EU Countries Set New Clean Energy Records in 2025
In 2025, the European Union (EU) took an enormous step forward towards a clean power system backed by wind and solar. Here’s the breakdown of electricity generation shares in the EU in 2025.
The EU’s electricity transition reached a new milestone, with wind and solar generating more power than fossil (化石) fuels. A closer look at the data reveals the following highlights:
● 369 TWh. EU solar generation reached a record 369 TWh, 20% higher than that in 2024.
● 47.6%. The weather conditions boosted solar generation, with renewables providing nearly half of EU power (47.6%). Wind remained the second largest EU electricity source at 16.9% of EU power, above gas.
● 30.1%. Wind and solar generated a record 30.1% of EU electricity, higher than fossil power for the first time on record. Wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels in 14 of the 27 EU countries.
● 9.2%. Coal power fell to a new historic low of 9.2%. In 19 EU countries, coal power was at less than 5%.
This milestone moment shows just how quickly things are changing in the EU’s power industry. By investing across the power system to employ the potential of batteries, grids and electrified tech, the EU is trying its best to make use of homegrown renewable power to stabilize prices and ensure energy consumption and security.
1. What is the percentage of power generated from non-renewables in 2025?

Last summer, I made a rather unconventional decision to run a small bookstore in the bustling food market of my neighborhood. My friends cast doubt on the plan, for the market was crowded with noisy vendors (小贩) and filled with pungent food smells. Their concerns proved well-founded on its opening day. Sandwiched between a pork stall and a tofu shop, my bookstore attracted barely any attention. With few customers stepping in, I felt disheartened and began to reflect on what went wrong. Never had I anticipated such a frigid beginning.
It didn’t take me long to figure out where the problem lay. I had stocked my shelves with classic novels and poetry I cherished, yet they failed to meet the needs of local residents. I therefore resolved to make a thorough change. In place of those books, I displayed home-style cookbooks, stories about street food, and food-related picture books for children. I sincerely hoped these new books would win over the locals. I also launched a “Book-for-Veggie Exchange” activity in the store.
The new adjustment turned out to be highly successful. Local people soon took to this creative idea. A young mother came first with a carrot to exchange for a picture book, and before long, my counter was overflowing with fresh vegetables. The tofu vendor’s daughter, who had watched silently for weeks on end, finally stepped forward to borrow a comic. Months later, the bookstore became a warm part of market life, with the scent of books blending gently with the fresh aroma of farm produce.
This experience reshaped my understanding of books. I once believed books could only shine in quiet places, but now I have seen their real value. It lies in connecting with people’s everyday life: books can blend perfectly into daily routines and warm our hearts. They become meaningful and touching when combined with the hustle and bustle, food and laughter of everyday life.
4. What problem did the author face last summer?
A. Doubt among close friends.
B. Strong food smells in the market.
C. Low store traffic in the bookstore.
D. Disturbance from nearby vendors.
5. How did the author attract customers to the bookstore?
A. By selling local vegetables.
B. By offering reader-specific books.
C. By stocking favorite classics.
D. By organizing book-swap activities.
6. What can we learn about the bookstore in paragraph 3?
A. It aimed at a profitable trade in farm produce.
B. It funded the young children in the community.
C. It reflected a harmonious integration into market life.
D. It served as a popular gathering spot in the neighborhood.
7. What has the author learned from opening the bookstore?
A. Better late than never.
B. Books are for life, not for shelves.
C. Think outside the box.
D. Reading connects soul to daily life.

“If your skin is getting older, you are getting older, so be careful,” says Claudia Cavadas at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Could our fight to remove wrinkles help restore youth both inside and out?
As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence (衰老). As time marches on, the mechanisms (机制) for clearing senescent cells out start to decline and they build up in tissues. This is bad news. The build-up of these cells has been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more common in older age.
To support her assumption around wrinkles driving whole-body ageing, Cavadas is planning to test experimental drugs on animal models of aged skin. “The evidence is still fragile, but, in a year, we will have experimental data” she says.
Whether resisting skin ageing resists whole-body ageing will need to be seen. But there is another good reason to slow down skin ageing at least. Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is supposed to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal (康复), sensitivity to touch declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.
How about anti-wrinkle creams? At present, there is limited evidence that they are genuine anti-ageing treatments. We do, however, have one method for preventing skin ageing: sunscreen, which absorbs UV rays before they do damage to the skin. It is never too soon to start. Even though the first visible signs of skin ageing usually don’t appear until our mid-20s, the potential processes are under way much earlier.
Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep” thing, but as a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because we all have skin in this game.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The definition of senescence. B. The causes of skin ageing.
C. The process of cell declining. D. The consequences of skin ageing.
9. What does the underlined word “fragile” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Artificial. B. Considerable.
C. Insubstantial. D. Convincing.
10. Which is a disadvantage of the aged skin?
A. It tends to be sensitive to touches. B. The cut on it recovers quickly.
C. The barrier functions work poorly. D. It stops guarding against diseases.
11. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Anti-wrinkle creams are quite useful.
B. Wrinkle treatment is important to health.
C. Sunscreen may pose potential risk to the skin.
D. Wrinkle treatment is a practice proven skin-deep.
D
A girl who turns up to school dressed head-to-toe in pink will probably pass unnoticed. If a boy does the same, he will inevitably face stares. Even the most non-traditional parent would think twice about exposing their son to that.
Children start paying attention to gender differences much earlier than some parents realize, according to psychologist Christia Brown, “Society emphasizes that gender is important really early in a kid’s life,” she says. “We label it a lot in our language — we use gender as nouns all the time. So we frequently say ‘oh, there’s that girl’ or ‘come on boys, let’s go get in the car.’” Research suggests children’s recognition of gender is more due to adults pointing it out than any inborn awareness of it.
Gendered toys credit certain types of skills and strengths to one gender or the other. So, when a child only plays with toys marketed for their gender, they learn a certain set of skills but do not engage as much in other types of learning. This can lead to imbalanced development in boys and girls as they grow older.
The biggest concern around buying gendered toys is that they can impact how children see themselves. Gendered representation imposes (强加于) society’s ideas of what they should like and do instead of letting them choose for themselves what their interests and hobbies are. This can have influence on what that child decides to study in school and ultimately choose as a career.
Many retailers have made real progress over the last few years, dropping gender labels in stores and online — a new research shows a 70% decrease in the use of online gender navigation options since 2012 — but there’s still work to do to challenge the stereotyped (老一套的) ways that toys are often packaged and promoted.
Researchers hope that one day, toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type, like puzzle toys, dolls or children’s bikes. There would still be dress-up dolls and monster toy trucks in that world, but instead of being just pink or blue, they would come in every color of the rainbow. Toy choices should be based on kids’ personal interests, and not on their gender.
12. What does Christia Brown say about gender differences?
A. They are probably unnoticed. B. They are socially constructed.
C. They are biologically determined. D. They are universally acknowledged.
13. What aspects of children are negatively affected by gendered toys?
A. Their academic performance. B. Their interpersonal relationship.
C. Their behaviours and attitudes. D. Their physical strength and fitness.
14. What should we put efforts to change?
A. How the toys are marketed. B. Where the toys are sold.
C. When the toys are rolled out. D. Who the toys are targeted at.
15. What do the researchers expect of future toys?
A. They should be colourful. B. They should be gender-neutral.
C. They should cater to kids’ tastes. D. They should cover wider categories.

Renny was an eleven-year-old girl who liked putting things off. She often delayed her school assignments. Her weekends were usually filled with dreams of hanging out with friends, or staying at her grandparents’ house, where she would enjoy herself and play freely with some of her friends.
One weekend, Renny planned to go to her grandparents’ place. When her mother asked if she had any schoolwork to complete, Renny shook her head and said no, hiding the fact that she had a math assignment due soon. Her mother agreed to drop her off, reminding her to practice her math skills. Renny promised she would study later, but the weekend passed quickly with fun and relaxation.
By the time Monday arrived, she had completely forgotten about the assignment. Walking into the classroom, panic swept over her. When her teacher asked for the assignment, Renny lied that she had forgotten it at home. The teacher simply told her to bring it the next day. Relieved, Renny thought the small lie had solved everything. But when the next day came, she still had not done the work. She made up another excuse, saying her cousin had spilled ink on it. The teacher raised an eyebrow doubtfully, so Renny quickly invented a story about a visiting cousin. Her friend asked how long the cousin was staying, and Renny answered, “Until Saturday,” adding another layer to her lie.
That evening, her mother mentioned that the teacher had called about the missing assignment. Renny insisted she had already submitted it, claiming the teacher must have forgotten. The lies began to grow, each one demanding another to hold them up. Her friend later questioned her about the cousin, and Renny struggled to keep the story straight, nervously saying he had left early.
Renny started to feel trapped. At home, she sensed doubt in her mother’s voice. At school, her teacher’s gaze seemed sharper, and her friend grew distant. The small lie had grown into a web she could not escape.

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论了皮肤老化与全身老化的关系,以及科学家对此的研究和探索,同时涉及了抗衰老的方法和防晒的重要性。
【8题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第二段第一句“As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence(衰老) .(随着皮肤老化,越来越多的细胞进入一种无活力的状态,这种状态被称为衰老)”描述了随着皮肤老化,细胞进入衰老状态;接着提到“As time marches on, the mechanisms (机制) for clearing senescent cells out start to decline and they build up in tissues.(随着时间的推移,清除衰老细胞的机制开始衰退,衰老细胞在组织中不断积聚)”即清除衰老细胞的机制衰退,衰老细胞在组织中积聚;最后一句“The build-up of these cells has been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more common in older age.(已经证实,这些细胞的积聚是一些老年常见病症的直接诱因)”表明这些细胞的积聚是老年常见病症的直接诱因。因此第二段主要讲述了皮肤老化的后果。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句““The evidence is still fragile, but, in a year, we will have experimental data” she says.(她说:“目前的证据还fragile,但一年后,我们将获得实验数据。”)”中的but可知,后面说“一年后我们将有实验数据”,说明目前证据还不充分。选项C“Insubstantial(不充实的;无实质内容的;不牢固的)”符合目前证据还不够有力,还比较薄弱的意思。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is supposed to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal (康复), sensitivity to touch declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.(一位整形外科医生说,衰老的皮肤在几乎所有它应有的功能方面都比年轻皮肤差。皮肤的屏障功能减弱,伤口愈合速度变慢,对触摸的敏感度下降,抵御疾病的能力也变弱了)”可知,老年皮肤的屏障功能会减弱,即其屏障功能较差。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep” thing, but as a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because we all have skin in this game.(显然,皱纹治疗不应再被视为一件“表面”的事情,而应被视为保持生理年轻和健康的重要部分。每个人都应该重视这一点,因为在这场与衰老的对抗中,我们都拥有皮肤)”可知,皱纹治疗不应只被看作是表面的事情,而是保持生理年轻和健康的重要部分。由此推知,皱纹治疗对健康很重要。故选B。
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讲述了性别化玩具对儿童发展的负面影响及未来玩具应去性别化的期望。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Research suggests children’s recognition of gender is more due to adults pointing it out than any inborn awareness of it.(研究表明,孩子对性别的认知更多源于成年人的刻意强调,而非天生就有这种意识)”可知,Christia Brown认为性别差异是社会构建的。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The biggest concern around buying gendered toys is that they can impact how children see themselves. Gendered representation imposes (强加于) society’s ideas of what they should like and do instead of letting them choose for themselves what their interests and hobbies are. This can have influence on what that child decides to study in school and ultimately choose as a career.(购买性别化玩具最大的担忧是,它们会影响孩子对自己的看法。性别化的表现强加了社会对他们应该喜欢和做什么的看法,而不是让他们自己选择自己的兴趣爱好。这可能会影响孩子在学校选择学习的内容,并最终影响他们选择的职业)”可知,性别化玩具对孩子的行为和态度产生负面影响。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“but there’s still work to do to challenge the stereotyped (老一套的) ways that toys are often packaged and promoted.(但是,要挑战玩具通常的包装和推广方式中的刻板印象,仍有许多工作要做)”可知,我们应该努力改变玩具的营销方式。故选A。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Researchers hope that one day, toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type, like puzzle toys, dolls or children’s bikes.(研究人员希望有一天,玩具不再按性别分类,而是按类型分类,比如拼图玩具、娃娃或儿童自行车)”可知,研究人员期望未来的玩具应该是性别中立的。故选B。

【答案】One possible version:
Then one day, the truth came out. Her teacher called Renny’s mother, and together they sat down with her after school. At first, Renny’s heart raced with panic, and she tried to stick to her story. But when her mother looked at her with disappointment and her teacher waited patiently, her defense crumbled. Tears welled up in her eyes as she told them everything. Instead of anger, her teacher said gently, “Lies only make things worse. The truth, however hard, sets you free.” Her mother added, “We all make mistakes, but what matters is how we fix them.” Renny nodded, beginning to understand.
After admitting everything, Renny felt a mix of shame and relief. That evening, she finished her math assignment honestly, asking for help when she needed it. The next day, she stood before her class and said, “I’m terribly sorry that I have lied about the assignment.” A brief silence followed, and then her teacher smiled and said, “Truth always deserves respect.” Her friend gave her a small nod. From that day on, Renny learned that honesty, though sometimes difficult, never traps you the way lies do. She realized that facing a problem bravely was far better than hiding behind excuses, and she promised herself to choose truth from then on.
