Joshua williams was five years old when something came into his heart that would change his life and the lives of thousands of others. His journey began with a $20 birthday gift from his grandmother. She said he could use it any way he wanted.
On his way to the mall that morning, the five-year-old began thinking about all the things he could buy with the money. Then, looking out of the car window, Joshua noticed a homeless man standing on the street corner. That moment changed his life forever. Joshua instantly gave the man his $20 bill in the hope that it would make a small difference.
With this gesture, Joshua discovered his life’s calling to help the needy. At just five years old, Joshua knew he would need help in order to make his dream — to wipe out hunger — a reality. He enlisted his family, and soon they were delivering meals to the homeless every Saturday. Joshua began to realize, however, that he needed a “bigger, better and easier way to distribute food.” He and his family came up with the idea to have the homeless community come to a centralized distribution point. On their first distribution day, Joshua and his team of helpers provided more than 300 families with food. They continued distributing groceries this way every month for two years.
With the success of his work, Joshua eventually created the Joshua’s Heart Foundation to continue his mission of feeding the homeless. Now, several years later, his foundation continues to provide food and cooking classes for needy families.
Joshua and his team have helped feed over 20,000 people over the past eight years and they’re still working to increase that number. Joshua instantly gave the man his $20 bill in the hope that it would make a small difference.(那天早上,在去购物中心的路上,五岁的孩子开始思考用这些钱能买到的所有东西。
根据上文“At just five years old, Joshua knew he would need help in order to make his dream — to wipe out hunger — a reality.(年仅五岁的约书亚就知道,为了实现他的梦想——消除饥饿——他需要帮助)”可知,他需要帮助。由此推知,划线句“He enlisted his family”意思是“他说服家人帮助他”,于是有了下文的“很快他们就开始每周六给无家可归的人送饭”。故选A。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“With the success of his work, Joshua eventually created the Joshua’s Heart Foundation to continue his mission of feeding the homeless.( 随着工作的成功,约书亚最终创建了约书亚之心基金会,继续他为无家可归者提供食物的使命) ”可知,约书亚之心基金会主要为有需要的人提供食物。故选D。
【45题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Joshua and his team have helped feed over 20,000 people over the past eight years and they’re still working to increase that number. (在过去的八年里,约书亚和他的团队已经为超过2万人提供了食物,他们仍在努力增加这个数字)”可推知,约书亚将来会帮助更多的人。故选C。
C
Animals might not be able to speak or master advanced language techniques, but they certainly have other ways of communicating. Whale song, wolf howls, frog cries — even the fast dance of the honeybee or the friendly waves of a dog’s tail — are among so many ways animals pass on information to each other and to other living things of the animal kingdom.
When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects. For example, one study shows that blue whales produce different types of sounds depending on where they are from. Some bird species are the same way. And what about those birds that live on the border between territories (领地) of different songbirds? They are often able to communicate in a way accepted by each of their groups of neighbors.
Communication between different species can play important roles as well. One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies. So when an iguana hears a bird make a signal of danger for other birds, it probably knows to be watchful for arriving enemies, too.
However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe, many animals are now under fire. Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin. Studies have found that songbirds, too, suffer from noisy city surroundings. Some species have had to change their singing styles, producing songs that sound louder, in order to be heard above the noise. Their new voices usually lead to stranger and somewhat worse styles of singing that female birds find decidedly less sexy.
46. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. Various dialects can also happen to the same animals.
B. Animals communicate with each other in different ways.
C. Different animals have different ways of communicating.
D. Animals from different places may make the same sound.
47. What can we learn about iguanas?
A. They communicate by singing.
B. They are born with poor hearing.
C. They often bring bad luck to humans.
D. They get along well with flycatchers.
48. By saying “many animals are now under fire”, the author means ________.
A. they refuse to communicate with others
B. they cannot communicate effectively
C. they are now in danger of dying out
D. they don’t make a sound any more
49. Due to noise pollution, songbirds ________.
A. find it hard to attract the opposite sex
B. produce more songs that sound sad
C. begin to communicate by dancing
D. can not find food easily any more
50. The author develops the passage mainly ________.
A. by raising questions
B. by following time order
C. by providing examples
D. by analyzing the data
【答案】46. A 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了动物之间也会交流,不管是同一种类动物内部还是不同种类动物之间都可能存在交流。
【46题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段前两句“When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects.(说到听觉交流,并非每个物种的成员都是一样的。不同地方的动物经常用不同的方言说话。)”可知,本段介绍即便是同物种直接也会存在方言。故选A。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies. So when an iguana hears a bird make a signal of danger for other birds, it probably knows to be watchful for arriving enemies, too.(一项研究表明,鬣蜥蜴并不通过发出声音来交流,但它们发育良好的耳朵帮助它们很好地听到捕蝇鸟(一种小型鸟类)的警告叫声。这两个物种除了共同的栖息地和天敌之外,没有任何共同之处。所以当鬣蜥蜴听到一只捕蝇鸟向其他捕蝇鸟发出危险的信号时,它也知道要警惕敌人的到来。)”可推断,这两种动物有共同天敌,故相处融洽。故选D。
【48题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前一句“However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe,(然而,随着噪音污染在全球范围内成为一个严重的问题)”以及下文所举例子“Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin.(在过去的一个世纪里,航运的增加极大地影响了海洋盆地周围鲸鱼歌声的传播。)”可知,噪音污染已经严重影响了动物之间有效的交流。所以many animals are now under fire意为“它们无法有效交流”之意。故选B。
【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Some species have had to change their singing styles, producing songs that sound louder, in order to be heard above the noise. Their new voices usually lead to stranger and somewhat worse styles of singing that female birds find decidedly less sexy.(一些物种不得不改变它们的唱歌方式,发出更响亮的声音,以便在噪音中被听到。它们的新声音通常会导致更陌生和更糟糕的歌唱风格,雌鸟肯定会觉得不那么性感。)”可知,由于噪音污染,雄鸟很难吸引雌鸟。故选A。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章内容,每一段都是先提出一个现象,然后再举例子来证明或说明这个现象,所以作者主要通过举例子来写文章。故选C。
D
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “hero”? Is it someone who wears a cape and can fly in the air? There are onscreen heroes like the superheroes in Avengers, and there are also everyday heroes in our lives.
Whether they are championship athletes, groundbreaking scientists, programmers changing the world with a keyboard, firefighters rushing into burning buildings, artists creating amazing images, or rescue dogs searching for signs of life, they can be described as “heroes”.
But what makes a person a hero?
In general, a hero is someone selfless, courageous and brave. These qualities drive heroes to help others in times of need, even if they are scared. You can count on them to be there for you if something bad happens.
“The people that we set up as heroes are people that generally go above and beyond the call of duty. They do things that are extraordinary,” said Nick Carden, a psychologist at the AAPHC Renaissance Center in the US.
However, why are some people heroic? Nick Carden said that heroes are made. “They probably are people that have been influenced by and have been helped by or have been modeled or raised to have those as values.”
Ordinary people — just like you and me — are heroes in their own way, simply just by doing their part for their families and communities. Cleaners, doctors, journalists, delivery workers, nurses, and bus drivers — the list goes on and on.
These ordinary people help keep order in our day-to-day lives. And, sometimes, when there are emergencies, these ordinary people show courage and bravery to help complete strangers in need.
Being a hero is a universal attribute (属性) of human nature. “The decision to act heroically is a choice that many of us will be called upon to make at some point in time.” “Heroism becomes something that seems in the range of possibilities for every person, perhaps inspiring more of us to answer that call,” heroism researchers Zeno Franco and Philip Zimbardo wrote in Greater Good Magazine.
Most importantly, you should try to become your own hero. Be courageous, honest, and a person with integrity, Once you are your own hero, you can truly do anything you set your mind to.
51. What is the function of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To present the argument.
C. To define the hero. D. To offer basic information.
52. According to paragraph 2, which CANNOT be considered a hero?
A. A guide dog accompanying its blind owner.
B. A painter creating artwork that is worth millions of dollars.
C. A programmer developing an algorithm which can increase working efficiency.
D. A scientist developing a new medicine that can cure a certain disease.
53. What is Nick Carden’s opinion about heroes?
A. They do brave and good things based on their responsibilities.
B. They are different from normal people because they possess extraordinary abilities.
C. They do great things to help others even if no one requires them to do so.
D. They can do great things that are beyond people’s expectations.
54. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Normal people who do their duty to their families or society are responsible.
B. Only the people who are born with the attribute of being a hero can be heroes.
C. As heroism is a quality rooted in human nature, everyone will help people in need.
D. When emergencies occur, the courage of ordinary people could be inspired.
55. What is the author most likely to talk about next?
A. Reasons why having integrity is important for our life.
B. The most important qualities of heroes.
C. Things we can do to become our own heroes.
D. Figures we can learn from to become heroes.
【答案】51. A 52. B 53. C 54. D 55. C

An 8-minute short video went viral on Chinese social media recently. The video begins with a man surnamed Zhao, who took his daughter to visit relatives in November 2019. After he finished eating at a restaurant and was ready to go home, he discovered he couldn’t find his little girl.
As people set out to look for her, someone soon discovered that the girl had fallen down an abandoned well at the restaurant. Zhao called for help and the local rescue departments as well as medical workers arrived at the scene in a short time. However, it was discovered that the diameter of the well was just 0.3 meters, far too small for rescue workers to enter.
Since no adults at the scene were thin enough to enter the well and pull the girl out, rescuers changed their strategy and brought in four excavators (挖掘机) to start digging, but they had to move slowly in order to avoid hurting the young girl.
Wang Qingjun, a member of the rescue team, suggested that the team allow his son, Wang Mingran, to try and enter the well. After learning the danger that the little girl was in, the teen boy left for the scene with his mom as quickly as he could.
One detail in the video that moved many netizens (网民) is when a rescue worker asks the younger Wang how old he is, he replies that he is 17 years old; but with a look from his mom, he immediately changes his answer to 15 and then looks down slightly embarrassed.
After confirming that Wang Mingran was healthy and that he could fit in the well, rescuers quickly showed him how to correctly tie the rescue rope around the girl and call for help if he gets in trouble. By that time, the girl had been trapped for four hours.
Wang dressed only in underwear was hung upside down and lowered into the well on that cold fall night. His first few attempts to rescue the girl failed, but he continued trying and on his sixth attempt he was able to successfully tie the rope around the girl’s body. After 30 minutes from his first attempt, the little girl was finally pulled to safety.

The final results of Best-Ever Teen Fiction vote are in. While it’s no surprise to see Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series on top, this year’s list also highlights some writers we weren’t as familiar with. For example, John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, appears five times in the top 100.
Summer, like youth, passes quickly. But the books we read when we’re young can stay with us for a lifetime. The following are the top 4 on the list. Enjoy.
1. Harry Potter series
The Harry Potter books make up the popular series written by J. K. Rowing. The series includes seven books. The books concern a wizard (魔法师) called Harry Potter and his journey through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The stories tell of him over coming dangerous obstacles to defeat the dark wizard Lord Voldemort who killed his parents when Harry was 15 months old.

Each bag of groceries represents a brighter day in the lives of these individuals and families, and it all began with one young person who saw a need and decided to make a difference.

47. What can we learn about iguanas?

49. Due to noise pollution, songbirds ________.
A. find it hard to attract the opposite sex
