Are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat? Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old student from Snellville, Georgia, US, recently won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. 1 This won him $ 25,000 and the title of “Best Young Scientist in America”. Subash’s idea for the tool came from a simple yet important question. His mother always told him to wash fruit before eating it. 2 He learned that 70 percent of fruits and vegetables have pesticides. They can bring possible health problems like cancer. Washing only gets rid of part of the pesticides. “If we could find them, we could avoid eating them and lower the risk of those health problems,” Subash said. 3 It works by shining lights and seeing how light reflects (反射) off food. With the help of a sensor (传感器), a screen and an AI learning model, the tool can find out if there are pesticides around. To use it, users must point PestiSCAND at the fruit or vegetable to see if they need to wash it again. 4 During testing, PestiSCAND was right more than 85 percent of the time in finding pesticides. Subash plans to improve his tool and hopes to get it to market by the time he starts college. 5 “In 15 years, I hope to be designing and building devices that can help make the world a better place,” said Subash. A.This led Subash to invent PestiSCAND, a small tool that people can carry around. B.They can check the results in an app on their phones. C.The percentage of fruits and vegetables with pesticides (农药). D.The boy wondered if the action did any good. E.His love for science will never go away. F.Subash will give up his love for science after college. G.He made a tool that can find pesticides on fruits and vegetables. G“He made a tool that can find pesticides on fruits and vegetables.” D“The boy wondered if the action did any good.” A“This led Subash to invent PestiSCAND, a small tool that people can carry around.” B“They can check the results in an app on their phones.” E“His love for science will never go away.” Respecting older people is a tradition in China. 1 When an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. 2 In western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. 3 Even after retirement (退休), they take on hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well. 4 Seniors usually take trains and buses for free. They are given discounts (折扣) in stores and restaurants. But western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live by themselves. 5 A great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for children to show their respect. A.For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’ homes. B.Young men think they are too old to do things. C.Young people always offer seats to older people on a subway or bus. D.Westerners sometimes don’t respect their older people. E.They’d rather do everything themselves. F.Westerners respect their older people, too. G.There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. G项“There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect.” 空前已经列举了室内礼仪和递物礼仪,C项“Young people always offer seats to older people on a subway or bus.” A项“For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’ homes.” When was the last time you used cash? For many of us, it feels like ages. Have you ever looked carefully at RMB notes? Nowadays, we pay for bubble tea or meals with just a phone. Banknotes seem to have disappeared. 1 They are like small windows that show Chinese culture. Take the ¥100 note as an example. Its background picture looks like a phoenix (凤凰) design on a piece of Warring States-period lacquerware (漆器)! 2 . In fact, China was one of the first countries in the world to use paper money. During the Song Dynasty, people began to use notes like jiaozi. They had detailed designs, such as dragons and cloud stripes. 3 They also made it hard to make fake (假的) money. 4 For example, the ¥50 note shows the chrysanthemum (菊花). This flower often carries the meaning of the hermit (隐士), especially because of Tao Yuanming, the poet who wrote the famous line “Plucking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence.” Another great example is the plum blossom (梅花) on the ¥100 note. 5 It has been a sign of strength, hope, and courage. It’s probably the most celebrated flower in our culture and has appeared in more poems than one can count since ancient times. RMB notes carry a cultural weight far heavier than the numbers printed on them! A.This flower opens in the cold winter. B.However, they go beyond payment use. C.I used cash to buy almost everything in daily life in the past. D.These designs not only looked pretty but served a second purpose. E.It shows that the beauty of ancient art still lives on today’s money. F.Notes were invented during the Song Dynasty and soon became widely used. G.Each RMB note features a flower that plays an important role in Chinese culture. 1.空前一句提到“Banknotes seem to have disappeared.”可知,移动支付时代纸币很少被使用;空后一句说“They are like small windows that show Chinese culture.” B“However, they go beyond payment use.” E“It shows that the beauty of ancient art still lives on today’s money.” D“These designs not only looked pretty but served a second purpose.” 4.此空位于段首,且后文紧接着举例“¥50 note shows the chrysanthemum”和“plum blossom on the ¥100 note”。 G“Each RMB note features a flower that plays an important role in Chinese culture.” A“This flower opens in the cold winter.” Many people dream of traveling to space one day. With the rapid development of space technology, this dream might come true for more people in the future. 1 For example, your body will change in strange ways. Without gravity, your muscles and bones don’t have to work as hard. 2 This is why astronauts on the International Space Station exercise for two hours every day. They use special machines to keep their bodies strong. Another change is that your height might increase slightly. 3 In space, the discs between the bones in your back can relax and expand. But don’t get too excited. You will return to your normal height when you come back to Earth. Your sense of taste also becomes different. Many astronauts say that food tastes blander in space. 4 As a result, they often prefer spicy or strongly flavored foods like chili sauce or horseradish to make their meals more enjoyable. 5 You might feel sick at first, lose things that float away, or have trouble sleeping because the sun rises and sets every 90 minutes. So, while space travel is exciting, it also requires careful preparation and a strong body. A.So, they start to become weaker. B.Therefore, they need to eat more food. C.However, living in space is not always easy. D.This happens because there is no gravity pulling you down. E.That’s because fluids in the body move upward to the head. F.Luckily, scientists are working to solve these problems. G.Because of this, they add more salt and sauces to their food. 1.根据文章第1段“Many people dream of traveling to space one day...this dream might come true for more people in the future.”以及后文“For example, your body will change in strange ways.” C“However, living in space is not always easy.  ”符合语境,引出下文的困难举例。 2.根据文章第2段“Without gravity, your muscles and bones don’t have to work as hard.”以及后文“This is why astronauts...exercise...to keep their bodies strong.” A“So, they start to become weaker.” 3.根据文章第3段“Another change is that your height might increase slightly.”以及后文“In space, the discs between the bones in your back can relax and expand.” D“This happens because there is no gravity pulling you down.” 4.根据文章第4段“Many astronauts say that food tastes blander in space.”以及后文“As a result, they often prefer spicy or strongly flavored foods...” E“That's because fluids in the body move upward to the head. ”科学地解释了味觉变化的原因。 5.根据文章第5段”You might feel sick at first, lose things that float away, or have trouble sleeping...”以及结尾“So, while space travel is exciting, it also requires careful preparation...” F“Luckily, scientists are working to solve these problems. Adolescence (青春期) is a difficult time for teenagers. It takes place when you are aged between thirteen and nineteen. 1 Everyone will go through these changes. For example, you used to be happiest in the company of your parents. But now you need your own space and some privacy. In the past, your parents made most decisions for you, but now you want to decide things for yourself. 2 But it is important to remember that they will influence your relationship with your parents. So what can you do to make life easier and make sure that you stay on good terms with your parents? Firstly, your parents will feel much better if you let them know that you still love and value them. Remember that they have forever lost the little child you once were. They may not say so, but they are probably feeling a sense of loss. 3 Secondly, try to agree with your family’s rules. You may feel these are unnecessary, but your parents’ main concern is just to keep you safe. 4 It may feel like a nuisance (麻烦事) to remember to phone them and let them know where you are, but make the effort anyway. Thirdly, try to understand why they might be angry with your behavior. Do your parents get cross if you spend hours playing video games and leave your homework till the last minute? That’s because they want you to do well at school. 5 Keep talking to your parents, tell them about what you did today, let them know where you are going, and ask for advice if you need it. The more disconnected they feel, the more distrustful and controlling they tend to become. A.Finally, it’s all about communication! B.All these changes are perfectly normal. C.Your parents will expect you to behave responsibly. D.Anyway, you should always listen to them carefully. E.Showing them you still need them helps ease that feeling. F.Once you have agreed to the rules, try to keep your word. G.As your body changes, you also begin to think and feel differently. 1.第一段中“It takes place when you are aged between thirteen and nineteen.”以及空后“Everyone will go through these changes.” G“As your body changes, you also begin to think and feel differently.” 2.第二段空后“But it is important to remember that they will influence your relationship with your parents.” B“All these changes are perfectly normal.” 3.第三段中“They may not say so, but they are probably feeling a sense of loss.” E“Showing them you still need them helps ease that feeling.”中的“that feeling”正好指代前文的“a sense of loss”,起到承上启下的作用。 4.第四段开头“Secondly, try to agree with your family rules. You may feel these are unnecessary, but your parents’ main concern is just to keep you safe.”以及空后“It may feel like a nuisance to remember to phone them…” F“Once you have agreed to the rules, try to keep your word.” 5.第五段空后“Keep talking to your parents, tell them about what you did today…” A“Finally, it’s all about communication!” Everyone wants to be happy. You see people who are smiling and laughing, and you want to be like them. 1 However, there are also bad days. Here are three ways to make you happier every day. Smile often. Research has shown that the facial expression you wear influences your state of mind. 2 Wearing a pleasant expression for a long period of time will slowly improve your feelings and help you have a happier day. 3 The more you complain, the more annoyed you become. If all you notice or talk about during the day are the things that annoy you, it is no surprise that you are unhappy. To truly increase your long-term happiness, don’t complain any longer. 4 Practice thankfulness. Thankfulness has been shown to be the last ticket to a happy life. The more you practice thankfulness, the more you will find things to be grateful for in your life. 5 Even something as simple as a safe place to sleep or food to eat is worth being thankful for because not everyone is fortunate enough to have those necessities. A.Try your best to be healthy. B.You will slowly stop paying much attention to what worries you. C.Have an entire day without complaining even once and see how you feel. D.Stop complaining. E.There are good days filled with sunshine and smiles. F.If you try to smile, you are more likely to be happy. G.This then leads you to realize how much goodness is in your life. 1.第一段中,后文提到“However, there are also bad days.”,说明前文应对应“好的日子”,选项E“There are good days filled with sunshine and smiles.”(有充满阳光和笑容的美好日子),与后文形成转折,衔接上下文。 2. Research has shown that the facial expression you wear influences your state of mind.”(经常微笑。 F“If you try to smile, you are more likely to be happy.”(如果你尝试微笑,你更有可能感到快乐)承接了微笑对情绪的影响,呼应了段落主题。 3.第三段后文提到“The more you complain, the more annoyed you become.”(你抱怨得越多,就会变得越恼怒),整段围绕“抱怨”展开,选项D“Stop complaining.”(停止抱怨)作为段落主题句,引出了下文关于抱怨的影响的论述。 4.第三段前文提到“To truly increase your long-term happiness, don’t complain any longer.”(要真正提升长期幸福感,就不要再抱怨了),选项C“Have an entire day without complaining even once and see how you feel.”(一整天都不要抱怨,看看你感觉如何)是对“停止抱怨”的具体行动建议,承接了前文的观点。 5.第四段的核心是“Practice thankfulness.”(学会感恩),前文提到“The more you practice thankfulness, the more you will find things to be grateful for in your life.”(你练习感恩越多,就越能在生活中找到值得感恩的事),选项G“This then leads you to realize how much goodness is in your life.”(这会让你意识到生活中有多少美好)承接了练习感恩带来的积极影响,呼应了段落主题。 Good relationships with others can make our lives happier and healthier. But sometimes, we may have problems with friends, parents, or classmates. 1 First, learn to be a good listener. Listening is more than just hearing words — it means paying full attention. When someone is talking to you, look at them and listen carefully. 2 This shows that you care about what they are saying and value their feelings. Second, learn to say “sorry” when you make a mistake. 3 No one is perfect, and accepting your fault is a sign of strength. A simple “I’m sorry” can make things better and help you keep your friendship. Third, try to understand other people’s feelings. 4 Before you say or do something, think about how the other person might feel. This helps you act with kindness rather than anger. Control your feelings when you are upset. When you feel angry or sad, don’t shout or say bad words. Take a deep breath, calm down, and then talk about the problem in a kind way. Staying calm shows respect and helps solve problems more easily. 5 Sometimes people need time to be themselves. Everyone needs some time alone to think or relax. Don’t push others to talk or play if they don’t want to. Respecting their feelings is also a way to show your care. A.Everyone makes mistakes. B.Put yourself in others’ shoes. C.Don’t cut in or look at your phone. D.Don’t be afraid to ask for help from teachers. E.Finally, give others space. F.Sharing your happiness with others is also important. G.Here are some useful tips on how to deal with relationships. 1.前文提到有时我们会与朋友、父母或同学产生问题,后文给出了具体的建议(学会倾听、学会道歉等),G项“Here are some useful tips on how to deal with relationships.” 2.本段讲述要学会做一个好的倾听者,前文说别人说话时要看着他们并仔细听,C项“Don’t cut in or look at your phone.” Jianzi is a traditional sport in China. 1 . During the cuju game, a ball must be kicked through an opening into a net. And players aren’t allowed to touch the ball with their hands. 2 . In fact, it gets its name from the feathered shuttlecock (羽毛毽球) that is used to play the game. With many years of development, it has been enjoyed by Chinese people. 3 . However, it is more difficult than people imagine. It needs people to control the jianzi and kick it in the air by using their feet or parts of the legs. If one wants to play jianzi perfectly, it requires plenty of practice. For fun, the game can be played by two people or two teams. When they play the game, they usually set a common goal. The goal can be keeping the jianzi in the air until 100 kicks are reached. 4 . As a full-body exercise, it has become a good way to build up the body. Besides improving the coordination (协调性), it’s also good for lung function (肺功能). 5 . It also trains your upper body like the shoulders, back and neck. It’s a wonderful sport that should be shared with more people. A.But jianzi doesn’t use a ball B.At break time, ask your classmates to enjoy this sport C.The game seems to be simple D.Therefore, it is easy for people to play the game E.During play, setting a goal can make the game go smoothly F.This kind of movement keeps your lower body moving, which is helpful for increasing power G.It developed from another Chinese sport called cuju in ancient times 【答案】1.G 2.A 3.C 4.E 5.F 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 1.根据下文“During the cuju game, a ball must be kicked through an opening into a net.” 2.根据下文“In fact, it gets its name from the feathered shuttlecock that is used to play the game.” 3.根据下文“However, it is more difficult than people imagine.” 4.根据上文“When they play the game, they usually set a common goal.” 5.根据上文“Besides improving the coordination, it’s also good for lung function.”及下文“It also trains your upper body like the shoulders, back and neck.” Are you feeling that you have stopped improving even though you have been working hard? You may have reached a stage where learning slows down or even stops. 1 But it does not mean there is no way out. The following tips can help you break through. Start by setting clear goals. When progress slows, it often means you need a new direction. 2 This allows you to see your progress more clearly and helps you stay active when the learning feels difficult. 3 Sometimes learners cannot see their own weak points. Teachers or experienced friends can offer fresh views and point out areas for improvement. With their help, you can avoid repeating the same mistakes and make progress again. Changing the way you learn is another useful method. Doing the same thing repeatedly may lead to boredom and slow growth. Trying different ways — such as reading new books, practicing for 20 minutes each day, or studying with a friend—can bring back your interest. 4 A positive attitude matters just as much. A learning slowdown does not mean you have failed. 5 Believe in yourself and keep trying. With patience and effort, you can get past this stage and continue to improve. In short, a learning slowdown is not the end of your progress. By using these methods, you can break through the difficulty and continue moving forward. A.Asking others for advice is also helpful. B.This can be a very hard time for anyone. C.Try to learn from other people’s mistakes. D.Instead, it can be a sign that you are about to grow. E.These changes make learning more fun and effective. F.One simple way is to break your big goal into smaller steps. 1.前句“You may have reached a stage where learning slows down or even stops.”描述学习放缓甚至停滞的阶段,后句“But it does not mean there is no way out.” 2.前句“Start by setting clear goals. When progress slows, it often means you need a new direction.”提到设定清晰目标、寻找新方向,后句“This allows you to see your progress more clearly and helps you stay active when the learning feels difficult.” 3.后文“Teachers or experienced friends can offer fresh views and point out areas for improvement.” 4.前句“Trying different ways — such as reading new books, practicing for 20 minutes each day, or studying with a friend — can bring back your interest.” 5.前句“A learning slowdown does not mean you have failed.”说明学习放缓不代表失败,后句“Believe in yourself and keep trying.” Tennis is a challenging and fun physical sport, and regular playing can greatly improve overall physical and mental health. 1 Improve bone and grip (握力) strength As we age, our muscles naturally weaken and our bones can become weaker. 2 The repetitive movement and power during a tennis match can help make bones stronger. “People who keep their grip strength age more slowly. They stay healthier, live longer and are stronger throughout their bodies,” says doctor Ardeshir Hashmi, an expert in older people’s health. Lower your chance of heart problems The physical activities, which include both aerobic (有氧的) and anaerobic activities, help the heart and blood flow. Based on recent research, dance or gymnastics can lower the risk of heart disease or stroke by 36 percent. 3 However, playing tennis three hours a week can lower your chance of heart disease by over 50%, according to the United States Tennis Association (USTA). 4 Tennis, unlike working out alone at the gym, running outside or swimming, requires you to interact with others. Audiobooks have become quite popular among people of all ages these days. 1 Reading paper books needs us to pay full attention to the words in the books, and we also need to find some time and a proper place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like. 2 But there is a big question. Do we get knowledge from audiobooks as much as we do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment to find the answer. They called on some volunteers and divided them into two groups. 3 And those in Group 2 read a paper book with the same content (内容) . It turned out that the two groups both recalled the same information, whether they listened to it or read it. 4 In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activates (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading does. 5 One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing other things. “If you’re trying to learn while doing other things, you’re not going to do well,” Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times. A.It gives your eyes a break, too. B.Reading paper books is better for us. C.Why do so many people like audiobooks? D.Volunteers in Group 1 listened to an audiobook. They are everywhere — in the air, on your hands, and on the surfaces you touch every day. 1 But not all germs are bad; some help your body stay healthy. There are four main types of germs: bacteria, viruses (病毒), fungi (真菌), and protozoa (原生动物). 2 Bacteria can live on their own, while viruses need a host (宿主) to survive. Knowing the difference helps doctors choose the right treatment. The best way to protect yourself from harmful germs is to wash your hands properly. 3 Use warm water and soap, and scrub (擦洗) for at least 20 seconds — about the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. This removes germs that you’ve picked up from doorknobs, phones, and other surfaces. 4 Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (纸巾) when you cough or sneeze, and then throw the tissue away. If you don’t have a tissue, use your elbow instead of your hands. This stops germs from spreading through the air. Eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep also help your body fight off germs. 5 When your immune system (免疫系统) is strong, it can better protect you from getting sick. So next time you reach for a snack, choose fruits and vegetables instead of chips, and make sure you go to bed on time! A.Each type spreads differently and causes different kinds of illnesses. B.It’s also important to cover your coughs and sneezes to stop germ spread. C.Washing your hands for just a few seconds is good enough for you. C.Don’t cut in or look at your phone. D.Don’t be afraid to ask for help from teachers. E.Finally, give others space. F.Sharing your happiness with others is also important. Tennis can bring different groups of people together through exercise in the community. Keeping strong social networks helps prevent mental health conditions like anxiety and loneliness, helping people feel happier into older age. If this sounds good to you, you’re in luck. 5 So, it may just be the time to dust off your racket (球拍). A.Reduce your mental stress. B.They become players rather than watchers in their chosen activity. C.Grip strength can show how well you’re aging. D.Tennis is popular among all ages and skill levels. E.Another study further supported the result above. F.But some people believe they learn better from paper books. Germs (微生物) are tiny living things that can make you sick. D.They are so small that you can’t see them with your eyes alone. E.This helps your body build a strong immune system. You’re left with 800 yuan. How will you spend it? It would be silly to spend the money at the mall, especially if you already have great clothes in your wardrobe, right? 1 You’d probably also want to put some money aside for emergencies Well, you just learned how to budget It’s all about deciding what matters most to you and how much you want to spend on those things. 2 For example, if you plan on buying a new smartphone and a cool smartwatch, you should consider saving some money. The next time your friends invite you to join them for a karaoke night, you might as well decide to pass. 3 You just have to get creative. Instead of meeting your friends at the pizza shop and then going to the movies, you could invite them over to your apartment. You can buy some frozen pizzas at the supermarket and watch a movie online. 4 If you search the Web for budgeting tips, you’ll find many. 5 Once you find a method that works for you, it’s easier to get excited about budgeting. A.It’s a lot cheaper but just as fun. B.You can help others by making a budget for them. C.But having a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. D.A smarter way to spend that money would be on food and transportation. E.As a young person, you have many opportunities to try different methods.
