Symbolically, it washes away the previous year so people can get ready for the next one Therefore, many Songkran traditions are associated with water, such as cleaning homes and pouring water on Buddha statues and the hands of elders. Outside, Songkran is celebrated with street parties and a friendly water fight. In 2023, it began on April 13. Holi Known as the festival of colors, Holi is celebrated on the last full moon in the lunar month of Phalguna. This ancient tradition marks the end of winter and honors the victory of good over bad. Celebrators light big fires, throw colorful powder called gulal at each other, eat sweets, and dance to traditional folk music. The annual Hindu celebration was held on March 8, 2023. Some kids also receive baskets filled with goodies, and many families have big feasts. In 2023, Easter was celebrated on Sunday, April 9. Passover Passover is a time to reflect on Jews’ suffering in ancient Egypt. Jews were believed to have been led to freedom by a religious leader named Moses. I had got into trouble in his class: Another student had pushed me into a wood lathe, and I became angry and began to hit him. Mr. Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office, he sat me down and asked a simple question, “Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren’t you going to college?” I knew nothing about colleges. I had never considered a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch, he stayed and explained possible education choices to me. At the end of our talk, he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School. Well, 53 years have passed. I gained a doctor’s degree. I taught English and social studies. And I moved up from teacher to headmaster. I’ve won a number of educational awards now. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me? It was without question only his confidence in me that propelled me forward. I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters. If I have saved any children, it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr. Bachmann. 4. But its long length of service also makes it extremely difficult to break down or be recycled into new products. Therefore, many tons of polyurethane plastics end up in waste fields, where they pile up for decades, harming the health of wild animals and humans alike. For most creatures, the build-up of polyurethane plastics means only bad news. But at least one of Earth's organisms sees them as a favor: a kind of bacterium called Pseudomonas sp. TDA1 that appears to love eating some parts of this kind of plastics. This organism seems to grow well in waste fields. Other plastic-chewing bacteria have been discovered before, but each seems to have their own taste in types of chemicals they prefer to break down. Pseudomonas sp. TDA1 is one of only a few organisms known to be tolerant to the plastics' typically poisonous characters. What's more, the bacterium doesn’t just survive the plastics' unpleasant ingredients (成分): It uses some of them as a food source. " While there is still much work to be done, this is exciting and necessary research that shows the power of valuable biocatalysts (生物催化剂) found in nature," John McGeehan, the director of the Centre for Enzyme Innovation said. "Understanding and using such natural processes will open the door for new recycling solutions. " Mass microbial (微生物的) clean-ups of plastics aren't necessarily possible in our future, however. The bacterium doesn’t seem able to break down these products completely. But the study " author Hermann J. Heipieper hopes that in-depth studies of Pseudomonas sp. TDA1 will uncover the genes crucial to these plastic-attacking abilities. Understanding how these genes and their products work could help scientists engineer environmentally-friendly approaches to handling plastics in the future. In the meantime, Heipieper stresses the importance of not worsening the plastic issue. As he tells The Guardian9 ”The main message should be to avoid using plastics which are later thrown into the environment in the first place." 8. What do we learn about polyurethane from Paragraph 1? A. Its recycling takes decades. B. It is not commonly seen in life. C. It is not mass-produced in many industries. D. Its durability makes it a double-edged sword. 9. Why did Pseudomonas sp. TDA1 draw scientists' attention? A. Because it makes plastics less poisonous. B. Because it feeds on polyurethane plastics. C. Because it has a special taste for chemicals. D. Because it removes plastics' unpleasant ingredients. 10. What do John McGeehan's words in Paragraph 4 mainly reflect? A. The breakthrough in plastic recycling. B. The process of developing biocatalysts. C. The reliability of new recycling solutions. D. The significance of recycling used things. 11. What's Heipieper's recommended way of handling plastic pollution? A. Recycling plastics in a green way. B. Finding more valuable biocatalysts. C. Using fewer plastics in our daily life. D. Setting up strict standards for producing plastics. D Migratory (迁徙的) birds are declining globally because of the way that humans have changed the landscape over recent decades — according to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA). A new study published today reveals that population declines have been greatest among species that migrate to areas with more human infrastructure — roads, buildings, power lines, wind turbines (涡轮机) — as well as more population and hunting levels. Dr. James Gilroy, from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said, “We know that migratory birds are in greater decline than non-migratory species, but it’s not clear why. We want to find out where in their life cycles these migratory species are most exposed to human impacts.” The research team identified 16 human-induced threats to migratory birds, including infrastructure associated with bird disturbance and impacts, transformation of land from natural habitat to human land use, and climate change. Advances in satellite imagery allowed the team to map each of the 16 threats across Europe, Africa and Western Asia. The team also created the first ever large-scale map of hunting pressure across the region. A total of 103 species of migrating birds were studied, including many rapidly declining species like the turtle dove and the common cuckoo, using large-scale datasets. The team calculated threat scores for factors such as habitat loss and climate change, across breeding locations, as well as non-breeding ranges. They then explored the relationships between these threat scores and bird population trends calculated from 1985 to 2018 by the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS). Dr. Aldina Franco, also from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said, “Our findings are important because we need to understand where declining species are being most impacted by humans across their seasonal migrations. Locating where birds are most exposed to these threats could help us target conservation actions.” 12. What causes migratory birds to decrease? A. A longer migratory route. B. Serious industrial pollution. C. Illegal hunting from humans. D. The changing of landscape. 13. What does the underlined word “infrastructure” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Basic systems and services. B. Local transportation. C. Internet facilities. D. Power supplies. 14. What does paragraph 4 talk about? A. The results of the study. B. The promise of the study. C. The process of the study. D. The database of the study. 15. What is the purpose of studying migratory birds according to Dr. Aldina Franco? A. To raise people’s awareness of protecting birds. B. To offer advice to do conservation work precisely. C. To stress the necessity of increasing bird population. D. To state the importance of living in harmony with nature. If you are thinking about redecorating your home, you are probably searching for decoration ideas. It was without question only his confidence in me that propelled me forward. I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters. If I have saved any children, it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr. Bachmann. 4. What can we learn about the author when he was a child? A. He was from a happy family. B. He was punished by the teacher. C. He was the poorest in his class. D. He was not confident at first. 5. What does the underlined word “propelled” probably mean? A. Put. B. Delivered. C. Pushed. D. Called. 6. Which can best describe Mr. Bachmann? A. Honest and patient. B. Kind and humorous. C. Brave and wise. D. Caring and responsible. 7. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text? A. To show his thanks. B. To show his confidence. C. To repay the kindness. D. To encourage young people. D 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第三段中“I knew nothing about colleges. I had never considered a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. 划线词所在句的前一句“But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me? Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office, he sat me down and asked a simple question, “Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren’t you going to college?” 和第三段中“That day, instead of rushing off for lunch, he stayed and explained possible education choices to me. At the end of our talk, he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. 通读全文,尤其是第一段“My wood-shop teacher, Mr. August J. Bachmann, was the most important teacher I ever had. (我的木工课老师August J. Bachmann先生是我遇到的最重要的老师)”和最后一段中“If I have saved any children, it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr. Bachmann. 故选A项。 C Polyurethane(聚氨酯)'s durability (耐久性) has made it a desirable material in many industries that depend on its flexibility and light weight to mass-produce things. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中的“Polyurethane (聚氨酯)'s durability (耐久性) has made it a desirable material in many industries that depend on its flexibility and light weight to mass-produce things. But its long length of service also makes it extremely difficult to break down or be recycled into new products. 根据第二段中的“But at least one of Earth's organisms sees them as a favor: a kind of bacterium called Pseudomonas sp. TDA1 that appears to love eating some parts of this kind of plastics.(但是至少有一种地球上的生物认为它们是有利的:一种叫做Pseudomonas sp. TDA1的细菌。这种细菌似乎喜欢吃这种塑料的某些部分)”及第三段中的“It uses some of them as a food source.(它还将其中一些成分用作食物来源)”中的eating和food source可知,这种细菌食用聚氨酯塑料。 根据第四段中John McGeehan 的话“Understanding and using such natural processes will open the door for new recycling solutions.(理解和利用这些自然过程将为新的回收解决方案打开大门)”可知,John McGeehan认为该项研究在塑料回收方面有很大的突破。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“The main message should be to avoid using plastics which are later thrown into the environment in the first place.(主要的信息应该是从一开始就应该避免使用塑料,因为这些塑料后来会被扔到环境中)”中的avoid using plastics可知,Heipieper建议人们要尽量减少使用塑料制品。故选C项。 D Migratory (迁徙的) birds are declining globally because of the way that humans have changed the landscape over recent decades — according to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA). 12. D 13. A 14. C 15. She rarely spoke up in class and often found herself feeling invisible. One day, her teacher announced a school talent show. Jenny loved singing but had never sung in front of anyone except her family. The idea of performing in front of the whole school terrified her. That evening, Jenny told her mom about the talent show. “I think you should participate,” her mom said gently. “But I’m too scared,” Jenny replied. “What if I make a mistake and everyone laughs at me?” Her mom thought for a moment and then handed Jenny a small, beautiful necklace. “This belonged to your grandmother,” she said. “She wore it whenever she felt nervous or scared. It gave her the courage to face her fear. Maybe it can do the same for you.” Jenny decided to give it a try. Over the next few weeks, she practiced singing every day, wearing the necklace for courage. She still felt nervous, but the thought of her grandmother’s strength helped her push through her fear. On the day of the talent show, Jenny’s heart was pounding as she stood backstage. She could hear the audience talking and laughing, and her legs felt like jelly (果冻). But then she touched the necklace and took a deep breath. She walked onto the stage, the bright lights making it hard to see the crowd, and began to sing. As Jenny sang, she felt her confidence growing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the performance, Jenny felt a rush of emotions. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 As Jenny sang, she felt her confidence growing. The initial tremble in her voice disappeared, replaced by a clear and strong sound. She focused on the melody and the words, letting herself get lost in the music. The audience became silent, and she could feel their attention on her, not with judgment, but with appreciation. By the time she finished, there was a moment of silence followed by a burst of applause. Jenny felt a warmth in her chest, a mix of relief and pride. She had done it; she had faced her fear. After the performance, Jenny felt a rush of emotions. Backstage, her mom was waiting with a big smile and open arms. “You were amazing, Jenny!” she exclaimed, hugging her tightly. “I knew you could do it.” Jenny smiled, feeling tears of joy in her eyes. “I did it, Mom. I really did it,” she said, holding the necklace. From that day on, Jenny felt more confident and willing to try new things. She realized that facing her fear wasn’t as scary as she had imagined, especially with the memory of her grandmother’s courage close to her heart. 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:finish/complete ②集中:focus on/concentrate on ③拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 ①高兴:joy/happiness ②可怕:scary/frightening 【点睛】[高分句型1] By the time she finished, there was a moment of silence followed by a burst of applause.
