On March 29, 2026, a very exciting thing happened. A Chinese motorcycle won a world-class race in Portugal (葡萄牙). It was the first time for a Chinese brand to win such a big race.
Behind this great success is a 39-year-old man named Zhang Xue. He was born in a poor village in Hunan. He finished middle school at 16 and started working in a small repair shop. His hands were always dirty with black oil, but he had a big dream—to make the best Chinese motorcycle.
When he was 19, he rode an old motorcycle in heavy rain for more than 100 kilometers, just to show his skills to a TV reporter. People laughed at him, but he never gave up.
In 2024, Zhang started his own company in Chongqing. He put all his money into making a powerful engine (发动机). Many people said a village boy could never do it. Zhang didn’t say anything. He just worked hard with his team day and night.
In March 2026, his dream came true. Watching his motorcycle win the race, Zhang cried with joy. Many people wanted to give him money to grow his business, but Zhang said no to most of them. “I don’t care about getting rich quickly. I just want to focus on my work,” he said.
Zhang also made a special rule. New riders with less than one year of experience cannot buy his fast motorcycles. “This is not a toy. It needs proper skills,” he said.
Zhang Xue’s story tells us that an ordinary person can achieve great success through hard work and true love for what he does.

A. They are expensive.
B. They are very cheap.
C. They are difficult to ride well.
D. They are only for racers with many years of experience.
35. What does Zhang Xue’s story mainly tell us?
A. Starting a company is the only way to succeed.
B. People should never leave school at a young age.
C. It is easy to win a world-class race if you work hard.

Have you seen a small forest in your city? Since 2024, many cities in China have built “pocket forests”. These are small forests built on empty corners of cities, such as unused land; street corners, and empty spaces in communities. They have become very popular on social media.
What is a pocket forest?
A pocket forest is usually a small green area of 50 to 200 square meters. Most trees are native tree species (树种). These trees are easy to grow and care for. Besides trees, the forest also includes flowers and grass. In this way, a rich green environment is created. Many pocket forests have wooden benches (长椅) and small paths. They allow people to rest, walk or read there.
Why are pocket forests helpful?
First, they improve air quality. A 100-square-meter pocket forest can take in 500 kilograms of CO2 a year. Second, they make the city cooler. In summer, a pocket forest can lower the temperature around it by 2-3°C. Third, they make people happy. A grandmother from Beijing said, “There used to be a messy vacant (闲置的) lot (一块地) downstairs. Now it’s a beautiful pocket forest.”
Students join in
Many middle school students also take part in building and taking care of pocket forests. They join volunteer activities to plant trees; water plants and pick up rubbish. Li Ming, a 15-year-old student, said, “It is meaningful to plant trees. I have learned about many native plants and understood the importance of environmental protection.”
By the end of April 2026, more than 1,200 pocket forests had been built in 50 cities across the country. Urban planners (城市规划师) say pocket forests are a smart way to use limited city space. They not only make the city beautiful but also help protect the environment.
36. Where are pocket forests usually built?
A. Inside large city parks. B. On empty corners of cities.
C. On the top of tall buildings. D. In the center of busy roads.
37. What can people do in a pocket forest?
A. Swim and run. B. Play football. C. Rest and read. D. Plant vegetables.
38. Which of the following are the benefits of pocket forests?
①They make people happy. ②They improve air quality. ③They make the city cooler. ④They provide wood for building.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
39. What can we learn from this text?
A. Pocket forests only have trees and no flowers or grass.
B. Many trees in pocket forests are not native tree species.
C. Students help plant trees, water the plants, and pick up rubbish.
D. Pocket forests are usually larger than 1,000 square metres.

31. What did Zhang Xue do first after finishing middle school?
A. He opened his own company. B. He worked in a small repair shop.

33. What does the underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A. Starting a company. B. Working day and night.
C. Winning a world-class race. D. Making a powerful engine.

D. An ordinary person can succeed through hard work and love for his work.
