“I’m so glad we’re finally leaving this miserable place,” Brianna said to her husband Tom. They were moving to Saturn since they had lived on Neptune long enough to know that this was not where they wanted their children to grow up.
“Jimmy, get out of my room!” Mia shouted.
“Come on, Mia. I’m done packing. Let me help!” Jimmy, her elder brother pleaded.
Mia wondered why her annoying brother wanted to help her. But she finally gave him a blue bag. “You can take it downstairs.”
Jimmy carried the bag over his shoulder, nearly falling over under the weight. “What’s in here? Rocks?” he asked.
“Books,” Mia replied. “Dad told me that Mom had built us a spaceship. There’s plenty of space.”
“Wow,” the children were amazed as they got on the spaceship. Soon, they were in space. The view was fantastic, but suddenly, they noticed a giant rock in their way.
“Is that flying towards us?” Mia asked.
“It’s an asteroid!” Tom shouted. “Everybody take cover!”
Mia screamed as the giant rock hit the spaceship. Everything went dark.
Mia opened her eyes. There’s a ringing in her ears. She saw her mother and brother lying beside. They were both still. Jimmy didn’t seem to breathe. Mia put her ear to his chest. “Thump.” She could hear Jimmy’s heart beat. She kept calling his name. Jimmy slowly opened his eyes. Mia hugged her brother closely. “I’m never letting go again.” she said.
“My... leg...” Jimmy mumbled. Mia let go, apologizing.
“Wow,” Jimmy replied. “That was fast. Didn’t expect you to break your promise that quick.”
Mia rolled her eyes. Then she found Brianna awake. She and Jimmy moved towards her, helping her upright.
“Where’s Tom?” Brianna asked.
They heard a faint voice. “I am here.”
Together, the family made their way to the planet’s surface. As they explored, Brianna fell into a hole.
“Mom!” Mia shouted. “Are you okay?”
“Come down here,” Brianna called.
“What’s down there?” Tom asked.
“Aliens,” Brianna replied.
Everyone jumped down. Mia noticed a blue stone behind Jimmy. “Hello!” the stone said. “I’m Pebblo, and these are Stony and Gabbry.”
Brianna laughed. “Pebblo, Stony, and Gabbry. Cute.”
“Can we stay with you?” Mia asked.
“Just until we find our way to Saturn,” Tom added.

Bread, a simple food made from flour and water, has been part of human life. Scientists have learned that humans have eaten bread in some form for over 10,000 years.
Ancient Egyptians were among the first professional bread-makers. Egypt got little rain. Ancient Egyptian farmers depended on the yearly flood of the Nile River to water their fields. These dry conditions made wheat the best crop to grow—it needed less water than other plants. Ancient Egyptians made flour with wheat, then baked bread.
Early Egyptian bread was flat, like modern pancakes. But around 300 B.C., something amazing happened: Bakers discovered that adding yeast made bread big and soft. Scientists found that professional bakers and home bakers used the same skills in ancient Egypt. Home bakers, usually women, made the bread only needed for the day.
Today, people still make bread from the same basic things the Egyptians used before—flour, yeast, salt and water. While we now have choices like homemade bread, neighbourhood bakeries or factory-made bread, every slice of bread connects us to those ancient kitchen experiments by the Nile. From flatbread to soft sandwiches, bread’s 10,000-year journey shows how human creativity turns simple things into something special.
33. What great improvement in bread-making did the Ancient Egyptians make?
A. They grew potatoes or rice to make bread.
B. They kept lots of bread for daily use.
C. They made bread big and soft.
D. They made bread in big factories.
34. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the second paragraph?
A. Wheat. B. Flour. C. The yearly flood. D. The dry condition.
35. What can be inferred from the development of bread-making according to the passage?
A. Egyptians makes the best bread. B. Bread connects Egyptians to the world.
C. Simple things turn everything special. D. Life becomes better with human creativity.
36. Where can we probably find this passage?
A. A business magazine. B. A farming textbook.
C. A book about food history. D. A scientific report on Egypt.

Two scientists called Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer developed the two-factor theory of emotion (情绪) in 1962. They said that emotions are formed in two parts. First, the body has a physical response to a threat (威胁) and then the mind considers the physical response as an emotion, which is then felt by the person. For example, imagine you are walking through a forest and you see a bear. Seeing it would probably start a physical response, such as your heart beating very fast and sweat breaking out. Your mind then decides that this is fear, which you feel as an emotion.
A new study has suggested that the key to reducing feelings of anger is not letting out but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation.
The study was published by Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University. They wanted to explore the popular theory that venting anger is a good way of reducing it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or hitting something like boxing sandbags, so that you let go of the emotion and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These involved 10,189 people, and included a variety of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kjaervik and Bushman define anger as “an emotional response to a real or imagined threat”. They used a theory of emotion that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind.
The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities influenced anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they made people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that decreased physical responses in the body did help to reduce feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “definitely not the best way to reduce anger”.
The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could reduce anger. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to reduce negative feelings.
37. According to Schachter and Singer’s theory, what happens first if you see a snake and feel afraid?
A. You get the feeling of fear. B. You get the feeling of calm.
C. Your heart beats fast. D. Your heart beats slowly.
38. What does the underlined word “venting” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Expressing. B. Hiding. C. Avoiding. D. Imagining.
39. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. A new method of venting anger. B. A new method of increasing anger.
C. Good activities to vent anger. D. Good activities to reduce anger.
40. What can we learn about calming activities?
A. They can reduce feelings of anger. B. They can increase the heart rate.
C. They are good for venting anger. D. They are good for heart health.

AI and Our Life
As we all know, AI has changed our lives greatly.
I often use powerful AI translators and handy smart speakers in my daily life. They greatly help us study far more efficiently and save plenty of precious spare time. However, relying on such AI tools too much easily makes us lazy and completely stops us from thinking independently.
Therefore, we should learn to use all AI products wisely. It is merely a helpful practical tool, not our master. We must actively control it instead of being fully controlled by it. Let’s embrace modern technology responsibly to create a warmer and better future.
