Jian Chuntian runs a coffee shop in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. The shop is helping him realize his dream of helping poor children. His method is a little different — he gives free ice creams to those who donate (捐赠) things such as clothes and toys, which he sends to children in poor areas.
Jian started his shop in 2016. On the day it opened, he made a rule to encourage people to help those in need. The toy donation project is environmentally friendly and can bring happiness to poor children. Also, the children who donate toys can find it interesting because they get their favorite ice creams as rewards (奖励). In four years, the 36-year-old has received more than 15,000 toys. “When I was a volunteer teacher in a poor village, I found that many children there didn’t need desks, chairs, or pens. They needed something to play with,” he said.
Since Jian’s shop is close to two primary schools, students often visit it after school. Sometimes, they want to eat ice cream but have no money or toys to exchange. So Jian came up with another idea — offering ice creams in exchange for cigarette butts (烟头). Children can pick up twenty cigarette butts for one ice cream. They have picked up about 50,000 butts in the past three years.
“I hope that one day, when they grow up, they can still remember that they buy themselves ice creams in these ways, so I think the project is very meaningful,” he said.
24. What is Jian’s dream?
A. Being a famous person. B. Making the best coffee. C. Helping poor children.
25. What can the children get if they donate toys according to Paragraph 2?
A. Desks. B. Ice creams. C. Pens.
26. What does Jian think of the toy donation project?
A. Unnecessary. B. Meaningful. C. Interesting.
27. What can we learn about Jian from the passage?

①It’s often said, “You can’t live only on air.” But now the Chinese scientists can tell you: Maybe you can.
②Recently, some Chinese scientists have made a big breakthrough (突破). They turned CO2 into starch (淀粉).
③Starch is the main part of rice and corn that we eat every day. Usually it’s created by plants with CO2, water and sunlight. According to the team’s director Ma Yanhe, it usually takes the plants nearly sixty steps to produce starch. But now, the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only eleven steps.
④“Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a laboratory, and this technology may be helpful in many areas,” said Ma.
⑤This method makes it possible to produce food in factories instead of traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land. It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate change, according to China Daily.
⑥The study can be helpful in space, too. Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!
28. What important breakthrough have the scientists made recently?
A. They made a kind of plant.
B. They turned CO2 into starch.
C. They found a new way to grow corn faster.

Heze, a city in Shandong Province, is famous as the “Capital of Peonies (牡丹) in China”. It has a history of growing peonies for over 1,500 years. In old times, Heze was called Caozhou. People often say, “Caozhou peonies are the best under heaven.” Many poets and writers wrote beautiful words to praise the flowers.
Liu Yuxi, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty (唐朝), once wrote, “Only the peony is the true national beauty; when it blooms (盛开), the whole city is full of joy.” Another poet also said, “Peony is the King of Flowers with the nicest smell in the world.” These lines show how much people love peonies in Chinese culture.
Every April, the Heze Peony Festival is held. Peonies bloom in bright colors: red, pink, white and purple. They look beautiful and smell sweet. Thousands of visitors from home and abroad come to enjoy the flowers and take photos. The festival lasts about a month with many interesting cultural activities.
Now Heze has the largest peony planting area in the world. Local farmers grow hundreds of kinds of peonies and sell them to other places. Peonies help develop local tourism and bring chances to people.
In Chinese culture, peonies stand for wealth, beauty and good luck. They are not only lovely flowers but also a symbol of Heze’s culture, showing the charm of traditional China to the world.
