Scientists in Germany have discovered a soil bacterium which can break down polyurethane, a plastic that pollutes landfills and oceans. The bacterium, named Pseudomonas putida, was found in a plastic-waste-rich area, which offers a hope for addressing the global plastic crisis.
Polyurethane is widely used in everyday items like furniture, packaging and etc. In 2015 alone, it accounted for 3.5 million tons of Europe’s plastic waste. Recycling this material is challenging because it does not melt when heated, requiring extreme energy consumption. As a result, most polyurethane products are dumped into landfills, where they slowly break down and release poisonous chemicals into the soil and air.
The breakthrough lies in the bacterium’s ability to produce enzymes (酶) that naturally break down polyurethane. Published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, the study highlights how these enzymes weaken the plastic’s structure, allowing it to break down in the environment. Dr. Hermann Heipieper, a co-author of the study, described the discovery as “an important step” toward reusing plastics previously considered non-recyclable.
The research is part of a European Union program that seeks to find useful microorganisms. The goal is to identify living things that can help turn oil-based plastics into substances (物质) that can be broken down biologically. Similar experiments have been carried out in the past. In 2011, Yale University students discovered a fungus (真菌) that could feed on polyurethane plastic even in a place without air, like at the bottom of a landfill. Since then, scientists around the world have identified other kinds of fungi that can break down polyurethane.
While promising, scientists warn against rushing to use the bacteria in ecosystems. Environmental expert Douglas Rader advises thorough research on how these tiny helpers affect sea creatures. With over 8 million tons of plastic entering oceans every year, testing it carefully and cautiously is very necessary. As half of global plastic production is single-use, solutions like this bacteria could be a game-changer for our fight against pollution — if handled responsibly.
8. Why is recycling polyurethane particularly challenging?
A. It requires least energy to process. B. It cannot be melted at high temperatures.
C. It is rarely used in everyday products. D. It releases poisonous chemicals when melted.
9. The term “breakthrough” refers to the bacterium’s ability to______.
A. survive in oxygen-free environments B. replace fungi in breaking down polyurethane
C. change plastics into reusable materials D. produce enzymes breaking down polyurethane
10. What is important before applying the bacterium widely?
A. Reducing global plastic production by half.
B. Studying its potential impact on sea creatures.
C. Increasing the use of single-use plastics temporarily.
D. Developing stronger enzymes through genetic engineering.
11. What is the most appropriate title for the article?
A. The Challenges of Recycling Polyurethane in Europe
B. A Soil Bacterium Offers Hope in Handling Plastic Pollution
C. Scientists Warn Against Using Bacteria to Clean Oceans
D. EU Program Advances Research on Plastic-Eating Bacterium

D
Taking advantage of people’s appetite for trendy clothes, fast fashion has grown rapidly in recent years. It refers to cheaply made clothing that allows consumers to buy a stylish outfit at an affordable price. Today, the fast fashion industry is valued at $150.82 billion (about 1,094 billion yuan) — up 10.74 percent from 2024 — and is expected to reach $291.1 billion by 2032, according to UniformMarket.
However, this growth comes with serious environmental consequences, one of which is carbon emissions. To keep costs low, the fast fashion industry uses synthetic (合成的) materials like polyester (聚酯纤维) in the largescale production of clothing. Polyester can create two to three times more carbon emissions than cotton, leading to serious air pollution. What’s worse, the rapid changes in fashion trends have created a “throwaway” culture that results in huge amounts of textile waste. When synthetic materials end up in landfills, they stay there for hundreds of years, causing soil damage and polluting groundwater.
In addition to using cheap but harmful materials, fast fashion also reduces costs by taking advantage of its workers. According to The George Washington University, the fast fashion industry employs around 75 million factory workers worldwide, but less than 2 percent earn a living wage. These factors together make fast fashion unsustainable, as it leads to both environmental harm and social injustice.
The need to solve these problems has made sustainable fashion more important than ever. First introduced in the 1990s, this idea refers to clothing that is made ethically (符合道德规范地) and is environmentally friendly. It looks at the whole life of the product, including how it is made, used and thrown away.
“There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness,” said Indian social activist Mahatma Gandhi. His words remind us of the hidden costs behind the fast fashion industry. True beauty lies in clothing that is made ethically, without harming people or the planet.
12. What may the figures used in paragraph 1 highlight?
A. The popularity of fashionable clothes. B. The economic benefits of fast fashion.
C. The environmental influence of fast fashion. D. The booming development of fast fashion industry.
13. Which of the following makes fast fashion unsustainable?
A. The diverse dressing styles of people. B. The destruction of soil caused by wastes.
C. The unreasonable use of cotton materials. D. The high costs of employing workers worldwide.
14. What can we know about sustainable fashion?
A. It was not proposed until a decade ago.
B. It aims to promote the economic development.
C. It emphasizes the complete process of clothes production.
D. It mainly focuses on the environmental aspect of clothing industry.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Cheap Clothes, High Risks B. Online Shopping, Fashion Trends
C. Recycling Solves Fashion Waste Crisis D. Fast Fashion Fuels Global Economic Growth
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

Humans have evolved to spend long periods doing physical exercise. ___16___ The complexity of the human brain is to blame.
Evolving an ability doesn’t automatically mean we’ll want to use it. While physical exercise isn’t that bad, it’s still typically unpleasant. ___17___ It calculates the effort required for actions and tends to stop us from misusing vital resources on fruitless efforts, like walking over 30 km for a handful of berries.
The thing is, regular exercise to get “in shape” needs constant and considerable effort. ___18___ So, your brain has a tendency to ask this question, “Is it worth it?” This particular feature also means we typically prefer things which offer minimum effort for maximum reward.
Thankfully, the human brain is a complex organ. It isn’t ruled by its more primitive drives. While many species’ thought processes are limited to “Food, eat it!”, “Danger, run!”, “Pain, avoid!”, we’ve evolved beyond that. ___19___ We can imagine a desirable future scenario (情况), figure out how we’d achieve it, and do just that. Or at least work toward it. This directly impacts how our brain processes motivation and willpower. We can recognize that rejecting a reward now can lead to a greater reward later, and act accordingly.
As far as your brain is concerned, there are processes that discourage exercise, and processes that encourage it. ___20___
A. So how does the brain process motivation?
B. But why doesn’t everyone enjoy exercising?
C. Our brains can form long-term goals and ambitions.
D. It is for gradual progress and uncertain rewards.
E. The human brain is highly sensitive to wasted effort.
F. Most people have the habit of doing physical exercise.
G. Ideally, you’ll end up putting more weight on the latter than the former.
【答案】16. B 17. E 18. D 19. C 20. G

第二节 微写作 (满分15分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Craig watched as his older sister Riley and friend Liz skated on the lake. When the game was over, Craig asked Riley what skating felt like.
“When I go really fast, I feel like I’m flying,” she said.
That’s silly, thought Craig. Flying is something birds do in the air, not something people do on ice Skates. Then he watched Riley go back out on the ice. She skated around and around the edge of the lake with increasing speed and soon she was going so fast that her arms looked like wings and her scarf like a long tail. Maybe skating really was like flying.
When Riley sat down to take her skates off, Craig said, “I wish I could fly.”
Riley didn’t say anything, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.
The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed (填塞) newspaper in them, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so that he could walk to the lake.
Riley and Liz went with him. They carried a wooden chair. When they got to the lake. Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice. Then she put his hands on the back of the chair.
“Hang on to this and you won’t fall,” said Riley. “Just push it along in front of you, OK?”
Craig smiled. “OK.” He held on to the chair and kept himself balanced. Riley and Liz cheered him on as he started to move forward. Craig tried to skate like his sister but when he let go of the chair, he just fell. So he grabbed on to the chair again and moved on little by little. This wasn’t like flying at all. It was like being a snail (蜗牛).
“How’s it going?” Riley finally asked. Craig looked upset. “What’s wrong?” Riley asked.
注意:
1.续写词数应为80-100词;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I wanted to skate like you,” Craig said, “I wanted to fly”.

The edges of his skates just touched the ice. The girls went faster and faster, and so did he. When he looked down, his skate blades looked like silver smoke. His hat nearly blew off. “I’m flying!” he yelled, and the words blew away in the wind like a bird’s happy song.

注意:
1.续写词数应为80-100词;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I wanted to skate like you,” Craig said, “I wanted to fly”.
