Interview with Kellen McMahan, Age 9, who set up “Kellen’s Campaign for Belonging”
Kellen, what made you start this campaign (运动) and how did you begin?
Kellen: It all started when I saw a classmate sitting alone after class. I realized how important it is for everyone to feel included. First I talked to my parents and teacher, because when you have a good idea, adults can help make it happen. We started small by
making “You Belong Here!” buttons (徽章) with my class.
How did you make and pass the buttons onto your whole school?
Kellen: My classmates and I designed colorful paper circles with good messages. We used a special machine to turn them into real buttons—over 400 of them! Then we visited every classroom to hand them out. It took a lot of work, but seeing everyone’s smiles made it meaningful.
▲
Kellen: I see kids wearing the buttons every day, and teachers say students are being more inclusive. The best part is noticing classmates who used to play alone now joining in games. One boy told me his button reminds (提醒) him he’s important when he’s feeling shy.
What’s next for your campaign?
Kellen: We’re planning a “Buddy Bench” for the playground where kids can meet new friends. This experience taught me that kindness can spread—when you help one person feel included, it spreads to others. Everyone is special and they should feel like they are not alone.

What is the far side of the moon like? Dark, cold and empty. But it will soon have a visitor—China’s Chang’e 6 probe (探测器).
The Chang’e 6 probe will be the first in the world to take stone and soil samples from the moon’s far side. The probe was launched successfully from Hainan on May 3.
Humans have done 10 missions (任务) to the moon to bring back moon samples, including China’s Chang’e 5 mission in 2020. However, all these missions so far have visited the side of the moon that faces Earth.
Because the moon turns at the same speed as it circles Earth, we can never see the far side of the moon. This makes it hard to stay in contact with any spacecraft that goes there.
To help the Chang’e 6 space probe “talk” to Earth, China sent a new relay satellite (中继卫星) called Queqiao 2 into space to travel around the moon, helping send messages back.
The Chang’e 6 probe also has new smart tools to help it collect samples better. “Even if the probe loses contact with Earth, it can do important work by itself,” Wang Qiong, deputy chief designer of the Chang’e 6 mission.
The Chang’e 6 mission to the moon will take 53 days. During this time, the probe will go into orbit (轨道) around the moon and land in a place called the South Pole-Aitken Basin. It is a huge crater (撞击坑) on the far side of the moon. There, it will collect up to 2 kilograms of stone and soil to bring back to Earth. Scientists will study these samples to learn more about the moon.
24.How is Chang’e 6’s mission different from other missions before it?
A.People can see where the probe works from Earth.
B.The mission will start from the moon’s near side.
C.The probe will bring back stone and soil samples.
D.The probe will work on the far side of the moon.
25.What is the role of Queqiao 2?
A.Sending the Chang’e 6 probe into orbit.
B.Moving between Earth and the moon.
C.Acting as a bridge between Earth and Chang’e 6.
D.Helping people on Earth talk on the phone better.
26.Why is challenging (挑战性) to communicate with a spacecraft on the far side of the moon?
A.The far side is always dark and cold.
B.The far side is out of sight from Earth, making communication difficult.
C.The Chang’e 6 probe does not have the necessary communication tools.
D.The South Pole-Aitken Basin blocks (阻碍) communication signals.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The Chang’e 6 mission will last over two months.
B.Astronauts will collect 2 kilograms of moon samples.
C.The Chang’e 6 mission makes a great achievement in lunar exploration (探索).
D.The Chang’e 6 probe completely depends on people’s control.

More and more people choose paid study rooms with cute tables and chairs, green plants, pretty walls and quiet computer keyboards. To build a friendly learning environment, some rooms have low light to help people focus on (专注于) their work. Some places have sunrooms and learners can enjoy beautiful nature from large windows. The workers will tell people to keep quiet in the study areas.
“We hope to offer a perfect learning place to people who want to study.” said Wang Yi, founder (创始人) of a 24-hour paid study room. “Over the past six months, the number of people coming was much bigger than we first thought, so we are now looking for new places.”
Feng Jia comes to the paid study room every day to prepare for exams. “There are not enough seats in public libraries. Also, there are many people talking or walking around.” he said. At home, it is even harder to focus because of phones, snacks and pets.
While many people welcome the paid study rooms, others are afraid that these rooms will replace libraries. Xu Qiang, director of the Shanghai Library’s reader service centre believes that public libraries and paid study rooms are satisfying the different needs of people. “People come to public libraries for the large number of books, while they go to the study rooms for the learning environment.” said Xu.
28.What will Wang Yi probably do in the future?
A.To make study rooms clean for readers.
B.To add more books in paid study rooms.

D.To ask people to study in public libraries.

In our culture, the ability to make one’s own decisions is important. John F. Kennedy’s quote (引语) “Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” shows an unpleasant truth.
Much of what we know and believe has been taught to us by others, and we often accept this information without spending much time thinking it over for ourselves.
In today’s world, we are being presented with information, ideas and beliefs, but many of them are against each other. Psychology (心理学) tells us that if we hear an idea enough times, or if it comes from someone we respect (尊敬), we will probably believe that idea. In these cases, we base our opinions on the opinions of others. If each of us does not think about this information for ourselves and come to our own conclusions (结论), we will become nothing more than parrots (鹦鹉) qu oting the opinions of others.
Examples of spreading fake news without thought can be seen on the Internet. Some people believe whatever they read and then share the story without thinking about the facts. All it takes is one quick click (点击) of the “share” button, and the story travels on its way to influence even more unthinking readers. This can cause serious problems.
If we just stop for a moment to think about what we read and hear, and form our own opinions, we will be more thoughtful, more independent, and more creative people, but few take that time. Yet we need not lose heart over this bad habit. In fact, simply becoming aware (意识到) of it is the first step towards correcting it. Once we become aware that we tend (趋向) to hold opinions and beliefs without thinking them through, we can change that pattern of behavior. Hopefully, we can learn to experience and enjoy the “discomfort of thought” and form our own opinions.
32.Where can we find the passage?
A.In a book about history. B.In a book about sports.
C.In a book about education. D.In a book about languages.
33.What does the underlined word “fake” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Untrue. B.Unusual. C.Unfair. D.Unhappy.
34.How can we have our own opinions according to the passage?
A.By spreading the information we receive.
B.By thinking about what we read and hear.
C.By quoting others’ opinions like parrots.
D.By learning more about psychology.
35.What’s the purpose of this passage?
A.To describe how Internet news spreads.
B.To explain why people don’t have their own opinions.
C.To warn people not to believe other people’s ideas.
D.To tell people that they should have their own thoughts.

Chinese people have been celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries. Mooncakes have the shape of a full moon on mid-autumn night. They carry people’s wishes to the families they love and miss.
There are many traditional folk stories about this festival. However, most people think that the story of Chang’e is the most touching. Chang’e was Hou Yi’s beautiful wife. After Hou Yi shot down the nine suns, a goddess gave him a magic medicine to thank him. Whoever drank this could live forever, and Hou Yi planned to drink it with Chang’e. However, a bad man, Feng Meng, tried to steal the medicine when Hou Yi was not at home. Chang’e refused to give it to him and drank it all. She became very light and flew up to the moon. Hou Yi was so sad that he called out her name to moon every night. One night, he found that the moon was so bright and round that he could see his wife there. He quickly laid out her favorite fruits and desserts in the garden. How he wished that Chang’e could come back!
After this, people started the tradition of admiring the moon and sharing mooncakes with their families.

【答案】例文
A Warm Moment with My Parent(s)
Good morning, everyone!
There are a lot of warm moments between my parents and me. One warm moment I’ll never forget happened last winter.
One night, I caught a bad cold and had a high fever. My mom stayed by my bed the whole time, putting a cool towel on my forehead and feeding me medicine. When I woke up the next morning, she was still there, looking tired but smiling. That made me feel so loved.
To get along well with our parents, I think we should talk to them often. Share our happiness and worries, and listen to their advice. Also, a simple “thank you” can make them happy.
Let’s cherish every moment with our parents. Thank you!
