun.
M: Good idea. I’ll check with the band, and you ask the dancers okay? To review, we’ll have magic, comedy, singers, the pair, dancers and end with the band. I think we’ve got it.

W: I can’t. My parents are going to an office party, and I promised to take care of my little brother tonight.
M: Could we do it on a video call then?
W: I don’t think that will work. My little brother is too noisy. Are you free tomorrow?
M: Sorry, no... I work on Saturdays.
W: And I’m visiting my grandma on Sunday.
M: Well, no problem. We have until Wednesday to get it done.
W: Why don’t we do the reading separately over the weekend, and get together next week to plan the presentation?
M: That sounds like a good plan.
W: My parents always order pizza on Monday nights. Why don’t you come over and we’ll do it then?
M: Sounds good to me! I love pizza.
W: We’ll call it “brain food”!
M: Ha-ha! Great. Should I bring something... dessert, perhaps?
W: They usually order ice cream too. But perhaps you could bring some juice?
M: Absolutely.

M: I’m applying for a program that starts in early September. W: That sounds better than I expected, but my concern is that after such a break, it could be difficult to return to university life.
M: I understand, mom, but I believe the experience will make me more independent, improve my communication skills and give me a clearer sense of direction.
W: I see. Ethan, still, I want to be sure you’ve considered the challenges. The schedule can be stressful and volunteer work isn’t always easy.
M: True, but I’m ready to face it. I’ll prepare carefully and stay in touch with you.
W: All right, Ethan, if you’re determined, I won’t stop you. Let’s check the budget and timeline this weekend.

M: Attention students, this is your head teacher speaking with an important announcement. The stormy skies have decided to show their anger and the wind is racing around, eager to make things difficult. Because of this wild weather, our school is closing early today.
Remember, this isn't a holiday where you disappear into the sunset or rain. Standards must not drop. At exactly one pm, all students are together in the school hall, where our day will come to an early end.
Year seven students will leave first at 1:15 pm. And then year eight students will leave 15 minutes later. The rest of the year groups will follow one by one. The order will be year seven, year eight, year 9 so on. Year 13 will leave last at 2:45 pm.
Please remember, even though the school may take a break tomorrow to recover, you’ll need to check your accounts for updates. The clouds may make up their minds by morning and we must be ready to respect them and respond. If you are not back in class then your teachers will be on the screen to guide you through the day. Take care and stay dry while the rain beats down on you.

W: Good morning everyone, and welcome to the 2nd Annual Wullaballoo Conference. Before we get underway with today’s programme, let me fill you in as to what’s going on tomorrow.
At 9:00 a. m. right here in the Main Hall, we’ll be hearing a lecture from Dr John Smith about “Computer as Teacher”. An hour later, there will be a presentation of papers by various experts. That will take place in the Garden Room on the ground floor. We’ll be gathering at the west end, the slightly raised area called Level 2.
After all that thinking, talking, and listening, I expect everyone will be a bit weary. So at 11:30, there will be a break for coffee, cookies, and other light refreshments. These will be available at the Refreshment Stand, placed by the door back here in the Main Hall. Also, if you choose to skip the formal lunch, you can buy a packed lunch at the stand for a reasonable price.
I strongly urge you, however, to join us at the formal lunch. That won’t be till one o’clock sharp, so you have time to walk around the town. We’ll be eating at the Sea View Restaurant. The restaurant is located right here in the hotel, on the top floor.
After lunch, we’ll come back downstairs to Level 2 in the Ballroom for the presentation of further papers, which will begin at 2:00 p. m. Please try to be on time. Thank you in advance.

Since the summer, we all have been focusing our efforts on the goal of creating three new products by Chinese New Year. Now, it’s just before Christmas, and we’ve already achieved this goal. So, as this office’s general manager, I’d like to congratulate you all first.
Second, I’ve communicated with the board members over the last few days, and we have decided that everyone will be going home with a holiday gift. I still remember the extra vacation days we got last year. But by the end of today, everyone will receive a significant holiday bonus. It will be twice as much as last year. We all should be proud of our product development and sales figures. This extra payment is given for your excellent performance. But more than the money, my greatest honor was watching everyone work well together as a team.
So, before we all leave for the day, our sales and marketing director will say a few words. Please, put your hands together for her…

I want to tell you about some talks that I am arranging. The plan is to have a different speaker each month on the first Tuesday, since I know a lot of you do other clubs on Mondays and Thursdays. The speaker will tell us about their jobs. These talks will take place outside school hours. I have arranged two talks so far. The first will be by a woman called Ellie Brown. She will be speaking on the second of November. Ellie’s done lots of interesting jobs, including being a teacher. She now works as a travel writer. She is going to tell us about her schooling and about some of the travels she offered to talk about Brazil or Thailand, but we finally agreed that she’d tell us about her most recent trip, which was to Australia. She has got lots of great photos to show you. The second talk by a man named Harry Fowler is not actually going to be on Tuesday, the seventh of December, but on the next day, the eighth. Harry works as a camera operator and has a lot of experience making documentaries. He’s going to tell us about filming wildlife shows. If any of you are keen to know more about his work, you can buy his book Behind the Lens after his talk. You will be able to get it for the discounted price of nine pounds, which is great because it is 15 pounds in the bookshops. He’ll even sign it for you.
