Currently,a Year 11 student at Chevalier College in NSW,Australia,at just 16,Jayashruthi
Palanisamy has designed a device,a wearable sign language glove called the Echo-Glove,which is
beneficial to the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people.
The goal of the device is to bridge the gap between deaf or hard of hearing individuals and those
who can hear."This idea came from texting a deaf person, who shared how hard natural
communication is-relying on interpreters and written notes shouldn't be the only solution today,"
Jayashruthi said. What started as a Design and Tech project quickly became something the student
wanted to see make a difference in the real world. She developed a proof of concept for the Echo-
Glove that earned her a finalist spot in the Next Gen Awards'Young Innovator of the Year
category.
The invention functions by flex()and motion sensors sewn into the fingers and back of the
glove, which record the position and movement of the hand and fingers. This information is
matched to corresponding sign language gestures (through a trained data model that
Jayashruthi built and refined by hand. The glove then changes the signs into speech using a
processing system she programmed and any spoken responses are changed back into text that is
displayed on the screen.

Jayashruthi's ultimate goal is to develop the Echo-Glove into a market-ready product in the near
future, which people can use in their daily lives."Creating this project has been one of my best
experiences and taught me more than I could have imagined,"she said.Together with partners,
she's now working to improve the accuracy, responsiveness and comfort of the glove.Meanwhile,
she's adding a small camera and AI model that detects the wearer's facial expressions, which
adjusts the tone of the spoken output."This helps make the translation sound more natural and
human and less robotic,as I've found emotion to be such an important part of sign language
communication,"Jayashruthi said.
24.What made Jayashruthi invent the glove?
A.The strong desire for the awards.
B.A special interpersonal interaction.
C.The need of her proof of concept.
D.A school design project requirement.
25.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning the Echo-Glove?
A.Its working principle.
B.Its training methods for users.
C.Its development process.
D.Its advantages over written notes.
26.What is Jayashruthi's hope for the Echo-Glove?
A.It'll help her partners a lot.
B.It'll replace all interpreters.
C.It'll reach consumers soon.
D.It'll prioritize emotion detection.
27.Which word best describes Jayashruthi as an inventor?
A.Independent.B.Optimistic.
C.Generous.
D.Considerate.
A good cover letter marries an applicant's CV()to the demands of the job.It enables
employers to discern prospective candidates, especially those with employment history irrelevant to
their career goals. And it signals the applicant cares enough about the position to go through a
laborious process, rather than simply writing their desired salary on their CV and mass-mailing it to
local businesses.
The rise of large language models(LLM)has changed the dynamic.A new paper by Anais
Galdin and Jesse Silbert uses data from Freelancer.com,a jobs-listing site,to explore its labor
market impact.Comparing pre-and post-ChatGPT activity,two results stand out.
The first is that cover letters have lengthened. In the pre-LLM era,the median()was
not long.A few years later,post-ChatGPT,the median rose to 104 words.Recently, the site
introduced its own AI tool, allowing users to prepare a proposal without even having to leave the
platform. The applications written using the tool-the only ones that can be definitively labelled as
AI-generated-are longer still, with a median length of 159 words, more than twice the human-
written baseline.
The second is that firms have stopped caring about what is written. When only some
applications show applicants'effort, all letters are worth close reading for top candidates. When all
show "effort"-tend to be largely identical, reading them brings little value. To explain this,
researchers used AI to score letters across nine categories-from ad reading evidence to clearly
written English.Scored 0-2 per category(max 18).Pre-LLM,the median score was 3.9;post-
LLM,it nearly doubled.
This has consequences. Before LLMs,a well-written proposal earned an extra 26 per task.
After Al,this extra increase disappeared.Galdin and Silbert estimate wages on the platform are
now 5%lower and hiring 1.5%lower than in a world without AI cover letters.Losing the ability to
distinguish strong candidates, employers cut new hires'pay and often hire worse ones. For bosses,
lower candidate quality is offset by lower wages. But this benefit to businesses was worth less, they
calculated, than the losses suffered by workers.
28.What does the underlined word "discern"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Represent.
B.Identify.
C.Train.
D.Attract.
提分冲刺卷(二)·英语I卷第4页(共8页)
29.What was the median word count of a cover letter in the pre-LLM era?
A.About 79 words.
B.About 208 words.
C.About 263 words.
D.About 318 words.
30.Why do firms care little about the cover letters nowadays?
A.They are always full of errors.
B.Their content all look similar.
C.They are often scored too low.
D.Their idea is looked down on by AI.
31.What is Galdin and Silbert's shared view on AI cover letters?
A.They have improved hiring quality.B.They cut new hires'pay significantly.
C.They simplify the application process.D.They reduce overall job market efficiency.

Researchers completing one of the largest impact studies on the potential environmental
impacts of deep-sea mining found a bit more than they anticipated on the ocean floor.
Harvesting rare earth metals 13,000 feet deep in the ocean raises serious concerns. There's
growing commercial interest in the deep ocean despite its extreme severity for humans,as it holds
some of the planet's largest rare earth reserves.A key target for deep-sea mining advocates is the
Clarion-Clipperton Zone(CCZ),a continent-sized plain 2.5 miles deep between Hawaii and Mexico.
Rich in minerals, the CCZ is also a poorly understood habitat-biologists discovered over 5,000 new
species there in 2022.However,there was barely any research into the topic though conservationists had
long voiced concerns about mining's environmental impacts.
Critical metals are needed for our green transformation like developing new energy, and they
are in short supply."Several of these metals are found in large quantities on the deep-sea floor, but
until now,no one has shown how they can be mined or what environmental impact this would
have,Thomas Dahlgren,a famous biologist said.To learn more about possible effects,Dahlgren
and his team surveyed nearly 50 miles of the CCZ two years before it was scheduled to receive a
deep-sea mineral mining vehicle test run. They returned two months after the test, completing 160
days of fieldwork,spotting over 4,000 organisms.From these,they ultimately identified 788
separate species.
They found that within the machine's tracks, the team calculated a 37 percent decrease in total
animal population along with a 32 percent decrease in diversity."Deep-sea mining within the CCZ is
at a critical turning point,as the industry looks to move beyond the exploration phase and into
commercial exploitation,"the team wrote. With this first major project completed, marine
biologists hope it can serve as a baseline for future analysis of deep-sea mining impacts.Moving
forward, their research will extend to the 30 percent of the CCZ currently protected by
environmental guidelines."At present,we have virtually no idea what lives there,"one researcher
said.
32.How did researchers react to deep-sea mining's eco-effects before Dahlgren's study?
A.They were inactive.
B.They were doubtful.
C.They were optimistic.
D.They were disapproving.
33.Why does the author mention green transformation?
A.To advance green energy.
B.To criticize mining practices.
C.To stress key metals'shortage.
D.To discuss sea animals'risks.
34.What will Dahlgren's team do next?
A.Survey more deep-sea organisms.
B.Analyze the vehicle test results.
C.Develop environmental guidelines.
D.Study the conserved CCZ areas.
35.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Deep-sea Mining for Renewable Power B.New Species in Deep-sea Mining Zones
C.A Study on Deep-sea Mining's Impacts D.The Future of Deep-sea Mining Exploration

Potlucks()are a beloved social tradition in many countries, especially in the US,
Canada, and Australia. The idea is simple:people gather for a meal, and each guest brings one dish
to share with everyone.36
Potlucks happen in many settings-community centers, parks, friends'homes,or even
workplaces.37 Guests can bring any kind of food:homemade dishes like pasta, salads,or
cookies,or store-bought treats such as sandwiches. So everyone finds something they like.
What makes potlucks special is the sharing spirit.People get to try new foods they might not
make themselves.38 A neighbor shares a traditional cake from their home country. It's a great
way to learn about different cultures through food.Sometimes, guests add small notes about their
dishes, telling a short story or why it's meaningful to them.
39 Hosts only need to prepare a clean space, plates, and drinks.Guests don't have to
worry about bringing expensive gifts-their dish is the gift.Everyone eats together, talks, and
laughs, making the event warm and friendly.Even shy people can join easily,as talking about food
is a simple and natural way to connect.
What's more, potlucks teach valuable life skills.40 That's because guests often arrange
what to bring to ensure a balanced meal. These gatherings build confidence and strengthen social
bonds through shared experiences. For students, potlucks serve as a practical and enjoyable way to
apply these life skills-they get to practice communication and respect while learning about cultural
differences and family traditions behind each shared dish.
So,potlucks are more than just meals. They bring people closer, celebrate sharing, and create
happy memories.
A.Potlucks are also easy and low-stress.
B.Potlucks are popular in many schools.
C.They encourage teamwork and planning.
D.This way,no single person has to cook all the food.
E.A student might bring his or her mom's famous noodles.
F.The simplest gatherings create the most attractive potlucks.
G.They are perfect for birthdays, holidays,or just simple get-togethers.

Born in 1950,Bellassen,France's first General Inspector of Chinese Language at the Ministry
of National Education,is a respected scholar both in China and France,56 speaks fluent
Mandarin and has spent decades promoting cultural and educational exchanges between France and
China.
His love for Chinese began in his 57 (young),when he was drawn to the characters on

interest,he entered the University of Paris VI in 1969 to study Chinese-a courageous choice,as
Chinese-related careers were rare in France then.Ignoring 59 (others)doubts,he practiced new

For Bellassen,Chinese characters are more than 63 language-they are cultural carriers
and poetic works. He admires Tang poetry and idioms,as they express deep ideas 64 (brief),
and can recite Wang Wei's poems or use idioms like "Learning-to-Walk-in-Handan"naturally.He

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Fred Norris was a 67-year-old Englishman. He lived alone in a big house, where the silence
was so loud that it seemed to ring through every room. His wife had died three years before, and
his children were too busy with their own lives-his daughter was married, and his son lived in a
flat far away.He often sat by the window, staring at the empty street, feeling lonely and helpless.
To fill the empty days,Fred turned to his computer. He spent two or three hours each day
chatting with online friends from all over the world. It was not much, but it made the silence easier
to bear.
Then, two years ago, everything changed.Fred met Tony Lawes,a retired man from Sydney,
Australia.Tony was also alone-his wife had moved abroad for work many years before and rarely
came back, leaving him with no close ones around. He loved gardening and often shared stories of
tending his small yard with Fred. They found they had a lot in common, and soon their daily chats
became the best part of their days.
Every morning at ten o'clock sharp, they logged on to chat. They talked about their daily
routines, their favorite foods, and their old memories. They sent each other photos of their houses,
their gardens, and even the birds in their yards.Later, they started writing letters, too. No matter
how long they talked, there always seemed to be more to say.For the first time in years,Fred felt
he was not alone anymore.
One day,Fred logged on as usual-but there was no message from Tony.He waited for an
hour, then two,but still nothing. He checked his email, his letterbox, but there was no sign of his
friend.Panic slowly filled his heart..He picked up the phone and dialed Tony's landline(固定电话),
then his mobile. Finally,a calm, kind woman's voice answered. She was a nurse at the hospital.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
From the nurse,Fred learned Tony had had a sudden heart attack.
Upon getting off the plane,Fred headed straight to the hospital where Tony stayed.
