In Russia, if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them (one, three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany, if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Don’t take thirteen of anything because it’s an unlucky number. Don’t take an even number of anything, either. Don’t wrap your presents in white, brown, or black paper.

It’s important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult and there are pictures in it. They make the book easy to comprehend.
In daily life, before children are going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners. And you can have a manners match. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They should be quiet in class and listen to their teachers. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. Good table manners are important too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners will help your children a lot in their daily life. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

People drive in all countries, but the rules can be quite different. For this reason, you should always learn the laws before you decide to drive in a foreign country.
In the US, people in Alaska may have a learner’s permit (实习驾照) at the age of fourteen. This is quite different from the driving laws of Niger. There a person must be at least twenty-three years old to drive. If you want to know how old you need to be to drive in most countries, the answer is eighteen. It may also surprise you to learn that not every country allows women to drive, although most of the countries do.
Driving on the right or left side of the road is also different. In Great Britain, Cyprus, Australia, India and Malaysia, people drive on the left. However, in the US, Mexico, France and Canada, people must drive on the right. In fact, one country can have different driving rules for different areas. People in Hong Kong drive on the left, while drivers in other parts of China use the right side of the road.
Other different driving laws between countries include those about using mobile phones. In Japan, using any kind of mobile phones when driving is illegal (非法的), even if you don’t need to hold the phone with your hands. However, in Argentina and Australia, drivers can talk on their mobile phones if they do not use their hands to hold the phone.
You might also find it interesting to learn that some countries have very unusual laws. For example, in Cyprus, it is illegal to eat or drink anything while driving.
32.Why should people learn driving laws before driving in a foreign country?
A.It’s a popular hobby.
B.To get a license quickly.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It's a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?”
At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father. “It's a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW'? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page:
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the
window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.
Paragraph 1: After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. __________________________________________________________
