Passage 1
(25-26九下·广东深圳罗湖·学业质量检测)Humans have been riding horses for over 4,000 years, building a very strong relationship. For a long time, people have believed that horses can smell fear and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horses calm. Recently, a team of researchers have found that horses can actually catch our hidden feelings just by smelling our sweat (汗液).
To test this idea, researchers invited 30 people to watch happy videos and scary movies. They collected the people’s sweat using pieces of cotton under their arms. Next, they divided 43 horses into three groups. The horses wore a special device (设备) over their noses and mouths. One group smelled the “happy” sweat, another smelled the “fear” sweat, and the third group smelled nothing.
The team then checked how the horses behaved when strange things happened, such as an umbrella being opened near them or seeing a strange object. The results were clear and surprising. Horses that smelled the “fear” sweat became much more afraid. Their hearts beat faster and they were also less curious about new things and less likely to go near humans.
“The fearful smells from humans make the horses’ reactions stronger,” the lead researcher Plotine Jardat explained. “The important thing is that horses know how we feel, even if they cannot see or hear us.”
The researchers hope this important study will help to improve animal health and keep riders safe. Stressed horses can be very dangerous because they might kick or run away suddenly. If we understand their feelings better, we can get on with these old friends more safely and positively in the future.
1.Why are horse riders usually told to relax according to Paragraph 1?
A.To build a better relationship. B.To prove that horses are smart. C.To help scientists collect sweat. D.To help their horses stay calm.
2.What was the main difference among the three groups of horses in the test?
A.The objects they saw. B.The smells they got. C.The devices they wore. D.The videos they watched.
3.How did the horses behave after smelling the “fear” sweat?
A.They showed less interest in new things. B.They tried to take off the special devices.
C.They ran away and kicked the researchers. D.They stopped listening to the riders’ orders.
4.What can we learn from Plotine Jardat’s words?
A.Fearful smells can make horses run faster. B.Horses’ smells will make humans feel afraid.
C.Horses can sense human feelings from sweat. D.Horses lose their hearing when feeling afraid.
5.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To tell the history of humans riding horses. B.To show the practical value of the new study.
C.To describe the dangers of riding stressed horses. D.To explain the importance of the horses’ feelings.
Passage 2
(25-26初三下·广东茂名·质量监测(二))For centuries, humans have used words and body movements to express their needs and ideas. Do animals also communicate with clear goals?
A new study shows that elephants can also use gestures (姿势) on purpose to tell what they want. Scientists studied 17 African elephants in a nature park in Zimbabwe. They gave the elephants two plates. One had six apples, and the other was empty. When the elephants saw the plates, they used clear gestures to ask for apples. If they only got one apple instead of six, they tried gestures—like hitting the ground with a stick or throwing sand—to ask for more. In total, scientists recorded 38 different kinds of gestures.
Think about the difference between moving your hand away from the fire without thinking, and pointing at the fire to warn a friend. That difference lies in “intentions”. Scientists divide intentions into three levels of difficulty. The zero level is to react (反应) to a direct feeling or touch, like moving away from pain. The first level is to influence others’ behavior for some result. For example, someone makes others do something for their need. The second level is to change others’ opinions. ▲ They used body movements to ask scientists to give them apples. Their movements were not by accident. They did these on purpose to get what they wanted.
This research suggests that the ability for purposeful communication may be more widespread across the animal kingdom than we thought.
1.Why does the writer ask a question in Paragraph 1?
A.To show his/her worry.
B.To lead in the new finding.
C.To explain the importance of communication.
D.To compare human words and animal sounds.
2.Which is the most probable gesture when an elephant wants more apples?
A. B. C. D.
3.What does the underlined word “intentions” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Aims. B.Records. C.Feelings. D.Benefits.
4.Which of the following can be put in“ ▲ ” in Paragraph 3?
A.Elephants were glad to see apples.
B.Elephants showed the first level.
C.Elephants understood humans’ thoughts.
D.Elephants’ sounds expressed their needs.
5.What is the best title (标题) for the text?
A.Why Humans Love Elephants
B.How to Save African Elephants
C.Elephant Talk: Purposeful Gestures
D.Elephant Life: Amazing in Zimbabwe
Passage 3
(2026·广东清远英德·适应性测试(二))Floods are a serious and growing problem around the world. They happen when too much water covers land. Each year, they bring great danger and damage to people’s lives and homes. Understanding this problem is the first step in finding solutions.
Floods are becoming more common. A big reason is that the Earth’s temperature is rising. Warmer air holds more water, leading to heavier rain and stronger storms. Another big reason is rising sea levels, which make coastal floods worse. Big waves push more water onto the land. Scientists say that by 2100, big floods that used to happen only once every 100 years may happen every year. Many cities could then be under great threat.
Floods create serious problems. According to a report, over 19 million people were forced to leave their homes in a single year because of flooding - that’s like moving almost the whole country of the Netherlands. Floods damage roads, bridges, and schools. After a flood, it can be hard to find food, and dirty water can spread illnesses.
▲ Early warning tools can tell people when floods are coming, giving them time to reach safety. Building sea walls can help stop floodwater. Experts are also creating “sponge cities” by building special streets and parks that take in rainwater. But in some places, the safest plan may be “managed movement”, which means moving people away from areas that flood repeatedly.
Floods are a big challenge. But if we work together and plan well, we can stay safe and protect our communities. By understanding the causes and taking action, we can make a real difference.
1.What causes floods according to the passage?
① Big waves. ② Earthquakes. ③ Rising sea levels. ④ The rising temperature.
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
2.What does the underlined word “threat” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Safety. B.Danger. C.Beauty. D.Wealth.
3.Why does the writer mention the Netherlands in Paragraph 3?
A.To help people understand the large number.
B.To explain why the country has serious floods.
C.To show how many people lost their homes in the country.
D.To give an example of a country that helps people in floods.
4.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A.So, what can we do?
B.So, how can we treat illnesses?
C.So, why should we use warning tools?
D.So, when should we begin to fight floods?
5.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Flood advice.
B.Sea Level Rise.
C.Sponge Cities.
D.Flood Problems and Solutions.
Passage 4
(2026·广东大湾区·初中学业水平质量监测(二))Polar bears mostly eat seals (海豹. They catch them by waiting on sea ice, near holes where seals come up to breathe. But climate change brings warmer weather to cold areas and causes sea ice to melt, so polar bears have less time and food for hunting. As hunting gets harder, bears lose weight and struggle (挣扎) to survive. In places such as Hudson Bay in Canada, many polar bears there have become thinner, and mother bears have fewer babies.
________ This place has warmed faster than nearly any other place in the Arctic, and its sea ice keeps shrinking rapidly. However, scientists have discovered adult polar bears in the Barents Sea area have grown heavier and healthier over time.
Researchers studied these bears from early 1992 to 2019. During this period, the number of ice-free days increased by about 100. At first, the bears’ body condition became worse. But around the year 2000, they slowly started to get more body fat, even though the ice conditions were getting worse. Scientists believe this is because these bears have been able to get used to changing conditions by spending more time on land, eating reindeer (麋鹿), bird eggs and dead animals.
But experts say that this does not mean climate change is no longer dangerous. The number of baby bears, the chance for their survival and future food may be continuously influenced as the Arctic gets warmer.
1.The writer uses the example of Hudson Bay to show _______.
A.bears’ new habit of hunting B.bears’ serious problems C.the life of baby bears D.differences among bears
2.Which of the following can be put in_______ in Paragraph 2?
A.Polar bears in Canada are good at living on land.

C.People have built many homes for polar bears around the world.
D.A surprising fact has been found in the Barents Sea area in Norway.
3.What does the underlined word “shrinking” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Growing colder. B.Growing smoother. C.Becoming smaller. D.Becoming harder.
4.Which picture probably shows the study of the bears in the Barents Sea area?
A. B. C. D.
5.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.New Food Choices of Polar Bears B.The Arctic Home of Polar Bears
C.No More Danger for Polar Bears in the Arctic D.Different Effects of Climate Change on Polar Bears

Passage 1
(2026·广东广雅中学·二模)Have you ever thought that a hobby like bird-watching could change your brain? Scientists have found that experienced birdwatchers develop brain differences that help them recognize birds quickly. This shows that bird-watching can change the functioning of the brain, just like learning a language or playing an instrument does.
When we learn or practice a new skill, our brain reorganizes itself, making certain pathways in our brain stronger and smoother. This ability is called neuroplasticity (神经可塑性). Some scientists have found that musicians have changes in the parts of the brain related to hearing, and athletes have changes in the parts related to body movement.
To see if bird-watching also changes the brain, a team of scientists at York University in Canada studied 48 birdwatchers. Half were experts, and half were beginners. Both groups were shown a picture of a bird for less than 4 seconds, and about 10 seconds later, they had to find the same bird among four similar-looking birds. The task was repeated 72 times.
As was expected, expert birders did much better. On average, they correctly recognized 83% of local birds and 61% of non-local birds. Beginners only got 44% correct for both kinds. Brain scans showed that, when recognizing birds, expert birders had more activity than beginners in brain areas related to object recognition, attention, and memory. This showed that continuous practice in bird-watching reshapes the brain.
The researchers said that other hobbies using similar skills, like attention and memory, might bring similar benefits. “If you’re not into birds, try learning to play the guitar. It may cause similar brain changes,” said Erik Wing, the lead scientist of the study.
1.In what way does the writer explain neuroplasticity in paragraph 2?
A.By listing numbers. B.By comparing two ideas.
C.By giving examples. D.By telling a personal story.
2.How did the scientists at York University carry out the study?
A.Scanned the brains of the birders and musicians.
B.Tested the birders' hearing and body movement.
C.Asked the birders to name 4 birds in 10 seconds.
D.Compared the birders' ability to recognize birds.
3.Why did Erik Wing mention playing the guitar in the last paragraph?
A.To encourage birdwatchers to play the guitar.
B.To suggest another hobby that improves the brain.
C.To let readers know guitar requires more attention.
D.To introduce only musical instruments as a better choice.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Bird-watching Can Reshape Your Brain
B.How Scientists Studied Birdwatchers
C.Bird-watching Improves Mental Health
D.The Secret to an Expert Birdwatcher

Passage 2
(2026·广东东莞·二模)Artwork is lovely to look at, and it has the power to make people feel and think differently. But do you know that when people see a real work of art, rather than just looking at a photo of it, they are likely to experience stronger feelings? Scientists recently carried out a study at the Mauritshuis museum, the home to Girl with a Pearl Earring (珍珠耳环), a very famous painting.
① The researchers watched how people reacted (反应) to several paintings. First, the volunteers were asked to look at the real paintings on show, and then at photos of the artworks in the museum shop. ② It was shown that their reactions were 10 times stronger when they looked at the real paintings.
③ How did that happen? Through study, people may experience something called the “sustained attentional cycle (持续注意力循环)”when they watch a certain painting. The volunteers’ attention was first drawn to the girl’s left eye, then to her mouth, and then to her pearl earring. This certain order of eye movements repeated in a cycle. Each time they completed the cycle, their focus became stronger and their connection with Girl with a Pearl Earring was deeper.
④ The director of the Mauritshuis, Martine Gosselink, said that the study shows how important it is to go and see art in real life, whether it’s paintings, photography or dancing. She added, “It really helps develop your brain.” The researchers now want to broaden their study, planning to visit other museums and do similar experiments on works like Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.
1.We can put the following sentence “The team also found that the group reacted even more strongly to Girl with a Pearl Earring.” in ______.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
2.How does the writer introduce the “sustained attentional cycle”?
A.By giving an example. B.By telling a story. C.By listing numbers. D.By offering advice.
3.Which one shows the relationship between the time people spend in watching the painting(x)and people’s focus(y)?
A. B. C. D.
4.What does the underlined word “broaden” mean?
A.Admire. B.Budget. C.Choose. D.Increase.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Power of Real Works of Art B.Lessons from Real Works of Art
C.The Way to Enjoy Real Works of Art D.A Visit to Real Works of Art
Passage 3
(2026·广东东莞光明中学·二模)Have you ever wondered what else you can do on the train besides sleeping or scrolling through your phone? Actually, in China, trains have turned into centers which bring together the public and the nation’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH,非物质文化遗产).
Trains go across China and they are becoming ideal places for introducing local traditional culture. A good example is the K7041 train from Harbin to Mohe in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. On the ICH train, Gulayier, dressed in traditional clothes, sang Oroqen folk songs and his partner played the Oroqen jaw harp, a musical instrument. Tourists on the train, especially those from southern China, sang and danced excitedly with the two performers together. Gulayier said the train made it easier to hold tourists’ attention to his shows. He thought the train was a good platform for promoting ICH.
Traditional heritage comes to life on trains. More ICH such as Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing, Yulin puppet shows, and tea-picking operas in Guangxi have also made appearances on high-speed trains across China. It offers passengers a close-up way to experience traditional culture.
Professor Xiao Fang from Beijing Normal University shares Gulayier’s opinion on the new use of ICH trains. He has pointed out another advantage of this. Beyond cultural promotion, it offers help for tourism. When passengers enjoy local traditions on board, they often develop a deeper interest in exploring the places they pass through.
However, the ICH train journeys still have challenges, including the narrow space on trains and passengers getting on and off at each station. Therefore, some solutions are coming up—cultural corners show traditional arts, and QR codes connect to more digital information. These help passengers to explore ICH at their own pace and continue learning after their journey ends.
The success of ICH trains offers valuable lessons for cultural protection worldwide, proving that innovation (创新) and tradition can work together to keep cultural heritage alive for future generations.
1.What is the fresh experience for passengers on the K7041 train?
A.Travelling farther north. B.Joining in live shows.
C.Wearing traditional clothes. D.Having fun on the phone.
2.What does the underlined word “platform” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.A special kind of train car for ICH shows.
B.A type of train ticket for cultural activities.
C.A raised surface for performers to stand on.
D.A place or opportunity to share and promote something.
3.What do Gulayier and Professor Xiao both agree on?
A.ICH encourages more local visits.
B.Trains help make ICH more popular.
C.ICH improves the Chinese train journeys.
D.Passengers welcome performers on ICH trains.
4.What does paragraph 5 mention about the ICH train journeys?
A.Their features and influence. B.Their reasons and results.
C.Their problems and methods. D.Their future and improvement.
5.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Trains push China’s intangible cultural heritage further.
B.China puts arms around local artists on ICH trains.
C.More ICH trains begin running on railways in China.
D.Train passengers share different local cultures of China.

Passage 1
(2026·广东佛山·模拟)Did you feel like yesterday passed a little faster? You might be correct. July 10th, 2025, was among the shortest days of the year—about 1.3 milliseconds shorter than a normal 24-hour day.
A day has 24 hours (or 86,400,000 milliseconds), the average time Earth takes to rotate (转动) once. ________ Some are a bit longer, others shorter.
For most of history, the rotation of the Earth has been used to measure time. But in the 1950s, scientists created special clocks to measure these “fast” or “slow” days. Recent years have seen many days shorter than 86,400,000 milliseconds: July 5, 2022, holds the record (1.65 milliseconds faster), followed by July 9, 2024 (1.36 milliseconds faster) and July 29, 2024 (1.34 milliseconds faster).
For over 50 years, the shortest days of each year fall in June, July, or August, while the longest usually appear between March and May (sometimes October or November). There are many reasons to influence the speed of the Earth’s rotation. And the most important one is the pull of gravity (引力) from the moon.
Though Earth has had fast days lately, over millions of years it has been slowing down: a day today is 1.7 milliseconds longer than a day a century ago, and on average, the day has been getting 2.3 milliseconds longer per century for thousands of years.
Whether today is shorter or longer, these seemingly tiny time changes are reshaping our understanding of what a “day” is.
So, if today is one of the shortest days of the year, have you made this special day meaningful for yourself?
1.Which of the following sentence can be put in ________?
A.The earth rotates around the sun.
B.Its rotation is why we have day and night.
C.However, not every day is exactly the same.
D.People recorded the time with different tools.
2.What does the underlined word “measure” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Tell the length of. B.Make use of.
C.Take back. D.Catch up on.
3.Which of the following picture show the correct length of day (LOD) in a year?
A. B.
C. D.
4.What does the writer want the readers to do in the last paragraph?
A.Buy a new clock. B.Value the special day.
C.List meaningful activities. D.Explain the earth’s rotation.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How Do We Tell the Time? B.Does Moon Control Days?
C.Are Days Getting Shorter? D.What Changes the Length of Day?
Passage 2
(2026·广东肇庆·二模)Did you know that dunes (沙丘) can move? This sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but it happens in real life. However, a new study from Nanjing University found that the dunes in western China’s deserts are moving more slowly now.
According to the study, dunes form in places with a lot of sand and little water. They change shape and move depending on how the wind blows.
The team studied dunes in western China’s desert using pictures from 1986 to 2021. Satellites (卫星) took these pictures from the sky. The team found that the moving speed of dunes has slowed down by 30 percent. In the area with the fastest fall, the speed dropped from about 9 meters each year to 4.5 meters each year. The main reason is that the wind is not as strong, so it carries less sand.
Why is the wind getting weaker? Scientists say that global warming is the main cause. As the Earth’s temperature rises, the temperature difference between the polar areas (极地地区) and the equator (赤道) becomes smaller. This makes the wind blow less strongly.
This finding supports the idea of “global wind stilling”. It means wind near the ground is slowing down worldwide. ▲ . As the slower wind takes away less sand, dust storms happen less often. This helps plants grow back in dry areas.
However, slower near-ground wind can also make wind power work less well. It may also make it harder for pollution to go away, said researchers from Nanjing University.
1.Why does the writer mention “a science fiction movie” in Paragraph 1?
A.To show that dunes-moving is a new idea.
B.To show that moving dunes seem unreal but are real.
C.To prove that dunes only move in science fiction movies.
D.To compare desert dunes with scenes in science fictions.
2.According to the study, what happened to the dune movement speed in the area with the fastest fall?
A.It stayed the same over 35 years.
B.It became 30% faster than before.
C.It increased from 4.5 to 9 meters per year.
D.It dropped from 9 to 4.5 meters per year.
3.What does the underlined word “stilling” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Turning around B.Moving fast C.Becoming weak D.Climbing up
4.Which of the following can be put in the “ ▲ ” in the passage?
A.This slowdown is bad news for all living things.
B.This change brings both good and bad effects.
C.This leads to less sand being carried by the wind.
D.This has already been proved by many studies.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Dunes Are Moving More Slowly B.Global Warming and Sandstorms
C.How Wind Shapes the Desert D.Ways to Protect the Environment

Passage 4
(2026·广东广宁·二模)Lots of dogs understand simple words said directly to them, such as walk or sit. But a new study shows that some “gifted” dogs can learn other words by “eavesdropping” on humans.
The researchers wanted to know if dogs could learn new words just by overhearing (偶然听到) their owners speak.
For the study, the researchers gave each dog two new toys. The dogs were allowed to play with the toys in their homes. The researchers then gave all dog owners a task. The owners were asked to talk with another person in their household, naming the two new toys while the dog was close by. (For example, “Look at this toy. This is Judy.” “Oh, Judy looks soft.”) After the conversation, the dog owners placed the new toys in a room with other toys. The owners then asked their dogs to get one of the new toys.
The dogs were able to pick out one of the new toys after overhearing their owners. During the study, these dogs had language-learning skills similar to those of 18-month-old human children.
“For some of the dogs, it was as if they had no doubt about what they were supposed to do,” a researcher said. “They would just go into the room, straight to the toy that they knew and then bring it back quickly.”
This study doesn’t apply to (适用于) all dogs. Only certain dogs, called “gifted word learners”, can learn new words by “eavesdropping”. Scientists aren’t sure why some dogs have this ability.
1.What does the underlined word “eavesdropping” most probably mean in the passage?
A.Copying. B.Overhearing. C.Supporting. D.Preventing.
2.Why are some dogs called the “gifted” dogs according to the passage?
A.Because these dogs are often given to others as gifts.
B.Because these dogs learned faster than human children.
C.Because their abilities come from special training methods.
D.Because they could correctly get the owners’ orders by overhearing.
3.What is the right order of the study?
①The owners asked dogs to get one toy.
②The dogs played with the toys in their homes.
③The dogs could pick out one of the new toys correctly.
④The researchers offered every dog two new toys.
⑤The owners named the two new toys while talking.
⑥The dog owners placed the new toys with other toys.
A.④②①③⑤⑥ B.④②⑤⑥①③ C.②⑤⑥④①③ D.②⑤①③④⑥
4.What can we know about the dogs from the researcher’s words in Paragraph 5?
A.They were supposed to enter the strange room quickly.
B.They could hardly find the toy without the help of humans.
C.They remembered how they had played with the toys before.
D.They knew exactly where the familiar toy was and brought it back fast.
5.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The ways to train dogs to recognize toys.
B.The different ideas about dogs’ abilities.
C.A study on dogs’ ability to learn words by eavesdropping.
D.The differences between dogs and children in language learning.
Passage 5
(25-26九下·广东深圳宝安·学情调研)In the middle of busy New York City, a tiny bird has become the latest feel-good star at Bryant Park. Amazingly, it has slowed down the rushing New Yorkers and brought them together.
This small and round bird is called the American Woodcock. It is drawing people’s attention with its special “dance”. When it walks, its body rocks back and forth (来回地), as if it is dancing to music only itself can hear. Many scientists guess this special movement can create small shakes in the soil, making earthworms move closer to the surface. Then it’s easy for the woodcock to pull them out with its long and strong beak (喙). At the same time, it may also be a warning to possible enemies.
Every day, many New Yorkers slow down to watch it right after work. They pull up chairs, take photos, or even copy its dance moves, while many others simply stand and smile — something that doesn’t always happen in a busy city like New York. People are happy to see the little bird after a long day, and it’s always relaxing to watch it dance. One visitor shared, “We just met and became friends when watching the bird.” Because of this tiny bird, strangers make friends.
In fact, the woodcock doesn’t appear in the city by chance. It is on its spring migration (迁徙) north. And Bryant Park is a good place for it to rest, eat worms and save energy.
More than just a cute visitor, this little bird has given New York, a fast and busy city, a valuable gift. It gives people a simple reason to stop hurrying, connect with others, and enjoy the beautiful moment in life.
1.What makes the tiny bird attractive?
A.Its beautiful singing. B.Its long and strong beak.
C.Its small and round body. D.Its special way of walking.
2.Why does the American Woodcock “dance” according to scientists?
A.To show off its beautiful body.
B.To celebrate its spring migration.
C.To get food and warn its enemies.
D.To scare people and save its friends.
3.What can we infer (推断) from paragraph 3?
A.New Yorkers are usually very relaxed after work.
B.New Yorkers are crazy about taking photos of birds.
C.The woodcock helps build a warmer social relationship.
D.The woodcock will be brought back to the visitors’ home.
4.What gift does the American Woodcock bring to New Yorkers?
A.A reason to get relaxed and enjoy life.
B.A way to do research on bird migration.
C.A skill to dance with strangers beautifully.
D.A chance to learn fashionable dance moves.
5.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.A Funny Bird Sings in Bryant Park B.A Dancing Bird Slows People Down
C.A Tiny Bird Teaches People to Dance D.A Cheerful Bird Migrates to the North

Passage 2
(2026·广东东莞·二模)In the southeast of the Tengger Desert in Ningxia, there is a new library. The three-storey library opened on June 8th in 2022 in the Shapotou desert tourist area in Zhongwei City. The chocolate-coloured building looks like a box with half of it in the desert. It brings knowledge to book lovers, tourists and architects (建筑师).
The library is also called “Lost Treasure Box”. According to Liu Huiling, a manager in the library, the name “Lost Treasure Box” was taken as the library lies at a place in which many important historical events took place. “With rich ‘memories’, it has a lot to be discovered and told,” Liu said.
With a collection of about 40,000 books, newspapers and magazines, the library is part of a desert culture and tourism project, which is supported by the local government. Lying between the Tengger Desert and the Yellow River, Zhongwei City has been making great work in recent years to develop its culture. “This is the first modern library ever built in the desert in China. Since it started serving the public 24 hours a day, it has won lots of good reviews,” said Liu.
The library also shows the harmony between the desert and human activities after years of anti-desertification (抗沙漠化) work.
Yang Fang, a visitor from Fujian Province, brought her 8-year-old daughter to the library. “With stars overhead at night, my daughter can enjoy sounds of the wind in the desert while reading,” she said.

2.第二段中提到“the name ‘Lost Treasure Box’ was taken as the library lies at a place in which many important historical events took place... it has a lot to be discovered and told”,这说明本段主要解释沙漠图书馆为什么被称为“遗失的宝盒”,所以选项C“Why the desert library is called ‘Lost Treasure Box’.”正确。
3.第三段中提到“the library is part of a desert culture and tourism project, which is supported by the local government”,说明当地政府对该项目是“支持”的,所以“supported”意为“帮助/支持”,选项D“Helped.”正确。

【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C 5.B
【导语】本文介绍了一项研究,发现马能通过人类的汗液感知情绪,并探讨了该研究对提升马术安全和动物健康的意义。
1.根据第一段“For a long time, people have believed that horses can smell fear and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horses calm.”可知,骑手被要求放松是为了让马保持冷静。
2.根据第二段“One group smelled the ‘happy’ sweat, another smelled the ‘fear’ sweat, and the third group smelled nothing.”可知,三组马的主要区别是接触的气味不同。
3.根据第三段“...they were also less curious about new things and less likely to go near humans.”可知,闻到恐惧汗液的马对新事物表现出更少的兴趣。
4.根据第四段“The important thing is that horses know how we feel, even if they cannot see or hear us.”可知,马能通过汗液感知人类的情绪。
5.根据最后一段“The researchers hope this important study will help to improve animal health and keep riders safe.”可知,最后一段主要说明了这项新研究的实际价值。
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.C
1.第二段提到:“If they only got one apple instead of six, they tried gestures—like hitting the ground with a stick or throwing sand—to ask for more.”,说明大象想要更多苹果时,会做出用棍子击打地面或扔沙子的动作,对应选项C的图片。

B.Scientists decided to help polar bears in danger at once.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.A 5.D
第一段提到“In places such as Hudson Bay in Canada, many polar bears there have become thinner, and mother bears have fewer babies.”,这是为了说明北极熊因气候变化面临的严重生存问题。
1.第二段空白处后提到“However, scientists have discovered adult polar bears in the Barents Sea area have grown heavier and healthier over time.”,这与前文提到的困境形成转折,因此空白处应引出巴伦支海的意外发现。
2.根据上下文“sea ice keeps shrinking rapidly”,结合前文“climate change brings warmer weather…causes sea ice to melt”,可推断“shrinking”意为“缩小、变小”。
3.第三段提到“During this period, the number of ice-free days increased by about 100. At first, the bears’ body condition became worse. But around the year 2000, they slowly started to get more body fat, even though the ice conditions were getting worse.”

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.A 4.D 5.A
【导语】本文围绕科学家在博物馆开展的研究展开,探讨人们观看真实艺术品时的感受,介绍“持续注意力循环”现象,强调亲临现场观看艺术作品对大脑发展的重要性,还提及研究团队计划拓展研究。

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.A 4.B 5.C
1.第三段第二句“scientists created special clocks to measure these ‘fast’ or ‘slow’ days.”,科学家发明了特殊的钟表来对快或慢的日子做measure这个动作,钟表的核心功能就是“计量、测定时间的长短”。所以measure在这里和A选项“测定……的长度(或时长)”同义。
2.第四段首句“...the shortest days of each year fall in June, July, or August, while the longest usually appear between March and May (sometimes October or November).”,最短的日子出现在 6、7、8 月,最长的出现在3-5月。曲线的路径应该是往下走的趋势,只有选项A的图片符合这种趋势。
3.最后一段“So, if today is one of the shortest days of the year, have you made this special day meaningful for yourself?”,如果今天是一年中最短的日子之一,你有没有让这个特别的日子变得有意义?
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.C 5.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了南京大学的一项研究:受全球变暖影响,中国西部沙漠的沙丘移动速度正在放缓。
【详解】95.结合第一段“Did you know that dunes (沙丘) can move? This sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but it happens in real life.”可知,作者提到科幻电影,是为了说明“沙丘会移动”这件事听起来像虚构的科幻情节,但在现实中真实存在,突出“看似不真实却真实发生”的特点。
1.结合第三段“In the area with the fastest fall, the speed dropped from about 9 meters each year to 4.5 meters each year.”可知,下降最快的区域,沙丘移动速度从每年约9米降至4.5米。
2.根据第五段“This finding supports the idea of ‘global wind stilling’. It means wind near the ground is slowing down worldwide.”可知,后文用“It means...”解释了“global wind stilling”的含义,即“近地面的风在全球范围内减弱”,因此“stilling”的意思是“变弱、减弱”。
3.根据第5段“It means wind near the ground is slowing down worldwide. ______. As the slower wind takes away less sand, dust storms happen less often.”
