Indeed, although Panek had been crazy about running since high school, the idea of running blind seemed altogether too challenging. But he did manage to keep his dream alive—with help from human guides who assisted him on each run. Even so, the real joy of the run—the thrill of independence that comes from conquering a course on your own terms—eluded (躲避) him. “When you’re tied to another person, it’s no longer your own race,” the 48-year-old said. “The independence isn't quite there.” Then Panek found a friend—indeed, man’s best friend—who would help him achieve that sense of purpose. He started running with a guide dog named Gus. Not only did Panek rediscover his love for running, but, along the way, he founded Guiding Eyes for the Blind, an organization dedicated to providing service dogs for the visually disabled. On March 16, Gus glided across the finish line with his human at the New York City Half Marathon. At that moment, they both breezed into the history books. Panek, who finished the course in a little more than two hours and 20 minutes, became the first blind runner to complete the race led by dogs. Brandishing their respective medals, Panek and Gus—who would retire after the race—shared a breathless embrace. “It’s a little emotional for me because he’s been there with me the whole time,” Panek said. But Panek was quick to point out that it wasn’t just Gus who provided the wind beneath his running shoes. In all, three guide dogs helped him see his way to the finish line. Siblings Westley and Waffle picked up the early legs of the course, each running between five and eight kilometers of the 21-kilometer race. With retirement looming, it would be the faithful yellow lab's last race. But for Panek, the road ahead remains long and bright—not only for him, but for anyone with a disability who still hopes to run down a dream. 31. When did Thomas become blind? A. When he was about 23. B. When he was 25 years old. C. When he was in high school. D. When he was 48 years old. 32. Why did Panek get himself the guide dog Gus? A. Because he didn’t want to have another person with him. B. Because he wanted to found Guiding Eyes for the Blind. C. Because he wanted to help those with visual disability. D. Because he wanted to enjoy the delight of running independently. 33. What do we learn about the dog Gus from the passage? A. It was the first dog to lead a blind runner at the Half Marathon. B. It ran the whole course of the New York City Half Marathon. C. It ran about eight kilometers with Thomas Panek at the race. D. It wouldn’t be working as a guide dog to Thomas Panek any more. 34. Which of the following best shows Thomas’s qualities as a runner? ①caring . ②emotional. ③independent. ④kind. ⑤warm. ⑥persistent. A. ①② B. ③④ C. ⑤⑥ D. ③⑥ 35. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Running with a dog helper. B. The best friend of humans. C. The road ahead remains long and bright. D. The hoping of running down a dream. What drives our behavior (行为)? Psychologists have suggested different ways of thinking about motivation (动机), including looking at whether motivation comes from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) a person. Extrinsic motivation is when you are motivated to perform a behavior or take part in an activity because you want to get a reward (奖赏) or avoid punishment. You will take action because you expect to get something in return or avoid something unpleasant. Intrinsic motivation is when you decide to do something because you find it satisfying. You are performing an activity for what it is not because you are after some external (外部的) reward. The behavior itself is its own reward. Studies have shown that offering too many external rewards for an already internally (在内部) rewarding behavior can reduce intrinsic motivation——which is known as the over justification (奖励过当) effect. For example, in a 2008 study, children who were rewarded for playing with a toy they had already expressed interest in playing with became less interested in the toy after being externally rewarded. This is not to suggest that extrinsic motivation is a bad thing—it can be beneficial (有益的) in some situations. For example, extrinsic motivation can be especially helpful when a person needs to complete a task that they find unpleasant. Most people would accept that intrinsic motivation is best, but it is not always possible in every situation. Both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation play a key role in learning. Experts have argued that education’s traditional stress on external rewards (such as grades, report cards, and gold stars) undermines any intrinsic motivation that students might already have. However, others have suggested hat extrinsic motivators can help students feel more knowledgeable in the classroom, which in turn builds up their intrinsic motivation. As professor David Myers put it, a person’s interest often remains when a reward is used neither to bribe (贿赂) nor to control but to show a job well done, as in a “most improved player” award. Put simply, rewards, rightly given, can increase enjoyment and motivate high performance. Understanding how each type of motivation works and when it is likely to be useful can help people perform tasks and improve their learning. 36. In what way does the writer start the topic (话题) about motivation in paragraph 1? A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples. C. By listing numbers. D. By asking questions. 37. Which of the following is intrinsic motivation? A. You do schoolwork to get a good grade. B. You practice chess to get the first prize. C. You study math hard because it’s interesting. D. You clean your room to avoid punishment from your parents. 38. Why does the writer mention the 2008 study in paragraph 3? A. To explain the benefits of offering toys as rewards. B. To prove (证明) external rewards can influence one’s interest. C. To introduce how intrinsic motivation works in children. D. To stress the importance of understanding intrinsic motivation. 39. What does the underlined word “undermines” in paragraph 6 probably mean? A. Reduces. B. Argues. C. Encourages. D. Suggests. 40. Which of the following may the writer agree? A. Extrinsic motivation is key to one’s achievement. B. Intrinsic motivation has little to do with enjoying a task. C. Offering rewards of any kind takes the fun out of an activity. D. Properly-given rewards can encourage further improvement. D 37. C 38. B 39. A 40. 根据“Why do we do the things we do? What drives our behavior (行为)?” 根据“Intrinsic motivation is when you decide to do something because you find it satisfying.” 根据“Studies have shown that offering too many external rewards for an already internally (在内部) rewarding behavior can reduce intrinsic motivation——which is known as the over justification (奖励过当) effect.” 根据“However, others have suggested hat extrinsic motivators can help students feel more knowledgeable in the classroom, which in turn builds up their intrinsic motivation.” 故选A。 通读倒数第二段尤其是最后一句“Put simply, rewards, rightly given, can increase enjoyment and motivate high performance.” D。 D ①Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to their young trees? ②Professor Simard, forest ecologist (森林生态学家) from the University of British Columbia, explains how trees are much more complex (复杂的) than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin (达尔文) thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard and her team have made a new discovery and showed just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their group work and support, passing around necessary nutrition (营养) like Nitrogen (氮) and carbon “depending on who needs it”. ③Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks. This makes sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive nutrition to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is cut down, it influences all. ④Simard talks about “mother trees”. These are usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. These “Mother Trees” are connected to all the other trees in the forest by this network of fungi, and may manage the resources of the whole trees and plants in the forest. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the young trees, transporting important nutrition to them so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “Mother Trees” without paying attention to these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances to save the whole forest. ⑤“We didn’t take any notice of it” Simard says sadly. “Mother trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chances.” If we could explain the message clearly to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future. 41. The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph ② probably means that trees ________. A. compete for survival B. protect their own wealth C. depend on each other D. provide support for dying trees 42. “Mother trees” are very important because ________. A. they look the largest in size in the forest B. all the other trees depend on them C. they pass on nutrition to dying trees D. they transport important nutrition to young trees after dying 43. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to (指的是)? A. how “tree societies” work B. how trees grow old C. how forestry industry develops D. how young trees survive 44. What’s the proper structure (结构) for the passage? A. B. C. D. 45. What can we can learn from the passage? A. Charles Darwin had the same opinion as Simard. B. trees communicate with each other less deeply than we think. C. if “Mother Trees” are cut down, they make no difference to the forest. D. nitrogen and carbon play an important role in the forest ecological system. 41. C 42. B 43. A 44. A 45. 根据“Although Charles Darwin (达尔文) thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard and her team have made a new discovery and showed just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true”可知,达尔文认为树木是适者生存的竞争关系,但经过研究发现,事实是相反的,说明树与树是相互依赖的。故选C。 【42题详解】 细节理解题。根据“These ‘Mother Trees’ are connected to all the other trees in the forest by this network of fungi, and may manage the resources of the whole trees and plants in the forest.” 根据“When humans cut down ‘Mother Trees’ without paying attention to these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances to save the whole forest.” 故选A。 根据“Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks. This makes sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive nutrition to keep them all healthy.” What’s social phobia (恐惧症)? It’s a strong fear being talked about by others. ____46____ They prefer not to go out much, and it’s hard for them to make new friends or socialize. But is this a “real” disease? In fact, this is just a reaction (反应) to certain social situations. US researcher Ty Tashiro wrote a book that explains that some people don’t “read” social situations correctly and so they end up feeling uncomfortable. ____47____ As a result, they start to act embarrassingly because they don’t want this to happen. This might make them refuse to socialize or find it hard to do so. They gradually prefer to stay in instead of going out to meet new people. ____48____ “Real” social phobia can be described as social anxiety (焦虑) and it’s much more serious. People with social anxiety want to go out and communicate with people, but they’re so afraid of doing it that they cannot leave their homes. ____49____ People with social phobia disease may experience panic attacks (惊慌失措) and other moments. Luckily, social anxiety can be treated. ____50____ Those who have more serious cases of social anxiety can take medicine to treat their disease. A. Some people simply use self-help books to help them control over their minds. B. But this doesn’t mean they have social phobia. C. Some young people describe themselves as having “social phobia”. D. For example, they might be afraid of breaking some kind of unspoken rule. E. Their brains simply won’t allow them to communicate with others in a normal way. F. Have you ever heard of social phobia? C 47. D 48. B 49. E 50. 【46题详解】 根据下文“They prefer not to go out much, and it’s hard for them to make new friends or socialize.” 【47题详解】 根据上文“US researcher Ty Tashiro wrote a book that explains that some people don’t ‘read’ social situations correctly and so they end up feeling uncomfortable.” 【48题详解】 根据上文“This might make them refuse to socialize or find it hard to do so. They gradually prefer to stay in instead of going out to meet new people.” 【49题详解】 根据上文“ People with social anxiety want to go out and communicate with people, but they’re so afraid of doing it that they cannot leave their homes.” 【50题详解】 根据上文“ Luckily, social anxiety can be treated.” 故选A。 51. B: ________________________. I visited the Great Wall. Great/Wonderful/It was great/It was wonderful 【解析】 【详解】根据“How was your trip to Beijing?”可知,此处描述自己的北京之旅怎么样,结合“I visited the Great Wall.” Great/Wonderful/It was great/It was wonderful。 53. A: ________________________? B: She has long hair with big eyes. What does she look like 【解析】 【详解】根据答句“She has long hair with big eyes.”可知,此处是询问她的外貌,应用句式“What does she look like”。故填What does she look like。 54. A: I wish I could go into space some day. B: I hope ________________________________________. 【答案】your dream can come true 【解析】 【详解】根据“I wish I could go into space some day.” I hope your dream can come true。故填your dream can come true。 55. A: Excuse me, could you please ________________________ to the airport? B: Sure. We’re going to the same place. Get on, please. 故填give me a ride。 VI.看图写话(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 56. invent, 1879 ________________________ 57. use, take ________________________ 58. make, wood ________________________ 59. next week ________________________ 60. now ________________________ 【答案】56. The light bulb was invented in 1879. 57. A digital camera is used to take photos. 58. Paper is made from wood. 59. They will fly to Beijing next week. 60. The boys are playing chess now. The light bulb was invented in 1879. 主语A digital camera(数码相机)是 “被用来做某事”,所以用被动语态be used。be used to do sth.是固定搭配,表示 “被用来做某事”,这里是is used to take photos(被用来拍照)。结构:主语+is/are used to+动词原形。故填A digital camera is used to take photos. be made from 表示 “由……制成(成品看不出原材料)”,纸看不出木头的样子,所以用from。结构:主语+is made from+原材料。故填Paper is made from wood. They will fly to Beijing next week. 主语The boys是复数,be动词用are,动词play变成playing。结构:主语+is/are+动词-ing+其他。故填The boys are playing chess now. B When Thomas Panek lost his eyesight more than 25 years ago, the avid runner doubted he would ever pursue his lifelong passion again. A. C Why do we do the things we do? D ①Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to their young trees? What’s social phobia (恐惧症)?
