Take a Salvador Dalí-Inspired Road Trip Through Spain
Barcelona is home to many world-famous artists, like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces, such as Batlló and La Sagrada Familia, are eye-catching landmarks of the city. La Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction (建设) for 144 years, is expected to be completed in 2026.
Another famous artist, Salvador Dalí, was closely connected to Barcelona, though he spent much of his time in other places, especially in his hometown, Figueres, and at his coastal house in Cadaqués, a two-hour drive from Barcelona.
“Dalí really saw himself as being local,” says Dr. Elliott King, an expert in art history. “That’s why when you’re studying him, you have to go to those places that he talked about to realize that those rocks in his paintings are the ones right there in real places travelers can visit. Even some of the figures in his paintings were people he knew in Cadaqués.”
Although you can visit the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, to see many of his works, a trip to Spain offers a deeper understanding of the artist’s life and inspirations. Art lovers should hit the road and leave Barcelona to visit three must-see museums in the Costa Brava region of Catalonia: the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Gala Dalí Castle Museum in Púbol, and the Salvador Dalí House Museum in Port Lligat.
1. Who is the designer of La Sagrada Familia?
A. Joan Miró. B. Antoni Gaudí. C. Pablo Picasso. D. Salvador Dalí.
2. What is special about Dalí’s works?
A. They focus on historical figures. B. They never reflect the natural world.
C. They are inspired by real places. D. They are based on classical paintings.
3. What should art lovers do to better understand Salvador Dalí?
A. Take a trip to Spain. B. Visit a museum in Barcelona.
C. Tour Paris in spring. D. Read a guidebook to Florida.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A

Emile and the Field is the story of a little boy who spends every season playing in a field by his house, whispering to the trees and collecting leaves. Usually it’s just Emile and his little black dog, and that’s the way he likes it. In winter, though, Emile has to share his field when other kids come sledding (坐雪橇), and it annoys him. But then his dad helps him understand that nature is for sharing. “If we share, Emile’s father said, who usually had an answer, and learn to take care, it means the field will be here forever,” wrote Young.
Young originally wrote Emile and the Field years ago as a bedtime poem for his son, but this poem about Emile lives on, now as a children’s book illustrated (插图) by Chioma Ebinama.
“I make sure that all of the images are vibrant,” Ebinama said. To reflect Emile’s love of nature, she used bright colors like pinks, blues, and sunny yellows to create warm and beautiful pictures. She wanted each page to feel like a piece of fine art, so she hand-painted the illustrations in watercolor.
Ebinama even drew her dog, Luna, into the story as the scruffy (邋遢的) little dog that follows Emile around. She got Luna as a gift right when she was starting to illustrate this book. Even though there was no dog in Young’s original poem, Luna came in very handy. “If we include this dog, then you know that the character on the page is Emile right away,” Ebinama explained.
“Obviously there is a kind of family quality to the book for me,” said Young. He named the main character of his poem after his great-grandfather, Emile, a farmer who lived to be 103 years old. The story also drew inspiration from Young, who ran around his family’s fields as a kid in Louisiana.
4. What is the main focus of the story Emile and the Field?
A. A boy’s adventure in the city. B. A boy’s connection with nature.
C. A boy’s trip in the cold winter. D. A boy’s relationship with his dog.

A. Lively. B. Limited. C. Peaceful. D. Optional.
6. Why did Ebinama include the dog in the illustrations?
A. To represent her love for cute animals. B. To make the illustrations more colorful.
C. To ensure Emile is easily recognizable. D. To give an invaluable lesson to readers.
7. What can be learned about the story from the last paragraph?
A. It reflects Young’s childhood memories.
B. It shows how to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
C. It describes the difficulties of family life.
D. It is created by Young’s great-grandfather.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. A

Saltwater is typically harmful to most plants. As sea levels rise, crops in coastal regions are at great risk, so scientists are racing to find solutions to this problem.
One strategy is to look for ways to engineer plants to tolerate (忍受) saltwater. To this end, Adam Roddy, a plant biologist at New York University, seeks to better understand what enables mangroves — among the few plants that can live in saltwater—to grow so well in that environment.
Researchers usually group mangroves based on their physiological qualities rather than genetic ties—there are about 80 species of mangroves covering nearly 20 plant families, and many mangroves have developed special abilities to block or pump salt out of their systems. However, Roddy and his team wondered if other qualities, such as the size and shape of cells (细胞) that make up the leaves’ outer layer, called the epidermal pavement cells, might contribute to mangroves’ ability to tolerate salty waters as well.
To test this hypothesis (假设), the researchers observed the leaves of 34 mangrove species and 33 of their inland relatives under the microscope. They measured cell size, cell wall thickness, and other features. Then, they analyzed whether any of these characteristics were different between mangroves and their relatives that live farther from the coast.
The team discovered that compared with the cells of their inland relatives, mangroves’ epidermal pavement cells were significantly smaller and had thicker cell walls, supporting the researchers’ hypothesis. However, there was no difference in the size of the stomata (small openings in leaves), meaning mangroves rely more on their cells’ strength than on gas exchange to survive.
Roddy said, “Our study shows that only a few simple cell features are key to surviving extreme conditions. These results point to a promising strategy for engineering other salt-tolerant plants in the face of rising sea levels: by changing the size of cells and the structure of their walls.”
8. What does Roddy’s research want to explore?
A. The effects of saltwater on plant cells. B. Why mangroves can survive in saltwater.
C. The deadly results of rising sea levels. D. How salty water affects trees on the coast.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The value of the study. B. Notable qualities of mangroves.
C. The process of the study. D. Newfound species of mangroves.
10. How do mangroves’ epidermal pavement cells differ from those of their inland relatives?
A. They are less dependent on cells’ strength.
B. They tend to grow better in hot conditions.
C. They are smaller and have thicker cell walls.
D. They are weaker than those of inland plants.
11. What can we infer from Roddy’s words?
A. These results are far from satisfactory. B. The study provides a complex method.
C. Engineering salt-tolerant plants is risky. D. The finding suggests a practical approach.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D

The semantic Web does not sound fun and easy to use, but it could make surfing Web 3.0 a more rewarding and interactive experience. Some believe it could even lead to a new form of artificial intelligence (AI).
In simple terms, the semantic Web is that things on the Internet will be described with descriptor languages so that computers can “understand” what they are. For example, a car part or a person could be marked with a special label. If everything on the Web was marked like this, computers could create a huge network of connected data. With their high-speed processing power, computers could suggest unexpected and useful connections that the human mind could never come up with, making this a step toward AI.
A group of German researchers has created an experimental kiosk (终端机) that lets you experience the semantic Web—even if you have no idea how it works. All you need is a phone and a finger to touch the screen.
This kiosk uses music files as an example of how the semantic Web works. Music files have ID3 tags that provide information about the song, like the artist. When you place your phone on the kiosk, it recognizes the music file and shows you a list of songs by artist or title. You can also use “spotlets”, which can perform actions with these objects. For example, you can drag a music file to a spotlet to play it.
These are just simple examples. Much more can be done with the system. The German team will soon set up a website version (版本), where you can interact with the system using voice commands. They believe this system could be used in busy places like airports or train stations, making it easier to interact with content.
The semantic Web isn’t meant to replace the current Web, but to enhance (增强) it. When fully developed, it could make using the Internet more enjoyable and interactive.
12. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A. Explain an idea. B. Support an opinion.
C. Make a suggestion. D. Draw a comparison.
13. What will the German team do about the system according to the text?
A. Create a mobile app version. B. Develop it for online shopping.
C. Replace other search engines. D. Search for its new possibilities.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the semantic Web?
A. Tolerant. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Understanding the Semantic Web. B. A First Step Towards the Age of AI.
C. Discovering an Applicable Web 3.0. D. The Highs and Lows of the Internet.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A

Jane was a 10-year-old girl with messy brown hair. She lived with her hardworking mom, a nurse who often came home late. Jane tried to do everything by herself but always seemed to forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again, Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework? Still unfinished?”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I really need to do well on this homework. Mr. Jeff has been so strict, and I don’t want to disappoint (使失望) him again.” Her mom nodded, understanding the importance of Jane’s efforts. Finally, everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat breakfast, brush her teeth, and find her shoes, Jane completely forgot her schoolbag by the door.
When she reached the school gate, Jane suddenly stopped. Her hands were empty. “Oh no! My schoolbag!” she cried. She could already imagine Mr. Jeff’s angry face.

【答案】 Just then, Jane saw her mom running towards her with her schoolbag. Her mom held Jane’s schoolbag tightly. “I am just about to leave for work when I notice your schoolbag by the door,” her mom said, handing over the bag. “I know how important it is for you today.” Jane wiped her tears and hugged her mom tightly. “Thank you, Mom!” she said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. With her schoolbag safely in hand, Jane hurried into the school building. She took a deep breath before entering Mr. Jeff’s classroom.
As Jane walked in, Mr. Jeff looked up and said, “Late and no homework again, Jane?” “Sorry I’m late, Mr. Jeff. I had some trouble with my alarms this morning,” she said, placing her homework on his desk. “My report is here.” Mr, Jeff checked Jane’s homework carefully, and then said, “This is... very complete.” For the first time, his serious face softened. “Good job, Jane.” Jane’s face lit up with joy. She felt a sense of accomplishment she hadn’t felt before. “Thank you, Mr, Jeff,” she said, her confidence growing. From that day on, Jane was more careful and organized, knowing that with effort and support, she could overcome her challenges.

B
5. What does the underlined word “vibrant” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Lively. B. Limited. C. Peaceful. D. Optional.
C

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
