And for me, libraries were a place to get my favourite books. I got older and did the things most people did. Then one spring and summer my life changed. I lost my wife and retired. I realized that I had more time on my hands than I had things to do. So I took a volunteer job at an organization that sent food, clothes and perhaps some hope to unlucky members of our community. It was, and remains, an excellent organization, but I didn’t feel a connection between it and me. I left. At the same time, I discovered that I was about to lose touch with an old, dear friend. Traditional methods of communication were out of the question. I had only a vague (模糊的) idea of what an email was, and I had no computer. As you might well guess, I had no warm feelings about computers. I had to choose: I could keep the attitude, or keep the friend. No-brainer. My little library in Camp Verde, Arizona was beginning a computer class designed for beginners. I learned how to email. Having no computer, I had to drive to the library most days to do my emailing. Over a period of time I attracted the attention of Alice, a worker at the library. She felt the library would be the perfect place for me to volunteer. She had a point. I was already there a lot and I enjoyed the people I came in contact with. So I volunteered. Over the next couple of years, I learned much more about computers in general and finally came to the point where I was actually able to help others with some computer problems. Imagine that! 24. What was the author’s childhood like? A. He often read books. B. He seldom went to libraries. C. He was born in a rich family. D. He liked doing things few children did. 25. What did the author think of his first volunteer job? A. He found it enjoyable. B. He learned a lot from it. C. He wasn’t interested in it. D. He didn’t think it was worth doing. 26. Why did the author decide to learn computer skills? A. To kill time after retirement. B. To use the library in a smarter way. C. To keep in touch with an old friend. D. To satisfy his interest in the Internet. 27. How does the writer develop the passage? A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples. C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of space. C Most of us are afraid to fail. Our fear of failure isn’t surprising. From an early age, we’re surrounded by people who value perfection. Parents tell us to bring home A’s. Coaches teach us to go for the gold, not the silver or bronze. And on social media, people share only the coolest parts of their lives. Usually, they keep their struggles to themselves. What’s so bad about being afraid to fail? It might seem like a “win at everything” attitude would push you to succeed. In reality, it can seriously hold you back. For example, many people get one bad grade on an algebra (代数) test and decide they’ re not smart enough for math. According to experts, that’s the wrong way to think. They say failing is good for you. It teaches you to stick with a task even when it gets hard. The ability to do this is called grit(毅力). To people with grit, failure is not a reason to give up, but a chance to improve. There’s one place where failure is surely valued: technology companies. To the leaders of these companies, a failed app or website isn’t a problem. It’s a chance to build something better next time. Tech leaders have even gathered for an event called FailCon. At a FailCon, they learn from ideas that didn’t work. “Sometimes things just don’t go as planned,” says the FailCon website. “But that doesn’t mean you should stop trying.” That message got through to a man named Evan Williams. In 2005, he developed an app called Odeo. Not many people used it. It was a big disappointment. But Williams learned from his mistakes and kept working hard. He showed grit. And a few years later, he helped create one of the biggest social media sites ever. 28. Why are we afraid to fail according to the text? A. We believe failure is shameful. B. Failure blocks our way to success. C. We do not know how to deal with failure. D. Today’s society puts a lot of pressure on us to succeed. 29. What are people with grit most likely to do when they fail? A. Seek help. B. Accept failure. C. Keep working hard. D. Try something new. 30. Why do tech leaders have FailCon? A. To develop an app. B. To design a website. C. To learn from failure. D. To develop work plans. 31. What does the author want to tell us by the example of Evan Williams? A. Failure is a common thing in one’s life. B. Success comes to those who never give up. C. Winners make it happen; losers let it happen. D. The secret of success is not to change your goals. D All it takes is three continuous nights of sleep loss to cause your mental and physical well-being to greatly worsen. A new study looked at the consequences of sleeping fewer than six hours for eight nights on end — the minimum duration of sleep that is necessary to support best health in average adults. Lead author Soomi Lee, assistant professor at the University of South Florida, found the biggest jump in symptoms appeared after just one night of sleep loss. The number of mental and physical problems steadily got worse, peaking on day three. At that point, research shows the human body got relatively used to repeated sleep loss. But that all changed on day six, when participants reported that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst. “Many of us think that we can pay our sleep debt on weekends and be more productive on weekdays.” Lee said. “However, results from this study show that having just one night of sleep loss can significantly weaken your daily functioning.” Data provided by the Midlife in the United Study included nearly 2000 middle-aged adults who were relatively healthy and well-educated. Among them 42% had at least one night of sleep loss, sleeping 1.5 fewer hours than their typical routines. They recorded their mental and physical behaviors in a diary for eight days in a row, allowing researchers to review how sleep loss causes wear and tear on the body. Participants reported a pile-up of angry, nervous, lonely, bad-tempered and frustrated feelings as a result of sleep loss. They also experienced more physical symptoms, such as upper respiratory issues, aches, gastrointestinal (肠胃的) problems and other health concerns. These negative feelings and symptoms were continuously sharpened throughout continuous sleep loss days and didn't return to baseline levels unless they had a night sleep of more than six hours. Lee says the best way to maintain a strong daily performance is to set aside more than six hours to sleep every night. 32. When did participants have the worst physical symptoms? A. On day 1. B. On day 3. C. On day 6. D. On day 8. 33. What does the fourth paragraph suggest? A. We can make up for sleep loss on weekends. B. We can improve our efficiency if we sleep enough on weekends. C. Even one night of sleep loss can affect our daily performance. D. It doesn't matter if we don't get enough sleep occasionally. 34. How can we solve the problems caused by sleep loss? A. By setting aside over 5 hours each night. B. By reducing negative feelings and symptoms. C. By doing exercise and listening to music. D. By sparing over 6 hours to sleep each night. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. The concept of sleep loss. B. The consequences of sleep loss. C. The methods of avoiding sleep loss. D. The causes of sleep loss. How To Avoid Addiction Of Social Media? Social media play such a big part in the modern generation. The memory of that meeting is an unclear picture — my mother told me I’d held tightly to her legs, burying my face in her skirt, too frightened to even glance at the stranger who called himself my dad. As a child, I’d thought I’d grow to feel angry with him for being absent from all the little moments that made up my childhood. But that angry feeling never took root. Even then, I understood: with much important special work to do far from home, he’d had no choice but to miss many occasions to accompany me. I could only imagine the pain in his heart, and the lonely nights when he’d stayed awake in the bed, staring at the photo of our family, missing his wife and the little girl he hardly knew. When father finally went back home after years of separation, our long- awaited reunion, nevertheless, didn’t bridge the gap between us. We lived under the same roof, yet he felt like a polite guest — distant, unfamiliar, and always careful not to cross any line. I got away from his every attempt to connect: I’d answer his gentle questions with short words, avoid his offers to play chess or fly kites, and stand still as a statue (雕像) when he reached out to touch my head gently. The years of growing up without a father’s company had left a quiet empty space in my heart, a gap that seemed too wide to fill. I secretly wanted his warmth and attention. However, all these changed during one important summer vacation when I decided to learn to ride a bike by myself. Unexpectedly, it rewrote the story of our father-daughter bond forever. One afternoon, I fell off the bike suddenly while learning and father saw it. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, I managed to ride the bike without falling. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $第一节听下面几段对话。 Kyle has the day off today. We had many books. A 25. C 26. C 27. 根据第一段中“We had many books. 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. C 31. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述人们惧怕失败的原因及失败的价值,强调毅力助力成功。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“From an early age, we’re surrounded by people who value perfection. Parents tell us to bring home A’s. Coaches teach us to go for the gold, not the silver or bronze. And on social media, people share only the coolest parts of their lives.(从小时候起,我们身边就围绕着崇尚完美的人。父母要求我们拿A回家。教练教导我们要去争金牌,而不是银牌或铜牌。在社交媒体上,人们只分享自己生活中最光鲜的部分)”可知,社会各方面都在向我们灌输要追求完美、争取成功的观念,给我们施加了诸多压力,这是我们惧怕失败的原因。故选D项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“To people with grit, failure is not a reason to give up, but a chance to improve.(对于有毅力的人来说,失败不是放弃的理由,而是一个改进的机会)”可知,有毅力的人在遭遇失败时不会放弃,而是会继续努力改进。故选C项。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“At a FailCon, they learn from ideas that didn’t work.(在失败大会上,他们从那些行不通的想法中吸取教训)”可知,科技行业的领导者举办失败大会是为了从失败中学习经验。故选C项。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段中的“But Williams learned from his mistakes and kept working hard. He showed grit. And a few years later, he helped create one of the biggest social media sites ever.(但威廉姆斯从错误中吸取教训,继续努力。他展现出了毅力。几年后,他参与创办了有史以来最大的社交媒体平台之一)”可知,作者通过埃文・威廉姆斯的例子,想要告诉我们成功属于那些永不放弃的人。故选B项。 D All it takes is three continuous nights of sleep loss to cause your mental and physical well-being to greatly worsen. 【答案】32. C 33. C 34. D 35. B 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了,一项新研究表明,连续三个晚上的睡眠不足会对你的身心健康造成巨大损害。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。由第三段中的“But that all changed on day six, when participants reported that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst. (但在第六天,所有这些都发生了变化,当时参与者报告说身体症状的严重程度处于最糟糕的状态)”可知,在第六天参与者的身体症状最糟糕。故选C项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。由第四段中的“However, results from this study show that having just one night of sleep loss can significantly weaken your daily functioning. (然而,这项研究的结果表明,仅仅一晚的睡眠不足就可以显著削弱你的日常功能)”可知,即使一晚的睡眠不足也会影响我们的日常表现。故选C项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。由倒数第二段“These negative feelings and symptoms were continuously sharpened throughout continuous sleep loss days and didn't return to baseline levels unless they had a night sleep of more than six hours. (这些消极的感觉和症状在连续睡眠不足的日子里不断加剧,除非他们晚上的睡眠超过6小时,否则不会恢复到基线水平)”和最后一段“Lee says the best way to maintain a strong daily performance is to set aside more than six hours to sleep every night. (Lee说,保持良好的日常表现的最好方法是每晚留出六个小时以上的睡眠时间)”可知,要解决因睡眠不足引起的问题就需要每晚留出六个小时以上的睡眠时间。故选D项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。由第一段“All it takes is three continuous nights of sleep loss to cause your mental and physical well-being to greatly worsen. (运用了省略that的宾语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 The first time I saw my father, I was three years old. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 One afternoon, I fell off the bike suddenly while learning and father saw it. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, I managed to ride the bike without falling. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 One afternoon, I fell off the bike suddenly while learning and father saw it. His eyes widened with concern as he rushed over to me. “Are you okay?” he asked anxiously, his voice filled with worry. I nodded, trying to hide the pain I felt. He gently helped me up and examined my scraped knee, which was bleeding slightly. Then, he said, “Let me help you learn. I know you can do it.” His words, which were full of encouragement, made me feel a warmth I hadn’t felt in years. Finally, I managed to ride the bike without falling. A huge smile spread across my face as I realized what I had achieved. Father stood beside me, clapping his hands in delight. “You did it!” he exclaimed proudly. I looked at him, feeling a bond between us that had been missing for so long. I knew then that his love had always been there, even when he was far away. This simple act of learning to ride a bike had brought us closer together, filling the empty space in my heart. 词汇激活 行为类 ① 冲:rush/dash ② 扶起:help me up/lift me up/raise me to my feet ③ 检查:examine/check/inspect 情绪类: ① 担心:concern/worry/anxiety ② 自豪:proudly/with pride/feeling proud 【点睛】【高分句型1】He gently helped me up and examined my scraped knee, which was bleeding slightly.(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】A huge smile spread across my face as I realized what I had achieved.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句和what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
