Key West’s Most Loving Remembrance to Papa Hemingway
Experience the event
Held annually in sunny Key West, the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest celebrates Ernest Hemingway’s life in Key West in a way that’s as unique and spirited as the man himself. This event isn’t just for Hemingway enthusiasts or look-alikes; it’s a gathering that invites all to enjoy the energy of Key West. Whether you are a literature fan, a Hemingway admirer, or just searching for a good time, the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest is an experience you won’t want to miss.
Details of the Look-Alike Contest
When signing up for the contest, please indicate whether you will compete in the first round on Thursday or Friday. Contestants each will have 15 seconds to speak to the judges and the audience. If wearing a hat, the contestants will be asked to remove it so that judges will be able to see their faces.
Judging is handled by former Look-Alike winners, whom we call Papas. They are looking for someone who looks like Ernest Hemingway — a mature, heavy-set man with a full beard — someone who will return each year to judge the contest, and someone with good moral character to represent the Hemingway Look-Alike Society.
About 24 contestants will be chosen from all the contestants to advance to the final round on Saturday, when they will be called up on stage and given one minute to present themselves to the judges. The title of Papa 2026 will be awarded from this group.

Animals tend to be our favorite mirror of choice. The book Think Like a Horse by Grant Golliher, a horse trainer, opens with a brief scene from his adolescence in western Colorado where his father raised mules on a ranch (牧场). Tasked with training the baby mules, he was expected to rely on “force, fear, intimidation (恐吓)” Conventional wisdom though it was, it didn’t sit quite right with the young Golliher.
At nineteen, the cowboy landed a job of training horses for polo (马球). Before long, however, he’d grown dissatisfied and started to notice how the job brought out cruelty in him. Profit motives pushed him to train horses quickly. Then he hoped for a more enlightened way forward.
Luckily, years prior, Golliher had read Ray Hunt’s Think Harmony With Horses, but lacked the experience, environment, and mentorship to apply the wisdoms, Under the guidance of Hunt, Golliher enjoyed the space and opportunity to explore more subtle, emotional, and mutually respectful relationships with the horses under his care. It was during the time that his philosophy and practice came to a fuller expression: trust, patience, firmness, kindness, and respect. And it has made a consistent and positive effect on both horses and humans.
Later on, Golliher opened his own workshop on the Diamond Cross Ranch which has become a pilgrimage site attracting people. The healing and transformation experienced by countless participants there support what he stands for: the art of living an honest existence with oneself and one’s environment.
Golliher uses the horse as a mirror through which we come to see ourselves more clearly. The increase in self-awareness then becomes the basis for building more actionable empathy. In a society so thoroughly separated from the natural, we long to rediscover some lost essence of our humanity. Through the training of horses, Grant Golliher helps humans gain a deeper understanding of themselves, get along well with others, find their proper place in society and nature, and ultimately become a better version of themselves.
24.What displeased young Golliher in the beginning?
A.Busy business on the horse ranch. B.Hard farm work in Colorado.
C.Rough ways to train young mules. D.Father’s strict attitude to him.
25.Why did the job of training horses for polo make Golliher cruel?
A.He was pressured by making money.
B.He was interested in doing business.
C.He was disappointed with the old wisdom.
D.He was dissatisfied with his boss
26.Why were people attracted to Golliher’s workshop on The Diamond Cross Ranch?
A.To learn horsemanship. B.To go green.
C.To acquire polo skills. D.To live true
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Valuable Skills of Training Horses B.Self-reflection Through Horses
C.Exceptional Experience On The Ranch D.Healing Power Of Nature Around Us

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are among the most biodiverse and ecologically vital ecosystems on Earth, yet they face severe threats from climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, and overfishing. As reef decline accelerates, restoration efforts have expanded dramatically, including the use of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing to create heat-resistant corals. Yet a key challenge remains: once these modified corals are released into the ocean, how can researchers track them over multiple generations and space to assess the true impact of restoration?
The research team, led by scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Western Australia, have developed a pioneering new method — a combination of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, allowing for individual-level identification over multiple generations.
The scientists used CRISPR-Cas9 to place unique, heritable genetic barcodes into the DNA of corals. These barcodes are stable, and do not disturb normal biological functions. Each edited coral carries a distinct genetic marker that can be passed down to its young for multiple generations. The key innovation is the ability to detect these genetic markers using eDNA — small amounts of DNA left behind by organisms in their surrounding environment. By sampling seawater near restored reefs, researchers can identify specific barcode-carrying corals without disturbing the reef itself.
In field trials on the Great Barrier Reef, the team successfully tracked 200 barcode-edited corals for 18months. They detected the spread of young corals over several kilometers and confirmed that they had produced new corals into a second generation.“For the first time, we can accurately measure survival, reproduction, and connectivity in restored coral populations — critical data for making conservation efforts more effective,”said lead author Max Moonier.
While the results are promising, researchers emphasize that careful risk assessments will be necessary before widespread application. Future work will evaluate potential interactions between edited and wild corals, ensure no unintended ecological consequences, and improve methods for broader application across coral species. Ultimately, this approach provides a critical step toward effective coral reef restoration in an era of rapid climate change. The approach provides an example showing that precisely monitoring restoration outcomes is achievable, with broad use across species and ecosystems.
28.What did the research team’s method mainly solve?
A.Increasing coral populations. B.Editing coral genes to resist heat.
C.Collecting eDNA from ocean water. D.Tracking modified corals in the wild.
29.What does the term “genetic barcodes” refer to in paragraph 3?
A.Disturbing changes to corals’ DNA.
B.Unique eDNA collected from seawater.
C.Harmless markers put into corals’ DNA.
D.Modified genes added to improve corals.
30.How do researchers monitor edited corals using eDNA?
A.By attaching physical labels to corals.
B.By analyzing corals’ genetic structures.
C.By catching and testing individual corals.
D.By testing seawater to spot marked corals.
31.What can be inferred about the future of the technology?
A.It will stop reef decline worldwide. B.It may be used in other ecosystems.
C.It has no potential risks to ecosystems. D.It could replace traditional restoration methods.

Scientists recently have developed a theoretical model examining whether disturbances in the ionosphere (电离层) could apply electrostatic (静电) forces deep within the Earth’s outer layer. Under certain conditions, these forces might contribute to the start of large earthquakes.
The research is not designed to predict earthquakes. Instead, it outlines a possible physical mechanism showing how shifts in ionospheric charge levels caused by intense solar activity such as solar flares — might interact with already weakened areas of the outer layer and influence how cracks develop.
In this model, cracked regions of the outer layer are thought to contain water at extremely high temperatures and pressures, possibly in a supercritical (超临界的) state. Electrically, these cracked zones may act like capacitors (电容器). They are coupled (连接) both to the Earth’s surface and to the lower ionosphere, creating a vast electrostatic system that links the ground to the upper atmosphere.
When solar activity rises quickly, the number of electrons (电子) in the ionosphere can rise significantly. This can produce a negatively charged layer in the lower ionosphere. Through electrical coupling, that charge may generate intense electric fields inside tiny spaces within cracked rock. The resulting static electric pressure could approach levels similar to tidal or gravitational stresses that are already known to influence crack line stability. According to the team’s calculations, ionospheric disturbances tied to major solar flares might create static electric pressures of several units of pressure within these tiny spaces.
Unusual ionospheric behavior has often been detected before powerful earthquakes. Traditionally, scientists have interpreted it as effects caused by stress building up inside the outer layer. This new framework offers an additional perspective. It suggests a two-way interaction in which processes inside the Earth can influence the ionosphere, while ionospheric disturbances may also send feedback forces back down into the outer layer. The model connects space weather and earthquake activity without claiming that solar activity directly causes earthquakes.
The findings indicate that tracking ionospheric conditions alongside underground measurements could improve understanding of how earthquakes begin and how earthquake risk is assessed. Future work will determine when and how ionospheric disturbances might exert meaningful static electric effects on the Earth’s outer layer.
32.What is the main purpose of the research?
A.To predict earthquake timing.
B.To show solar flares cause earthquakes.
C.To measure electrostatic forces in Earth’s out layer.
D.To describe a link between ionospheric shifts and earthquakes.
33.How do electric fields form in cracked rock according to the model?
A.Solar flares are the only source of such fields.
B.Solar activity directly creates them in all cracks.
C.They occur regardless of ionospheric conditions.
D.They arise from coupling of ionospheric charge and cracked zones.
34.What did the traditional view of pre-earthquake ionospheric changes miss?
A.They might cause earthquakes.
B.They were based on the new model.
C.The ionosphere could also affect the surface.
D.The two-way interaction was fully explained.
35.How does the author present the argument?
A.By listing experimental data.
B.By tracing the research history.
C.By quoting experts on earthquake prediction.
D.By proposing a new idea and making comparisons.

In China’s journey to become a manufacturing powerhouse, the spirit of craftsmanship shines. Take the engineers behind the Tiangong space station, for instance — they spent years perfecting docking parts with millimeter accuracy. High-speed rail workers test each component repeatedly until failure is virtually impossible, while deep-sea equipment designers insist on flawless welding (焊接). It is, for them, a belief and pursuit of excellence. 36
No wonder behind every great achievement lies the spirit of craftsmanship: focus, responsibility, dedication, and meticulousness (细致). 37 Machines can work with high consistency, but humans are irreplaceable in ultra-precise high-tech fields like semiconductor production, where even a tiny flaw can ruin a whole batch of chips. 38 In aerospace and medical devices, human judgment spots unpredictable problems that machines cannot. That is why skilled workers remain the core of innovation.
How can one develop such a mindset? 39 Much like a master watchmaker perfecting a watch repeatedly, modern professionals must keep refining their skills. They should treat every imperfection as a chance to improve, not a reason to stop. After all, craftsmanship is not built in a day. 40 Only by pursuing lifelong learning and constant self-development can they adapt to ever-advancing technology. Thus, in the world’s most advanced industries, the delicate cooperation between humans and machines will give birth to products that are safe, reliable and truly world-class, fully demonstrating the enduring power of craftsmanship.
A.With such skills and care, progress continues.
B.These are things that machines cannot replace.
C.Instead, it grows through small, steady improvements.
D.This is not the only case where human expertise matters.
E.It represents a mindset of precision, patience, and dedication.
F.Such demands not only technical skill but also great patience.
G.It is fostered through persistent practice and unceasing refinement.

In a workshop in Yingshan County, central China, German scholar Fabian Schrodt carefully pressed paper onto inked clay (黏土) blocks, 56 (recreate) an 11th-century invention from ancient China — Bi Sheng’s movable type printing.
His hands-on experience at the Bi Sheng Memorial Hall brought to life the ingenuity of the Song Dynasty inventor, Bi Sheng’s clay-type system, which predated (早于) German printer Johannes Gutenberg’s metal press 57 about 400 years, 58 (recognize) as the earliest recorded movable type printing in human history.
Thousands of miles away in Mainz, Germany, visitors to the Gutenberg Museum have also encountered a similar sense of historic 59 (innovate).
While Gutenberg’s 15th-century metal type printing press famously 60 (revolutionize) Europe, Ulf Sölter, director of Mainz’s Gutenberg Museum, acknowledges an 61 (early) pioneer. “Bi and Gutenberg’s inventions were conceptually similar — namely, breaking down individual works into their individual components — but Bi came up with 62 idea long before Gutenberg,” said Sölter.
For Schrodt, who spent an afternoon learning from Wang Kui — an intangible cultural inheritor of Bi’s movable type printing — such preservation is extremely 63 (value). “Technological advancements can lead to the degradation (退化) of collective knowledge,” Schrodt noted. “Wang’s dedication to 64 (preserve) Bi’s legacy serves a crucial purpose: ensuring that humanity does not reach a point 65 we possess the technology for interstellar travel but cannot rebuild it once lost, simply because no one knows how.”

Helen Williams was a teacher of literature and writing. Every day after school, she would stay late and prepare for the next day’s class. One day, Helen stayed so late that she missed the last bus and had to walk home. On her way back, she met an old man selling some children’s storybooks. She was curious and picked up one.
“Are all these children’s stories? Why are there no extra copies of them?” she humbly asked the old man. The old man introduced himself as Rowan and said he wrote them. “I had worked in a publishing house but it was shut down years ago, so I was out of work.”
Helen was fascinated by the man’s dedication to writing. “I want to buy some books from you,” Helen told Rowan. Rowan was delighted as not many people were interested in even stopping by on this crowded sidewalk. He gave Helen a book along with his address. “You can come to my place for more!”
That evening, Helen was carried away by Rowan’s stories. She couldn’t wait to meet the old man because she wanted more books. The next day after school, Helen hurried to Rowan’s address and was surprised to see an abandoned house.
Helen couldn’t believe her eyes. Rowan lived in an old house near an old factory shut down decades ago. As Helen entered it, she noticed it wasn’t furnished except for an old bed, plenty of carton boxes with papers and books ready for binding. She looked around for the old man and found him in front of an old typewriter.
“Welcome to my little nest,” Rowan greeted Helen warmly, who felt sorry for him and determined he deserved recognition. During their conversation, Helen learned that Rowan had stuck to his writing dream for decades. Even after losing his job and living in poverty, he continued to create children’s stories every day. Deeply touched by Rowan’s firm passion for writing, she resolved to help make his talent seen by more people.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

30.How do researchers monitor edited corals using eDNA?
A.By attaching physical labels to corals.
B.By analyzing corals’ genetic structures.
C.By catching and testing individual corals.
D.By testing seawater to spot marked corals.

A. discount折扣;B. mistake错误;C. bonus奖金;D. detail细节。
A. mean意味着;B. save节省;C. offer提供;D. reveal揭示。根据上文“Like most people, I had to run phone marathons in my life.”
A. card卡片;B. note便条;C. bill账单;D. guidebook指南。
A. work through逐步处理、逐一完成;B. complain about抱怨;C. break down分解;D. apply for申请。根据句意以及上文“This led me to the automated phone system with the endless options”可知,自动电话系统会提供无数个选项菜单,用户需要一个一个逐步听完并选择。

A. fixed固定;B. widened加宽;C. opened打开;D. rolled滚动。

56.recreating 57.by 58.was recognized 59.innovation 60.revolutionized 61.earlier 62.the 63.valuable 64.preserving 65.where
固定搭配dedication to doing sth.

One possible version
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
With World Health Day drawing near, a truth deserves our attention: health is not merely the absence of disease, but a dynamic balance between a strong body and a positive mind.
To maintain physical health, we ought to work out regularly, such as playing ball games, and keep a balanced diet rather than eat junk food. As for mental health, it is advisable to stay optimistic and share feelings with parents or friends when facing difficulties.
Only by combining physical exercise with mental relaxation can we stay energetic and embrace a brighter future.
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
With World Health Day approaching, we should reflect on what health truly means. In fact, physical and mental health are equally vital and closely connected: a strong body contributes to a positive mind, while a healthy mindset in turn boosts physical well-being.
Simple daily habits can help us strike a balance between the two. Regular exercise—even a 20-minute jog—can refresh both body and mind. Besides, quality sleep effectively relieves physical tiredness and regulates our mood. And a balanced, nutritious diet matters too.
Never forget health always comes first. Let’s act now!

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Back at home, Helen took action immediately. First, she shared Rowan’s delicate stories with her literature students. The kids were deeply fascinated by the touching plots and pure language, and they all hoped to read more of his works. Next, Helen carefully sorted and organized Rowan’s scattered manuscripts, revising minor details to make the stories more fluent. She actively contacted local publishers and cultural platforms, sincerely introducing Rowan’s experiences and the unique value of his creations. She also posted parts of his stories on social media, which soon received widespread attention and favorable reviews.
Before long, a publishing house contacted Rowan. They spoke highly of Rowan’s gentle writing style and heartfelt content, formally deciding to publish his complete story collection. Upon release, the books gained great popularity among children and parents alike, earning countless positive comments. Rowan earned a steady income and moved into a bright, comfortable new house, completely saying goodbye to his lonely and tough days in the shabby old one. It was Helen’s selfless help that lit up his late years and rewarded his long years of persistence. True kindness is always powerful, which can discover hidden brilliance and warm every persistent dream.
