When Alex was in the 5th grade, he read an alarming article in the newspaper, which said that people were ____1____ old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and dumping cell phones in the garbage. This is dangerous because e-waste contains harmful ____2____ that can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.
Alex was worried and decided to make it the next project for WIN — the Westerly Innovations Network. He and six of his friends had formed this ____3____ to help solve community problems two years before.
But what could they do about this project with e-waste? The team spent several weeks gathering information about the harmful chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose (处置) of e-waste ____4____ and how it could be recycled. Then, they sent out a survey and found only one in eight knew what e-waste was, let alone how to dispose of it.
Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and ____5____ notices to students, asking residents to bring their ____6____ electronics to the school parking lot. The ____7____ lasted two days, and they collected over 9, 500 kilograms of e-waste.
The next step was to set up a long-term e-waste drop-off center for the town. After some research, they’d learned that reusing is the best way to ____8____ electronic devices and it is seven times more efficient than recycling. So, they began leaning to refurbish (翻新) computers themselves and distributed them to students who didn’t have their own. In this way, they could help students in the area and protect the environment at the same time.
For a lasting ____9____ to e-waste, the drop-off center wasn’t enough. Laws would have to be passed. In 2016, WIN helped push for an e-waste bill in their town, which required companies that manufactured or sold electronics to take back e-waste. The bill clearly ____10____ the dumping of e-waste.
Because of the work of Alex’s organization, more and more people, like Alex and his team members, are getting the message about the safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful garbage.”

In the glittering world of Olympic figure skating, where every move is judged under the harshest of lights, failures can be brutally exposed. It was during one such moment that Mario, a once-promising star, stumbled (绊倒) and fell, his dream crashing down with the thud (砰的一声) of the skate blades on the ice.
The initial shock was followed by a deep sense of despair. Doubts crept in, whispering that he might never rise again. Each day seemed darker than the last, as Mario struggled to find his footing in a world that suddenly felt so alien and unforgiving of himself.
But within this darkness, Mario began to forgive himself and accept the reality. He remembered the countless hours of training, the sacrifices made, and the love for the sport that had burned so brightly before. Slowly, he picked himself up, dusted off the ice shards (碎片) of defeat, and began to skate again.
This time, it was different. Each fall became a lesson, each mistake an opportunity for growth. He learned to embrace his failures, using them as stepping stones to greater heights. With renewed determination, Mario pushed himself harder, skating with a newfound grace and power.
Finally, the day arrived when our hero stepped onto the Olympic ice once more. This time, there was no fear, only focus. As the music went on and he began his routine, every move flowed with effortless elegance. When the final note rang out, he knew he had done it. This young man had risen from the ashes of failure and embraced success again, stronger and more brilliant than before.
As the crowd erupted in applause and the athlete stood center ice, a single tear traced down his cheek. It was a tear of joy, relief, and pride — a testament to the journey he had endured. At that moment, he understood that failure was not the end, but rather a beginning — a chance to rise stronger, wiser, and more determined. And so, Mario smiled, knowing that the road ahead, no matter how bumpy, would be filled with the sweet taste of victory and the knowledge that true success comes from overcoming the toughest challenges.
24. What made Mario so unforgiving toward himself?
A. His sudden loss of balance on the ice.
B. His struggle to regain control after the fall.
C. His skate blades getting caught on the surface.
D. His hopelessness and self-doubt after the failure.
25. How did the athlete adjust himself back to the ice stage?
A. He encouraged himself to forget the disappointment and move on.
B. He transformed himself into a more confident and powerful performer.
C. He acknowledged the failures and turned them into motivation for growth.
D. He increased the intensity of his training and endured greater physical strain.
26. Which of the following best describes Mario in this passage?
A. Sensible and graceful. B. Modest and dedicated.
C. Strong-willed and resilient. D. Hardworking and elegant.
27. What can we learn from this story?
A. Chances favor the prepared.
B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Constant dripping wears away the stone.
D. What doesn’t defeat you makes you stronger.
D 25. C 26. C 27. D

C
Once I believed people switched on subtitles only when the dialogue was unclear. I insisted that words at the bottom of the screen stole the purity of film art — the slight tremble (颤抖) of an actor’s lip or the perfect pause before a funny line.
Recent numbers, however, show that I am defending an empty castle. A 2021 survey found that 80% of viewers aged 18-25 use subtitles “always” or “often”. In 2023, streaming platform U reported that figure is even higher — 87% — among British people in their twenties. In contrast, less than 25% of older audiences use subtitles, despite generally having poorer hearing. The minority has become the majority.
What makes the young — most of whom are not hearing-impaired (受损的) — so fond of reading while watching? The cliché blames a short attention span, but the real answer is more complicated. Growing up with phones in hand, Gen-Z views TV as only one part of their larger media world. The U survey shows that 80% of them “double-screen”, texting or scrolling while the show runs. Subtitles act like a quick download: a glance gives the line, the eye returns to the phone, and no plot is lost. Efficiency wins over pure absorption.
Social media has pushed the habit further. Since captions are automatically on in some apps, many creators design their videos around quick text that viewers must see. This works well because videos with captions get more views and are recommended more often by the apps. With 85% of mobile videos now watched on silent, subtitles are no longer just for accessibility — they’re a business strategy.
AI transcription (转录) also makes subtitles easy to produce, which means creators don’t have to pay for human transcribers. This has created a feedback loop: young people are so used to seeing text on screen that they expect it everywhere, even on traditional TV.
Perhaps the deeper shift is in our purpose: we watch to keep up, not to sink in. After work, we sit down on the sofa longing not for beauty or surprise, but for the quiet satisfaction of “comprehension”. Television was meant to be an escape; now it is another task we efficiently finish.
Though I still sometimes enjoy subtitle-free, immersive (沉浸式的) watching, it’s now a rare luxury, as the age of pure viewing fades away and Gen-Z’s subtitle habit is just one sign of how media consumption has evolved.
28. The underlined phrase “defending an empty castle” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. supporting a popular trend
B. criticizing a new technology
C. protecting an important tradition
D. fighting for a meaningless position
29. Most Gen-Z use subtitles to ________.
A. make up for hearing problems while watching
B. boost watching efficiency while multitasking
C. make out the unclear dialogues in TV shows
D. satisfy their love for reading over watching
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Subtitles reflect a shift away from immersive viewing.
B. Video creators add subtitles to follow platform rules.
C. AI transcription empowers the accuracy of subtitles.
D. People watch TV more to enjoy than to understand.
31. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. How AI and Social Media Reshape Viewing
B. Why Gen Z Can’t Watch TV Without Subtitles
C. Why Gen Z’s Subtitle Habit Should Be Opposed
D. How Gen Z’s Subtitle Habit Changes the Film Industry
D 29. B 30. A 31. B
根据第1段中“I insisted that words at the bottom of the screen stole the purity of film art — the slight tremble of an actor’s lip or the perfect pause before a funny line.(我始终认为,荧幕下方的字幕夺走了电影艺术本真的纯粹:演员唇边细微的颤动,或是喜剧台词抛出前恰到好处的停顿,这些美感都因此折损.)”及第2段中“A 2021 survey found that 80% of viewers aged 18‑25 use subtitles “always” or “often”.(2021年一项调查发现,80%的18‑25岁观众总是或经常使用字幕。)”
根据第3段中“The U survey shows that 80% of them “double‑screen”, texting or scrolling while the show runs. Subtitles act like a quick download: a glance gives the line, the eye returns to the phone, and no plot is lost. Efficiency wins over pure absorption.(媒体平台U调查显示,80%的人“双屏操作”,一边看剧一边发信息或刷手机。字幕就像快速信息获取方式:瞥一眼就能知道台词,视线回到手机上,也不会错过剧情。效率胜过沉浸式投入。)”可知,Z世代用字幕是为了多任务处理时提升观看效率。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Though I still sometimes enjoy subtitle-free, immersive(沉浸式的) watching, it’s now a rare luxury, as the age of pure viewing fades away and Gen-Z’s subtitle habit is just one sign of how media consumption has evolved.
D
A character in one of Shakespeare’s plays once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Any of these could apply to the modern day sportsmen. Many still argue about the nature of talent. Some claim that people are born to be sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their abilities. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are acknowledged by the public that they truly have greatness fallen upon them.
With this acknowledgement of their “greatness” come all the trappings of modern day celebrity: money, power, influence and responsibility. For better or for worse, like it or hate it, modern sportsmen are the role models of children everywhere. These children will grow up admiring their heroes, devoting their lives to copying their every move, and wanting above all to be like them. Due to this fascination, particularly with the massive influence of the media, it is more important than ever for these sportsmen to acknowledge their responsibility.
In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports icons. Sport stars of the present day are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous (自以为是的) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be saints. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is markedly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.
Of course there is no obligation for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service — unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior is appropriate. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and condemning their actions. Others may copy their heroes’ actions, using them as a shield when accused of the same crimes.
It is undeniable that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship them. Modern-day sportsmen are almost ideals of today’s world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these children’s lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many may both be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.
32. In the first paragraph, the author tries to emphasize ________.
A. the core characteristic great sportsmen possess nowadays
B. different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness
C. sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts
D. sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people

New discoveries and technological breakthroughs are made every year. Yet, as the agricultural sector moves forward, many people in society are looking back to their roots in terms of the food they eat. A “locavore” movement has emerged in the United States, encouraging people to eat foods grown locally and sustainably. ____35____
The United States’ agricultural output is among the highest in the world. Farms here are tremendously productive, thanks to advanced technology and massive inputs. ____36____ Professor Timothy Beach points out that this food system heavily depends on fossil fuels — both for machinery and fertilizer production. As global petrol reserves reduce, such dependence is turning into a growing threat to agricultural stability.
Despite these challenges, the move toward sustainability is growing stronger. Farmers like Louise Keckler run small farms that supply fresh produce through community-supported agriculture networks. ____37____ This freshness not only improves nutrition but also helps consumers understand how climate change affects food systems. This personal connection promotes greater environmental awareness.
Some experts also question whether the “locavore” movement is just a passing craze. ____38____ In response to this concern, Professor Beach admits uncertainty but believes fully sustainable agriculture could still feed the nation. Professor Erin Barnett calls it a lasting trend — a return to a more natural way of eating that aligns (与……一致) with human needs.
____39____ Urban residents are now growing tomatoes on balconies or herbs in window boxes. As Kirk Wilbur, a former urban farming advocate, notes, “No matter how small a space you have, you still have enough room to grow some food.” Local eating is no longer limited to rural areas — it’s becoming a lifestyle accessible to all.
A. In fact, the movement is expanding into cities.
B. They can inspire more responsible consumption habits.
C. However, this productivity comes at a high environmental cost.
D. It shortens supply chains and strengthens producer-consumer ties.
E. In this way, households get food harvested only hours before delivery.
F. Whether temporary or not, they agree it’s made supermarkets rethink sourcing.
G. Many of them believe global supply ensures food security better than local systems.
D 36. C 37. E 38. G 39. A

For most 12-year-olds, any free time after school is spent hanging out with friends, competing in sports, or playing video games. But Alejandro Buxton has another dream: making all-natural candles that he sells online and at a local mall.
The idea was inspired by his mother, who had to give up many of the scented candles she’d filled their home with after realizing the chemicals within them were worsening her allergies, causing her frequent headaches.
So, in 2019, at just 9 years old, the boy started experimenting with making his own, mixing ingredients like soy and coconut waxes with essential oils. He called his first work “Jurassic Orange,” for its color and pleasant smell. Though his mother was a big fan, and the scent didn’t cause her head to ache, Buxton wanted to improve upon his work.
Within the next few months, he’d developed a line of six uniquely scented candles. By the following year, during the worldwide lockdowns, he’d created his own online shop.
Soon after, Alejandro began selling his products on his own website,“Smell of Love Candles,” where shoppers can find offerings with creative names like “Sage the Day!” and “Alexa, clean the house.” He also lists other products such as room sprays for sale.
According to the site, his younger sister Valentina serves as assistant of operations while his mother takes the role of assistant to the CEO.
Now, he is operating his business in a local mall as well. This past September, he opened a stand in D.C.’s Tysons Corner shopping center — making him the youngest leaseholder (承租人) at the mall.
Besides inspiring fellow kids with his entrepreneurial spirit and talent, Alejandro is also a positive role model for giving back and making a difference: He donates a part of his profits to a local charity.
With the experience and knowledge he’s gaining from running this business at such a young age, Alejandro hopes to one day go on to create an engineering business.
40. What is Alejandro’s dream?
________________________________________________________________
41. According to the passage, what are Alejandro’s impacts?
________________________________________________________________
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Alejandro is a successful businessman because he began his candle business and started an engineering business at a young age.
________________________________________________________________
43. Among Alejandro’s qualities, which one do you think will be important for you? Why? (In about 40 words)
________________________________________________________________
40. Making all-natural candles that he sells online and at a local mall.
41. Inspiring fellow kids with his entrepreneurial spirit and talent and being a positive role model for giving back and making a difference.
42. Alejandro is a successful businessman because he began his candle business and started an engineering business at a young age.
According to the passage, he only hopes to one day go on to create an engineering business.
43. Persistence is the quality that will be most important for me. Alejandro kept improving his candles after making his first one and finally created several products and his own shop. This spirit reminds me to keep trying and improving when I face difficulties.
根据第一段中“But Alejandro Buxton has another dream: making all-natural candles that he sells online and at a local mall. (但Alejandro Buxton有另一个梦想:制作纯天然蜡烛,并在网上和当地商场销售。)”可知,Alejandro的梦想是制作纯天然的蜡烛,并在网上和当地一家商场出售。
【41题详解】
考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段“Besides inspiring fellow kids with his entrepreneurial spirit and talent, Alejandro is also a positive role model for giving back and making a difference: He donates a part of his profits to a local charity. (除了用他的创业精神和才能激励同龄人,Alejandro还是回馈社会、带来改变的积极榜样:他将部分利润捐赠给当地慈善机构。)”可知,Alejandro的影响是:他用他的企业家精神和才华激励着孩子们,他是一个积极的榜样,回馈社会,有所作为。
【42题详解】
考查细节理解。根据最后一段“With the experience and knowledge he’s gaining from running this business at such a young age, Alejandro hopes to one day go on to create an engineering business.

When Alex was in the 5th grade, he read an alarming article in the newspaper, which said that people were ____1____ old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and dumping cell phones in the garbage.
