On the balcony of my tenth-floor apartment, I looked at the sky curiously, hoping to see a shooting star (流星). “Shooting stars are lucky,” Grandma always said. “Will I see a shooting star tonight, Grandma?” I asked. “There are too many lights tonight, Judy.” Grandma said, “Time for bed and I hear dreams calling.” Then, she kissed my hair and put me to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I smelled buttermilk biscuits. My favorite! “Your shooting stars came for breakfast,” Grandma smiled. In her hands was a plate of star-shaped biscuits, each with a lovely little tail. My eyes went wide, and then they filled with something shining. When I got home from school that afternoon, Grandma was cooking in the kitchen. I told her something about school. “Sarah saw a rainbow on her way to school. Ben got the last cookie from the dining hall... Will I see a shooting star tonight?” I asked again, still full of hope. “The night isn’t over yet. Go to the balcony and wait,” Grandma smiled softly. After dinner, I couldn’t find Grandma anywhere. I went to the balcony alone, staring at the dark sky and still hoping to see a shooting star. Suddenly, the sky was lit up. I nearly shouted out. A shooting star? But then—boom—gold sparks (火花) danced above me and fell slowly. It was fireworks! Before I could catch my breath, another followed, a shining blue, then a red, painting the quiet night with bright colors. My heart jumped with joy and wonder. When I turned around, I saw Grandma standing in the doorway, with an empty firework box in her left hand. “Do you like the shooting stars tonight?” She smiled. He began to think that he knew everything about boats now. So he said, “Rat! Please, I want to row!” Rat shook his head with a smile. “Not yet. It’s not as easy as it looks.” Mole was quiet, but he wanted to row indeed. He was sure he could row as well as Rat. Then, before Rat could stop him, he jumped up, and pulled the oars out of the surprised Rat’s hands. Rat fell off his seat, calling out, “Stop! You’ll have us in the river!” Mole made a great dig, but the oars never touched the water at all. Mole fell over. Frightened, he tried to hold the side of the boat, and the next moment—splash! Mole and Rat and the lunch basket were all in the water. Of course, it was Rat who pulled Mole out of the water. Rat turned the boat right way up and got the lunch basket from the bottom of the river. And he laughed and laughed. When all was ready again, the poor Mole sat in the boat very wet. As they left, he said in a low voice, “Rat, I have been so silly. I am really sorry indeed.” “Never mind!” replied Rat kindly. “I’m always in and out of the water myself, so don’t worry about it. I’ll teach you to row and to swim.” Mole found no words to say at that moment. When they got home, they had a good hot dinner in front of a bright fire while Rat told exciting stories of life on the river. D Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have made a new “bubble wrap” that can collect clean drinking water from the air—even in Death Valley, the driest desert in North America. This invention could help many people around the world get safe drinking water, especially in places where water is hard to find. The team shared their results in a study on June 11, 2025. The device uses a water-absorbing material called hydrogel (水凝胶), placed between two layers of glass, much like a window. At night, it takes water vapor from the air. During the day, the water vapor turns into liquid on the cool glass and then flows into small tubes. The hydrogel has many small domes, like bubble wrap. These domes grow bigger when they take in water from the air. They increase the surface area, helping the material collect more water. Scientists tested the device for one week in Death Valley. Each panel made about 57 to 161 milliliters of water daily—about a quarter to two-thirds of a cup. In wetter areas, it could make even more. The device also works without electricity. Older designs had a problem: lithium (锂) salt, used to help take in water, sometimes leaked (泄漏) into the water and made it dangerous to drink. But this new design uses glycerol (甘油) which keeps the salt from leaking. This way, the lithium salt level stays far below safety limits. Eight panels (each about 1 metre by 2 metres) could provide enough water for a family. The system is not too expensive and can last at least a year. “We imagine these panels could be used in many places,” said MIT researcher Xuanhe Zhao. “They don’t take up much space, and people can build more of them to make a real difference.” 37. Why was the bubble wrap invented? A. To store water in dry deserts. B. To cool houses in hot areas. C. To collect drinking water from the air. D. To make dry places wetter. 38. Where did scientists test the new water-collecting device? A. In a wet forest in North America. B. In Death Valley. C. In MIT’s laboratory. D. In a city with serious water problems. 39. How does the new design make the collected water safer to drink than older ones? A. It uses no lithium salt at all. B. It works without electricity. C. It can clean the water automatically. D. It uses glycerol to stop lithium salt from leaking. 40. What can we infer from the passage? A. Making the collected water safe was a big step. B. This is the first time scientists have tried to get water from air. C. Working with less power is the device’s most important feature. D. People need to build a special room for the device. 第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中一项为多余选项。 To make our life better, we often have things that we want to change—our eating habits, our health conditions, our grades, etc. Here are some ways that can help you change. ◆____41____ Understand why you want to change and what you want to do.
