Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. As a firefighter, you’re constantly thinking of other people and trying to help children. It’s the mindset, that is the most difficult part in this job!
One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) place. I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the burrito joint to order. When he followed me in, the people behind the count er refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to encourage him to order whatever and however much he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at least 3 times over!
For someone who has been on the edges of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behavior. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. I know we see these people every day asking for money but you had to be there to see the look in his face. To me it reminded me when I was young and my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I think he felt special, like he was getting attention. Again something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.
24. What’s the hardest part of being a firefighter according to the author?
A. Learning to be a good firefighter.
B. Deciding what to do in the future.
C. Dealing with the brother’s relationship.
D. Developing the mindset of helping others.
25. What do we know about the homeless man?
A. He was grateful for the author’s kindness.
B. He ordered whatever he wanted the moment he was in.
C. He asked the author to buy a burrito to fill his stomach.
D. He was not welcomed by those running the burrito joint at first.
26. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the birthday cake?
A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.
B. To explain the reason for the values he holds onto.
C. To show the similar experience of the homeless man.
D. To tell the difference between him and the homeless man.
27. Which of the following words can best describe the writer?
A. Caring and humorous.
B. Selfless and determined.
C. Kind-hearted and thoughtful.
D. Considerate and Hard-working.

When you’re sitting in class or behind your desk waiting for the clock to strike a time when you can go home, it is natural that your mind should wander (走神) a bit. It is common for your mind to wander to a vacation and even travel around the world. What if there is a way that you can travel around the world without having to pay any money?
A person that managed to make it around the world without spending much was Shantanu Starick. How did he trade off his service? Starick realized that as a photographer he had a service that people would usually be willing to pay money for, but he would instead offer his photography service to anyone who could provide him with food, shelter (住处) and transportation. Starick has been traveling for a surprising 30 months and has visited countries ranging from the United States to Ecuador.
In English-speaking countries, trading off services and communicating aren’t difficult for Starick. However, in farther areas where there isn’t an English- speaking person in sight it can be quite difficult. More than anything, the locals appreciate (欣赏) the effort behind trying to speak their language, even if you don’t exactly sound like a native speaker.
You can do it too!
Honestly, with a bit of confidence, drive and a skill you can trade, you’ll be able to do exactly the same as Starick.
Start thinking about what you can do to get around the world without paying money. With our social networks and the connectivity our world has, you can easily connect with and market yourself to people across the world without any effort.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To describe students in class.
C. To give an example for the text.
D. To show people’s state of mind.
29. What does the underlined phrase “trade off” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Join. B. Exchange.
C. Stop. D. Improve.
30. In the locals’ opinion, what is the key to travelers in non-English-speaking countries?
A. The skills.
B. The confidence to succeed.
C. The bravery to travel.
D. The effort to speak the local language.
31. What do we know about Shantanu Starick?
A. His job is only traveling around the world.
B. He is too poor to afford the travels.
C. He has a skill to travel without paying much money.
D. He doesn’t hear of other languages except English.
D
Global warming is greatly affecting sea turtle babies — 99% of them are being born female. Sea turtle populations have been facing an obvious population drop, which are further worsened by climate change.
Floridian sea turtles for the past four years have been facing the hottest summers in Florida state history. Bette Zirkelback, a manager of the Turtle Hospital within the Florida Keys, noted that, “Scientists, who are studying sea turtle hatching (孵化), have found no male sea turtles and only female sea turtles for the past four years.”
This surprising trend shows how climate change is affecting the species and how animals struggle to adapt to these unnatural changes. Commonly, sex is determined before birth, but in sea turtles, something unique happens. When female sea turtles bury their eggs in the sand, the sex is decided by the temperature of the sand on the beaches. These turtle eggs will hatch for around two months, and their sex is decided by a temperature difference of around 4 degrees. Sea turtles that hatch below 27.7℃ will be born male. If sea turtles hatch above 31℃, they will be born female.
Melissa Rosales Rodriguez, a sea turtle keeper at the Miami Zoo Turtle Hospital, expressed her concerns saying, “In the years to come, we’re going to see an obvious drop in their population because we just don’t have the genetic diversity (基因多样性). We don’t have the male-to-female rate needed in order to be able to have enough sea turtle babies.”
Therefore, in sea turtle hatching grounds around the world, there is a huge need for sea turtle protection centers to ensure the future of sea turtles.
32. What is the major threat to sea turtles?
A. Habitat loss. B. Human activities.
C. Climate change. D. Water pollution.
33. What can be inferred about sea turtles from Paragraph 3?
A. They have a fixed male-to-female rate.
B. They require high temperatures to hatch.
C. Their eggs are laid on the beach surface.
D. Their sex is affected by sand temperature.
34. What does the author suggest for sea turtles?
A. Establishing preservation sites globally.
B. Improving the success rate of hatching.
C. Fixing the sand temperature to a fit level.
D. Protecting the eggs from their enemies.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ways to Ensure the Future of Sea Turtles
B. The Drop of Female Sea Turtle Populations
C. Why 99% of Sea Turtles Are Born Female?
D. How Climate Change Is Killing Sea Turtles?

Rita, a young girl from a poor background, walked along the road with a frown ruining her usually cheerful face. Tomorrow was her best friend Kathryn’s birthday, and Rita had no suitable dress for the celebration. Her family had fallen on hard times since the closure of her father’s company, leaving them unable to afford new clothes.
Deciding not to let this dampen her spirits, Rita chose an old dress that once held a special place in her heart. As it was now too short, she hoped to have it altered (修改). With determination, she carried the dress to a local tailor, only to be met with disappointment as the tailor explained that he could not take on any more alteration work due to an increasing number of orders.
Holding the paper bag with her old dress inside, Rita felt a wave of uncertainty. “What am I to do?” she wondered. Just then, her attention was drawn to a lady exiting a car and heading toward the bank. As the lady hurriedly searched for some papers in her purse, her wallet slipped out unnoticed. Without hesitation, Rita rushed to pick up the wallet and waited patiently on the steps outside the bank, despite the crowd and the time passing.
Finally, the lady emerged from the bank. When Rita returned the wallet, the lady was overwhelmed with gratitude. The lady checked the contents and found everything was placed as they had been. She noticed the girl’s face was covered with sadness. “What’s wrong with you, honey?” the lady asked.
Rita told the lady that she was invited to her friend’s birthday party but she had no suitable dress and the local tailor refused to alter her old dress for the party.

26. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the birthday cake?
A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.
B. To explain the reason for the values he holds onto.

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. C

【35题详解】

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
The lady happened to be the owner of a clothing store that sewed clothes. Touched by Rita’s honesty and kindness she immediately offered to help. She led Rita into her clothing store, where the air was filled with the scent of fresh fabric and creativity. The lady called in her most skilled tailor and, on Rita’s advice, worked out a plan to transform the old dress. They added delicate lace to the hems, extended the skirts to the right length, and sewed on sparkling diamonds that shone in the light.
When Rita saw the altered dress, her eyes flew wide open. This once too short dress was transformed into an elegant outfit complete with delicate lace and vibrant colors. She could hardly believe it was the same one she had almost given up on. The lady smiled at her, handing the dress over. “It’s a gift,” she said softly. “A little kindness goes a long way.” Rita could only nod, her heart swelling with gratitude. Next day, Rita went to Kathryn’s birthday party with her head held high, and the story of the magical dress inspired her with the power of kindness.
