广州将举办马拉松赛并正在招募志愿者。请你阅读下面短文,提取关键信息(每个回答不超过5个词),为同学们介绍马拉松志愿者的工作内容与社会责任。
In a marathon, have you ever seen some special runners holding signs with different finish times? They are marathon pacers (马拉松配速员), also known as “rabbits”. They are usually experienced volunteers who guide a group of runners at a set speed.
Their work is to help others finish the race within their goal time. Usually, there are about 12 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different pace group. Many runners achieve their best finish times with pacers’ help.
Pacers play an important part in a marathon. Firstly, they help runners save energy and avoid slowing down. For example, if you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you will run out of energy quickly and slow down in the second half. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace. You just need to keep up with your pacer. Besides, during the hardest part of the race, pacers support runners by encouraging them.
It’s meaningful but hard to be a pacer. Take Li Jun as an example. He began his marathon journey in 2015. Then he became an active runner. Before he became a pacer, he had not only achieved many good results but also got rich experience in running. In 2018, he became a pacer for the first time, leading a group of runners towards a goal time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. “I want to help others achieve goals.” Li Jun said. Since then, he has continued to serve as a pacer in many marathons.
Pacers are the real heroes of the marathon. They teach us that with courage and support, everyone can overcome (克服) challenges and reach their dreams.

Books Build Bridges
In a small village far from the city, children had very few books to read. Their school library was almost empty. A group of students from a city middle school learned about this and decided to take action. They started a book drive called “Pages of Friendship”.
First, they made posters and gave speeches in their school to encourage donations. They collected used books from their own homes, classmates, and neighbours. Then they put them into different groups: storybooks for primary students, science and history books for older children, and colorful picture books for the youngest readers. After that, they worked with their teachers to contact the village school and plan how to send the books.
Every month, they carefully packed and sent a box of 50 books. To make the connection more meaningful, they also started writing letters to the village children, sharing good books and their own school life stories. The village children wrote back with drawings and their thoughts about the books, expressing their excitement and thankfulness. One wrote, “These books are like windows to a bigger world that I’ve never seen before.”

Do you do the same thing every Saturday? Do your homework, play some games, watch TV? It sounds nice, but it can get boring, right? You can try something different. More and more teenagers are choosing to do volunteer work in their free time.
Volunteering means offering to do something without expecting any payment. There are lots of ways you can volunteer, including raising money for charity (慈善机构); helping in a park; or even carrying someone’s shopping home. Volunteering not only helps others, it also has advantages for your own well-being.
Volunteering can lower stress and make you feel better about your life. It also teaches you some important skills, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and task planning. You will need these skills in your workplace when you grow up. Many teenagers offer to teach and say that they have found the job they wanted to do all their lives. Volunteering has other advantages too, such as improving self-confidence and making friends.
So, what could you do?
There are many ways to volunteer. Think about what you like as well as what you would like to try. If you love sports, you can help coach younger players. If you want to protect the environment, then join a litter-picking group. Many teenagers happily spend many hours helping at an animal shelter near their home. Eve, aged seventeen, helped out at a food bank near her home. She said giving food to people who were less lucky made her feel happy and proud.
Don’t forget that you already have lots of knowledge (知识), skills and energy that could be really useful to the team you volunteer with. Organizations (组织) report that teenagers bring new ideas and help them do things that would be impossible without young volunteers. You can get a lot out of volunteering, and you have a lot to give, too. So why not give it a try?

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, has made waves (引起轰动) with a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20th, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign at five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico to remove trash (清除垃圾).
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.”
In 2012, Ryan Hickman started to pick up the trash around the beaches. Ever since then, he and some volunteers have collected about 2 million bottles and cans (金属罐) from beaches, lakes and rivers.
From a young age, Hickman had developed a love for recycling and had always liked trash trucks. He put the two interests together and began collecting recyclables (可回收物) to raise money. Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Hickman has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board (登船) the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s influence.

Last year, I left my job and went to work without pay in the rainforest. So many people have said to me, “I would love to do something like that.” And I say, “If you want to, just do it.” They always reply, “I cannot.” But, if you really want to do it, there are ways to make it happen.
After three days’ training, I started work on an environmental project with a group of young people. The living place was very basic and we had to build our own place to sleep. This included a simple bed, a cloth roof and a net to keep insects out.
It was never dangerous there, but it was very challenging. There were things that we didn’t think we would manage to do, but we did. I had some of my worst moments there, but also some of my best—it made me feel alive. I didn’t miss my home as much as I thought. We had food, water, somewhere to stay, about three sets of clothes and really good friends. We were in the most beautiful place and we had things to keep us busy. We didn’t need any more.
One of the volunteers said, “Before we came here, it was really important to me what clothes I wore and who my friends were. I was always thinking about shoes, but really none of that matters. Here, people accept me for who I am, what I believe and think, not for what kind of clothes I’ve got.” What she said truly came from the bottom of my heart.

The “Go West” programme is a voluntary service programme which sends college graduates (毕业生) to work in less developed areas in China for 1 to 3 years. This national programme covers education, medical care, farming technology and so on. Many areas have benefited from the programme since it started in 2003, and Sheyit is among them.
Sheyit Primary School is a faraway village school in Xinjiang. Thanks to the “Go West” programme, many young graduates have arrived here to help. Although they come from different places across China, they all share the same wish: to bring hope and knowledge to the children and lead them to a brighter future in this way.
Those volunteer teachers at Sheyit Primary School devote (奉献) themselves fully to teaching the children and taking good care of them. They set clear rules in class and expect students to finish homework on time. They find that many parents are busy herding (放牧) animals and have little time to help their children with homework. The teachers work extra (额外的) hours so that they can help the students with their study. “This is where I find the true meaning of my life,” a volunteer teacher here said. “When I see my students grow through my lessons, their progress becomes my honour.”
The students also greatly treasure their teachers’ teaching and care. They describe their teachers as being like the sun. They love going to school so much that some even come on weekends to study! Now all of them dream big and study hard towards their dreams.
“When active students meet hard-working and caring teachers, improvement is only a matter of time. Our school is no longer the worst in the city,” said Jin Wenbin, the leader of Sheyit Primary School. Since 2023, the school has produced many graduates who have done very well in local exams and got into top middle schools in Xinjiang.

For most people, having things stolen feels like a wrong act. Robbie Pruitt admitted (承认) that he got mad when he found out someone took his mountain bike in September, 2019. But soon enough, his feelings changed. After letting go of his anger and sadness, he began to feel sorry for the thief instead.
For Pruitt, a keen bicyclist, the first thing to do was replace his stolen bike. But when he went bike shopping, he found few available, which got him thinking: What if many people were buying bikes because buses weren’t running normally, and what if the person who’d taken his bike really needed transportation to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted (发帖) it on the community website. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. He also asked for unwanted bikes, which he would repair—again for free. And then he would donate them to folks who could truly use them but didn’t have the money to buy one.
As soon as the post was published, Pruitt received thirty used bicycles. Then came more than 500 requests for detailed information. By the end of 2020, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 for donation or to be returned to their owners.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to families that are truly struggling. He doesn’t just provide bikes—he also helps kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-worth, and promote feelings of community. Meanwhile, the kids have gained a sense of accomplishment.
“It’s a really great experience for kids,” said a neighbor in an interview with the local newspaper. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service but it’s not just the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he can make on people.”
1.When did Pruitt find out someone took his mountain bike?
2.Where did Pruitt post his bike repair plan?
3.How many used bicycles did Pruitt receive right after his post?

It is cold today. But Tim is excited. He will go to a party at the community centre. Today is the last day of a volunteer programme at the community centre. Tim joined it six months ago.
When Tim was a kid, he loved learning new things. He would watch movies, read books and try new activities. He was very happy. But as he grew up, life got busier, and he spent less and less time learning new things. Later, he was bored with his life and wanted something new again.
One day, he learned that some volunteers at his community centre were teaching people how to cook, paint, play instruments… He decided to join the volunteer programme. When he arrived at the community centre, he met a group of people. They were also there for training. Tim felt happy.
The first few days were hard. Tim had to learn new ideas and use unfamiliar tools or instruments. But he kept learning and slowly understood those things.
As he trained, he noticed the changes in his life. He not only learned new skills but also made friends with those in the programme.
Time flies. The volunteer programme is coming to an end. Tim and his friends decided to have a party to celebrate and thank their teachers. They are all looking forward to the party.

1.What are marathon pacers also called?
2.How many pacers are there in a marathon?
3.How do pacers give runners support during the hardest part of the race?
4.What does the writer think of being a pacer in Paragraph 4?
5.Why did Li Jun decide to be a marathon pacer?
The project not only provided books for children, but also built a bridge of friendship between city and village students, showing how simple actions can connect young hearts across long distances.
1.What was the village school library like?
2.Why did the students make posters and give speeches?
3.What kind of books may older children prefer to read?
4.How did the students communicate with village children?
5.What did the students get from the project?

1.What does volunteering mean?
2.According to the passage, what skills will you need in your future workplace?
3.How did Eve feel about her volunteer work?
4.If possible, what volunteer work would you like to do? Why? (Give at least two reasons.)

In 2017, Hickman gave away a $10, 000 (about 72,000 yuan) check to the PMMC after picking up 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles.
“It’s fun,”he said.“The people I talk to may encourage them, and they might organize a cleanup, too.”

2.What did the author do before she started on an environmental project?

1.How does the programme help these less developed areas in China?
2.How long has the “Go West” programme been in service?
3.Why do volunteer teachers at Sheyit Primary School work extra hours?
4.According to Jin Wenbin, what is the reason for the school’s improvement?
5.If you plan to join this programme in the future, what will you do to help the students?

Forget Me Not Cafe
Alzheimer’s patients (阿兹海默症患者) forget many things in their lives. Some of them can’t even take care of themselves. It seems that no company wants to hire (雇用) these patients and society has”forgotten” about them. However, a restaurant in Shanghai invites these patients to work there. And it has a beautiful name: Forget Me Not Cafe. In this restaurant, six of the waiters and waitresses have Alzheimer’s disease. Every day before work, a group of volunteers retrain (再培训) them on how to take orders and serve the dishes. The volunteers also mark the name of each dish with a number. In this way, these waiters and waitresses can remember the orders more easily.
These people may not work as fast as other servers, but they always try to do their best. “The volunteers take good care of us. And the customers are very nice and understanding,” said one of them. “I’m happy and confident here!”
Working at this restaurant provides these patients with a good chance to connect with society. This can help to slow down the worsening (恶化) of their disease. But most Alzheimer’s patients don’t have that chance. According to a recent report, more than ten million people in China have this disease. The restaurant hopes to bring more attention to this group. Alzheimer may make people forget, but _________.
1.Do Alzheimer’s patients forget many things in their lives?
2.How many people with Alzheimer’s disease work as waiters and waitresses at Forget Me Not Cafe?
3.Why does this restaurant hire Alzheimer’s patients? (Write at least two points.)

Do you often help people who are in need?
One day, two boys were walking along the road to school when they saw an old woman carrying a large basket of pears. The old woman looked very tired. They went up to her and said, “Are you going to town? If you are, we’ll help you carry your basket. ” “Thank you,” said the woman. “That’s very kind of you. ” Then she told them that she was going to the market to sell the pears. So the boys decided to lift the basket together. They walked slowly with the heavy basket, but they were very happy.
The other day, I saw a little girl pick up a piece of banana peel. She threw it into the dustbin(垃圾箱). “I hope nobody would throw that on the street,” she said. “Someone may slip (滑倒) and fall. ”
Perhaps some people may say that these are not great things. That’s right. But almost all great things are made up of such small things. We shouldn’t wait for the time to do great things. We should begin with these small things that are full of love.

3.Why was the old woman going to the market?
