Learning new languages can be empowering, opening doors to connect with people from different cultures. Recently, a man practicing Chinese gained widespread attention after visiting a local Lanzhou noodle restaurant and speaking the language in a truly memorable way. Canadian resident Cali Lopez shared a video of his interaction with a Chinese waitress and their authentic and curious exchange quickly won praise online.
The incident occurred in Saskatoon, one of Canada's largest cities, with a growing Chinese community. Cali appeared anxious and nervous at the Lanzhou noodle restaurant before a waitress approached him. Greeting her in her native language, he nearly left her in shock.
With a smile, Cali then politely asked the waitress if he could practice his Chinese and began ordering in her language, asking questions about the menu. He noticed a dish that caught his interest and asked in Chinese, “Is this sour pickle (泡菜) soup hot?” The waitress replied, “Yes, a little bit spicy.” Cali, who works as an English teacher, was fine with mild spice, replying,“Oh, I just want to order one.” When she asked about his other food preferences, he shared his desire for a dish with rice noodles.
The waitress then listed the restaurant's six types of noodles, including three round and three flat varieties. Cali appeared to struggle a bit while discussing the types of noodles in Chinese, requesting the waitress to point to the menu and explain each dish's preparation to help him order. After some thought, he chose the thinnest of the round noodles.
Curious about his language skills,Cali then asked,“Can you understand me?” and waited eagerly for her response. The waitress confirmed she could, leaving Cali visibly moved.
The one-minute video of this genuine and heartfelt exchange has received widespread praise on social media for recording a real, spontaneous (自发的) moment without any forced emotion.
4. How did the waitress feel at Cali's greeting in Chinese?
A. Surprised. B. Confused. C. Annoyed. D. Uninterested.
5. What may have impressed the audience most in Cali's video?
A. The Chinese food. B. The Chinese language.
C. His genuine use of Chinese. D. His knowledge of Chinese noodles.
6. What can we learn from Cali's conversation with the waitress?
A. He was eager to practice Chinese. B. He struggled with mild spicy food.
C. He turned down her offer of help. D. He found it effortless to discuss the menu.
7. What does the article mainly talk about?
A. Language barriers of dining out. B. The challenges of learning Chinese.
C. A heartwarming cultural exchange. D. The importance of being communicative.
C
People send messages every day on social media. These online conversations can have a huge impact and shape how societies make decisions. But there is a growing problem. Sometimes people don’t listen to each other and can say really hurtful things. Would it be better if there were an advisor in online talks? We tried to use artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) to carry out this task.
So, we did an online experiment with pairs of people discussing a challenging topic. In the first group, one participant (参与者) in each pair had an AI helper. The AI tried to make sure the discussion was polite and respectful. It didn’t change the participant’s point of view, though! The participant could accept or refuse the suggestions or completely edit the message an AI helper offers. In the control group, the people had a conversation on the same topic but neither of the participants had an AI helper. After the discussions ended, the pairs shared their thoughts on how good the conversation was.
In our study, the participants accepted the AI’s suggestions two thirds of the time. When they used the AI’s suggestions, the messages became more positive and polite. Participants whose partners used the AI reported feeling better about the conversation. They were more willing to understand and respect each other, even if they still disagreed. The people who used the AI themselves didn’t report a huge change in how they felt about the conversation. However, they were more willing to respect the opinions of others!
The results of our study show that AI did a good job of making online discussions polite. But you don’t need a reminder to be respectful. Even in the vast digital world, each conversation matters. Your choice to be kind and respectful can make a big difference. It can promote a culture of healthy discussion and understanding. This is also true for real-life conversations.
8. What do the underlined words “this task” in paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. Starting talks. B. Guiding conversations.
C. Changing views. D. Sending messages.
9. What do we learn about participants with AI helpers?
A. They responded to AI politely. B. They changed views as AI suggested.
C. They tended to respect others’ views. D. They experienced mixed feelings.
10. What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The effectiveness of AI in online discussions. B. The significance of respectful communication.
C. The importance of reminders in conversations. D. The balance between technologies and choices.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Can Al remove mean posts? B. Can AI make online talks kinder?
C. How to respect different opinions? D. How to reach an agreement online?
D
To discuss bow to improve the game of football, President Roosevelt called coaches and athletic advisers from Yale University, Princeton University and Harvard University to White House.
The changes caused by the President were the first steps in a long line of reforms to make American football safer.
At that time, football was very dangerous and violent. In 1904 alone, at least 18 people died and more than 150 were injured because of playing football. According to The Washington Post, at least 45 football players died from 1900 to October 1905.
Roosevelt liked football and thought being violent wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But his son was injured while playing as a freshman at Harvard, bleeding badly from a cut over his eye, and the nation was shocked at the number of young men who died or were seriously injured in playing the game. People were especially shaken by the death of Union College player Harold Moore, who died after being kicked on the head.
A movement rose up to ban the sport, which was led by the president of Harvard and a number of other well-known people. They thought football had no place in civilized society and wanted to throw it away. Roosevelt wanted to reform the game and complained in a letter that Eliot wanted to kill it.
Roosevelt again called Harvard, Yale and other football coaches and officials to the White House with a view to a taking away its dangerous features. A committee was formed after the 1905 season to look at changing the rules.
The rules were changed for the 1906 season, but there were still some doubts. The head coach at Swarthmore College wrote a series of articles called How to Play Football. And it took several years for the rules to be accepted.
12. How does the author show the violence of football?
A. By providing some data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By telling personal experiences D. By showing research findings.
13. What was Roosevelt's attitude towards football?
A. He hoped it would disappear from the world.
B. He took pleasure in it although it was violent.
C. He thought football was a bad and violent sport.
D. He didn't like it at all because of his son's injury.
14. Why did Roosevelt call the coaches to the White House?
A. Because of the support from athletes. B. Because of Harold Moore's death.
C. Because of the public's angry feelings. D. Because of the anti-football movement.
15. What do we know about the new rules made in 1905?
A. Players were required to wear helmets. B. People accepted them slowly.
C. Elite played an important role in making them. D. Players found football was much easier to play.

I used to think the whole purpose of life was seeking happiness. Everyone said the path to happiness was success, so I searched for that ideal job, that perfect boyfriend, and that beautiful apartment. ____16____ Eventually, I decided to go to graduate school for positive psychology (心理) to learn what truly makes people happy.
And what’s the difference between being happy and having meaning in life? Many psychologists define happiness as a state of comfort and ease, feeling good at the moment. ____17____ The famous psychologist Martin Seligman says meaning comes from belonging to and serving something beyond yourself and from developing the best within you. There are four pillars (支柱) of a meaningful life.
The first pillar is belonging. Belonging comes from being in relationships where you’re valued for who you are by nature and where you value others as well. ____18____
For others, the key to meaning is the second pillar: purpose. Finding your purpose is not the same thing as finding the job that makes you happy. ____19____ For example, a hospital nurse told me her purpose is helping sick people become healthy again.
The third pillar of meaning is about stepping beyond yourself, but in a completely different way: transcendence (卓越). It is a state where you feel connected to a higher reality, and your sense of self fades away.
The fourth pillar is storytelling, the story you tell yourself about yourself. It helps you understand how you became you.
____20____ But when life is really good and when things are really bad, having meaning gives you something to hold on to. That’s the power of meaning.
A. Meaning, though, is deeper.
B. Happiness comes and goes.
C. The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others.
D. It’s happiness that our culture attaches great importance to.
E. But instead of ever feeling happy, I felt anxious and aimless.
F. Purpose motivates individuals to develop and achieve success.
G. For many people, belonging is the most essential source of meaning.

第二节 续写作文 (满分15分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-I-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为80个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Canadian resident Cali Lopez shared a video of his interaction with a Chinese waitress and their authentic and curious exchange quickly won praise online.
The incident occurred in Saskatoon, one of Canada's largest cities, with a growing Chinese community. Cali appeared anxious and nervous at the Lanzhou noodle restaurant before a waitress approached him. Greeting her in her native language, he nearly left her in shock.

To discuss bow to improve the game of football, President Roosevelt called coaches and athletic advisers from Yale University, Princeton University and Harvard University to White House.
