In recent years, many places across China have introduced an important reform for the high school entrance exam, or zhongkao. One major change is that biology and geography will no longer be included in students’ total exam scores. Instead, students will be graded A, B, C or D according to their performance. The reform aims to reduce academic (学业的) pressure and make educational evaluation fairer and more reasonable.
Supporters of the change believe it brings clear advantages. It reduces unnecessary competition among eighth-grade students, who no longer need to struggle for every single point in these two subjects. It also allows learners to focus more on core subjects such as Chinese, mathematics, English and physics, which are highly important for their later high school education. Meanwhile, students can have more time for sports, hobbies and other activities that support healthy growth.
However, some parents and teachers have expressed worries. They worry that biology and geography may receive less attention in daily teaching, which may weaken students’ basic knowledge. Some also point out that the two subjects help develop students’ scientific and cultural literacy, so they should still be valued.
In fact, the reform carries clear and positive long-term meaning. This does not mean the two subjects have become unimportant; they remain required courses with unified (统一的) examination requirements. Its real purpose is to guide education away from over-focus on scores and toward more balanced development. The reform will help create a healthier learning environment and improve the overall quality of basic education.
46. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of biology and geography in school education.
B. A new reform about the high school entrance exam in China.
C. Different opinions on teaching core subjects in junior high school.
D. Ways to improve the overall quality of basic education.
47. According to the passage, what will happen to biology and geography in the reform?
A. They will not be included in students’ total exam scores.
B. They will become more important than physics and English.
C. Students will not have to take exams in these two subjects.
D. Schools will stop offering these two courses completely.
48. Why do some parents and teachers worry about the reform?
A. Students will pay less attention to biology and geography.
B. Students will have too much free time for hobbies.
C. Core subjects will receive less attention in class.
D. There will be more competition among students.
49. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. healthy growth B. high school education C. competition D. the reform
50. What is the writer’s attitude toward the reform?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Uncaring.

People in most villages in northern China spend winters lazily after the year’s harvest until the planting season arrives in spring. Not so for the local people of Yandunjiao Village in Shandong Province’s Rongcheng City.
“We are much busier in winter than in summer,” Gao Yongjin says. Gao runs the village’s biggest homestay. It is less than 10 meters from the bay (湾) where thousands of swans (天鹅) fly from Siberia and stay from November to April.
“Many tourists come to see the swans in winter,” Gao says. “They prefer to stay in our village for several days to enjoy seaside life. We also have restaurants to provide them with different kinds of food.”
Tourism development has greatly changed people’s lives there. Over 60 of the village’s around 220 families run homestays. Every year, the village welcomes about a hundred thousand tourists.
It’s the local government’s efforts that have progressed the village. Rongcheng started a project to improve river-water quality years ago. Now its water quality is Grade 2, the second highest in China’s water-quality system, which means it’s drinkable after treatment (处理).
Rongcheng is so clean because the city has developed a volunteer and a credit (信用) system. This system encourages local people to join in such work as environmental protection, public service and tour guiding. The city has created credit records for local people. Those who get enough scores can enjoy some public services, such as bus transportation, for free.
Rongcheng was listed as a demonstration zone (示范区) for developing tourism on December 17, 2020 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. “Being listed as a demonstration area is a new start. And there is still a lot to do because tourists’ demands (需求) are increasing and changing,” says Wang Xiaofeng, an official from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
