Cai Xitao (蔡希陶), a young Chinese botanist
In the 1930s
Xishuangbanna, Yunnan (known as the "Kingdom of Plants")
He planned to explore the tropical rainforest and find suitable areas to grow rubber trees for China.
He met extreme heat, malaria (疟疾), and dangerous wild animals. He also fell seriously ill.
He introduced rubber trees and built China’s first rubber‑planting base.
He is a national hero. He turned his love of nature into a lifelong mission and contributed greatly to the country.
Step 2:Write the story with the help of the table.
Cai Xitao: The Guardian of the Rainforest
In the 1930s, China had no rubber resources. To change this, a young botanist named Cai Xitao decided to explore Xishuangbanna, the remote rainforest in Yunnan. His goal was to find suitable places to grow rubber trees and study how to plant them in China.
The journey was full of dangers. The weather was extremely hot, and the forest was full of mosquitoes and wild animals. Sadly, Cai Xitao fell seriously ill with malaria during his field work. He was so weak that he could hardly stand. However, just like Professor Wang, he never stopped his work.
With great persistence, Cai Xitao proved that Xishuangbanna was suitable for growing rubber trees. He carried on with his research day and night. Eventually, he helped China build its first rubber‑planting base.
Cai Xitao is a true explorer. His lifelong exploration of nature not only showed his deep love for plants but also helped his country. His spirit of devotion will always inspire us.
