A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. As he was putting up a sign to sell the puppies, he felt a pull on his trousers. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. “Sir,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.” “Well,” said the farmer, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a large amount of money.”
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change. “I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?” “Sure,” said the farmer. “Here, Dolly!” he called. Out from the doghouse ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the fence. His eyes danced with joy. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else moving inside the doghouse.
Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller, wobbling (蹒跚) toward the others, doing its best to catch up. “I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the little dog. The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”
Hearing that, the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. There was a disabled leg with a specially made shoe attached to it. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see, sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.” With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Joan Feynman, born in 1927 in Queens, New York, was the younger sister of the famous physicist Richard Feynman. Growing up, Richard played a key role in developing Joan’s curiosity and scientific interest, teaching her advanced mathematics and science. At the age of five, she was already assisting him in his experiments.
For her fourteenth birthday, Richard gifted Joan a college-level physics textbook, Astronomy by Rebecca Horace Baker. This book not only deepened her understanding of physics but also showed her the possibilities for women in the field of science. Inspired by this, Joan pursued a rigorous academic path, which means she chose to study in a way that requires a lot of hard work, self-control, and responsibility. Later, she successfully earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and later a PhD in 1958.
Despite her academic success, Joan took a stop from physics in 1960 to focus on her family, marrying and raising two children. However, this period was ended by a sense of depression (抑郁), leading her to seek employment in 1962. Following an expert’s advice, she secured three job offers and chose to work part-time at Lamont, where she began her research into Earth’s magnetosphere (磁层), making significant contributions to its understanding. It was her determination to explore science that helped Joan regain her mental health.
Joan’s career was marked by numerous scientific breakthroughs, particularly in the study of solar wind and its interaction with Earth’s magnetosphere. As author or co-author of more than 185 papers, Joan’s research achievements range from discovering the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere to identifying the origin of auroras (极光). In 1974, she made history as the first woman elected as an officer of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2000, she was honored with NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific achievements,” said American Physical Society (APS) CEO Kate Kirby. “Despite being discouraged to explore science by social expectations, she stuck to it, and her achievements serve as an inspiration to women who wish to pursue a career in science.”
28. How did Richard influence Joan?
A. By preparing her for subjects in college.
B. By introducing her to the world of science.
C. By teaching her the importance of experiments.
D. By offering her a job serving as his lab assistant.
29. What does the underlined word “rigorous” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Strict. B. External. C. Intelligent. D. Diverse.
30. What message can be inferred from the passage?
A. Joan Feynman was a key member of APS.
B. Richard designed Joan’s career path as a mathematician.
C. Working for scientific goals contributed to Joan’s mental health.
D. In Joan’s time women were encouraged to become scientists.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Joan Feynman as a scientist?
A. Successful and wealthy. B. Outgoing and hardworking.
C. Generous and determined. D. Productive and respectable.

The curb cut (路缘坡) is a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it, daily life might be a lot harder in more ways than one, such as carrying baggage, pushing a bicycle or a wheelchair or riding a skateboard etc. — all these tasks are easier because of the curb cut.
But it was created with a different purpose in mind.
It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. So, activists from Berkeley, California, who also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help disadvantaged (弱势的) people dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently.
I think about the “curb cut effect” a lot when working on issues around health equity (公平). The first time l even heard about the curb cut was in a 2017 Stanford Social Innovation Review piece by PolicyLink CEO Angela Blackwell. Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, there is a deeply rooted social belief among them that intentionally supporting one group hurts another. What the curb cut effect reveals though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, almost everyone wins.”
One such example is closed captioning (字幕), originally intended to help deaf people understand movies and TV shows without needing to hear dialogue or sounds. But it’s easy to think of other applications for closed captioning: it’s convenient for customers watching TV in a noisy bar or gym, second-language learners who want to read as well as listen, or students who use it as a study aid.
So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly onto a sidewalk — think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but almost all of us.
32. What is the purpose of the examples listed in the first paragraph?
A. To call on us to care about the disadvantaged groups.
B. To offer some background information about the curb cut.
C. To tell us that people ignore the existence of the curb cut.
D. To make us aware of the convenience of the curb cut to our daily life.
33. Why do many people see equity “as a zero-sum game” according to Angela Blackwell?
A. Because they believe it’s impossible to have everyone treated equally.
B. Because they believe it is right to give the disadvantaged more help than others.
C. Because they believe the health of the disadvantaged should be considered equally.
D. Because they believe it is a win-win situation when society creates convenience to the disadvantaged.
34. Which of the following examples best shows the “curb cut effect”?
A. The four great inventions of ancient China spread to other countries in the world.
B. Reading machines for blind people help build the digital maps that the drivers use to navigate.
C. Your reaching out to the disadvantaged contributes to more people doing it.
D. A butterfly flapping its wings in one country leads to a Tornado in another country.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The curb cut is a convenient ramp designed to benefit the disabled.
B. Everyone in a society should be treated equally.
C. Supporting disadvantaged groups often ends up benefiting much larger ranges of society.
D. How disability rights activists fought for equity that changed the life of his fellow men.

M: The value of repairing is overlooked. My uncle still wears a jacket from the 1980s. It’s worn when he fixed it several times. It’s more than just an object, it holds memories.
W: Exactly. Those old objects have a story. My mom’s sewing machine is from the 1970s. It still works perfectly because she knows how to care for it.
M: We’ve lost the habit of mending. Now, it’s often easier and sometimes cheaper, just to buy new. But repairing is not just practical, it’s about preserving memories and reducing waste.

W: I have got food ready for you. You seem in a better mood today. Did something good happen?
M: Oh, absolutely. Our math group finally worked well this week.
W: Really? That’s a surprise. Usually, you come home exhausted. What changed?
M: We stopped trying to solve every question together from the very start.
W: How did that help?
M: Well, first our team leader gave each person about 10 minutes to think independently. Then we came together to discuss and compare our ideas.
W: That sounds like a smart approach.
M: It really was. The individual thinking time allowed each person to come up with their own solution. So, when we shared, we had more ideas to discuss.
W: So independent work first made your team work more effective.
M: Exactly. It felt much more organized.

B 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第一段中“Growing up, Richard played a key role in developing Joan’s curiosity and scientific interest, teaching her advanced mathematics and science.(在成长过程中,理查德在培养琼的好奇心和科学兴趣方面发挥了关键作用,教她高等数学和科学知识)”以及第二段中“This book not only deepened her understanding of physics but also showed her the possibilities for women in the field of science. Inspired by this, Joan pursued a rigorous academic path(这本书不仅加深了她对物理学的理解,还向她展示了女性在科学界的可能性。受此启发,琼走上了一条严谨的学术道路)”可知,理查德通过引导琼接触科学知识,向她展示科学领域的可能性,将她引入了科学世界。即理查德通过向她介绍科学世界来影响琼。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中划线词后文“which means she chose to study in a way that requires a lot of hard work, self - control, and responsibility(这意味着她选择了一种需要大量努力、自我控制和责任感的学习方式)”可知,rigorous描述的学习方式是需要付出诸多努力和具备多种品质的,即严格的学习方式。 故选A项。
根据第三段中“However, this period was ended by a sense of depression (抑郁), leading her to seek employment in 1962. Following an expert’s advice, she secured three job offers and chose to work part-time at Lamont, where she began her research into Earth’s magnetosphere (磁层), making significant contributions to its understanding. It was her determination to explore science that helped Joan regain her mental health.(然而,这段时光因一种抑郁情绪而结束,这促使她在1962年开始找工作。听从了一位专家的建议后,她获得了三份工作机会,然后选择了在拉蒙特天文台做兼职。在那里,她开始了对地球磁层的研究,并为人们对地球磁层的了解做出了重大贡献。正是她探索科学的决心帮助琼恢复了心理健康)”可推知,为科学目标而努力工作对琼的心理健康有积极作用。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“As author or co-author of more than 185 papers, Joan’s research achievements range from discovering the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere to identifying the origin of auroras (极光). In 1974, she made history as the first woman elected as an officer of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2000, she was honored with NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.(作为185多篇论文的作者或合著者,琼的研究成果涵盖从发现地球磁层的形状到确定极光的起源。1974年,她成为首位当选美国地球物理联盟官员的女性,创造了历史,2000年,她被授予美国国家航空航天局杰出科学成就奖章)”以及最后一段“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific achievements,(琼・费曼留下了丰富的科学成就,)”和“Despite being discouraged to explore science by social expectations, she stuck to it, and her achievements serve as an inspiration to women who wish to pursue a career in science.(尽管社会期望不鼓励她探索科学,但她坚持了下来,她的成就激励了那些希望从事科学事业的女性。)”
D
D 33. A 34. B 35. C
根据第一段“The curb cut (路缘坡) is a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it, daily life might be a lot harder in more ways than one, such as carrying baggage, pushing a bicycle or a wheelchair or riding a skateboard etc. — all these tasks are easier because of the curb cut.(路缘坡是我们大多数人很少注意到的一种便利。然而,如果没有它,日常生活可能会在很多方面变得更加困难,比如拿行李,推自行车或轮椅或骑滑板等等——所有这些任务都因为路缘坡而变得更容易)”可推知,第一段列举的例子的目的是让我们意识到路缘坡给我们日常生活带来的便利。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, there is a deeply rooted social belief among them that intentionally supporting one group hurts another. (Blackwell正确地指出,许多人将公平视为“零和游戏”。基本上,他们有一种根深蒂固的社会信念,即故意支持一个群体会伤害另一个群体。)”可知,“零和游戏”是一方得益一方受损的局面,Angela Blackwell认为,许多人认为公平是“零和游戏”是因为他们认为人人平等是不可能的。故选A。
根据倒数第三段“What the curb cut effect reveals though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, almost everyone wins.”(Blackwell说,路缘效应揭示的是,“当社会创造了一种环境,允许那些被落在后面的人参与并充分贡献时,几乎每个人都是赢家。”)”和倒数第二段“One such example is closed captioning (字幕), originally intended to help deaf people understand movies and TV shows without needing to hear dialogue or sounds. But it’s easy to think of other applications for closed captioning: it’s convenient for customers watching TV in a noisy bar or gym, second-language learners who want to read as well as listen, or students who use it as a study aid.(一个这样的例子是隐藏字幕,最初是为了帮助聋人理解电影和电视节目,而不需要听到对话或声音。但很容易想到隐藏字幕的其他应用程序:对于在嘈杂的酒吧或健身房看电视的顾客、既想读书又想听的第二语言学习者,或者将其用作学习辅助工具的学生来说,隐藏字幕很方便。)”可推知,B选项“为盲人设计的阅读设备可以帮助司机绘制数字地图”最能说明“路缘效应”,不仅对弱势群体有帮助,还能有益于其他群体,双赢局面。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly onto a sidewalk — think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but almost all of us.(所以,下次当你过马路的时候,或者在人行横道上滚动你的行李箱的时候,或者在人行道上骑自行车的时候,想想路缘削减了多少,这种设计上的改变打破了一个处于不利地位的群体的排斥之墙,不仅帮助了这个群体,而且帮助了几乎所有人)”结合文章以路缘坡为例,解释是什么是“路缘”效应——当社会创造了一种环境,允许那些被落在后面的人参与并充分贡献时,几乎每个人都是赢家。

56. ninth
57. sitting
58. if ## whether
59. hers 60. asked
61. to stand
62. feet 63. that
64. seriously
65. about
it为形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式,“it is +形容词+ to do sth.”
stand on one's own two feet为固定短语,意为“独立自主”,所以此处用foot的复数形式feet。
talk to sb. about sth.
________________________________________________________________
No matter how hard/difficult it is, he always tries his best to finish the work.
Hearing the news, he leapt/jumped to his feet with joy.
“消息”可表示为news;“高兴地”可表示为with joy;“跳了起来”可表示为leap/jump to one’s feet。 Hearing the news, he leapt/jumped to his feet with joy.
(the +序数词+n.+to do...)(汉译英)
________________________________________________________________
He is the first man/person to reach the moon.
________________________________________________________________
Weather permitting, we will hold this activity.
________________________________________________________________
Nothing is more precious than time.

Dear Smith,
Knowing that you are interested in a traditional Chinese festival, which is called Dragon Boat Festival by Chinese, I am writing to introduce it to you.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month in honor of the great poet, Qu Yuan. As is known to us, in order to warn the king, Qu Yuan sacrificed his life to jump into the Miluo River. People were touched by his behavior and set the day he died as a festival to show honor to him. On that day, we often eat rice-dumplings and drink a special wine. Besides, what should be stressed is the dragon-boat racing, which is very interesting and exciting. People gather on the both sides of the river to watch the participators spare no effort to make for the finishing line.
The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. Would you like to join us to spend it? Looking forward to your coming.
