I grew up in a poor family. My dad died when I was three, leaving my mom with the job of raising nine kids. She had two jobs every day and she was a very hard worker. In order to make ends meet, she hardly ever rested.
My mom did all she could to support our family. Though we kids didn’t get what we wanted, we always got the things we needed. With my mom as my role model, I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.
While growing up, I never considered myself a person in a difficult situation. I saw my life more as a card that had been dealt to me and I tried to make the most of it.
Of course, I dreamed about what I would be. At first, I wanted to be a soldier. Then I decided to be a driver. I even thought about being a footballer.
Surprising as it might seem, basketball wasn’t in my plans. I only started playing basketball on a team when I was in middle school. I loved to compete and worked hard to win.
For me, it paid off. I just let my success in basketball take its course, but I always put the effort in every day.
No matter what I did, some people expected me to fail, saying, “Karl can’t do it.” Instead of letting people like that get to me, I continued to prove (证明) them wrong. I tried my best to make my family proud.
While everyone else was looking up to popular sports stars, actors and musicians, my mom was my hero. She taught me that hard work pays off.
At the end of my life, I don’t want to be remembered as the kind of person who just sat on his bottom and said, “I’ve made it.” I don’t want to say that I get what I have now without putting in much effort. Sure, there are days that I don’t feel like working hard…But I do it anyway. And that’s how I’m working toward becoming a successful basketball player.

A new study has found that hedgehogs (刺猬) have quite amazing hearing. They can hear very high sounds that humans, cats and dogs can’t hear, according to the research. The researchers hope that special noise-making devices (设备) could be built to help keep hedgehogs away from roads.
Hedgehog numbers are falling and cars are a big reason. A 2022 report found that hedgehog numbers in the British countryside had dropped by up to 75% in just over 20 years. It is thought that nearly a third of hedgehogs are killed by cars when crossing roads. Sophie Lund Rasmussen, from the University of Oxford, England, had the idea to build a sound device that could make hedgehogs scared and stay away from roads. However, she needed to know how good their hearing was first.
Researchers worked with 20 hedgehogs from Danish wildlife rescue centres, studying how their brains replied to short periods of sounds. They found there was brain activity when hedgehogs heard frequencies (频率) between 4 and 85 kilohertz (kHz). The highest frequency people can hear is 20 kHz. Anything over it is in the ultrasonic range Dogs can hear up to 45kHz and cats up to 65kHz. In other words, hedgehogs can hear super high noises that humans, dogs and cats can’t pick up.
Rasmussen said more research was needed to work out exactly which sound drives hedgehogs away. Once they discover this, they could design a device that gives off an ultrasound noise. It could be fitted to cars and grass-cutting machines to drive hedgehogs away from roads, but be safe for humans and other pets.
The test results also raise the possibility that hedgehogs are talking to each other with high sounds that are hidden from humans. “Imagine that in fact they’re chatting all the time and we just couldn’t hear it,” said Rasmussen.
31.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The hedgehogs’ fear of cars. B.The background of a research.
C.Different ways to protect hedgehogs. D.The introduction to a scientist.
32.What is the highest frequency that hedgehogs are proved to hear in the study?
A.20 kHz. B.45 kHz. C.65 kHz. D.85 kHz.
33.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The sound that drives hedgehogs away.
B.The device that makes an ultrasound noise.
C.The noise which brings trouble to most pets.
D.The way to do more research about hedgehogs.
34.What does the writer probably talk about after the last paragraph?
A.How hedgehogs communicate with each other.
B.Why humans’ hearing is worse than hedgehogs’.
C.What trouble ultrasound noise will bring to people.
D.When a device will be used to search for hedgehogs.
35.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why hedgehogs are getting fewer.
B.To warn people to stay away from hedgehogs.
C.To introduce the amazing hearing of hedgehogs.
D.To show a study about hedgehogs and its possible use.

Are you tired of spending all your free time on screens? Offline hobbies are activities you do in the real world, rather than on a computer or phone. They can improve your focus, develop your problem-solving skills, and help you feel more creative. 36
Consider the possibilities
There are many types of offline hobbies. If you enjoy music, you can try collecting records or tapes for a more real listening experience. 37 So there is always something that fits your interest.
Turn to helpful resources
First, you can ask your family if they can help you try a new activity. Someone in your family may be able to teach you useful skills, like cooking, gardening, or model building. 38 With an adult’s help, you can also look for free classes or clubs at your school or local library. 39
Instead of setting a big goal right away, you can enjoy a hobby in small steps. For example, if you are learning woodworking, you might start with building a simple birdhouse. As you gain more experience, you can move on to bigger projects.
Make it easy to practice
It’s easier to spend time on a hobby if you have a special space for it, like a corner in your room. Another idea is to bring your hobby with you when you go out. You can make a “hobby bag”out of a spare backpack. 40 This way, you can enjoy your hobby anytime, anywhere.
So why not give offline hobbies a try? You might find a new interest and make your free time more meaningful.
A.Another good way is to find support from outside your home.
B.Outdoor hobbies like cycling and bird-watching are also great choices.
C.Here are some useful tips to start your offline hobbies.
D.Pack it with screen-free items like books, art supplies, or cards.
E.Start small with easy steps.

In China, there is a PE test in zhongkao. For a long time, the PE test only had a few events, such as running, long jump, and pull-ups. However, this has started to change. According to a recent news report, some cities have reformed their PE tests. Students now can choose from over twenty different sports and activities. The new choices include not only traditional sports like basketball and badminton, but also local traditional games, such as throwing gesio. The purpose is to make PE tests fair and interesting. Different students have different talents. Some may not be good at running but are excellent at throwing or jumping. By offering more choices, the exam allows every student to show their best skills. Another important change is the scoring system. The total score for the PE test has been increased greatly to match other subjects like Chinese or math. This shows that physical health is just as important as other subject scores. The reform encourages students to develop a lifelong habit of sports. It also helps keep traditional games alive.

根据第一段第二句“Do you want to read more books?”,询问“你想要读更多的书吗?”;第一段最后一句“Bring...books that you don’t want to keep, and swap them for other books that you enjoy.”,你可以用你不想要的书来交换你喜欢的其他书,所以图书交换日的目的是“让孩子们读更多他们喜欢的书”。
23.根据HOW部分“STEP 1:...You can leave notes inside...why you like them. Just don’t write any important plot (情节) on your notes!”,纸条上要写喜欢这本书的原因,不能写任何重要的情节,选项D“我非常喜欢这本书,因为……”
24.根据HOW部分“STEP 2: For each book that you bring here to be swapped, you will receive a ticket that you can use on Swap Day to choose another book.”,每带来一本书可以获得一张票,在交换日每张票可以换一本书。

根据文章第二段最后一句“With my mom as my role model, I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.”
27.根据文章第四段作者提到曾想当士兵、司机或足球运动员,紧接着第五段首句说“Surprising as it might seem, basketball wasn’t in my plans.”
28.根据文章第七段内容“Instead of letting people like that get to me, I continued to prove them wrong.
31.B 32.D 33.A 34.A 35.D
32.根据第三段中“They found there was brain activity when hedgehogs heard frequencies between 4 and 85 kilohertz (kHz).”
33.根据第四段前一句“work out exactly which sound drives hedgehogs away”可知,研究人员需要先找到这种特定的声音。

Now AI is widely used in our study. AI makes our study more convenient. When I meet difficult problems, I can search for useful learning information with AI quickly. It helps me check my homework and explain knowledge points clearly.
However, we shouldn’t depend on AI too much. We need to think independently first before asking AI for help. We should have good self-control and use AI in the right way.
In my opinion, AI is a great helper for students. If we use it wisely, it will help us develop better learning habits and make greater progress.
