B More than three centuries after she made an adventurous transatlantic voyage to study butterflies,a rare copy of the hand-coloured masterwork by the great naturalist and artist Maria Merian is returning to Amsterdam. Metamorphosis of the Suriname is one of the most fascinating(有吸引力的)books in natural history. It included some 60 richly coloured plates illustrating the different stages of 英语试题(二)第4页(共12页) development that she had observed in Suriname's insects.Metamorphosis of the Suriname is a work of art and scientific scholarship.Merian recorded the local names of plants and insects she studied. In contrast to other European naturalists, she credited local people with helping her discover the colony's wildlife, although didn't name individuals. Born in 1647 in Frankfurt,Germany,Merian learned to paint in her artist father's work- shop, and became fascinated by silkworms, moths and butterflies. At that time, insects were believed to spring forth magically from mud, waste and plant matter in a process known as "spontaneous generation".While Merian was not the first to show the transformation from egg to adult insect, her artistic talents helped to bring this message to a wider audience. The pioneering work of Merian was celebrated for its scientific accuracy and for bringing a new standard of precision to scientific illustration. In 1691,Merian moved to Amsterdam and opened her own studio. She worked as an independent artist and prepared specimens for a growing market of collectors. In Amsterdam, Merian had access to some of the finest natural history collections in the world. As she associated with famous scholars, physicians and botanists, ideas for her own voyage of discovery began to take shape. At 52,she embarked on (a self-funded voyage to Suriname, driven by curiosity about the lives of insects. Her image would be dismissed as a fantasy. In the 18th century, people responded:"That's what you get when you send a woman to tropical places. She probably made that up."But scientists later confirmed her findings. The spider plate was a very good example of how Merian worked. She was a really good observer. 24.What do we know about Metamorphosis of the Suriname? A It won a book award for art. B.It listed the names of local helpers. C.It recorded Merian's transatlantic voyage. D.It was based on Merian's own observations. 25.What was the significance of Merian's work? A.It had extremely high artistic value.B.It was the first natural history book. A.Her encounter with noted scientists.B.Her ambition to expand her business. C.Her dream to travel around the world.D.Her curiosity about the lives of insects. 英语试题(二)第5页(共12页) 27.What can be inferred about nature study in Merian's time? A.It lacked convincing evidence. B.It was conducted in tough places. C.It was considered the domain of men.D.It greatly improved women's social status. C If you ever wondered what your child's drawings might reveal, keep on reading. Imagine how you would feel when looking at Earth from outer space. That feeling of awe is what we call the Overview Effect,a feeling most astronauts report when they return to Earth, described as a transformative experience that changes their view of our planet and humanity-an experience that builds a sense of unity, interconnectedness, and responsibility for Earth's well-being.Recently,40,000 children experienced a virtual reality (VR)space journey, becoming a unique group to have a chance to undergo this awesome feeling without leaving Earth. To find out whether they had experienced the Overview Effect,we asked 100 children from this special group to draw self-images before and after the VR journey. In previous studies on adults,we found that after viewing a video to bring about the Overview Effect, participants tended to draw a smaller self.Apparently, going through the experience of awe and wonder makes one feel smaller, with a smaller drawing as the result. However, when we applied this method to children,we encountered unexpected results. The size of their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience. This discrepancy led us to question:Were drawings by children simply not a good way to measure the Overview Effect?Did what worked for adults simply not work for children? Upon closer analysis,we discovered that the key to measuring transformative experiences in children lies not in the size of their drawings but in the richness of their content. Before the VR journey, the children's drawings were simple, often showing familiar elements from their daily lives. After the journey, their drawings became far more insightful, filled with vivid descriptions indicative of what they had learned during the VR journey-for example, the Earth's ecology. This discovery gave us a new way to understand children's responses to trans- formative experiences. I'm not proposing that we replace tests in schools with children's drawings. But when it comes to transformative experiences,I'd recommend paying more attention to what children actually draw. 28.How can we describe the Overview Effect? A.It expresses man's view of Earth and humanity. B.It helps people get deeper insights into the world. 英语试题(二)第6页(共12页) C.It brings about awesome feelings of the outer space. D.It is a transformative experience unique to astronauts. 29.What does the underlined word "discrepancy"mean in paragraph 3? A.Problem. B.Progress. C.Doubt. D.Difference. 30.How did the children's drawings change after the VR journey? A.The self-images became larger. B.They described more details. C.There were more familiar elements.D.They expressed richer emotions. 31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A.To suggest a way of measuring children's learning. B.To compare adults'and children's Overview Effect C.To analyse the role of VR technology in child education. D.To describe the psychological experience of space travels. D Scientists with the BrainGate research center have developed a breakthrough brain-computer interface(BCI).The system aims to restore communication for individuals with speech disabilities caused by conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),which lead to the gradual loss of mobility and speech. It uses implanted sensors to interpret brain signals when a user attempts to speak, transforming them into text that is read aloud by a computer. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 14,was led by David Brandman and Sergey Stavisky, faculty members at UC Davis Health. ALS,also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, affects nerve cells controlling muscle movement. BCI technology can restore communication for those affected. In this study,Casey Harrell,a 45-year-old man with ALS,regained the ability to communicate effectively within minutes of using the system.Harrell described the experience as life-changing,saying,"My past condition was so demoralizing. Not being able to communicate seems as if you were trapped.Something like this technology will help people get back into life and society. The BrainGate clinical trial, led by Dr.Leigh Hochberg from Brown University, has made major progress in interpreting brain signals to help people with paralysis()communicate. In July 2023,the UC Davis team implanted a BCI device into Harrell's brain, focusing on the left precentral gyrus,a part of the brain that controls speech. The system translates brain activity into phonemes (and words, enabling real-time communication.Harrell's BCI generated speech with a voice similar to his own, using software trained with existing voice samples of his voice before he developed ALS.This allowed him to connect with his loved ones 英语试题(二)第7页(共12页) in a deeply personal way. Over 32 weeks and 248 hours of use,the system achieved remarkable results, with 99.6% accuracy for a 50-word vocabulary in 30 minutes of training and 90.2%accuracy for a 125,000- word vocabulary after 1.4 additional training hours. "This is transformative technology,Brandman said."It provides hope for people who want to speak but can't."Dr.John Ngai, director of the NIH's BRAIN Initiative, highlighted the milestone as a major step in restoring communication for individuals locked in by paralysis. 32.What do we know about the BrainGate BCI? A.It is used to treat speech disabilities. B.It translates brain signals into speech C.It helps people with ALS move and speak. D.It connects brains to make computers smarter. 33.What does the underlined word "demoralizing"in paragraph 2 mean? A.Discouraging.B.Demanding. C.Comforting. D.Eye-opening. 34.Why was the speech composed in Harrell's pre-ALS voice? A.To enable his communication in real time. B.To make his speech emotionally meaningful. C.To improve the accuracy of speech translation. D.To help interpret his brain signals more easily 35.What is Dr.John Ngai's attitude towards the BrainGate BCI? A.Favourable. B.Unclear. C.Cautious. Still then,I was labeled as "shy and quiet".I didn't have a lot of friends, only spoke in class if I really had to,kept everything to myself, avoided public events, and panicked badly at the thought of oral presentations in class. This haunted()me until one day,Ms.S announced in class that each of us was going to be singing a solo in front of the class.I'd had no idea that this was going to happen. When it was my turn, she called me up to the front, instructed the piano player to begin and I very unwillingly sang "Cuckoo, cuckoo, pray what do you do..."in a barely audible,high-pitched voice, with the rest of silent children staring up at me.Ms.S stood next to the piano, saying, “Louder!Louder!”But I didn't know how to project my voice;I couldn't make it any louder.. I was really upset at it.I cried for a few hours.I suspected my childhood shyness was largely unsupported in the new school. This even made me not want to go to school. After school,Ms.S asked me to go into her office. I took her word for it and something shifted for me. 故选A。 故选A。 故选A。 58.and both...and.. 59.Earlier earlier this year意为“今年早些时 候”,符合语境。 60.partnering the tourism section partner 64.anan overview of意为“…的概述”, overview的读音以元音音素开头,其前应 用an。 65.to smooth动词不定式在句中可以表示目 的,即“为了…”。在本句中,沙特人学习 中文是为了使与游客的交流更加顺畅,应用 不定式。 解题陷阱此处很容易受到思维定势的影响, 误认为smooth是形容词,错误地填入 析第7页 smoothly。.考生需要分析句子结构。 wish you wouldn't do that!"After catching 第四部分写作 these words, she grasped my hand tightly, 第一节 glaring,“Embarrass you to be my daughter?” One possible version: Her voice was cracking with anger.I knew I Dear John, should have stopped talking, but I heard How are you?Recently,I participated in myself roaring,"You are using me to show a photography competition launched by my off!"She stopped talking, her eyes narrowing community, themed "The Most Beautiful dangerously.Panicked and outraged,I fled in Workers'”. dead silence, not daring to look back. Then we My photo touched upon a street cleaner. silently headed back.
