Saihanba, in northern Hebei Province, is a true green miracle (奇迹) in China. Thanks to the hard work of three generations (一代人) of Chinese people over 60 years, it has been turned from a lifeless wasteland into a huge, thick forest.
Over 400 years ago, Saihanba was covered with thick forests and lots of wild animals. Its cool summers and green grasslands made it a perfect place for the ancient royal (皇室的) family to spend holidays. But later, people cut down too many trees. The forest disappeared, the land became dry and full of sand, and sandstorms happened more and more often. To stop the sandstorms from reaching Beijing, the Chinese government decided in 1962 to build the Saihanba Forest Farm. It sent 369 forest workers, most of them in their twenties, to plant trees there.
The first forest workers faced great difficulties. They had only simple tools and had to work in very cold and dry weather. Many young trees didn’t survive (存活). But the workers never gave up. With 60 years of hard work from three generations, Saihanba was reborn. Today, it is a beautiful wonderland. Its forest coverage has risen from 11.4% to 80%. The forest can hold and clean 137,000,000 m3 of water every year.
This wonderful story has created the “Saihanba Spirit”—working hard, facing difficulties bravely, and daring to innovate (创新). As one of the largest man-made forests in the world, the Saihanba Tree-Planting Team won the UN Champions of the Earth award for its great green achievements.
4. What was Saihanba like before the forest farm was built?
A. A lifeless wasteland. B. A snowy mountain. C. A blue ocean.
5. Why did the Chinese government decide to build the Saihanba Forest Farm?
A. To get more wood for daily use.
B. To protect Beijing from sandstorms.
C. To keep more animals for forest workers.
6. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. The forest workers used modern tools to plant trees.
B. The forest brings no good to local water environment.
C. Three generations worked hard to rebuild Saihanba’s forest.
7. Which saying best matches the “Saihanba Spirit” in the text?
A. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
C
Have you ever wondered how AI like ChatGPT understands human languages? It breaks all text into small pieces called “tokens”. For a long time, Chinese science workers used different names for this term, which caused lots of trouble. Now, the Chinese government has given it a Chinese name: ciyuan (词元).
So, what is a token? We can think of it as the basic unit of text. A token can be a whole word, part of a word, a single Chinese character (汉字), or even a punctuation (标点符号) mark. For English, about four letters make up one token. For Chinese, one single character is usually one token, and common two character words may also be counted as one token.
Why are tokens so important? They are more than just a technical term (术语) Tokens are used to work out how much computing power an AI needs. They are also the unit that AI companies use to set prices for their services. For example, when you use AI, you may pay based on how many tokens you use.
China’s AI is growing very fast. Right now, a huge number of tokens are used across the country every single day! That’s really a lot. What’s more, Chinese AI services are much cheaper than those from most other countries.
In the future, tokens may become as essential as the electricity or running water we use in our daily life. By giving tokens the official name “ciyuan”, China hopes to make clearer rules for its AI market, help the public understand AI better, and build a better development environment for AI.
8. Why did the Chinese government give the official Chinese name “ciyuan” to tokens?
A. To stop people from using AI technology.
B. To make Chinese AI services more expensive.
C. To end the trouble from different names of tokens.
9. What can you learn about tokens from the text?
A. Many tokens are used in China every day.
B. For English, ten letters make up one token.
C. Users always pay the same money for tokens.
10. What does the underlined word “essential” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unnecessary. B. Useless. C. Important.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To teach readers how to use AI.
B. To show the bright future of China’s AI.
C. To introduce the AI term “tokens” and its importance.

第一节

In a small village school in China, a young music teacher named Wu Yuzheng had a big difficulty. Most of her students had never sung a full song before. They were “left-behind children” whose parents worked far away from home.
Wu wanted to start a school choir (合唱团), but it seemed impossible at first. The children could not follow basic rhythm (节奏) or lyrics (歌词). She felt worried. Then, she got a chance to learn the Kodaly Method, a special way of teaching music from Hungary (匈牙利). It uses hand signs and games to make music learning easy and enjoyable.
After the training, she decided to have a try. She chose about 20 students for her choir. They practiced in a simple meeting room with little equipment (设备). Sometimes, students wanted to give up because of heavy schoolwork or the cost of training. But Wu held a special meeting for the parents and invited them to enjoy their children’s show. They were deeply moved and promised to support their children.
Finally, the choir got a chance to give a show on stage at a city school. The children, dressed in simple clothes, sang a song based on a classical Chinese poem. They were a little nervous, but very proud. Their wonderful progress surprised everyone.
Wu’s one-year teaching journey in the village taught her an important lesson: music belongs to every child, no matter where they are from.

Small Warmth, Great Power
Everyone has warm moments in life.
Last term, I felt really upset because I failed the math exam. Just then, my classmate Li Ming came up to me and comforted me patiently. He cheered me up and shared his notes with me. He also helped me work out difficult problems. Little by little, I made great progress.
This small act of kindness warmed my heart deeply. I realized that even a small act of kindness can light up someone’s world. From then on, I learned to pass on this kindness to others.
