B For the first three months of my year abroad in Seville, Spain, I lived in a new flat with a Spanish boy and two French boys. We spoke to one another in Spanish. I remember my first weekend there. My new flatmates organised a barbeque (烧烤), inviting many Spanish people. Everyone was talking in Spanish. I had thought it a good chance to practice my Spanish; however, they spoke too fast. At the barbeque, I faced new challenges and new language barriers (障碍). Before coming to Seville, I had been studying Spanish for two years, but you can never be sure of how you speak a foreign language until you actually go to a country where that language is spoken. In Seville, I made many mistakes when I spoke in Spanish. Sometimes, I would realize that I didn’t actually know how to say what I wanted to say. Other times, I would try to simplify what I wanted to say — I knew what I meant in English and could more or less say it in Spanish. But it’s not so easy to translate successfully from one language to another. So, I often found it difficult to communicate. Now, my Spanish flatmate could speak much faster and more naturally with us. I think that living with a native speaker and being surrounded (围绕) by the language from morning till night really helped me to improve so much so that when we organised a second barbeque, I could communicate with native Spanish speakers fluently. 4. What happened to the author at the first barbeque his flatmates organised? A. He made a lot of new friends. B. He was asked to speak English. C. He failed to understand the Spanish people. D. He learned a lot about Spanish food culture. 5. What difficulty did the author mention in paragraph 3? A. He failed in translation tests. B. He experienced culture shock. C. He couldn’t find a partner to practice Spanish with. D. He couldn’t find the right words to express himself. 6. How did the author feel at the second barbeque? A. Confident. B. Thankful. C. Concerned. D. Honoured. 7. What does the author tell us through the text? A. Why he went to Seville. B. The language barriers he met. C. How he got on with his flatmates. D. The importance of learning Spanish. C If you’re someone who has been worrying about the rise of the robots—hold on there just a second, and let them help you impress your friends with some newfound skills in a foreign language. Using artificial intelligence (AI) to help us learn and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AI. But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to take advantage of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren’t replacing teachers—they’re making their lives easier. One of the things that stops some of us from practicing speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help—chatbots don’t judge you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may erase that fear of failure or shyness. The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working individually, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. The AI can also provide feedback (反馈) in seconds—gone are the days of waiting a week for work to be graded. Past online language tools and games were able to tell you when you were wrong, but they weren’t always able to explain why. Now, not only has that changed, but the explanations are detailed and immediate. But this is not to underestimate the role of the teacher, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and shortcomings of their students and personalize their teaching. So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new! 8. What is the main idea of the article? A. The dangers of Al-robots. B. The history of online language tools. C. The benefits of AI in language learning. D. The role of teachers in the modern classroom. 9. Why might someone prefer communicating with a bot? A. Because bots grade work faster. B. Because bots provide textbooks. C. Because bots are more knowledgeable. D. Because bots may remove the fear of failure or shyness. 10. What is the benefit of AI producing personalized textbooks? A. It saves time for teachers. B. It reduces the cost of education. C. It meets individual students’ needs. D. It provides detailed lesson plans. 11. What word might replace the underlined word “shortcoming” in paragraph 4? A. weakness. B. awareness. C. witness. D. darkness. D Does adversity (逆境) warm hearts or harden them? Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set out to explore the relationship between adversity and compassion (同情). We conducted a study online and reached more than 200 people from all walks of life. After asking them about the hardships they faced and how often they experienced compassion, we offered them the chance to donate some of the money they were about to be paid for taking part in the study to help people in need. The result showed that those who had faced serious adversities in life feel more compassion for suffering people. And as a result, they donated more money. Now, if experiencing any type of hardship can make a person more compassionate, you might assume that the compassion would be reached when someone has experienced the exact misfortune that another person is facing. Interestingly, this turns out to be dead wrong. In an article recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Kellogg School of Management professor Loran Nordgren and his team found that the human mind refuses to work as usual when it comes to remembering its own past hardships: it regularly makes them appear to be less painful than they actually were. Therefore, recalling a bad experience in your own past may make you underestimate (低估) the difficulty of others’ challenges. You overcame it, you think; so should he. The result? You lack compassion. Our findings, taken together with those of Professor Nordgren and his team, are that living through hardships doesn’t either warm hearts or harden them; it does both. Knowing suffering in life usually enhances the compassion we feel for others, except when the suffering involves specific painful events that we know all too well. 12. Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s study? A. Those attending it had to pay for it. B. Those attending it were asked questions only. C. It is meant to encourage people to help those in need. D. It tries to reveal the relationship between adversity and compassion. 13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. People’s compassion for suffering people. B. People’s understanding of others’ misfortune. C. The findings of Loran Nordgren and his team. D. The assumption that shared misfortune may lead to compassion. 14. What did Professor Nordgren and his team find? A. Hardships make people lost in sad memories. B. Hardships lead to people’s lack of compassion. C. People tend to remember their hardships easily. D. People suffering from adversity are easy to break down. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The Hidden Power of Compassion B. Surprising link of Adversity and Compassion C. Compassion: A Gift from Personal Adversity D. Adversity: A Pathway to Deeper Compassion In Russia, guests almost receive a warm welcome. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段中“Everyone was talking in Spanish. I had thought it a good chance to practice my Spanish; however, they spoke too fast. At the barbeque, I faced new challenges and new language barriers (障碍).(每个人都在用西班牙语交谈。我原以为这是一个练习西班牙语的好机会;然而,他们说得太快了。在烧烤聚会上,我遇到了新的挑战和新的语言障碍)”可知,在室友组织的第一次烧烤聚会上作者听不懂西班牙人的话。故选C项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Sometimes, I would realize that I didn’t actually know how to say what I wanted to say. Other times, I would try to simplify what I wanted to say — I knew what I meant in English and could more or less say it in Spanish.(有时候,我会意识到我实际上不知道如何说我想说的话。其他时候,我会尽量简化我想说的话——我知道我的英语意思,或多或少会用西班牙语表达出来)”可知,作者遇到的困难是找不到合适的词语来表达自己。故选D项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“when we organised a second barbeque, I could communicate with native Spanish speakers fluently.(当我们组织第二次烧烤时,我可以流利地与西班牙语母语者交流)”可推知,在第二次烧烤时作者可以流利地与西班牙语母语者交流,感到非常自信。故选A项。 C If you’re someone who has been worrying about the rise of the robots—hold on there just a second, and let them help you impress your friends with some newfound skills in a foreign language. A. weakness. B. awareness. C. witness. D. darkness. C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据文章第一段“Using articial itelligence (AI) to help us leam and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AL.(使用人工智能(AI)来帮助我们学习和提高这些技能并不是什么新鲜事,我们每天使用的一些在线语言工具就是由人工智能驱动的。)”以及最后一段“So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new!(所以,如果你想用你完美的演讲给你的朋友留下深刻印象,不要害怕AI。只要认为它是一个对老师和语言学习者都有用的工具,它会给你更多的时间和空间来享受学习一些新的东西!)”以及其他段落的内容可知,本文主要围绕着人工智能在语言学习中带给人们的好处来展开,因此C项The benefits of AI in language learning. 根据文章第二段“One of the things that stops some of us from practicing speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. Al can nelp—chatbots don’t judge you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may erase that fear of failure or shyness.(阻止我们中的一些人练习说一种新的语言的原因之一是缺乏自信。聊天机器人不会评判你。当然,老师也不知道,但对一些人来说,与机器人交流可能会消除对失败或害羞的恐惧。)”可知,有人更喜欢和机器人交流是因为机器人可以消除对失败的恐惧或害羞。故选D项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working individually, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. (虽然聊天机器人对于单独工作的学习者非常有用,但教师也可以提供课程材料,并要求智能系统为学生群体制作个性化的教科书。)” 可知,人工智能制作个性化教科书的好处是它可以满足学生的个性化需求。故选C项。 【11题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词之前“But this is not to underestimate the role of the teacher, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and(但这并不是要低估了教师的角色,他可以利用技术来帮助更多了解学生的优势和)”以及划线词之后“of their students and personalize their teaching.(并个性化他们的教学。)” 故选A项。 D Does adversity (逆境) warm hearts or harden them? 14 What did Professor Nordgren and his team find? Adversity: A Pathway to Deeper Compassion 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. Interestingly, this turns out to be dead wrong.(现在,如果经历任何类型的困难都能让一个人更有同情心,你可能会认为,当一个人经历了另一个人所面临的确切不幸时,就会有同情心。 可知,this指代的是上文提到的“the compassion would be reached when someone has experienced the exact misfortune that another person is facing”这一观点,即共同的不幸可能会使人产生同情这种观点。 根据第四段中的“Therefore, recalling a bad experience in your own past may make you underestimate (低估) the difficulty of others’ challenges. You overcame it, you think; so should he. The result? 根据第一段中的“Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set out to explore the relationship between adversity and compassion (同情).(最近,我和我的研究生丹尼尔开始探索逆境和同情之间的关系。)” In Russia, guests almost receive a warm welcome.
