Yellowstone National Park, USA
Founded in 1872, Yellowstone is widely recognized as the world’s first national park. Located on a vast volcanic system, it boasts (拥有) over 10,000 heat-related landscapes, including Old Faithful, a celebrated geyser, renowned geysers, hot springs and mud pots, with prehistoric deer roaming freely — making it a beloved destination for nature lovers.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is equipped with special wooden boardwalks to allow visitors to get close to the beautiful scenery without damaging it.

James O’Connell is a dedicated doctor who devotes himself to providing medical care to Boston’s homeless population. Unlike most doctors who work in hospitals, he and his colleagues are used to offering treatment in unusual locations, which has become a special part of his work over the years.
As the president of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, O’Connell leads his team to provide health care services at more than 65 sites, including soup kitchens, detoxification (排毒;解毒) units and corrections facilities. He has also recorded his special medical experiences in his new memoir, Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor. Since 1985, he has been caring for Boston’s homeless people, known as “rough sleepers”, with great patience and responsibility.
O’Connell points out that homeless patients suffer from the same chronic and acute illnesses as the general population, but there is one key difference — their health issues have long been neglected due to their poor living conditions and lack of access to regular medical care. This is the core problem facing homeless patients. To address this, O’Connell and his team take the initiative to go to the homeless in their “homes” — under bridges, in alleyways and on park benches — to provide door-to-door medical care, ensuring they can get timely treatment. “What we see frequently are regular issues that have been neglected for years and years,” he says. “So we see the natural history of illness that is usually interrupted by good preventive care.” Over the years, he has witnessed the serious harm caused by untreated frostbite, AIDS and diabetes, as well as the negative effects of profound isolation and extreme loneliness. However, he is deeply moved by the courage and resourcefulness his patients show in the face of adversity.
“These are people who are nameless and faceless when they are sitting out in the street,” O’Connell says. “But when you get to know them, they are stories of great courage, of struggles against unbelievable adversity. I think I probably would have been a broken person had I lived through what they lived through.” For O’Connell, his work is more than just treating illnesses; it is about bringing care and dignity to the most isolated group, highlighting the true value of medical service.
24. What makes O’Connell’s work special?
A. He works in a famous big hospital in Boston.
B. He treats homeless patients in unusual places.
C. He only cares about chronic illnesses of patients.
D. He writes memoirs about his hospital experiences.
25. What is the key difference between homeless patients and the general population?
A. They suffer from more kinds of acute illnesses.
B. They have no access to any medical care.
C. Their common illnesses are long neglected.
D. They are more likely to feel lonely and sad.
26. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Health problems of homeless patients and the solutions.
B. Harm caused by untreated serious diseases.
C. Patients’ courage in face of extreme hardship.
D. Ways to offer preventive care for the homeless.
27. What can we infer about O’Connell from the text?
A. He has worked as a street doctor for nearly 20 years.
B. He sees dignity and care as key parts of his work.
C. He has cured most patients of AIDS and diabetes.
D. He devotes all his time to writing medical memoirs.
C
A long-term analysis indicates that people who regularly drink caffeinated coffee and tea tend to have a lower risk of developing dementia (痴呆症), yet the study fails to figure out the exact reasons behind this connection. Dr. Céline Gounder, a medical contributor to CBS News, warned that people should treat the research results “with a grain of salt”.
The study, published in the famous medical journal JAMA, collected and analyzed data from 131,821 volunteers in two long-term investigations lasting from 1986 to 2023. These participants reported their dietary habits, including their daily consumption of caffeinated coffee, caffeinated tea, and decaffeinated coffee. During the follow-up period, 11,033 participants were diagnosed with dementia. Researchers continuously monitored their cognitive health through regular assessments.
The results showed that those who drank the most caffeinated coffee had an 18% lower risk of dementia when compared to those who reported little or no caffeinated coffee consumption. Besides, they experienced slower cognitive decline over time, the researchers said. The benefits appeared to be most remarkable in people who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day or one to two cups of caffeinated tea daily. In their report, the researchers wrote that higher caffeinated coffee intake was significantly associated with lower risk of dementia, while decaffeinated coffee intake was not significantly associated with dementia risk.
However, Dr. Céline Gounder noted that the risk reduction was small. She added that the data showed an association rather than a cause-effect relationship. In other words, caffeinated drinks might not be the only factor contributing to the lower dementia risk; other lifestyle or genetic factors could also play a role. She emphasized that more further scientific research is needed to confirm these results before any firm conclusions can be drawn.
28. What does the underlined phrases “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. With total trust. B. With great passion.
C. With a cautious attitude. D. With strong interest.
29. According to the study, which group had the most notable benefits in reducing dementia risk?
A. People who drank none of caffeinated coffee a day.
B. People who drank one cup of caffeinated tea per day.
C. People who drank any amount of caffeinated coffee.
D. People who drank two cups of decaffeinated coffee daily.
30. What is Dr. Céline Gounder’s attitude towards the findings ?
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Appreciative. D. Supportive.
31. What is the best title of the passage?
A. How Caffeine lowers Dementia risk? B. What are the benefits of Caffeinated Drinks?
C. Caffeinated Drinks: A New Cure for Dementia? D. Can Caffeinated Drinks lower Dementia risk?
D
On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the snow leopard, a symbol of wildness, once gradually vanished from public attention. According to Li Xiaonan, director of Qinghai’s Forestry and Grassland Bureau, signs of snow leopards in the Sanjiangyuan area had nearly disappeared by 2005. It was not until 2012 that researchers successfully captured clear images of these rare creatures again.
The return of the “king of the snow mountains” reflects a broader ecological recovery across Sanjiangyuan. As the source of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Lancang River, this region is known as China’s “water tower”. It provides plenty of clean water for many areas at home and abroad, playing a critical role in maintaining national ecological balance.
A key step in safeguarding this valuable area, Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve was founded in 2000 and upgraded to a national park in 2021. To restore the fragile ecosystem, the local government have launched numerous conservation projects. Nearly 100,000 local herders (牧民) have been relocated from fragile grasslands, reducing overgrazing and allowing vegetation to recover gradually. “I feel deeply relieved to see the grasslands in my hometown thriving again,” said Gunga Namgyal, a Tibetan elder who helped lead the relocation, in a 2019 interview with China Daily.
These efforts have yielded remarkable results. Wildlife habitats have been significantly expanded, providing 38, 000 square kilometers of suitable living space for snow leopards. Beyond the park, Qinghai has promoted eco-village construction and introduced an ecological compensation (补偿) mechanism for key river basins. Under the program, provincial and local governments have jointly funded 400 million yuan, linking financial rewards and punishments to water quality protection and conservation performance.
As ecosystems recover, wildlife populations are increasing steadily. The frequent appearance of rare meat-eating animals such as snow leopards serve as clear evidence of a healthier ecological system. By July 2025, the number of snow leopards in Sanjiangyuan has reached approximately 1,000.
32. What can we learn about snow leopards from Paragraph 1?
A. They died out completely before 2005. B. They were filmed again in the year of 2012.
C. They mainly fed on river plants in cold areas. D. They enjoyed great popularity among local people.
33. Why is Sanjiangyuan regarded as China’s “water tower”?
A. It offers water resources for many different areas
B. It holds the largest water storage in western China.
C. It keeps plenty of wild animals living in river basins.
D. It builds lots of water-saving projects along main rivers.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the ecological protection in Sanjiangyuan?
A. Doubtful B. Critical C. Positive D. Unconcerned
35. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Eco-villages are built mainly to offer more homes for rare predators.
B. Effective protective measures greatly help restore the local ecosystem.
C. The number of snow leopards will keep growing beyond 1,000 very soon.
D. Governments spend most public money only on water quality management.

Dorien is a Belgian girl who is energetic and always excited about learning new things. At the age of 18, she had mastered Greek and French, but she decided to study a new language.
Deeply fascinated by Chinese culture and curious about this mysterious land, she chose to take on the challenge of learning Chinese. Her decision shocked everyone. “It’s crazy!” her friends shouted. But nothing could stop Dorien from pursuing her dream of learning Chinese. She packed her bags for Chengdu, Sichuan province, and studied at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.
However, reality hit hard. In class, Dorien found learning Chinese more challenging than studying Greek and French. The four tones (四声调) of Chinese made her completely confused. On the street, she struggled to string a sentence to ask for directions. During her first hotpot meal, her Chinese classmates enjoyed the chili (辣椒) happily, but she couldn’t stand the spiciness at all. Her face turned red, and she kept blowing her nose and drinking water.
However, challenges went beyond language and food. In social situations, Dorien often felt awkward. Her classmates often shared their snacks and personal belongings with her, and invited her to join almost every group activity. Although kind, this kind of closeness made her uneasy and even stressed out. She didn’t know how to accept it naturally or how to say no politely without offending anyone.
As days passed, a heavy feeling of self-doubt grew in her heart. One day, her Chinese teacher noticed her problem and encouraged her. “Don’t worry.” the teacher said gently, “Take your time. Try to embrace our culture with an open heart, and you’ll find beauty everywhere.” These simple words lifted her spirits.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. A 31. D

A. It offers water resources for many different areas
B. It holds the largest water storage in western China.

【答案】范文
Gradually, Dorien began to appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture. She started trying spicy food with her classmates and even learned to order hotpot in Chinese. She also joined their study group activities and found it warm to be cared about. Her Chinese improved little by little, and she even began to tell jokes in class. When she shared her favorite snacks with others, she realized the closeness she once feared was just a way of showing kindness. She felt her heart filled with joy and confidence.
A year later, standing in front of her Belgian classmates, she began her speech in fluent Chinese. She talked about her life in Chengdu, the warm friends she made, and the delicious food she learned to love. She told them how the teacher’s words had changed her, and how she finally understood the beauty of being open to new cultures. When she finished, the room erupted in applause. Dorien smiled, knowing that this journey had not only taught her a new language, but also helped her grow into a more confident and open-minded person.
