By far the most powerful and frightening earthquake I have ever lived through was the one that struck my city, Kobe, on January 16, 1995. My son’s family and I lived in a small house. When the earthquake began, it was only 5:46 a.m. We were all sleeping. I was thrown from my bed onto the floor. The amount of movement in our home was incredible. The door near where I was standing was swinging back and forth. I listened helplessly while just about everything standing in our home fell over. Loose objects were tossed across rooms, while the shaking continued. The noise was incredibly loud. When the earthquake finally stopped, I hurried to my son’s room, where he, his wife and their children were sleeping. Then when we looked around our home, it had been heavily damaged. The roof had fallen in. In the kitchen, most of the dishes lay in small pieces all across the floor. Outside, we saw our neighbors’ houses had fallen down, too. People were standing near their houses, and everyone looked shocked and frightened. Although we were all safe and no one had been hurt, we were still very affected by a terrible fear. It was a terrifying experience that we worry may happen again. In the meantime, we were all beginning to try to rebuild our homes and our lives. We love our beautiful city of Kobe and do not want to leave it. (Now listen again, please.) Questions: 1. What is NOT mentioned in this passage? 2. The tower is being broken up into pieces to be used for building a barrier as protection against flooding where the river runs through Central Park. For more than 40 years, the old tower next to the sports center stored water for use on campus. But its capacity of only 150,000 gallons was not enough for the university’s expanding needs. The new tower, which is near the international student center, has a capacity of 250,000 gallons. It also has a reservoir of 500,000 gallons. Furthermore, it is on slightly higher ground to provide better pressure for the increasing number of high-rise buildings on campus. (Now listen again, please.) Questions: 1. He succeeded in persuading me to join him on his trip to the Rocky Mountains. This was my first time in the mountains, so I was turning my head in all directions. Unluckily, the weather was foggy most of the time, and the higher we climbed the mountains, the less we could see. But I still enjoyed the hike. I walked fast, and because of that I ran out of energy long before we got to the top. Adam knew how to save energy. When we finally got to the top, nothing had really changed. The same fog was covering everything. I felt disappointed, as I expected to see the view from above and take some photos. We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back. Then the wind suddenly cleared the clouds and the sun came out. It wasn’t until then that I knew how beautiful the mountains looked. And for some moments I couldn’t believe my eyes. This experience inspired me to break through my limitations and accept new challenges. I realized that I wouldn't be able to live a life without visiting the mountains at least twice a year. 56.What a person did the author use to be before his first hike to the Rocky Mountains? Marinoni from the University of Cambridge and his co-workers saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data center has been increasing and is likely to “explode” in the coming years, and they decided to measure the impact. The researchers have taken satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates (坐标) of more than 8,400 AI data centers. Recognizing that the rise in surface temperatures could also be due to other influencers, the researchers chose to focus their research on data centers located away from heavily populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2℃ in the months after an AI data center started operations. In the most extreme cases, the increase in temperature was 9.1℃. The effect wasn’t limited to the data centers’ immediate surroundings — the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometers away. Seven kilometers away, there was only a 30percent reduction in the intensity (强度). “The results were quite surprising,” says Marinoni. “This. could become a huge problem.” Studying population data, the researchers discovered that more than 340 million people live within10 kilometers of data centers, where temperatures are higher than they would be if the data centers hadn’t been built there. Areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and Aragon province in Spain saw a 2℃ increase in temperature over the 20 years between 2004 and 2024, which couldn’t otherwise be explained. Marinoni says, “The message I would like to deliver is simple: Be careful about designing and developing data centers.” 59.What is a data center heat island? A.A region where temperatures rise quickly. B.A problem that data centers waste much energy. C.A distant island that has seen large crowds of tourists. D.A situation where the land around data centers gets warmer. 60.What did Marinoni and his team aim to do? A.Reduce data centers’ energy need. B.Find out data centers’ effect on temperature. C.Compare the data centers in different regions. D.Explain the reason for rising global temperatures. 61.Why did the researchers focus on data centers in less populated areas? A.To make it easier to collect data. B.To raise the correctness of the findings. C.To protect the people living in those areas. D.To cut down the cost of satellite measurements. 62.What can we learn about the data center heat island? A.It will disappear in the near future. B.It has already influenced large populations. C.It is the main reason for global temperature rise. D.It has no connection with the design of data centers. 【答案】59.D 60.B 61.B 62.B 【导语】文章主要介绍了AI数据中心产生的热量对周边地表温度的影响及其相关研究发现。 【详解】59.细节理解题。根据第一段“Data (数据) centers built to power AI produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees, creating ‘data center heat islands’. (为AI提供动力的数据中心会产生大量热量,使周边地表温度升高数度,从而形成‘数据中心热岛’)”可知,数据中心热岛指的是数据中心周边土地变暖的现象。 60.细节理解题。根据第二段“Marinoni from the University of Cambridge and his co-workers saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data center has been increasing and is likely to “explode” in the coming years, and they decided to measure the impact. (剑桥大学的Marinoni及其同事注意到,运行数据中心所需的能量一直在增加,并可能在未来几年“激增”,因此他们决定测量其影响)”可知,Marinoni和他的团队旨在探究数据中心对温度的影响。 61.推理判断题。根据第三段“Recognizing that the rise in surface temperatures could also be due to other influencers, the researchers chose to focus their research on data centers located away from heavily populated areas. (研究人员意识到地表温度上升也可能受其他因素影响,因此选择重点研究位于人口稀少地区的数据中心)”可推知,他们这样做是为了排除其他因素的干扰,提高研究结果的准确性。 62.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Studying population data, the researchers discovered that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometers of data centers, where temperatures are higher than they would be if the data centers hadn’t been built there. (研究人员通过人口数据发现,超过3.4亿人居住在数据中心周边10公里范围内,这些地区的温度比未建设数据中心时更高)”可推知,数据中心热岛效应已经影响了大量人口。 C Holly, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane at JFK airport in New York City, feeling excited about her plan to spend a year studying abroad in Nancy, a city in northeast France. Within a few weeks of staying in France, though, her excitement was gone. Living in a new country was much harder than she had expected it to be, especially when it came to speaking French. Her accent (口音) was terrible and people could hardly understand her. One day, Holly’s mother called to tell her that the package she had mailed to her had arrived at the post office, so Holly happily went there. When she arrived, she tried to tell the worker why she was there. But the worker didn’t speak any English and couldn’t understand her accent when she spoke in French. The more she repeated herself, the more hopeless she felt. She was about to break down in tears because she just really needed that package from home. Just then, a French woman who introduced herself as Jouve came to her rescue. Jouve stepped in, looked at Holly and said in English, “Can I help you?” And she spoke to the worker. Within two minutes, the package was in Holly’s hands. After that, Jouve invited Holly to her house for dinner the following Sunday. “It became my habit to have dinner with Jouve and her family every Sunday. It was a safe place for me to practice my French without all those feelings from before.  I really felt like I was at home there. Ever since then, we have been keeping in touch with each other,” Holly said. “Her act of kindness has influenced my life in many ways — I tend to pay more attention to people who might be in trouble, and offer whatever I can to them. And I’m forever thankful for what Jouve did for me.” 63.How did Holly feel after living in Nancy for several weeks? A.Impatient. B.Discouraged. C.Relieved. D.Comfortable. 64.Why did Holly go to the post office? A.To pick up a package. B.To send a postcard. C.To practice speaking French. D.To contact her mother. 65.Which words can best describe Jouve? A.Strong-willed and curious. B.Good-natured and creative. C.Well-behaved and humorous. D.Warm-hearted and thoughtful. 66.What do Holly’s words in the last paragraph show? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Many drops make an ocean. C.Kindness leads to more kindness. D.True friendship stands the test of time. 根据第一段“Within a few weeks of staying in France, though, her excitement was gone. Living in a new country was much harder than she had expected it to be, especially when it came to speaking French.(然而,在法国待了仅仅几周之后,她的兴奋劲儿就消失了。在一个全新的国家生活要比她原本预想的要困难得多,尤其是在学习法语方面更是如此)”可知,霍利在纳西待了几个星期之后感觉沮丧。 64.细节理解题。根据第二段“One day, Holly’s mother called to tell her that the package she had mailed to her had arrived at the post office, so Holly happily went there.(一天,霍利的妈妈打电话告诉她,她寄给霍利的包裹已经到达邮局了,于是霍利兴高采烈地去了邮局)”可知,霍利去邮局是为了取一个包裹。 65.推理判断题。根据第三段“Just then, a French woman who introduced herself as Jouve came to her rescue. Jouve stepped in, looked at Holly and said in English, “Can I help you?” And she spoke to the worker. Within two minutes, the package was in Holly’s hands. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Why gratitude is good for you Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” to someone who has helped us or given us a gift. 67 And this positive emotion can be good for our health — our emotional and physical health, as well as the health of our relationships. Let’s start by looking at the emotional or mental health benefits of expressing gratitude. There have been many studies, as described in a 2018 paper from the Greater Good Science Center titled “The Science of Gratitude”, showing that writing a gratitude letter to another person or writing in a gratitude journal, if done regularly, improves mental health. One reason for this, is that gratitude stops us from reflecting on negative emotions. But even if we don’t share our writing with anyone, like in a journal, the act of completing the exercise alone makes us happier and more satisfied with life. 68 As we are essentially training our brain to be more in tune with noticing the positive, after several weeks or months, this becomes more intuitive. And so, the more we express gratitude, the more positive we feel. 69 There are studies linking a gratitude practice to better sleep quality, better eating habits, and reduced infection in people who have had heart problems. So gratitude is clearly good for us, but is it also good for the people in our lives? The simple answer is “yes”. When shared — spoken or written — gratitude is about feeling valued and helping others feel valued too. 70 And that’s on top of all the other ways gratitude is clearly good for us. Maybe we should all stop counting sheep or counting calories and start counting our blessings instead? A.Gratitude can also make us feel good physically. B.Therefore, it’s easy to tell that gratitude is advantageous to us. C.It is the feeling of being grateful and wanting to express our thanks. D.It can thus help promote stronger relationships with family, friends or even colleagues. E.And this positive feeling gets even better with time. F.It is a deeper appreciation for someone or something that makes us feel a positive emotion. 【答案】67.F 68.E 69.A 70.D 【导语】文章主要介绍感恩的内涵,分别阐述其对心理、身体及人际关系的多重益处,倡导常怀感恩。 【详解】67.上文“Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” to someone who has helped us or given us a gift.(感恩不仅仅是对帮助我们或送我们礼物的人说一句谢谢)”解释感恩不只是简单道谢。空后“And this positive emotion can be good for our health(这种积极情绪有益于我们的健康)”承接积极情绪带来的好处。空处需要进一步解释感恩的深层含义。选项F“It is a deeper appreciation for someone or something that makes us feel a positive emotion.(它是对人或事物更深层次的感激,能让我们产生积极情绪)”承接上文定义,引出后文积极情绪,衔接自然。 68.上文“But even if we don’t share our writing with anyone, like in a journal, the act of completing the exercise alone makes us happier and more satisfied with life.(但即便我们不将自己的作品分享给任何人,比如比如只是写在日记里,仅仅是独自完成这项练习,也会让我们感到更快乐,对生活也更有满足感)”说明感恩能带来好心情。空后“As we are essentially training our brain to be more in tune with noticing the positive, after several weeks or months, this becomes more intuitive.(随着我们训练大脑主动关注美好,一段时间后这种习惯会变得自然而然)”体现长期坚持的变化。空处表示这种美好感受会随时间越来越好。选项E“And this positive feeling gets even better with time.(这种积极的感受会随着时间推移变得越发强烈)”承上启下,符合语境。 69.上文整段讲述感恩对心理健康的好处。空后“There are studies linking a gratitude practice to better sleep quality, better eating habits, and reduced infection in people who have had heart problems.(有研究表明,养成感恩的习惯能够改善睡眠质量、优化饮食习惯,并且对于有过心脏病史的人群,还能降低感染风险)”开始介绍身体健康方面的益处。空处为段落总起句,引出身体层面的好处。选项A“Gratitude can also make us feel good physically.(感恩也能让我们的身体保持良好状态)”过渡自然,统领本段内容。 70.上文“When shared — spoken or written — gratitude is about feeling valued and helping others feel valued too.(无论是口头还是书面表达感恩,既能让自己被重视,也能让他人感受到被珍视)”说明分享感恩的作用。空后“And that’s on top of all the other ways gratitude is clearly good for us.(这也是感恩众多益处之外的又一大好处)”进一步提示空格处应该是感恩带来的好处。所以空处需要说明重视彼此带来的人际优势。选项D“It can thus help promote stronger relationships with family, friends or even colleagues.(因此它有助于拉近与家人、朋友乃至同事的关系)”承接前文,讲述感恩对人际关系的作用,符合语境。 IV. Summary (10%) Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Could pursuing meaning be the path to true happiness? There are some differences between a happy life and a meaningful life and the two are closely related. When we aim for a life of meaningful pursuit, we are likely to feel more lasting happiness and life satisfaction — even if there is some sadness, or stress along the way. People find meaning in life through “three pillars (支柱)” of meaning. When we are understood and recognized by friends, family members, partners, colleagues, and even strangers, we feel we belong to a community. Results from some studies indicate that many people count their relationships as the most meaningful part of their lives, even when those relationships are difficult. When we have long-term goals in life that reflect our values and serve the greater good, we tend to give our activities more meanings. Researcher Adam Grant has found that professions focused on helping others — teachers, surgeons, and therapists — all tend to be rated as more meaningful. Having purposed has also been tied to many positive outcomes, including more dedication to the jobs, increased learning and better health. When it comes to finding meaning, storytelling helps to try to pull particularly relevant experiences in our lives into a story that defines our identity. People who describe their lives as meaningful tend to have stories where they overcame something negative, and to stress growth and help from others. Laura Kray and colleagues found that people’s considering paths not taken in life and the consequences of those choices filled experiences with more meaning. Based on these factors, some practices could encourage meaning in your own life. For example, you may involve yourself in personal interactions and offer help to others when they need it to increase your sense of belonging. You may also want to redefine the tasks of your job to fit your motives, strengths, and enthusiasm. Or, if you feel stuck, you may want to spend time creating a storyline. By developing our relationships and serving others, we bring more meaning to our lives. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The goal to live meaningfully may give us a stronger feeling of well-being, compared with simply pursuing a life of pleasure. I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown without going anywhere. I thought there was no difference between seeing something on TV and seeing something with one’s own eyes. The situation changed one day when Adam, my best friend, came to my room. D.The heavy fog covering everything. 58.How did the author most probably feel after the hike? A.Disappointed. B.Comfortable. C.Encouraged. D.Confused. B Data (数据) centers built to power AI produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees, creating ‘data center heat islands’. C Holly, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane at JFK airport in New York City, feeling excited about her plan to spend a year studying abroad in Nancy, a city in northeast France. Section C (8%) Directions: Read the following passage. IV. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V. I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown without going anywhere. I thought there was no difference between seeing something on TV and seeing something with one’s own eyes. The situation changed one day when Adam, my best friend, came to my room. D.The heavy fog covering everything. 58.How did the author most probably feel after the hike? A.Disappointed. B.Comfortable. C.Encouraged. D.Confused. B Data (数据) centers built to power AI produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees, creating ‘data center heat islands’. C Holly, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane at JFK airport in New York City, feeling excited about her plan to spend a year studying abroad in Nancy, a city in northeast France. Section C (8%) Directions: Read the following passage. IV. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V.
