In 2026,our school held a "Dream Career &Growth Story"sharing meeting.Three
students shared their experiences of chasing career dreams and overcoming growing pains.
Zhao Yan,14:"My dream is to be a doctor. My grandmother was seriously ill last year,
and the doctors saved her life.Since then,I've wanted to help sick people. But my growing pain
is that I'm afraid of seeing blood. To get over this,I started reading medical books and watching
educational videos about medicine.I also volunteered at a community clinic to get used to
medical scenes. Now,I'm not afraid anymore. My gain is that I've learned to be brave and
responsible.”
Li Ming,13:"I want to be a teacher.I love working with children and sharing knowledge.
But I'm very shy-I can't even answer questions in class. My English teacher suggested I join
the debate club.At first,I was nervous, but I kept practicing. Now,I can speak in front of the
whole school.I've gained confidence and communication skills.I know that being a teacher
requires courage to speak, and I'm getting closer to my dream."
Chen Xi,14:"My dream is to be a painter.I love drawing, but my parents didn't support
me at first. They thought drawing would affectmy study. This was my biggest growing pain.I
talked to my parents seriously, showing them my paintings and promising to balance study and
drawing.I made a schedule to finish homework first and then draw for 30 minutes every day.
Gradually,my parents saw my progress in both study and drawing, and they started to support
me.My gain is that I've learned to communicate with others and keep my promises."
All three students agreed that growing pains are necessary for growth. They encourage
every teenager to hold onto their dreams and face difficulties bravely.

How long does a year last?1 But your parents might say that a whole year can pass"in

the blink of an eye".Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?
According to scientists from Duke University in the USA,our brains become weak and
change over time.2 Babies, for example, move their eyes much more often than adults
because they're processing what they see faster. They take in a lot of information and do many
things in one day. This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time.3 So older
people receive less information during a day than younger people. This causes things to seem as
though they're happening more quickly.
Peoplemay also“feel”time differently for psychological(心a理的)reasons.4 Have you
ever noticed that when you recall()your firsts(the first day of school, the first family
vacation, the first birthday party, etc),they seem to slow down a lot? That's because when
something is a "first",there are many exciting things to remember.Recalling these memories
makes you feel like they took forever.
For many adults, life is normal. When they look back, they might feel like there are not
many new things to remember. So time seems to be moving faster to them.
A.Children might say that a year lasts forever.
B.The third thing you can do is spend time in nature.
C.People may tell time by the number of unforgettable events.
D.This change causes the ability to take in and process new information to go down.
E.However,as people's brains degrade()over time,less information will be processed
in the same period of time.

What comes to your mind when you think of cicadas()?Maybe all the noise they make on
hot summer days. But do you know that cicadas only spend a small part of their lives in trees?
They spend most of their lives underground. Some cicadas even spend 17 years under the
ground!Let's take a look at cicadas'life cycle.
Just before female()cicadas die, they lay their eggs in trees. One cicada lays about 400
eggs.Six to ten weeks later, the baby cicadas come out of the eggs, fall to the ground and dig
holes deep underground.Small and wingless, they're known as nymphs().Depending on
their kinds, most nymphs spend 13 to 17 years in these holes. But many of them may be eaten
by birds and snakes. Now you understand why female cicadas lay so many eggs. They need to
make sure enough nymphs live, even if many get eaten.
Finally, the nymphs come up to the top of the ground. Then they climb onto a nearby
plant, becoming adult cicadas.Adult cicadas have big bodies and four clear wings. These adults
live for about two months,so they have enough time to find a partner. This is when we hear
cicadas'loud sounds.Male()cicadas make these sounds to find a partner. They die soon
after pairing up,while females die after they lay their eggs. And then the life cycle begins again.

Wang Qian was a lovely girl, who never argued (with her parents. But when she
became an eighth-grader,things started to change."We often argue, sometimes because of
unimportant things,"she said.
Maybe Wang has got the“eighth-grade syndrome(综合征)”.Some experts think eighth-
graders usually suffer a lot because of the changes in their body and mind. The lack()of
support is also a possible reason.Wang's classmate Liu Shijia is an example."The exams in
Grade 8 are more difficult, but my parents still don't support me,she said sadly.
As eighth-graders enter the rebellious phase(叛逆期),they want to be free and have their
own ideas. The survey shows that eighth-graders may try to persuade()their parents when
they have different ideas.Wang feels this deeply. She thinks there is nothing wrong with playing
with boys, but her parents don't agree with her. They often argue about this.
To deal with these problems,an expert from Jiangsu gives useful advice to eighth-graders.
"First, calm down and pay more attention to your studies.Second, develop some interests and
share them with your parents. Finally, learn about your changes and know yourself well. Then
try to accept them,"she said.
